OUR 2007 JEEP COMPASS HAS BEEN STALLING COMPLETELY (ENGINE SHUTS OFF) SHORTLY AFTER WE FILL UP THE GAS TANK. THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR AROUND ONE YEAR. IT HAS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING OR STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, LESS THAN A MILE FROM THE GAS STATION, USUALLY WITHIN A FEW MINUTES OF PUMPING THE GAS. WE FEAR FILLING UP THE TANK TO THE TOP BECAUSE THE CAR HAS STALLED IN LANES OF TRAFFIC. IN THE BETTER CASES, IT STALLS AT A RED LIGHT. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION. WE WERE ENCOURAGED TO FILE THIS REPORT AFTER CORRESPONDING ONLINE WITH OTHER JEEP OWNERS WHO EXPERIENCED THIS EXACT SAME ISSUE.

IT ONLY DOES IT AFTER REFUELING. I AM TOLD I NEED TO REPLACE THE GAS TANK TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. THEY TELL ME GAS IS GOING BACK INTO THE CHARCOAL CANISTER MESSING WITH THE COMPUTER. A BAD VALVE IN THE GAS TANK, REQUIRING THE ENTIRE GAS TANK TO BE REPLACED. I HAVE BEEN DOING SOME RESEARCH ON THIS ISSUE AND FINDING A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE IT IS NOT JUST A JEEP COMPASS ISSUE.

STALLS AFTER FILL UP. WE DO NOT TOP OFF OR OVERFILL THE TANK. EVERYTIME WE FILL THE TANK UP TO THE AUTOMATIC SHUT OFF, THE ENGINE STALLS WITHIN ABOUT 30 SECONDS. GENERALLY, THE ENGINE WILL STALL IF IDLING AT A STOP LIGHT AFTER FILLUP. THE ENGINE DOES NOT STALL IF THE VEHICLE IS RUNNING ABOVE 25-30 MILES PER HOUR. THE ENGINE STARTS RIGHT BACK UP WITHOUT PROBLEM, BUT WILL CONTINUE TO STALL. AFTER VEHICLE HAS BEEN DRIVEN A FEW MILES, THE STALLING ISSUE DISAPPEARS ENTIRELY.

THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE HOWEVER, THE FAILURE REOCCURRED AFTER DRIVING AT 35 MPH AND 55 MPH. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS AT A FULL TANK OF FUEL, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO START. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DEALER WHERE THE FAILURE WAS UNDETERMINED. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE CLEANED AND ADJUSTED, THE PURGE VALVE, THE SPARK PLUG, THE FUEL CAP, THE AIR VENT FILTER, AND THE CANISTER CONTROL MONITOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000.

I PURCHASED THE 2007 JEEP WITH LOW MILEAGE FOR MY CHILD'S FIRST CAR. UPON THE FIRST REFUEL THE CAR HAS EXPERIENCED STALLING WITHIN A HAL MILE OF REFUELING. THE CAR WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES, AS WELL AS TO THE NEIGHBORNING JEEP DEALER. TIME AFTER TIME I WAS ADVISED THE ISSUE COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. TODAY UPON REFUELING THE CAR STALLED UPON LEAVING THE GAS STATION AGAIN. THERE APPEARS TO BE A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF COMPLAINTS AND RESEARCH ONLINE THAT I WAS SHOCKED TO LEARN A RECALL HAD NOT BEEN ISSUED FOR THIS EXTREME SAFETY ISSUE. THE STALLING OCCURS AT A DIFFERENT TIME LEAVING NO GAS STATION, AT THE FIRST MOMENT OF IDLING, AFTER TRAVELING A SHORT DISTANCE. THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN FOR ANY DRIVER ALTHOUGH EXTREMELY SO FOR A NEWLY LICENSED DRIVER.

IF IT DOESN'T COMPLETELY SHUT OFF THE SENSATION TO CUT OFF IS DEFINITELY FELT. I ORIGINALLY THOUGHT IT WAS THE SPARK PLUGS AND HAD THOSE REPLACED, HOWEVER, THE SITUATION CONTINUES TO PERSIST. I HAVE BEEN TOLD ON ONE OR MORE OCCASIONS IT MAY BE THE FUEL PUMP. I WAS RECOMMENDED I TAKE MY VEHICLE DIRECTLY TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE OTHER ISSUE THAT IS ALSO VERY PRONOUNCED IS THE NOISE MY ENGINE MAKES WHILE IDLING. IT CAN BEST DESCRIBED AS A LOUD WHIRLING SOUND BUT NOT QUITE A RATTLE. I HAVE NEVER HEARD MY CAR SOUND SO NOISY. I HAVE NOTICED PERHAPS IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS COME ON INVOLUNTARILY WITHOUT ME ENGAGING THEIR USE. I HAVE SEARCHED JEEP'S WEBSITE REGARDING ANY RECALL INFORMATION ON THESE AFOREMENTIONED ISSUES BUT TO NO AVAIL.

THIS ALMOST RESULTED IN A MAJOR ACCIDENT ON INTERSTATE 95 ON 11/14/2015 THIS NEED TO BE A RECALL IT IS NOT A ISOLATED PROBLEM READ ANY GOOGLE SEARCH ON LINE AND THERE ARE THOUSAND OF OWNERS WITH THE SAME ISSUE TRYING TO FIND OUT WHAT I WRONG AND A FIX

AFTER REFUELING, VEHICLE STARTS UP AND DRIVES AS NORMAL FOR A SHORT TIME UNTIL REACHING THE FIRST STOP OR STOPLIGHT, AT WHICH POINT THE ENGINE RETURNS TO IDLE. THE ENGINE WILL BEGIN TO SPUTTER/WEAKEN (FULL FOOT ON THE GAS BUT REACTS AS IF IT IS ONLY DOWN 1/4 OF THE WAY), THE OIL LIGHT TURNS ON, AND THEN SUBSEQUENTLY DIES WHILE STILL IN DRIVE. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST 5 TIMES SINCE THIS FIRST OCCURRED ON JAN. 31, 2015. EVERY TIME IT OCCURS, IT IS IMMEDIATELY AFTER REFUELING, DESPITE USING DIFFERENT GAS STATIONS AND BRANDS. FIRST EVEN OCCURRED WHILE I WAS TURNING LEFT FROM A LIGHT INTO ANOTHER PARKING LOT. (SPUTTER, THEN DIED) ANOTHER EVENT WAS WHILE I WAS IDLING AT A RED LIGHT. (ENGINE COMPLETELY DIED) THE MOST RECENT EVENT OCCURRED WHILE I WAS DRIVING 45 MPH DOWN THE ROAD, AND IT BEGAN TO SPUTTER AND WEAKEN AFTER THEN MAKING A RIGHT HAND TURN, UPON WHICH I PULLED THE CAR OVER IN THE ROAD, TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND THEN BACK ON AGAIN. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS IF I HAD BEEN ON A HIGHWAY.

LONG BEACH CA DEALERSHIP. I THINK THEY CHARGED US A FEE TO HOOK IT UP TO THE COMPUTER, THEY COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM, AND SAID IT WAS NOT THE BATTERY. MILEAGE 104,000, WE TRIED TO START OUR JEEP, AND IT WOULDN'T START AT ALL. WE HAD IT TOWED TO BILOXI MS DEALERSHIP AND WE TOLD THEM THIS HAD HAPPENED BEFORE. THE ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON AGAIN AND ANOTHER LIGHT I CANT REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS FOR. THEY HOOKED IT UP TO THEIR COMPUTER AND IT TOLD THEM IT WAS THE FUEL PUMP. THEY PROCEEDED TO START TO REPLACE IT, BUT, BEFORE THEY DID, THEY CAME TO US AND HAD US LOOK AT THE CONNECTOR SWITCH FOR THE FUEL PUMP. IT HAD MELTED, HAD BURNS ON IT, AND HAD MELTED THROUGH THE PUMP. WHY THIS IS NOT A SAFETY RECALL IS BEYOND ME WHEN I SEE OTHERS HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM! THE MECHANIC SAID WE WERE LUCKY THIS THING HAD NOT CAUGHT ON FIRE WHILE WE WERE DRIVING IT!! AND EVEN MORE DISTURBING, THE FUEL PUMP IS LOCATED UNDER THE BACKSEAT! CAR ENGINE STALLING AND IMPOSSIBLE TO ACCELERATE, TOOK TO DEALERSHIP FOR A TUNE UP 11//09. DEALER CHANGED COUPLE OF PLUGS BUT NOTHING ELSE WAS NEEDED. 1/10 CAR TOWED TO DEALER. DASHBOARD LIGHTS WERE ACTING UP, ENGINE STARTED STALLING AND COULDN'T ACCELERATE, CAR SIMPLY DIED IN MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. DEALER SAID IT WAS A BAD COIL. ASKED ME IF I HAD WASHED ENGINE, ANSWER WAS NO. DEALER REPLACED COIL AND STATED PROBLEM WAS FIXED. CAR STARTED ACTING UP AGAIN. WHILE DRIVING ON 1-16 (GA), CAR WOULD STALL, COULDN'T ACCELERATE, EVEN THOUGH PEDAL WAS TO THE CAR FLOOR. DEALER WANTED TO CHARGE ME $75 TO RUN DIAGNOSTICS, REFUSED TO PAY, SAME ISSUE AS BEFORE. DEALER RAN DIAGNOSTICS FREE OF CHARGE, HOWEVER CHRYSLER STATES THERE IS NO ASSURANCE PROBLEM WILL BE COVERED. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE, MY CAR COULD DIE IN THE MIDDLE OF HWY WITH MY TWO KIDS INSIDE ,CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. I OWN A 2007 JEEP COMPASS THAT WAS PURCHASED NEW IN JUNE OF 2006. BEGINNING IN MAY OF THIS YEAR THE CAR BEGAN SUFFERING BOTH LOW AND HIGH SPEED ENGINE STALLS, WHERE THE WARNING 'BELL' SOUNDS, ALL OF THE DASH WARNING LIGHTS COME ON, AND THE ENGINE COMPLETELY SHUTS DOWN. TWO WEEKS AGO THE OPELIKA JEEP DEALERSHIP DID THE 'SOFTWARE UPGRADE' RECOMMENDED BY A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN, BUT OBVIOUSLY IT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. AT THE TIME THE DEALER COULD NOT 'RECREATE' THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY AT A DEALERSHIP IN UNION CITY, GA WHERE IT WAS TOWED. IN PAST FAILURES THE CAR WAS ABLE TO BE RESTARTED AFTER REMAINING TURNED OFF FOR SEVERAL MINUTES. WITH THE LATEST OCCURRENCE THE CAR WAS COMPLETELY DEAD AND THE ENGINE WOULD NOT START AT ALL. THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER LOST ITS PROGRAMMING WHEN SHE STOPPED TO PUT GAS IN THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG LIGHT ILLUMINATED, AS IF THE AIR BAG WAS NOT WORKING. THE MECHANIC ADVISED HER NOT TO PUT HER PURSE ON THE SEAT BECAUSE IT MAY CAUSE THE AIR BAG SENSOR TO DEPROGRAM ITSELF. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 17,200 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 17,150.
