Your car has about 108,000 miles and you've recently replaced the tie rods, control arms, and sway bar on the front suspension. Your mechanic found that the front subframe is severely rusted and warned that the engine could fall off if the vehicle isn't serviced immediately. The subframe corrosion is a critical structural issue that needs urgent attention before driving the car further.

When driving at speeds above 40 mph on uneven road surfaces or over bumps like manhole covers, the rear of your car sways and shimmers side to side in an extreme manner. The problem seems worse after installing new tires with good grip. A professional inspection found all vital suspension parts appear okay, and a 4-wheel alignment didn't fix the issue. You suspect there may be a design problem with the upper control arms that prevents proper camber adjustment. Fixing this may require suspension component replacement or specialized alignment work to address potential design limitations.

NHTSA #: 11173264

Filed: Jul 2016

While driving at highway speeds (50-60 mph), the front driver's side suspension spring broke in half, creating a sharp edge that punctured and shredded your tire. The vehicle had to be towed, and both the tire and spring were replaced. This type of failure can happen suddenly and affect vehicle control.

Filed: Feb 2016

Your rear coil spring has cracked and needs to be replaced. This was discovered during a service appointment at around 38,000 miles. While your car wasn't in a crash, a broken spring can affect your suspension's ability to handle bumps and support your vehicle's weight properly. The repair will involve replacing the damaged rear coil spring.

Your car's anti-theft system is causing the vehicle to lock up while you're driving, which creates a serious safety hazard. This could leave you stranded or unable to control the car on the road. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the anti-theft system's wiring or sensors and either repairing or replacing the faulty components.

Your car's sunroof suddenly shattered and exploded while you were driving on an empty road in cool weather (around 40°F), with no warning signs beforehand. This happened to a vehicle that's been well-maintained with low mileage for its age. The repair will likely require replacing the entire sunroof glass panel and checking the sunroof frame for any damage.

Filed: Jul 2023

Your driver's side door is stuck and won't open, even when you turn the key in the lock. The outer door handle broke when you tried to force it open, and manually pulling the interior cable doesn't help either. This is a safety concern because it prevents quick access to the driver's seat and could block emergency personnel from reaching occupants in an accident. The fix will likely involve replacing the door latch mechanism and possibly the door handle assembly.

Latches/locks/linkages2 issues
highLATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
Filed: Sep 2016

Your door latches — both front doors and the rear passenger door — developed cracks and failed while your car was parked. This happened at 110,000 miles and the vehicle was repaired. The door latches may need replacement to ensure your doors stay securely closed and latched.

Your rear hatch door keeps popping open on its own whenever you drive over bumps, no matter what speed you're going. The hatch latch indicator light also comes on when this happens. This has happened multiple times. The issue may involve replacing or adjusting the rear hatch latch mechanism to ensure it stays securely closed.

NHTSA #: 10893424
Power Train1 issue
criticalPOWER TRAIN
Filed: Sep 2020

Your transmission is slipping out of drive into neutral while you're driving, and it also shifts to neutral on its own when stopped. This is a serious safety issue because you could lose power while on the road. The dealer indicated a diagnostic fee would be required to identify the exact problem, which likely involves transmission repair or replacement.

Air Bags1 issue
criticalAIR BAGS
Filed: Dec 2019

While driving at about 35 mph on a country road, both the driver and passenger airbags suddenly deployed for no apparent reason—there was no accident. The passenger-side airbag or its cover broke the windshield. The driver immediately applied the brakes to stop the vehicle.

criticalPOWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
Filed: Aug 2018

Your car periodically loses all electrical power to the dashboard and battery, leaving you stranded until you jump-start it. This happens more often when you use your lights, and the car tends to stall when you stop or slow down. You've already replaced the battery and alternator, but the problem persists—sometimes it works fine for days, other times it fails within hours. Additionally, your throttle gets stuck revving high, then other times idles too low. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the charging system, electrical connections, and throttle control components to find what's causing the power loss and throttle issues.

Engine,fuel/propulsion System1 issue
criticalENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
FireFiled: Feb 2017

While driving at 55 mph, your car started smoking from the back seat and quickly filled with smoke inside. The engine shut off without warning, and you had to coast to the side of the road. A mechanic found that the oil pump had burned up completely, destroying the entire engine and making the car a total loss. This happened at around 73,000 miles.

Filed: Dec 2024

Your brake lights won't turn on, which creates a safety hazard for other drivers behind you. You've already replaced the brake light bulbs, checked the brake light switch, and inspected the fuses and wiring—all without success. This issue will likely require a deeper diagnostic of the electrical system or brake light circuit to identify what's preventing power from reaching the lights.

Filed: Jan 2023

Your check engine light is on, and you're experiencing multiple electrical and lighting issues: your headlights don't work consistently, your trunk won't latch securely even when closed, and a false warning light indicates the trunk is ajar. Additionally, your windshield wipers get stuck in the up position and won't return down. A diagnostic test found several fault codes and low battery voltage. Your mechanic has also recommended replacing inner tie rods and control arms/bushings.

Filed: Nov 2016

Your tail light bulb gets extremely hot and melts the connector, making it impossible to remove and replace just the bulb. This forces you to replace the entire tail light lens assembly at significant expense. This problem has been reported by many owners online across Focus wagons and other Ford models.

Filed: Feb 2018

Your rear right passenger door won't unlock or open. When you try to unlock it, you don't hear the solenoid (the electronic locking mechanism) engage. When you try to open the door from inside or outside, the handle feels like it's not connected to anything. The issue is likely with the door lock solenoid or the internal door latch mechanism.

Filed: Jan 2017

Your new Ohtsu FN7000 tire went completely flat within a month of installation while the car was parked, deflating in 4 hours or less. A shop inspection revealed the tire was defective with internal rubber deterioration and exposed wires, not a bent rim as initially claimed. You may want to have the other tires on your vehicle inspected to rule out similar manufacturing defects. The fix will likely involve replacing the defective tire with a quality replacement from a different manufacturer.
