AIR BAGS:FRONTAL

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2015-2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD, 3500 HD, Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Sierra 2500 HD and 3500 HD, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade and Cadillac Escalade ESV vehicles and 2014-2017 Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500, Trax, Caprice Police Pursuit Vehicle, GMC Sierra 1500, Buick Encore, and 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse, Chevrolet Spark EV and SS vehicles. In the affected vehicles, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 13, 2016. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Spark EV, Caprice PPV and SS vehicles, 2014-2017 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, 2015-2016 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Trax, Suburban and Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles, and 2015-2017 GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles. While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.

While reaching for a phone that slid off the console, your truck drifted into a parked bus. You were in an accident that caused you to lose consciousness for several days and experience severe headaches. Most concerning to you: none of the airbags deployed during the collision. The fix would likely involve a diagnostic scan of the airbag control module and inspection of airbag sensors and wiring.

The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While the contact's son was driving 25 MPH, the air bag warning light illuminated, and the driver's and passenger's side air bags deployed unintendedly. The contact stated that when the passenger's side air bag cover detached, the air bag cover flew across the interior of the vehicle. In addition, the contact stated that after the air bags had deployed, the air bags warning lights turned off. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The vehicle was scheduled to be taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 125,000.

Hi, I had all my side curtain airbags deploy in my truck without any accident and under normal driving conditions. The fronts did not deploy. I had no warning lights or airbag light prior to this event. I spoke with my insurance and they wanted to have my truck inspected. I took it to my local GM dealer. They inspected my truck and looked at the data from the airbag system and determined that they found no reason for why they should've gone off. The force from the airbag was such that I was in a daze and did not know what was going on. If this would've happened on the freeway during heavy traffic I am certain I would not have stayed in my lane and caused a very serious crash involving other vehicles. Lucky this was not the case and there were no cars close to me. The next morning when I woke up I had severe neck pain and an impaired memory. I went into urgent care to get looked at. They performed an x-ray and said it was okay and that it was just severe whiplash.

The contact owned a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado. The contact stated that while driving approximately 75 MPH, the driver lost control of the steering and drove off the road, down an embankment, and crashed at the bottom of a steep hill. During the crash, the vehicle was destroyed and severe damage to the front end occurred but the air bags did not deploy. The driver sustained a concussion and head laceration, fractured femur, injured lung, and whiplash. A police report was taken at the scene and the vehicle was towed away. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not contacted. The contact indicated that the air bag system was previously serviced under an unknown NHTSA recall. No additional information was available. The failure mileage was 123,000.

The contact owned a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated while driving approximately 45-50 MPH, the contact started feeling sick and lost control of the vehicle and drove off the roadway. It was unclear what the vehicle struck after leaving the roadway. The contact stated that there was major damage to the front bumper and steering arms of the vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy and the seat belt shoulder harness failed to secure the contact in place during the crash. The contact pressed the OnStar button for medical assistance however, the system failed to perform as needed. The contact stated that he struck the steering wheel and broke his nose in two places and also sustained a concussion. Additionally, the contact was in the hospital for three days for surgery due to bleeding on the brain. The doctors also found blood clot in the left arm and right upper thigh. The contact also had a pacemaker installed due to the impact of his chest to the steering wheel. A police report was filed. The insurance provider deemed the vehicle a total loss. The local dealer was contacted and informed of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 90,100.

On DECEMBER 14th 2021 while traveling on interstate 90 from Hardin Montana to Billings Montana I hit a large granite boulder that had fallen off of a semi, I had my cruise control set where I always set it at 77 mph. The boulder was around 500 lbs and was roughly 30 inches tall by 24 wide. It launched my truck in the air and I flew about 17 to 20 feet before touching down. I impacted the boulder just to the right of center of the bumper and it tore everything from the bumper to the firewall. Extremely violent impact and I hit my head on the sun visor and chin on the steering wheel. Not one of the airbags deployed. The first person on scene was Montana Highway Dept employee who was one minute behind me. He and myself as well as the responding highway patrol were shocked that the airbags did not deploy. Since that accident I have had multiple things wrong with my neck my knees as well as my hips and back. Im pretty sure Im messed up for life.

I GAVE THEM THE VIN, THEY EXPLAINED THAT THERE WAS TWO RECALLS, SO I MADE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THEM FIXED (BOTH SAFETY RELATED). UPON ARRIVAL - THEY SAID THERE WAS NO RECALL IN THERE SYSTEM. I CHECKED BOTH THE NHTSA AND GM RECALL SITES, AND THEY BOTH SHOW THE ISSUE AS UNRESOLVED. MANUFACTURER RECALL NUMBER 2016007, NHTSA RECALL NUMBER 16V651 AND N150822, 16V209. THE DEALERSHIP CLAIMS THERE IS NOTHING UNDER OUR VIN.

MY 84 YEAR OLD FATHER HIT A DEER ON THE RIGHT FRONT BUMPER OF HIS 2014 CHEVY SILVERADO LTZ GOING 55 MPH ON OCTOBER 30, 2014. ALL OF THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED EXCEPT FOR THE DRIVERS AIR BAG. THE DRIVERS AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. IN ADDITION TO THE DRIVERS AIR BAG NOT DEPLOYING, THERE WAS STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER SIDE BUMPER. MY FATHER TOOK HIS VEHICLE TO JAMES WOOD MOTORS DECATUR, 2111 S HWY 287, DECATUR, TX 76234, TO GET AN ESTIMATE ON REPAIRING THE VEHICLE. THEY TALKED HIM INTO TRADING HIS 2014 CHEVY SILVERADO LTZ WRECKED VEHICLE FOR A 2015 CHEVY SILVERADO LTZ. [XXX] TOLD MY FATHER THAT THEY WOULD BE SALVAGING THE VEHICLE, OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT, AND THEY ENCOURAGED HIM TO TRADE IN HIS WRECKED VEHICLE BECAUSE THE TRADE IN VALUE WOULD BE AFFECTED BY THE CRASH. KEEP IN MIND THAT MY FATHER HAD A LONG RELATIONSHIP WITH THEM WITH TRADING IN VEHICLES FOR NEWER ONES AND THEY KNEW THAT MY FATHER WAS VERY CONCERNED WITH THE TRADE-IN VALUE OF HIS VEHICLE. THEY NEVER DISCUSSED WITH MY FATHER THE FACT THAT THE DRIVERS AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. TODAY, I RAN A CAR FAX CHECK ON MY FATHER'S CRASHED VEHICLE AND THE REPORT SHOWS: NO ACCIDENTS REPORTED, NO STRUCTURAL DAMAGE REPORTED, NO AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT REPORTED. ALSO, THE CAR FAX REPORT SHOWS A NEW OWNER FROM GRAND PRAIRIE, TEXAS, THAT PURCHASED THE VEHICLE ON 3-36-2015. I THINK IT'S OUTRAGEOUS THAT JAMES WOOD MOTORS DECATUR TOOK ADVANTAGE OF MY FATHER BECAUSE OF HIS AGE, ENCOURAGED HIM TO TRADE IN HIS WRECKED VEHICLE AND THEN THEY TURNED AROUND AND SOLD THE VEHICLE TO SOMEONE WITHOUT REPORTING ANY OF THE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE AND THE FACT THAT THE DRIVERS AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY.
