NHTSA Campaign: 23V576000

Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/PANEL

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Jeep Compass vehicles. The brightness level of the instrument panel cluster (IPC) may not be adjustable due to incorrect software in the body control module (BCM). As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 101, "Control and Displays."

Risk: An IPC display that is not bright enough may not clearly show critical safety information, such as the speedometer or warning lights, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will update the body control module (BCM) software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 29, 2023. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is 88A.

NHTSA Campaign: 24V436000

Component: BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Dodge Durango, 2021-2023 Chrysler Pacifica, Jeep Grand Cherokee L, 2022 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, Chrysler Voyager, 2022-2023 Jeep Compass, Grand Cherokee, Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer, and Ram Promaster vehicles. The radio software may prevent the rearview image from displaying. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."

Risk: A rearview camera image that does not display decreases the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will update the radio software or the software will be OTA, "Over-The-Air," free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed beginning July 9, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's numbers for this recall are 66B and 79B.

Filed: Nov 2025

While driving at 65 mph, your Compass suddenly came to a hard stop that felt like hitting a wall, and a "service transmission" warning appeared on the dashboard. After the stop, your vehicle requires revving the engine to 4,000-5,000 RPM just to get moving again, and the gas pedal feels weak and unresponsive. This transmission issue could require inspection and potential fluid replacement, solenoid repair, or internal transmission service.

While driving at 35 mph and slowing down for a red light, your Compass suddenly lost power and wouldn't accelerate, even though the shifter was still in Drive. The vehicle came to a complete stop in the middle of the road with the brake light staying on. After waiting a bit, the engine started working normally again. The dealer checked it but couldn't find any problem, so no repair was made.

Filed: Oct 2025

Your 2023 Jeep Compass failed to start, though the dashboard lights came on during your attempt. The dealer determined the battery had failed and charged it, but the problem happened again after the repair. This occurred at around 38,074 miles. The issue may involve replacing the battery or investigating why it keeps failing to hold a charge.

Your instrument cluster (dashboard display) is too dim to read clearly, especially in bright sunlight, making it hard to see your speed and warning lights. This is a known safety recall issue for your vehicle, but the dealership told you it's working as designed and wants to charge you $1,600 to fix it—even though this should have been corrected at the factory. The problem persists even after the dealership claimed it was fixed.

Filed: Dec 2024

Your steering wheel has sharp plastic edges on the molding that can cut your hands while driving. The plastic finish appears to be incomplete or rough, creating a hazard when you grip the wheel on the sides. This could distract you or cause injury while operating the vehicle. The steering wheel trim will likely need to be refinished or replaced to smooth out the sharp edges.

criticalSTEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
Filed: Feb 2026

While driving at highway speeds, your brakes suddenly failed completely and became hard to press, requiring extreme force to stop the vehicle and nearly causing a collision. At the same time, your dashboard showed multiple warning messages about the electronic stability control, park brake, and other systems. After the dealership held the vehicle for over 60 days and attempted repairs, the brakes and electrical system remain unstable with intermittent battery and charging warnings that haven't been permanently fixed.

NHTSA #: 11716183
Seat Belts1 issue
criticalSEAT BELTS
Filed: Jan 2026

Your 2023 Jeep Compass has a confirmed failure in the seat belt system (occupant restraint system). A dealership was authorized to repair this safety issue under warranty, but failed to perform the work while falsely documenting that you declined the repairs — which is inaccurate and may affect your warranty coverage. The repair will involve replacing the faulty seat belt components.

Electrical System,exterior Lighting,forward Collision Avoidance1 issue
criticalELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
Filed: Dec 2025

Your 2023 Jeep Compass experienced a serious electrical failure where the windshield wipers, headlights, and dashboard controls turned on and off by themselves, warning messages flashed on the screens, and most dangerously, the automatic emergency braking system shut down while you were driving. The dealership replaced your battery and reset system errors, but the same problem happened again the next day on the highway, creating a dangerous situation with critical safety systems unavailable. The issue appears to involve the Body Control Module (the computer that controls many vehicle systems) and may require diagnostic testing, module replacement, or electrical/wiring repairs to restore proper communication between all vehicle systems.

NHTSA #: 11705938
Power Train1 issue
criticalPOWER TRAIN
Filed: Dec 2025

Your Power Take-Off Unit (PTU), which transfers power from the engine to the wheels, failed suddenly while driving at highway speed without any warning signs. The vehicle lost all power and became stuck on the highway, creating a dangerous situation where you couldn't safely move the car or maneuver away from traffic. Your Jeep dealership has confirmed the PTU failure is covered under the powertrain warranty, but the replacement part is currently on backorder. The repair will involve replacing the failed Power Take-Off Unit.

NHTSA #: 11704292
Engine,fuel/propulsion System1 issue
criticalENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Jun 2025

While driving on the highway at about 70 mph, your engine light turns on, the car loses power, and the start-stop feature becomes unavailable—forcing you to pull over and restart the car to regain normal operation. After a dealership software update, the problem returned the very next day with the same symptoms, creating a dangerous situation where you could be stranded in traffic.

Air Bags,forward Collision Avoidance1 issue
criticalAIR BAGS,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
CrashFiled: May 2025

Your vehicle was involved in a front-end collision, but none of the airbags deployed during the crash. This is a serious safety system failure that should have triggered the airbags to protect you.

NHTSA #: 11660451
Forward Collision Avoidance1 issue
criticalFORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
Filed: Oct 2024

Your car's automatic emergency braking system is activating unexpectedly when there's no actual collision risk, including on open highways and while turning curves. When it triggers, the brakes apply hard for 1-2 seconds with no warning, which could cause a following vehicle to rear-end you if the driver can't react in time, or cause you to lose control on a curve. This has happened over 12 times in your first year of ownership, and lowering the system's sensitivity in your vehicle settings hasn't stopped it. The fix will likely require a software update or sensor recalibration at a dealership.

Filed: Oct 2024

While driving your 2023 Jeep Compass, several warning lights came on, including the driver and passenger airbag warning lights. You pulled over and had the vehicle towed to the dealer. The dealer performed a computer repair and identified parts that need to be replaced, but those parts were on backorder so the repair wasn't completed. The issue occurred at about 14,269 miles. Fixing this will likely require replacing the airbag system components once parts become available and performing additional electrical diagnostics.

highSTEERING,SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Feb 2026

Your car sways side to side while driving and your steering wheel vibrates or shakes. This could indicate an issue with the suspension, steering components, or wheel balance that should be inspected. A mechanic will need to check your suspension system, wheel alignment, and tire balance to identify and correct the problem.

Fuel System, Gasoline1 issue
highFUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
Filed: Jan 2026

While driving at highway speed, you notice a strong fuel smell coming into your vehicle, but no warning lights appear on the dashboard. An independent mechanic found that a fuel clip needs replacement. The vehicle hasn't been repaired yet and is waiting for dealer diagnostics. Fixing this will likely involve replacing the fuel system clip to stop the leak and eliminate the odor.

Filed: Jul 2025

Two bolts that attach your wheel assembly to the vehicle's frame have broken off—one on the passenger side in April 2025 and another on the driver side in July 2025. After the first bolt broke and was serviced, Jeep service personnel did not explain why this happened or inspect the remaining bolts for similar damage. The repeated failures suggest the bolts may need to be replaced with properly torqued fasteners or the mounting points may need inspection.

Filed: Apr 2025

Your Jeep's START/STOP system warning light came on, and while driving at 25 MPH, the emergency brake activated on its own, causing the vehicle to stop. You had to press the START button again to get moving. The dealer replaced your battery, but the problem happened again even after the replacement. This issue occurred around 57,000 miles.

highVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
Filed: Jan 2025

Your 2023 Jeep Compass displayed a "Check Electronic Throttle" warning message while driving at 65 mph, and the accelerator pedal stopped responding properly. The dealer performed a software update during the first visit, but when you returned for a second diagnosis, the problem wasn't fixed. The issue occurred around 22,365 miles. The fix will likely involve a throttle control system repair or reprogramming, possibly including the electronic throttle body or accelerator pedal sensor.

Filed: Oct 2024

Your GPS map screen flashes between dark mode and bright white when you drive under street lights at night, creating a distracting glare that can temporarily blind you while driving. This rapid brightness change is a safety concern that has caused you to nearly have an accident and requires you to cover the screen to drive safely. The dealership has visited four times without resolving the issue, though Chrysler's tech team is investigating whether this is a software or light sensor design problem that may affect multiple vehicles.
