2017 Jeep Cherokee Other Problems

To Whom It May Concern, I am filing a safety complaint regarding my 2017 Jeep that is currently under recall for the Power Transfer Unit (PTU). I experienced a very frightening situation while driving in traffic when my vehicle would not properly stay in place, and I had to keep firm pressure on the brake to prevent it from rolling back into traffic.

The issue involved a malfunction of the two-speed Power Transfer Unit, which is available for inspection upon request. This malfunction created a serious safety risk, as it could have caused me to crash or resulted in another vehicle crashing into me. The problem was confirmed by an auto machanic that came to my home to inspect the vehicle because I was unable to drive it to get it inspected.

We continuously receive dashboard messaging related to this defect to replace the PTU. All lights illuminate near the shift knob, too. I'm scared I will lose motive power and cause a crash without warning or lose park function to cause injury.

I had my 2017 Jeep repaired at the mechanic on January 30. I drove it straight home from the mechanic and within five minutes the vehicle was engulfed in flames. The service provided was tires, struts control arms, and of course placing the tire sensors on the car, no electrical work and no prior incidents of electrical concerns.

When I shifted vehicle to reverse a message of “service shifter” came on dash screen. No accident resulted but felt unsafe as to what would happen if not serviced. Mechanics that have been contacted has never heard of service shifter message.

The incident happened in a parking lot. Backing out of the parking space, there was a delivery truck parked right behind me. Backing out of my parking space, I hit the bumper of the truck (no damage to the truck).

Hello, what I am trying to find out is if the NHTSA has ever got notification or investigated what folks call the Jeep Death Wobble. We just got the Jeep and are looking to flat tow the vehicle behind our Motorhome and folks tell us that Jeep issued a Service Bulletin regarding the death wobble and would require modifications to the electrical system to resolve the problem.

I was driving and my car just stop on the freeway out of no where, no warning, no lights on absolutely nothing, it wouldn't start, after a couple minutes it started up again. later that day the same thing happened. Thank God an accident did not happen specially when it stop on the freeway.

on 11/1/25 we were driving our Jeep and it malfunctioned while at a stop light. We heard a loud "clunk" and the car would barely go and if we tried to put in park, it would continue to roll. We were on top of a hill so thankfully we didnt roll back or into traffic.

I purchased 2017 Jeep Cherokee from Jim Riehls Friendly dealership 2/2022. On 5/2023, the parking brake engaged while I was pulling out of my driveway and I blocked on coming traffic in my neighborhood. Called a tow truck and took to my mechanic (Kay's Auto Shop).

I purchased this vehicle two weeks ago from a certified used car dealership. The vehicle has 54000 miles on it. From day one, it has had an intermediate long start.

Someone I know has the same make/model/and year of my car and there car did this and then when she was going 70mph her car slammed by it's self into park at no warning. This terrifies me to drive this car.

The back up camera gets snowy at time - you can not tell what you are looking at when trying to back out of a spot where you can not see around other cars - various time when putting in reverse - radio volume takes a minute to adjust at various time - radio has been replaced - has been happening for several months on and off

'service required' light came on, shifter bezzle needs replaced according to dealer, they said it is not covered under my extended warranty, they cannot get the part for weeks and said I cannot drive it because the shifter could 'go out at any time', it is $450 for the part alone, and now need a rental.

I closed the trunk door but the indicator on the dashboard is still saying that the lift gate is open. I checked to make sure that nothing was blocking it's way. There was no prior indications.

2017 44k miles just bought 3 days ago and service shifter light comes on while in park and the prnd all light up red. Only way to make it go away is turn car off and back on. Happened again later that day.

If it is below freezing outside, my gas door will not open. When I press the open button inside my car, it makes a sound as if it is trying to open, but will not budge. Even when I try to open it manually, it won't open without extreme force and several minutes of trying.

Service shifter light comes on and shifter lights all turn red. Initially would reset after restart, now stays on. Started at 20,000 miles, now at 32,800.

My "shifter needs service" light comes on, along with all of the other lights and I am forced to stop my car, turn off the engine and restart the vehicle in order for the light to go away. I have it scheduled for service but they will need it a minimum of 2 days. It seems like a lot of other jeep cherokee owners are having similar issues yet there is no recall on this.

2017 jeep cherokee limited - 36,600 miles. Started my car, put it in reverse and the shifter servicer message appeared on my dash and all of the lights where my shifter is located turned red. Turned the car off, restarted it and the message was gone and lights were off.

While I was driving a 'service shifter' light suddenly appeared in my center display and all the red lights next to the shifter were lit up. Not sure why or what to do about it.

While driving on a city street an indicator light in the dash came on that stated "service shifter". Then next to the actual shifter all of the prnd lights lit up and stayed lit for the entirety of the drive.

Service shifter lights appears on dashboard and shifter gear lights are all in red. The only 'fix' I have read about is to turn the car off and on again to 'reset' the car computer. The light came on as I was driving down the a city street.

While driving down the road my car displayed service shifter and all the lights on my shifter were lit up.

The rear back up camera cuts out while backing up and goes to static.

2017 cherokee had a "service shifter" alert pop up and all the lights on the shifter lit up red. Have 33,700 miles. Alert came on driving straight on a city street.

Shifter keeps coming up with error and shows on screen and all lights light up on shifting panel while moving or sitting still. If you stop car and turn off, then turn back on seems to reset.

While driving I hear a notification bing and the dash says 'service shifter' and all the shifter's indicator lights are solid red. Apparently this happens a lot and restarting the engine only temporarily resets the computer to acceptable.

My service gear shifter light keeps coming on. All bottoms light up on shifter. Feels kinda like it having trouble shifting.

Gear shifter: all lights come on and an error code stating that shifter needs to be serviced. This has happened twice within approximately one month apart. If the vehicle is turned off and restarted the error code does not return.

3/15/2019 at 12:15 I was driving back to work after lunch and my center display panel suddenly change from displaying MPH to a message that read "service shifter". When I looked at my gear shift all lights were lit instead of just d. I immediately returned home (I was a mile away) and put the car into park.

Service shifter appears on dash while driving and all lights on shifter illuminate. This has occurred twice-- once when starting the vehicle from being parked for several hours and again once the car was driving at about 35-40mph. Each time I cut the car off and restarted the vehicle and the lights disappeared.

My car has turned off twice in the last week within my first 3 miles while driving. This happened on 2 separate days. No warning signs, no codes/notification lights on dashboard.

Car was purchased in april 2017. Twice the vehicle wouldn't start for no apparent reason. The car is parked on the street and wouldn't start early morning on a saturday and again late afternoon on this past tuesday.

Shimmy when accelerating from a stop about 18 MPH. Intensity changed upon torque and turning angles...most noticeable on right hand turns. Feels at times like rf wheel is wobbly (only for a second and then goes away).
