Component: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:FLOOR SHIFT
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2001-2008 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles manufactured March 31, 2001, to September 1, 2009. The affected vehicles are equipped with either a 2.3L or 3.0L engine and have had their CD4E transmission replaced with remanufactured one that was rebuilt between June 11, 2015 through July 15, 2015. These service repair part transmissions have a shift lever bolt that may not be properly tightened. As a result, the shift control lever could disengage from the transmission without warning.
Risk: If the shift lever disengages from the transmission, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. Should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the gear selection indicator may show that the transmission is in the "PARK" position, but the vehicle transmission may not actually be in the "PARK" gear position. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the transmissions and either tighten the manual shift lever bolt or replace the manual shift lever assembly. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 23, 2015. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S28.
NHTSA Campaign: 15E045000
Component: SUSPENSION:FRONT:WHEEL BEARING
The Timken Company (Timken) is recalling certain aftermarket front wheel bearings, part number 510072, sold from January 22, 2015, to May 21, 2015, to be used as service parts on 2001-2012 Ford Escape, 2001-2011 Mazda Tribute, and 2005-2011 Mercury Mariner vehicles. The affected wheel bearings have incorrect dimensions of a 42mm bore, 76mm outer dimension, and 39mm width, instead of a 42mm bore, 78mm outer dimension and a 45mm width.
Risk: Use of an incorrectly sized wheel bearing can adversely affect the braking and steering of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Timken has begun notifying distributors who will offer purchasers replacement wheel bearings, free of charge. The recall began on May 21, 2015. Owners may contact Timken customer service at 1-866-984-6536.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2001-2004 Escape vehicles manufactured October 22, 1999, through January 23, 2004, originally sold, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. These vehicles may experience excessive corrosion at the forward attachment of the lower control arm.
Risk: A separation of the lower control arm can result in a significant loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install a newly designed reinforcement cross-brace, free of charge. The recall began on May 30, 2014. Owners may contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S02.

Component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Ford Motor Company is recalling certain model year 2001 through 2004 Escape vehicles equipped with 3.0L V6 engines and speed control manufactured from October 22, 1999, through January 23, 2004. Inadequate clearance between the engine cover and the speed control cable connector could result in a stuck throttle when the accelerator pedal is fully or almost-fully depressed. This risk exists regardless of whether or not speed control (cruise control) is used.
Risk: A stuck throttle may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop or slow the vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death.
Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles by increasing the engine cover clearance, free of charge. The safety recall began August 3, 2012. Remedy parts are expected to be available in mid-August 2012. Until then dealers will disconnect the speed control cable as an interim remedy, if parts are not available at the time of an owner's service appointment. Owners may contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.

Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 1051)
Suspension,structure →3 issues
Your car's frame has developed significant rust damage, with some areas rusted completely through and metal flaking off. Your mechanic indicates this is expensive to repair and that the car isn't safe to drive in its current condition. While similar frame issues have been recalled on other Escapes, your vehicle wasn't included in those recalls. Fixing this will likely require professional frame repair or replacement work.

When you try to accelerate from a stop, your vehicle pulls to the right even though you're turning the steering wheel to the left. A mechanic found that corrosion on the subframe is allowing the passenger side control arm to move forward while driving, causing this steering and pulling issue. The subframe will likely need to be replaced or repaired to restore proper suspension alignment and steering control.

Engine →2 issues
Your Escape has trouble shifting into 1st and 2nd gear—the engine runs hard and makes a ticking noise until you get past 3rd gear, when it runs normally. The transmission also shifts harshly with clunking sounds. More seriously, your car won't stay in Park and rolls even when parked, forcing you to use a brick to keep it stationary. You received a recall letter about this issue but lost it, and the transmission and parking brake system need professional inspection and repair.

While driving at 60 mph on the highway, your car began shaking severely and making loud noise. You discovered the ignition coil had come loose and a spark plug was missing from the engine. After a mechanic installed a new spark plug, the car ran fine for 5 weeks, then the same problem occurred again — the spark plug blew out of the engine a second time. Now the spark plug won't reinstall properly, and the engine smells like gasoline and makes noise like the muffler is loose. The repair will likely require replacing the spark plug and investigating why it keeps ejecting from the cylinder head, possibly involving cylinder head thread repair or replacement.

Suspension →2 issues
Your mechanic discovered that a suspension part on your vehicle — which was previously fixed under a recall that added a bracket — is now heavily rusted at only 90,000 miles. You're concerned that the bracket may have been a cost-cutting repair rather than a complete fix, and worry that other owners might think the recall fully solved the problem when the underlying issue could still develop. The repair will likely involve replacing the rusted suspension component or assessing whether the bracket-based fix is still adequate.

You received a recall notice for your 2001 Ford Escape's suspension system, but the repair parts weren't available for an extended period. When you contacted the dealership, they refused to do the repair because the cost exceeded your vehicle's value. The manufacturer didn't provide assistance despite being notified. The dealership may need to order suspension components and perform alignment or component replacement work.

Steering,wheels,unknown Or Other →1 issue
While driving on ice at 20 mph on North Leland Street in San Pedro, your Ford Escape suddenly pulled to the side, causing a crash. You believe this may have been a mechanical issue rather than a loss of traction on the ice, though you're unsure what specifically caused the vehicle to veer. A police report was filed. A mechanic would need to inspect the steering system, suspension, and wheel alignment to determine the cause.

Steering, suspension, electronic Stability Control (esc) →1 issue
Your car won't shift into Park properly and won't stay parked — you've had to put a brick in front of it to keep it from rolling. Your emergency brake isn't working either. You received a recall letter about these issues but lost it and need another copy to get the car repaired. The fix will likely involve servicing or replacing the parking brake system and transmission shift linkage components.
Parts you may need:

Vehicle Speed Control →1 issue
Your gas pedal is sticking while you're driving, especially in cold weather, which makes it difficult to slow down or stop even after the engine warms up. This has happened multiple times, including on the highway, causing your vehicle to keep accelerating forward even after you've tried to control it. The issue may require inspection and cleaning or replacement of the throttle cable, pedal linkage, or related components.
Parts you may need:
As an Amazon Associate, MyCarTSB earns from qualifying purchases.
Structure →1 issue
Your vehicle's subframe is severely rusting, which is causing structural integrity concerns and makes the vehicle unsafe to drive. The subframe is a critical structural component that supports major parts of your vehicle, and rust damage compromises its strength. This issue will likely require replacing the entire subframe to restore safety.
Parts you may need:
As an Amazon Associate, MyCarTSB earns from qualifying purchases.
Service Brakes →1 issue
Your brake pedal suddenly dropped to the floor with no resistance when you tried to shift into drive, even though the brakes had worked fine minutes earlier. You were able to drive home slowly, but the brakes only worked when the pedal was pressed all the way down. This suggests a possible brake fluid leak or internal brake system failure that should be inspected immediately.

As an Amazon Associate, MyCarTSB earns from qualifying purchases.
Vehicle Speed Control, unknown Or Other, forward Collision Avoidance →1 issue
When you tried to accelerate onto the highway, your car wouldn't go faster than 60 mph and then shifted down and stalled. When you release the gas pedal, the car doesn't slow down on its own, and it's backfiring. This suggests problems with acceleration control, transmission shifting, and engine combustion.
Parts you may need:
As an Amazon Associate, MyCarTSB earns from qualifying purchases.
Unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your torque converter clutch solenoid failed while you were driving at 60 mph, causing your car to slow down unexpectedly. This component controls transmission fluid flow and helps your transmission shift smoothly. The solenoid will need to be replaced or repaired to restore normal transmission function.
Parts you may need:
As an Amazon Associate, MyCarTSB earns from qualifying purchases.
Power Train,electrical System,engine →1 issue
Your car keeps shutting off while you're driving, even after replacing the battery, oxygen sensor, and alternator. This is a serious drivability issue that needs immediate diagnosis since multiple electrical and engine components have already been replaced without solving the problem. A mechanic will need to test the electrical system and engine controls to find what's causing the stalling.
Parts you may need:
As an Amazon Associate, MyCarTSB earns from qualifying purchases.
Wheels →1 issue
While driving 80 mph on I-95 South near Miami, your left front tire suddenly blew out and split in half. You were able to stop safely without causing an accident, but the tire failure happened shortly after a routine tire rotation and air pressure check. The blowout may have caused damage to your wheel, suspension, or other components that should be inspected.
