Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 44)
Electrical System →5 issues
Your 2024 ID.4 is one of 311 vehicles with a manufacturing defect in the high-voltage battery where internal electrodes are misaligned and cathodes have shifted, creating a fire risk through thermal runaway. Volkswagen's current plan is to replace only the flagged battery modules, but you're concerned that other modules in your pack may have the same hidden manufacturing defects from faulty assembly equipment. You're requesting a complete battery pack replacement to ensure safety and avoid future problems with module imbalance, reduced range, and repeated service visits.

Your infotainment system locked up and rebooted several times while you were driving, and eventually your entire car rebooted while in motion. During this time, you lost visibility of your speedometer and heads-up display for 1-2 minutes. Your service center has collected diagnostic logs to send to Volkswagen for investigation.

Your 2024 ID.4 produced a high-pitched alarm and displayed an error message while plugged into a Level 2 home charger in cold weather (below freezing), even though it wasn't actively charging. You had to call the fire department and manually disconnect the high-voltage battery before a tow truck could move the vehicle to the dealer. This same issue occurred with at least two other ID.4s at your dealer over the same weekend.

Your infotainment display and instrument cluster randomly reset, freeze, or go blank while driving, sometimes causing you to lose access to the backup camera, speedometer, and warning alerts. You're also seeing a "12V battery limited" warning, which suggests the vehicle's low-voltage electrical system may not be supplying enough power to these critical systems. These intermittent failures started right after you purchased the car and create a safety concern because you temporarily lose important driving information. The issue likely involves the 12-volt battery, its charging circuit, or the wiring connections that power the display systems.

Your car's displays, including the backup camera and speedometer, failed to turn on when you started the vehicle. While the car could move and accelerate, you couldn't see your speed on the dashboard, which felt unsafe to drive. After leaving the car off for about 10 hours, the displays worked again when you returned. The issue likely involves the instrument cluster or display system needing a reset or software update.

While you were parked with your foot on the brake, your vehicle suddenly accelerated at full speed and crashed into a building in front of you. The vehicle wouldn't turn off even after you exited it. This has happened before—the previous time you only hit a curb. This is a serious safety concern that needs immediate investigation of your vehicle's data recorder.

Your ID.4's navigation system has multiple issues: it's showing incorrect speed limits and GPS locations that are significantly off from where you actually are, causing wrong directions to charging stations and other destinations. These problems have also disabled the SOS emergency feature since the car can't determine its location, and Android Auto isn't working either. Your dealer has attempted repairs multiple times over three months without success. Fixing this will likely require a navigation module software update, GPS antenna inspection, or potentially a full module replacement.

Forward Collision Avoidance →2 issues
Your ID.4 displayed an error message saying the front parking sensors need cleaning and that emergency braking is unavailable. After cleaning didn't resolve the issue, the dealership found a small rock had damaged the sensors, requiring a $1,700 replacement on your one-year-old vehicle. You're concerned that Volkswagen's sensors are prone to failure, which could mean your emergency braking feature won't work when needed. The fix involves replacing the damaged front parking sensors.

Your car's GPS navigation system is having trouble determining its location, which is causing the forward collision avoidance and adaptive cruise control features to malfunction. The car may automatically brake unexpectedly on highways when the navigation system incorrectly thinks you've entered a lower speed zone far away from your actual location. The automatic distance-keeping feature that maintains spacing from the car ahead may also randomly turn on and off. Volkswagen has acknowledged this issue but currently has no known fix available.

Electrical System,exterior Lighting,structure →1 issue
Your ID.4's door locks keep malfunctioning — they unlock and immediately re-lock, making it hard to enter the vehicle. Even though all four door handles were replaced under a safety recall in February 2025, the problem came back. When you brought it in for recall service in January 2026, the dealer said the software update couldn't be completed because your headlamp modules weren't compatible, so they want to replace both headlamp assemblies at your cost (about $3,888) to finish the recall. Your car has been stuck at the dealer for over a month and won't run, creating a safety concern since you can't properly enter or exit the vehicle or complete essential recall work. Fixing this will likely require replacing the headlamp assemblies and completing the door lock software reprogramming that was interrupted.

Unknown Or Other, service Brakes →1 issue
Your vehicle's emergency SOS button and CarNet connectivity system have stopped working, which means you can't contact emergency services if needed. The dealer replaced a communication module but didn't fix the problem, and the vehicle has been in the shop for over 2 weeks without resolution. Additionally, your brake pedal is making noise that the dealer hasn't properly diagnosed. This repair will likely involve diagnosing and replacing the vehicle's communication module and related wiring, plus inspecting the brake pedal assembly for the source of the noise.

Electrical System, vehicle Speed Control, forward Collision Avoidance →1 issue
Your 2024 ID.4 has experienced multiple serious electrical and control system failures since purchase in January 2025, including a complete shutdown requiring towing, repeated warning messages about switches, key recognition, and motor problems, and most critically, an incident on November 8 where the vehicle suddenly stopped, jerked violently, showed a battery overheating error, and accelerated on its own while you were driving with family. The dealership has visited the service center multiple times but has not provided a permanent fix, only attributing issues to recalls. This requires immediate diagnostic evaluation of the electrical system, battery management system, and forward collision avoidance/vehicle control components to identify the root cause and prevent further safety incidents.

Vehicle Speed Control →1 issue
While parking your 2024 Volkswagen ID.4, you pressed the brake pedal to stop, but the vehicle accelerated unexpectedly instead of braking, causing it to hit three parked cars in succession. The brake pedal remained pressed during the incident, but the vehicle did not respond to your braking input. The airbags did not deploy and no one was injured. The manufacturer has been notified and is investigating the brake system failure.

Fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your ID.4's battery drains much faster than advertised — you're losing about 3-4 miles of range for every 1 mile you actually drive, meaning a 45-mile trip on a fully charged battery consumes 60+ miles of available range. This is a known recall issue, but your local VW dealership has not been able to provide a solution. The battery may need diagnostics or replacement to restore proper range performance.

Your car has been at the dealership since September 2025 for a safety recall repair, but after more than 3 months it still hasn't been completed. The dealership says a diagnostic scan tool needed to perform the recall is malfunctioning, and their IT department hasn't been able to fix it despite multiple service requests and attempted software updates. Volkswagen customer service and regional technical support have tried to help resolve the issue but have been unable to find a solution. Repairing this issue will require Volkswagen's IT department to successfully diagnose and fix the malfunctioning scan tool so the dealership can complete the safety recall.

Electrical System,unknown Or Other,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your ID.4's battery isn't holding a charge as long as expected, and the vehicle won't charge properly using Type 1 or Type 2 chargers — the dealership says the onboard charging module is faulty. You've also had faulty door locking sensors that required a recall repair. With multiple safety issues appearing within the first 7,000 miles, you're concerned about the vehicle's reliability. Fixing this will likely require replacement of the onboard charging module and potentially inspection or replacement of the door locking sensors.
