While driving at about 30 mph on a gravel country road, your Compass suddenly accelerated on its own to a high speed without you controlling it. The vehicle flew across an intersection and over a hill, then came down hard and sustained significant damage including a busted tire, rim, passenger window, mirror, and suspension spring. The car is currently not drivable. A mechanic will need to inspect the throttle control system, fuel system, and suspension components to determine what caused the unintended acceleration.

Your car's accelerator pedal seized while driving at low speed, and the check engine and brake warning lights came on and stayed on. The dealership told you the damage was too extensive to repair economically. Even though you found this matches a known recall (NHTSA campaign 10V234000), your vehicle's identification number wasn't included in that recall, and the manufacturer won't cover it. The issue likely involves the electronic throttle control system and may require replacement of the accelerator pedal assembly, throttle body, or engine control module.

Filed: Dec 2021

Your CVT transmission is slipping, which causes your Jeep to stumble and hesitate when you pull away from a stop, especially when turning the steering wheel. The problem feels like the wheels are skipping or not responding until the transmission shifts, then it goes away. Two shops have confirmed the CVT transmission is slipping and failing. This is happening with less than 150,000 miles on the vehicle, and the transmission fluid has been checked multiple times and is never low. The transmission may need to be serviced, rebuilt, or replaced to fix the slipping issue.

Filed: Jun 2020

Your transmission is overheating at highway speeds. When the transmission oil temperature warning light comes on, the engine RPMs increase but you lose acceleration power, which can be dangerous when driving on the highway. The transmission fluid may need to be replaced or the transmission cooling system may need repair.

Your front subframe rusted and cracked while driving at low speed (3 mph), causing your vehicle to need towing. The repair shop diagnosed that your entire front subframe needed to be replaced due to the rust and fracture damage. This happened at 152,000 miles. Fixing this problem requires removing and replacing the front subframe assembly.

Your Jeep Compass sways unexpectedly while driving at various speeds. An independent mechanic found that both the front and rear cross members are rusted and need replacement, which is likely causing the swaying. The dealer was unable to diagnose or repair the issue. Fixing this will require replacing the rusted cross member components that support your vehicle's structure.

Your check engine light came on, and while driving on the freeway at 65 mph, your transmission warning light appeared and your car suddenly lost power to accelerate. This created a dangerous situation with a truck unable to stop in time behind you. The problem seems to happen intermittently with certain movements, causing the light to turn on and off. A mechanic will need to scan your transmission computer codes and likely inspect or service your transmission system to fix the power loss issue.

Filed: Jul 2023

Your Jeep Compass stalls out within a minute or two after you fill up with gas, especially once you're in traffic. When this happens, the engine shuts off and you lose power steering and brakes, leaving you with very little control of the vehicle. This is a consistent problem that happens every time you fill up. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the fuel system and engine controls to identify why the engine is shutting down after refueling.

Your parking brake won't hold the vehicle in place, and your regular brakes are making grinding noises. You're having difficulty coming to a complete stop, and the emergency brake won't disengage properly. This likely requires inspection and repair of both the brake system and emergency brake components.

Your Jeep's frame has severely rusted and separated at the welds where the engine and steering components attach, which is a serious safety issue affecting steering control. Multiple dashboard warning lights (traction control, ABS, and cruise control) are illuminated and these systems are no longer working. If this frame failure occurs while driving, it could cause loss of steering control and an accident.

While driving at 40 mph, your car suddenly swerved into another lane without any warning or input from you. You were able to regain control, but you've noticed the steering feels loose even during normal driving. The mechanic identified extensive corrosion on undercarriage parts and recommended significant front-end repairs to address the steering and suspension issues.

Your 2007 Jeep Compass caught fire while sitting parked in the yard, even though the engine wasn't running and the lights were off. The fire department responded and extinguished the fire, with the fire chief determining the fire was caused by an electrical problem related to the vehicle's lighting system. This issue will require a thorough electrical system inspection and likely replacement of faulty wiring or lighting components.

criticalELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Oct 2020

Your vehicle lost all electrical power without warning while driving and shut off completely while stopped at a traffic light. This sudden power loss creates a serious safety hazard since you lose power steering, brakes, and other critical systems while on the road. The electrical system will need to be diagnosed to find the root cause, which could involve checking the battery, alternator, starter, or wiring connections.

Every time you fill up your gas tank, your car stalls and shuts down while driving, forcing you to put it in park and restart it. This is a dangerous situation that occurs consistently after refueling. The issue likely involves a fuel system component that malfunctions when the tank is full, and a mechanic will need to diagnose whether it's related to the fuel pump, filler neck, or fuel tank pressure system.

The upper metal latch on your glove box has a sharp, knife-like edge that can cut your hand when you reach in. The edge was not filed smooth before the part was painted, leaving it dangerously sharp. This has already caused cuts and skin abrasion to the owner. A simple fix involves filing down the sharp edge and touching up the paint.
