Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A THREE-SPOKE STYLE STEERING WHEEL. DURING AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE BOTTOM SEAM OF THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG MODULE COVER (HORN PAD) COULD BE TORN AWAY ALLOWING THE BOTTOM PORTION OF THE COVER TO COMPLETELY DETACH FROM THE AIR BAG MODULE.

Risk: IF THIS SHOULD OCCUR, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE DETACHED BOTTOM PORTION MAY STRIKE THE DRIVER CAUSING PERSONAL INJURY.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG MODULE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN DECEMBER 28, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331 OR LEXUS AT 1-888-333-9376.

ON CERTAIN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH CURTAIN SHIELD AIR BAGS (CSA), ONE OR BOTH OF THE CURTAIN AIR BAGS MAY BE TWISTED NEAR THE INFLATOR DUE TO IMPROPER ASSEMBLY.

Risk: IF THIS OCCURS, THE CSA MAY NOT DEPLOY RAPIDLY ENOUGH WHEN ACTIVATED IN A SIDE IMPACT COLLISION. THIS MAY RESULT IN FAILURE TO PROVIDE THE INTENDED HEAD PROTECTION, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY.

Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE CSAS AND REPLACE THE AIR BAG ASSEMBLY IF NECESSARY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 6, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

Your 2002 Toyota Camry may have a factory defect where the rear head studs strip out and loosen, causing the head gasket to fail and coolant to leak. Your temperature gauge will spike quickly when you try to drive. Fixing this requires a complete engine replacement, which costs $8,000–$15,000 depending on whether you use a new, rebuilt, or used engine with professional installation.

Your mechanic indicates this is a common problem on 2002-2003 Camrys and will cost around $2,200 to repair, including a new radiator and thermostat. Fixing this issue typically involves removing the cylinder head, replacing the stripped bolts, and installing new gaskets and cooling system components.

The electrical switch inside your passenger side door caught fire without warning while you were driving. Smoke appeared first, followed by flames that melted the door and shattered the window. While you were able to partially extinguish the fire with water, emergency services had to respond, and the door suffered severe damage. This repair will likely require complete replacement of the door's electrical switch assembly and possibly the entire door panel.

You discovered that your 2002 Toyota Camry's odometer reading doesn't match the mileage listed on the vehicle's title. When you purchased the car, the odometer showed 127,000 miles, but the title indicated 283,000 miles—a significant difference suggesting the odometer may have been tampered with or rolled back. This is a case of odometer fraud, which affects the vehicle's actual wear and value. Resolving this will likely require working with your state's motor vehicle department and potentially pursuing legal action against the seller.
