INSPECTION AFTER CLUNKING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE REVEALED SEVERE ROT AND CORROSION OF THE SUBFRAME WITH THE MOUNTING FOR THE ANTI-ROLL BAR COMPLETED BROKEN AWAY FROM THE SUBFRAME. ALSO SEVERE CORROSION AROUND THE LOWER CONTROL ARM MOUNTING APPEARED TO BE CLOSE TO THE FAILURE POINT. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE JEEP DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE 10 YEAR EXTENDED WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED AND THAT I SHOULD NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE DUE TO SAFETY CONCERNS. FOUND FCA INTERNAL WARRANTY DOCUMENT ID-14-02 FOR THE SUBFRAME CORROSION ISSUE DATED 5/19/14 WHICH REFERS TO FCA SERVICE BULLETIN 23-012-14 AND STATES THAT ALL DEALER PERSONNEL ARE TO BE MADE AWARE OF THIS BULLETIN. I HAVE A RECEIPT FOR OTHER REPAIRS FROM AN FCA DEALER DATED 7/28/14, 2 MONTHS AFTER THE WARRANTY BULLETIN DATE AND THERE WAS NO NOTIFICATION GIVEN ABOUT THE INSPECTION MANDATED UNDER THE WARRANTY AND NOTHING NOTED ON THE RECEIPT. THUS THERE WAS NO WAY FOR ME TO KNOW ABOUT THIS WARANTY AND SAFETY ISSUE WHICH I AM NOW TOLD HAS EXPIRED FOR MY VEHICLE. PER DEALER INSTRUCTION, I CALLED FCA CUSTOMER CARE AND WAS ALSO TOLD THE WARRANTY FOR MY VEHICLE HAD EXPIRED AND MY ONLY CHOICE WAS TO PAY FOR REPAIRS MYSELF. IN SCROLLING THROUGH THE COMPLAINTS ALREADY NOTED IN THE NHTSA SITE, I SEE NUMEROUS MENTIONS OF THIS PROBLEM WITH MANY INDICATING COMPLETE SUBFRAME AND SUSPENSION FAILURE WITH INJURY ONLY BEING PREVENTED BY THE SLOW OPERATING SPEED AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE. THIS PROBLEM IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT WHERE IMPROPER MATERIALS AND/OR COATINGS WERE USED BY FCA ON THESE COMPONENTS. FOR REFERENCE MY 1998 DODGE NEON HAS NO SUCH PROBLEM AFTER 21 YEARS AS IT USED GALVANIZED COATING ON THIS CRITICAL COMPONENT. FCA NEEDS TO ISSUE A RECALL AND PAY ALL ASSOCIATED COSTS FOR THIS SAFETY RELATED ISSUE AND BE LIABLE FOR ANY INJURIES RESULTING FROM THESE FAILURES.

THIS JEEP COMPASS WAS PURCHASED FOR OUR COLLEGE AGE DAUGHTER IN MARCH 2019, TODAY WHILE DRIVING, HER REAR DRIVER SIDE WHEEL MADE A LOUD NOISE THEN FELT LIKE IT 'DROPPED' AND UPON GETTING STOPPED, SHE DIDN'T WRECK THANK GOD, AS SHE WAS PULLING INTO OUR DRIVE. UPON INSPECTION IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT HER REAR CROSSMEMBER HAD RUSTED INTO. I SEARCHED AND FOUND THAT THERE HAD AT ONE TIME BEEN A RECALL ON THIS PARTICULAR PART DUE TO EXCESSIVE RUST FROM THE SALT BELT STATES. WE ARE IN KY BUT WHEN WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IT WAS TITLED IN MICHIGAN, WHICH IS MOST DEFINITELY IN THAT SALT BELT. I AM NOT SURE WHY THIS RECALL WAS NOT COMPLETED BY THE FORMER OWNER BUT I BELIEVE IT SHOULD BE CORRECTED NO MATTER THE AGE OF THE VEHICLE. THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED MY DAUGHTER TO BE IN A VERY SERIOUS ACCIDENT. WE HAD NO INFORMATION ABOUT ANY RECALL THAT HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN ISSUED.

WHILE DRIVING FROM THE FUEL STATION AND MAKING A LEFT TURN, THE CROSS MEMBER FRACTURED INTO THE TIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS UNABLE TO BE DRIVEN. THE VEHICLE WAS NEAR A REPAIR FACILITY AND THE MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THAT THE CROSS MEMBER HAD EXTENSIVE RUST TO THE POINT THAT IT FRACTURED INTO THE FRAME. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TOWED TO A SECOND FACILITY FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. A DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE CONTACT WAS UNCERTAIN IF THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN MANUFACTURER EXTENDED WARRANTY CAMPAIGN NUMBER: X69 (FRONT AND REAR CROSS MEMBER CORROSION) AND TSB NUMBER: 23012-14. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

NOT A RECALL THOUGH. NOW TWO YEARS LATER THE REAR HAS THE SAME PROBLEM BUT IT IS NOT COVERED BECAUSE IT HAD A TEN YEAR EXPIRATION FROM DATE OF MANUFACTURE. THIS IS A KNOWN DEFECT FROM JEEP AND SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD A TIME LIMIT PLACED ON IT. THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED AND REPLACED. JEEP KNOWS THEY ARE DEFECTIVE ITS JUST A MATTER OF TIME.

I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE AND PUT $423 INTO THE FRONT END REPLACING ROTORS, BRAKES, WHEEL BEARINGS, HUB ASSEMBLY AND CONTROL ARM BUSHINGS ONLY TO TAKE IT TO A GARAGE TO FIND OUT WHY IT WAS STILL IMPOSSIBLE TO DRIVE SAFELY. I WAS TOLD BY TWO DIFFERENT GARAGES THAT IT ISN'T SAFE TO DRIVE BECAUSE THE STRUTS AND WHOLE FRONT END IS DAMAGED BEYOND REPAIR THAT WOULD COST MORE THAN THE VEHICLE IS WORTH. ALSO THE CAR DEALERSHIP HAS REMOVED THE AIRBAGS AND NOW MADE IT NONSTICKERABLE. YOU CAN'T DRIVE IT WITHOUT THE VEHICLE FEELING LIKE THE FRONT END IS GONNA FALL OUT AND IS UNABLE TO CONTROL THE STEERING.

THE FRONT LEFT TIRE WAS POINTING OUT AND THE STEERING WHEEL WAS OFF CENTER. I TOOK IT TO THE GARAGE AND THE MAIN CROSS MEMBER RUSTED THROUGH AND BROKE. I CONTACTED JEEP AND THEY SAID THAT THERE WAS AN EXTENDED 10 YEAR WARRANTY ON THIS PARTS DUE TO THE SAME ISSUES. HOWEVER, THE 10 YEAR WARRANTY RAN OUT IN JULY 2016. IF THEY KNOW THAT THERE ARE ISSUES AND ALREADY EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR 10 YEARS; WHY DON'T THEY MAKE IT RIGHT ON ALL THE VEHICLES.

REAR CROSS BAR AXLE IS DEFECTIVE. THE WHEEL SUSPENSION IS DETERIATED TO THE POINT THAT THE WHEELS PROTRUDE OUWARD FROM THE VEHICLE CAUSING EXTREME WEAR ON THE INSIDE PART OF THE REAR TIRES TO THE POINT OF WIRES ON RADIAL TIRES ARE EXPOSED. THE OUTSIDE PART OF THE TIRES SHOW MINIMUM WEAR. MECHANICS SAY THIS CROSS BAR AXLE IS POOR QUALITY STEEL OR STEEL THAT WASN'T CURED AND FINISHED PROPERLY. THE CROSS BAR AXLE IS LITERALLY ERODING WITH HOLES OCCURRING RIGHT THROUGH THE AXLE ITSELF. FEAR IS THE CAR IS BECOMING TOO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE WITHOUT FEAR THAT UPON HITTING A BUMP THE REAR WHEELS WILL SPREAD APART AND THE CAR FALL TO THE GROUND.

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 200,000.

I WAS NEVER TOLD THIS INFORMATION WHEN I PURCHASED THIS CAR THAT IT WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND SHOULD HAS BEEN REPAIR BEFORE BEING SOLD TO ANYONE OR AT LEAST INSPECTED. STARTED HEARING CLUNKING NOISE UNDERNEATH THE FRONT. TOOK TO MECHANIC IMMEDIATELY AND HE SAID MY FRONT CROSSMEMBER WAS RUSTED OUT. HE TOLD ME JEEP COMPASS HAD ISSUED A EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE PROBLEM. T.S.B 23-012-14 IS THE SERVICE BULLETIN NUMBER. MY MECHANIC ADVISED ME THAT IT WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE AND I WAS LUCKY TO EVEN GET IT THERE. I CALLED MY LOCAL CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP DEALER TO GET PROBLEM FIXED. THEY TOLD ME IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY AND I ARRANGED A TOW TO GET IT THERE. HOWEVER ABOUT 10 MINUTES LATER THE DEALER SAID IT WOULD NOT BE COVERED BECAUSE IT WAS NOT PURCHASED IN ONE OF THE SALT BELT STATES BUT WAS BUILT IN THE TIME FRAME UNDER WARRANTY. IT WAS BOUGHT IN V.A. AND WAS NOT COVERED, BUT WEST VIRGINIA IS COVERED AND THAT IS ONLY 62 MILES OR ABOUT A 50 MINUTES. IN MY OPINION ANY JEEP SHOULD BE COVERED FOR THE DEFECT IF THEY HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM ESPECIALLY IF THEY WAS BUILT AT THE SAME TIME. WHEN I SEEN THAT PART I COULD NOT BELIEVE HOW FAR GONE IT WAS. SCARY REALLY. MY FAMILY LIVING IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS ALL THE OTHER FAMILIES IN THE SALT BELT STATES.

FRONT ENGINE CRADLE/SUB FRAME BROKE IN HALF WHILE DRIVING ON A CITY STREET CAUSING LOSS OF CONTROL AND DAMAGE TO ADDITIONAL PARTS INCLUDING RACK AND PINION, CONTROL ARMS, ETC. AFTER EXAMINATION OF THE ENGINE CRADLE/SUB FRAME BY A MECHANIC AND MYSELF IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE ENGINE CRADLE/SUB FRAME HAD RUSTED SO SEVERELY THAT BROKE IN HALF UNDER THE NORMAL WEIGHT AND DRIVING STRESSES OF THE VEHICLE. EXAMINATION OF THE REAR SUB FRAME SHOWS THE SAME SIGNS OF RUST WHICH INCLUDE NUMEROUS HOLES APPROXIMATELY 1/2" +/- IN DIAMETER. THE UNI-BODY OF THE VEHICLE HAS NO SURFACE RUST OR MORE SEVERE RUST LOCATED ON ANY AREA ON THE VEHICLE. THE RUST IS SOLELY ISOLATED ON THE FRONT ENGINE CRADLE/SUB FRAME AND REAR SUB FRAME. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS AND PREMATURE FAILURE OF A VEHICLE.

EVERY YEAR AT TIME OF INSPECTION, THE JEEP COMPASS FAILS INSPECTION DUE TO BAD LOWER BALL JOINT. REPLACEMENT COSTS THE OWNER APPROX. $500 ANNUALLY. THIS IS UNACEPTABLE, BALL JOINTS SHOULD LAST A LOT LONGER THAN THIS AND WOULD IF THEY HAD ADEQUATE GREASE AND GREASE FITTING WHERE GREASE COULD BE ADDED TO THE BALL JOINTS. JUST SO WE ARE CLEAR, THE BOOTS COVERING THE BALL JOINTS WHERE THE GREASE SHOULD BE WERE IN PERFECT CONDITIONSO THIS WAS NOT A PROBLEM WITH SOMETHINGS BE TORN OF MISUSED. *TR

I TOOK MY CAR TO MY MECHANIC TO HAVE THE FRONT END CHECKED BECAUSE OF CLUNKING NOISES ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. THE MECHANIC FOUND THE FRONT LEFT LOWER BALL JOINT/CONTROL ARM IN NEED OF REPLACEMENT. I'VE ALREADY REPLACED BOTH OUTER TIE ROD ARMS (AT 75,000 MI). THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT BOTH PROBLEMS ARE A COMMON OCCURRENCE ON ALL JEEP MODELS. THE REPAIR WILL COST $509.00 . AS THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE, I WOULD REQUEST THAT NHTSA PLEASE INVESTIGATE THE SUSPENSION PROBLEMS ON JEEP COMPASSES. *TR

MY WIFE'S 2007 JEEP COMPASS 4X4 LTD WAS TAKEN TO OUR LOCAL JEEP DEALERSHIP IN EDGEWOOD, MD FOR A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE. A MECHANIC ON DUTY NOTIFIED US THAT IN ADDITION TO THE OIL CHANGE, WE WOULD NEED TO HAVE THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE BALL JOINT (LOWER) REPLACED BECAUSE IT WAS "LOOSE". THE MECHANIC DESCRIBED THE PROBLEM AS SOMETHING SERIOUS THAT NEEDED TO BE TAKEN CARE OF IMMEDIATELY SINCE THE WHEEL COULD FALL OFF IN EXTREME CONDITIONS. LESS EXTREME CONDITIONS WERE DESCRIBED TO US AS LEADING TO A POSSIBLE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL. THE MECHANIC ALSO MENTIONED TO US THAT THIS WAS A COMMON OCCURRENCE WITH THE JEEP COMPASSES HE HAS WORKED ON. WE TOOK IMMEDIATE ACTION TO FIX THE CAR TO KEEP IT DRIVABLE BY HAVING THE DEALERSHIP REPLACE THE BALL JOINT THE FOLLOWING DAY - SAFETY WAS OUR PRIMARY CONCERN. WE TOOK STEPS TO CONTACT CHRYSLER'S CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS TO SEE IF THIS WOULD BE SOMETHING THEY WOULD CONSIDER REPLACING SINCE OUR CAR WAS BEYOND WARRANTY (61,000 MILES) - THEY DISMISSED OUR CLAIM AND WOULD NOT REIMBURSE US FOR THE WORK DONE OR THE REPLACEMENT PARTS. HAVING DONE SOME RESEARCH, IT SEEMS MOST JEEP MODELS FROM 2007 THROUGH 2009 HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING BALL JOINT PROBLEMS LEADING TO RECALLS - THE COMPASS IS NOT YET ON THE RECALL LIST. A BALL JOINT FAILING AFTER 2 YEARS OF OWNING THE CAR AND ALL HIGHWAY MILES (NO OFF-ROADING, NO CITY DRIVING, NO BUMPY ROADS, ETC.) JUST SEEMS VERY ABSURD TO US. THIS SEEMS TO ME LIKE IT?S MORE OF AN ISSUE WITH DEFECTIVE PARTS PLACED IN THE COMPASS THAN AN ISSUE OF WEAR AND TEAR. THE CONSEQUENCES OF A FAILURE SUCH AS THIS WHILE MY PREGNANT WIFE WAS DRIVING THE CAR COULD HAVE BEEN DISASTROUS. IF THE MECHANIC ON DUTY IS SEEING THIS PART FAILURE IN MORE THAN ONE COMPASS, IT COULD MEAN A BIGGER PROBLEM EXISTS, PRESENTING A DANGER TO MANY COMPASS OWNERS. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS! *TR

I WENT IN TO GET MY OIL CHANGED AND MY TIRES ROTATED AND WAS TOLD MY CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND HERE IS WHAT THEY PUT ON MY INVOICE (VERBATIM) "NEEDS BOTH LOWER CONTROL ARMS PASSENGER SIDE FRONT HAS A REALLY BAD BALL JOINT AND LEFT OUTER TIE ROD END IS BAD ALSO PRICE TO REPLACE BOTH OUTER TIE ROD ENDS AND BOTH LOWER BALL JOINTS $1083 PLUS TAX AND THAT INCLUDES THE ALIGNMENT!!!!!!!!! VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE WITH BALL JOINT IS THIS CONDITION!!!!!!!!!" (LITERALLY WITH ALL THE EXCLAMATION MARKS.) I TOOK THE CAR SOMEWHERE ELSE TO GET REPAIRED (FOR HALF THE COST) HOWEVER I BELIEVE THIS IS A PART FAILURE AS I HAVE LESS THAN 50K MILES. *TR
