Your 2001 Toyota Camry was hit head-on by another vehicle while you were driving at 35 mph, but the airbags failed to deploy. You suffered injuries to your left shoulder and head that needed medical treatment. The vehicle was towed away but was never inspected by a dealer or mechanic to determine why the airbags didn't work. A proper diagnostic inspection would be needed to identify the root cause of the airbag system failure.

NHTSA #: 11271515

Filed: Oct 2018

Your airbag warning light has been illuminated on your dashboard for approximately 2 months. Based on your research, it appears your airbags may not be functioning properly. You should have the airbag system diagnosed by a technician to identify and repair the underlying electrical or sensor issue.

Your airbag warning light has turned on and is staying on your dashboard. This indicates a problem with your airbag system that needs to be checked right away. A diagnostic scan will likely be needed to identify whether it's a sensor issue, wiring problem, or a faulty airbag module.

Vehicle Speed Control2 issues
criticalVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
CrashFiled: Nov 2020

When you disengaged the clutch while exiting the freeway with cruise control on, your car suddenly accelerated to full throttle instead of coasting normally. Your brakes were ineffective in slowing the acceleration, and turning off the key didn't stop the momentum, causing you to lose control and end up in a ditch. You had previously experienced cruise control malfunctions where it would turn off unexpectedly and need to be reset while driving. The issue likely involves a cruise control system malfunction or throttle control failure that caused unintended acceleration.

NHTSA #: 11373197
highVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
Filed: Jul 2025

When you apply the brakes, your car doesn't seem to slow down naturally from engine braking like it should. Instead, you have to press the brake pedal hard and keep holding it until the engine speed drops to idle. This makes braking feel less responsive than normal.

NHTSA #: 11673220
Vehicle Speed Control,engine1 issue
criticalVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
CrashFiled: Aug 2024

Your car suddenly accelerated without warning while turning into your driveway at low speed, even though you weren't pressing the gas pedal. The vehicle launched over a curb and hit a tree, causing significant damage to the front end, wheel, and suspension. This unintended acceleration may be caused by a faulty Idle Air Control Valve or an engine computer sending incorrect signals to the engine. The repair will likely involve diagnosing the idle air control system and engine computer to identify and replace the defective component.

Crash / FireFiled: Jul 2020

Your car was hit from behind by another vehicle while stopped at a junction in Oakland, California. The other driver was traveling at an uncontrollable speed, causing a collision that was serious enough to require hospital treatment. Your airbags did not deploy despite the impact. The collision damage and potential structural issues from the rear-end impact may require inspection and repair of the frame, bumper, and related components.

Vehicle Speed Control,service Brakes1 issue

CrashFiled: Dec 2019

Your accelerator became stuck while driving, causing the car to continue accelerating even when you applied the brakes. You lost control of the vehicle, drove off the road, spun out in gravel, and hit a telephone pole on the driver's side, resulting in injury. The stuck accelerator prevented normal braking and steering control.

NHTSA #: 11287565
Seat Belts1 issue
criticalSEAT BELTS
Filed: Oct 2017

All five of your seat belt buckles are not working properly and won't latch securely. Your seat belts cannot be fastened, which means they won't protect you in a crash. The buckles themselves will need to be replaced or repaired to restore proper seat belt function.

NHTSA #: 11034454
Power Train1 issue
highPOWER TRAIN
Filed: Apr 2024

While driving at 25 mph, you heard an unusual noise from the engine and your car suddenly lost power with no warning lights appearing. The vehicle stopped running but you didn't take it to a mechanic to diagnose the problem. A mechanic would need to inspect the engine to identify what caused the sudden power loss and the noise you heard.

NHTSA #: 11580895
Steering,wheels,unknown Or Other1 issue
highSTEERING,WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Nov 2023

After getting your wheels aligned, your steering wheel doesn't sit straight and your car pulls to one side of the road when you try to drive straight. When you took it back for another alignment, the pulling switched to the other side. Additionally, when parked, your steering wheel can spin a full 360 degrees and gets stuck or catches at certain points during turns. The shop will need to re-inspect and correct the wheel alignment and check for potential damage to steering components from the initial alignment work.

NHTSA #: 11554610
Electrical System,structure1 issue
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
Filed: Nov 2020

Your speed sensor melted along with its connector plug, causing the 10-amp gauge fuse to repeatedly blow. When this happens, your dashboard gauges stop working and your windows won't operate. The battery will drain if you don't address it, and the fuse blows immediately when you turn the key to the on position — even before starting the engine.

NHTSA #: 11374159
Service Brakes1 issue
highSERVICE BRAKES
Filed: Jul 2019

Your brake pedal started making loud, crunchy noises and sank almost to the floor while driving. You discovered the brake fluid was low, refilled it with DOT 3 fluid, and a mechanic diagnosed that your brake booster needs replacement. The brake booster helps reduce the effort needed to stop your car, and when it fails, braking becomes harder and noisier.

Engine1 issue
highENGINE
Filed: Aug 2018

Your engine suddenly races to high RPMs while the car is parked and in gear, both in your garage and outside. This has happened 3 times in the past year. You've been able to stop it by pressing the brake hard and turning off the engine, and it doesn't happen again when you restart. The issue may be related to idle control or fuel system components that are causing the engine to rev unexpectedly.

NHTSA #: 11121275
Suspension1 issue
highSUSPENSION
Filed: Nov 2017

Your car developed a flat tire because a coil spring in the suspension broke in half, and the sharp edge cut into the tire. You discovered the problem when you heard an unusual sound while trying to drive, and fortunately it happened at home rather than on the highway where it could have been dangerous. The fix involved replacing all the struts and shocks on the suspension system.

NHTSA #: 11051256
Unknown Or Other1 issue
mediumUNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Oct 2018

Your car's door latches are getting stuck in the closed position. The plastic surrounding the latch mechanism appears to be the culprit. You may have difficulty opening one or more doors. The fix will likely involve inspecting and replacing the plastic latch components or the entire door latch assembly.

This complaint is primarily about DMV record-keeping and vehicle title documentation issues, not a mechanical problem with the vehicle itself. The owner reports difficulty getting the DMV to correct ownership records for their 2001 Toyota Camry that they purchased in cash. While the complaint mentions airbags, brakes, and structure as components, no specific mechanical defects or failures are described.

Your car's year of manufacture was identified as 2000 instead of 2001 during a local DMV inspection, based on stickers found on the doors, hood, and other locations. This discrepancy was noted during the inspection process. You may need to contact Toyota or your local DMV to clarify your vehicle's actual model year.
