NHTSA Campaign: 19V741000

Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2010-2016 4Runner, 2003-2006 Tundra, 2003-2013 Corolla, 2009-2010 Corolla Matrix, 2004-2005 RAV4, 2002-2007 Sequoia, 2011-2013 Sienna, 2008-2012 Scion xB, 2008-2009 Lexus IS-F, 2007-2012 Yaris and Lexus ES350, 2010-2017 Lexus GX460, 2002-2010 Lexus SC430, 2006-2012 Lexus IS250 and IS350 and 2010-2015 Lexus IS250C and IS350C vehicles. These vehicles had their driver or passenger frontal air bag inflators previously replaced under a prior recall using inflators of the same design. The inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.

Risk: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Fix: Toyota will notify owners. Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will replace the front driver inflator, front passenger airbag inflator, the airbag assembly, or the front passenger airbag sub-assembly and inflator. The recall began November 20, 2019. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 or Lexus customer service at 1-800-255-3987. Toyota's numbers for this recall are J0A, J0B, and J0C. Lexus' numbers for this recall are JLI, JLJ, and JLK.

NHTSA Campaign: 15V284000

Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2004-2005 Toyota RAV4 vehicles manufactured May 13, 2003, to October 25, 2005. The affected vehicles are equipped with a dual-stage driver frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture.

Risk: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Fix: Owners of these vehicles are advised not to drive their vehicles until the recall remedy has been completed. Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag, free of charge. Owners were mailed an interim notice June 17, 2015. The recall began on August 21, 2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.

Component: AIR BAGS

ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, DUE TO IMPROPER ASSEMBLY OF THE AIR BAG INFLATOR, WHICH IS USED IN THE SIDE AIR BAG, THE CURTAIN SHIELD AIR BAG, AND THE KNEE AIR BAG ASSEMBLY, SOME INFLATORS WERE PRODUCED WITH AN INSUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF THE HEATING AGENTS NECESSARY FOR PROPER AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT. IN THIS CONDITION, THE EXPANSION FORCE OF THE GAS MAY BE INSUFFICIENT TO PROPERLY INFLATE THE AIR BAG WHEN THE SRS SYSTEM IS ACTIVATED DURING A CRASH.

Risk: THIS MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE OCCUPANT IN THE INVOLVED SEATING POSITION IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SPECIFIC SRS AIR BAG. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 6, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-888-270-9371, SCION AT 1-866-548-1851, OR LEXUS AT 1-800-255-3987.

Your front passenger door's electronic lock no longer responds to the key fob, forcing you to manually lock and unlock it by reaching across the seat. This creates a security risk when you can't lock all doors remotely and a safety hazard in emergencies—if you need to evacuate quickly (such as during a fire), the passenger may struggle to find the manual unlock button while the driver can only unlock other doors via fob. Fixing this typically requires disassembling and rebuilding the door's locking mechanism.

Your check engine light has been on and off for about 50,000 miles over your vehicle's life, mostly triggered by oxygen sensor and emissions-related issues that have cost thousands in repairs and diagnostics. The light comes on so frequently that it's difficult to know when there's a real problem, and you've had to replace the oxygen sensors, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, and eventually the entire engine due to a faulty oil pump. Even though your vehicle passes emissions testing when the check engine light is off, the persistent warning light makes it hard to trust the vehicle's reliability.

Your driver's side sun visor flops down while you're driving, suddenly blocking your view of the road. The problem started gradually years ago but has gotten much worse recently. Fixing this will require replacing the visor and having it installed at a dealership.

Your VSC TRAC, VSC OFF, and ABS warning lights stay on continuously, even though no diagnostic error codes are showing when you scan the vehicle. This suggests an issue with the vehicle stability control or anti-lock brake system sensors or wiring. The problem will likely require diagnostics to identify a faulty sensor, wiring connection, or control module.

Your traction control and vehicle stability control warning lights frequently activate while driving on curves and hills, sometimes limiting your car's speed until the lights turn off. This can feel unsettling while driving, though the car returns to normal operation once the lights go out. Your Toyota dealer says they can't diagnose the issue until one of the lights stays on continuously. A computer diagnostic scan should be able to retrieve stored error codes that could help identify the underlying cause.

Your car's airbags failed to deploy during a February 2018 accident, leaving you to collide with the windshield and steering wheel. The airbag system did not function as it should have in a crash situation. The repair would likely involve a full airbag system inspection and replacement of non-functional airbag components.

Your airbag recall was completed on 7/15/25, but the repair status was never properly recorded in Toyota's system, the dealership's system, or the DMV's system. This has created a cascade of problems: your car still appears on the recall list, you can't register it, your insurance company is questioning the status, and you've experienced additional vehicle damage during the repair process. You're caught in a loop where Toyota directs you to the dealership and the dealership takes no action. Resolving this will likely require written documentation from the dealership confirming the repair completion, submission of that documentation to Toyota corporate and the DMV, and possibly a formal complaint if records aren't updated.

Your 2005 RAV4 had only the passenger-side airbag replaced under a Takata recall, but the dealer said the driver-side (steering wheel) airbag didn't need replacing. You're unsure whether the driver-side airbag should have been replaced as part of the recall and can't find your service records to verify what was done. You should contact Toyota directly with your vehicle identification number (VIN) to confirm which airbags were included in your recall and whether the driver-side airbag still needs to be addressed.

When you back up your RAV4, you hear a clunking noise and the transmission struggles to engage reverse, especially when backing uphill. While pulling into a parking lot, your vehicle suddenly accelerated on its own and smoke appeared inside the cabin. When you applied the brakes, the vehicle continued to accelerate uncontrollably, traveling through a yard and across a road before hitting a high curb and stalling. While driving, your vehicle's VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) warning light flashes and an alarm sounds, then the car automatically applies the brakes, causing it to veer into another lane. This unexpected braking and loss of directional control could put you and other drivers at risk. The issue likely involves a malfunction in the stability control system's sensors or control module that needs diagnosis and repair.

Filed: Jan 2019

When you drive between 30-50 mph and the road curves, your VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) warning light comes on and you lose steering control until you ease off the gas pedal. This happens more frequently when accelerating uphill or around curves, and your headlights dim at the same time the warning appears. The problem started occasionally in April 2018 but now happens nearly every time you drive, forcing you to slow down significantly to regain control. The issue likely involves the VSC system, steering components, or an electrical problem affecting both the stability control and lighting system.

When you press the brake pedal while driving, your car sometimes surges forward as if you hit the gas instead of braking. This happens randomly and has occurred multiple times, including an incident where you hit a parked car. Your car's traction control system activates unexpectedly during normal driving on dry roads, even at low speeds during turns. When this happens, you hear beeping and feel the brakes engage on their own, causing the car to jerk. This has occurred both on regular roads under 30 mph and on the freeway. The issue likely involves checking the traction control system, wheel speed sensors, and brake components to identify why the system is triggering without a genuine loss of traction.
