criticalELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Feb 2019

Your car's ignition key won't turn to start the engine, and the car won't start even after removing and reinserting the key. This leaves you stranded and unable to drive to the hospital in an emergency, which is a serious safety concern for you and your baby.

NHTSA #: 11181269
criticalELECTRICAL SYSTEM
FireFiled: Aug 2017

Your car's alternator has repeatedly caught fire and melted while you're driving. This happened three times between February and July 2017 — each time the alternator was replaced, but it failed again within miles of leaving the repair shop. The battery connector also became dangerously hot to the touch during one incident. The underlying electrical system issue needs to be diagnosed and repaired to prevent further fire hazards.

NHTSA #: 11013323

Filed: Jul 2019

Your trunk lid pops open when you apply the brakes, which creates a safety concern if you hit a bump and the lid flies up while driving. Additionally, when you open the trunk using your key fob, your brake lights turn on unexpectedly. This appears to be a wiring or latch issue where the trunk mechanism and brake light system are connected inappropriately.

NHTSA #: 11229934
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Mar 2018

The backlighting for your dashboard gauges and radio buttons is flickering on and off intermittently, making it difficult or impossible to see your speed at night. This is a safety concern that's prevented you from driving the vehicle after dark. The fix will likely involve diagnosing and repairing the electrical circuit that powers the dashboard and radio illumination, which may require replacing a faulty bulb, switch, or wiring connection.

NHTSA #: 11080204
Unknown Or Other2 issues
criticalUNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Oct 2022

Your 2004 Focus experiences intermittent bucking (jerking), stalling while driving, and difficulty starting—sometimes it locks in Park and won't turn over, though waiting a bit may help. When you try to start it now, you hear clicking sounds, and the problem comes and goes unpredictably despite multiple diagnostic scans finding nothing. The issue likely involves the fuel system, ignition system, or electrical/battery connections that may need testing or replacement to identify and fix the intermittent starting and stalling problem.

NHTSA #: 11488334
mediumUNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Mar 2017

Your car's air conditioning system stopped working a few months after you bought it used. A mechanic couldn't find a replacement air hose because it's no longer being sold, and hoses from similar Ford models didn't work as a substitute. The repair may require sourcing a compatible A/C hose or finding an alternative solution from a Ford specialist.

Electrical System,unknown Or Other,engine1 issue
criticalELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
FireFiled: Apr 2023

Your car stalled while stopped at a red light and began smoking when you tried to restart it. When you opened the hood, there was a fire under the hood that became too intense to extinguish. The fire resulted in a total loss of the vehicle. The underlying electrical or engine issue that caused the stalling and fire should be investigated by a technician.

NHTSA #: 11515638
Air Bags,unknown Or Other1 issue
criticalAIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
CrashFiled: Jun 2022

You were in a rollover crash after losing control while braking, and none of your airbags deployed even though the accident was severe enough to break the back window. You and your 8-month-old daughter were in the vehicle at the time. The airbag system may need inspection to determine why it failed to activate during the collision.

NHTSA #: 11468967
Structure1 issue
criticalSTRUCTURE
Filed: Jun 2022

Your rear passenger door won't latch closed and flies open when you make turns. This is a safety issue that needs immediate attention, as an open door while driving can be dangerous. The door latch mechanism likely needs repair or replacement.

NHTSA #: 11467507
Structure,service Brakes1 issue
criticalSTRUCTURE,SERVICE BRAKES
CrashFiled: Mar 2020

You were involved in a crash after your brakes failed to stop your car. You applied the brakes with plenty of time to stop while traveling at 20 mph, but your vehicle did not come to a complete stop and hit the car in front of you. The brakes appeared to not be working correctly. A mechanic should inspect your brake system components to identify why the brakes failed to stop the vehicle.

Steering1 issue
criticalSTEERING
Filed: Jul 2018

Your steering column suddenly jammed without any warning while driving. You contacted both the dealer and Ford, but they wouldn't help because your car's VIN wasn't included in any recall for this issue. The problem occurred at around 75,000 miles. Fixing this will likely involve inspecting the steering column assembly for damage or wear and replacing any worn components.

NHTSA #: 11111687
Vehicle Speed Control1 issue
criticalVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
FireFiled: Jun 2017

Your vehicle caught fire while parked, with flames visible underneath. An investigator determined the cruise control switch caused the fire, which was extinguished by the fire department. Your vehicle was deemed a total loss and sent to a salvage yard. The cruise control switch likely needs to be replaced or the entire cruise control system may need inspection and repair.

NHTSA #: 11001698
Engine And Engine Cooling1 issue
highENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Filed: Jan 2026

Your check engine light comes on and your car jerks and stalls unexpectedly at various speeds, sometimes requiring you to wait 10 minutes before restarting. This has happened multiple times even after repairs—mechanics have replaced the PCV valve, ignition coil, and fuel relay fuse, but the stalling returns within weeks or months each time. The underlying cause of the repeated stalling has not been identified.

NHTSA #: 11710614
Power Train,electrical System,structure,fuel/propulsion System1 issue
highPOWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Aug 2019

Your 2004 Ford Focus is making a loud noise from the front of the vehicle, and your check engine light has come on. You may also notice the key getting hot in the ignition, the engine hesitating when you press the accelerator, higher fuel consumption than normal, and difficulty opening both passenger doors (one requires extra force, the other is stuck). Dealers indicated the ignition switch and engine valve may need replacement, though the exact cause of the door problems wasn't determined.

NHTSA #: 11245773
Electrical System,service Brakes,engine1 issue
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
Filed: Jul 2019

Your battery warning light flashes even when the car is off, and your engine stalls multiple times while driving, especially when you try to accelerate above 50 mph—sometimes the car shuts off completely. Your back hatch unlocks and opens by itself while you're driving. You've also replaced the thermostat and housing three times because the cooling system overheats without warning; the coolant boils over in the overflow tank, pressurizes, and shoots the cap off. Fixing these issues will likely require electrical system diagnostics, engine fuel and ignition system inspection, replacement of the latch mechanism, and a complete cooling system inspection including hoses and the radiator.

NHTSA #: 11234370
Latches/locks/linkages,fuel/propulsion System1 issue
highLATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Jul 2019

Your 2004 Ford Focus may have fuel line quick connectors that don't fully seat properly, even though they feel like they're connected all the way. Additionally, you may be unable to open the front driver's side door and both rear doors. Fixing these issues will likely involve replacing the fuel line quick connectors and repairing or replacing the door latch mechanisms.

Electrical System,engine1 issue
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
Filed: Jul 2019

Your car's stereo system is experiencing multiple issues: the passenger door speaker smells burnt and sounds like it has an internal short circuit, while the radio display intermittently fades out. Your engine is hesitating to start, and when you turn on the AC, the engine runs rough with unusual clicking sounds and sometimes the AC won't work at all. Your check engine light has come on even after you replaced the coil packs.

NHTSA #: 11230782
Engine1 issue
highENGINE
Filed: Apr 2019

Your 2004 Ford Focus hesitated and stalled while driving at low speed, triggering warning lights for the oxygen sensor, mass air flow sensor, and throttle body sensor. Since 2016, this problem only happens when the car is parked on an uphill incline facing upward. A certified mechanic determined that water is entering through the air intake (located at the front of the vehicle) and damaging the sensors. The fix would likely involve redirecting the air intake to point downward to prevent water intrusion, and replacing the damaged sensors.

NHTSA #: 11195904
Steering,electrical System,exterior Lighting1 issue
highSTEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
Filed: Jul 2018

Your instrument cluster failed, which caused your alternator to die and resulted in false warning lights on your dashboard—including battery, airbag, oil, and incorrect speed readings. Your vehicle stalled and shut off while driving in town at 30,000 miles. Fixing this will likely require replacing the instrument cluster and possibly the alternator.

NHTSA #: 11105102
Suspension1 issue
highSUSPENSION
Filed: Nov 2017

The metal subframe underneath your car has severely rusted through. The Ford dealer attributed this to your local climate and road conditions. This rust could eventually compromise the structural integrity of your vehicle's suspension system. The repair will likely involve replacing the damaged subframe component.
