NHTSA Campaign: 15V032000

Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2008-2013 Nissan Rogue vehicles manufactured March 7, 2007, to November 26, 2013, and 2014 Nissan Rogue Select vehicles manufactured September 23, 2013, to July 2, 2014. The affected vehicles may experience an electrical short in the harness connector due to a mixture of snow/water and salt seeping through the carpet on the driver side floor near the harness connector.

Risk: An electrical short can cause a vehicle fire.

Fix: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the kick panel wiring harness connector and will if necessary install a new harness connector and waterproof seal, free of charge. The recall began on February 26, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

Your Nissan Rogue's transmission lost power while you were driving on the highway, causing your speed to drop from 70 mph to 50 mph without warning. A few minutes later, your car struggled to accelerate through a stop sign while turning left, creating a dangerous situation with oncoming traffic. Your mechanic found a transmission failure code and confirmed this is a known issue with Nissan Rogues equipped with CVT transmissions. The fix will likely require transmission repair or replacement by a qualified mechanic.

Your transmission has failed and is no longer functioning. This is a serious mechanical issue that will prevent your car from operating safely. The transmission will likely need to be rebuilt or replaced entirely.

NHTSA #: 11526690

Filed: Sep 2022

Your CVT transmission fluid overheats during extended highway driving, triggering an engine code (P0744) that forces your car into a limp-home mode capped at 25 mph. This has happened repeatedly in various conditions, creating a safety hazard on freeways where slower traffic increases rear-end collision risk. The issue appears to be insufficient transmission cooling in this model year, as later Nissans received an upgraded CVT fluid cooler. Fixing this may require installing an aftermarket transmission cooler, servicing the CVT fluid system, or potentially rebuilding the transmission itself.

While driving on a main road, your car jerked violently when accelerating, made a bang and click noise, then lost the ability to accelerate—leaving it unable to move safely. When put in park, the car began rolling, requiring seven people to push it to a parking lot. A mechanic indicated the CVT transmission is the likely cause, following earlier incidents two weeks prior where the car hesitated and jerked at a stop sign. Fixing this will likely require CVT transmission repair or replacement.

Your 2010 Nissan Rogue's continuously variable transmission (CVT) has lost power three separate times after driving long distances in hot weather while climbing steep hills, causing your speed to drop from 70 mph to around 40 mph. This issue happened twice on interstate highways and once on a California state highway. A fix would likely involve having a Nissan dealer inspect and potentially service or replace the CVT transmission.

Filed: Sep 2024

Your driver and passenger side curtain airbags deployed suddenly while your husband was sitting in the driver's seat wiping the center console, even though the car wasn't in a crash and all doors were closed. The airbag deployment caused him to suffer ear injuries and emotional distress, though no medical treatment was required. The airbags may need to be replaced and the airbag system may need to be inspected to find out why they deployed without warning.

NHTSA #: 11612641

CrashFiled: Apr 2023

Your vehicle was involved in a severe three-time rollover crash where it flipped and slid across the road. While most airbags deployed (curtain airbags and seat airbags), the steering wheel airbag and passenger dashboard airbag did not deploy despite the severity of the collision. You're requesting an investigation into why these two critical airbags failed to activate.

NHTSA #: 11516835
criticalAIR BAGS
Filed: Oct 2022

Your passenger side airbags deployed unexpectedly without any accident or impact. Both the airbags and the front passenger seat were affected by this unintended deployment. This requires immediate inspection to determine why the airbag system activated on its own. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the airbag control module and sensor system, then replacing any faulty components.

Filed: Jun 2023

Your passenger-side airbag warning light stays on continuously, appearing both on the dashboard and behind the gear shift. This indicates your vehicle's airbag system may not be functioning properly. A mechanic will need to scan the airbag system with diagnostic equipment to identify the underlying fault.

Filed: Aug 2022

Your airbag warning light is flashing and won't turn off even after trying the recommended solution. A diagnostic scan showed that your passenger seat airbag has a defective part, and the dealership quoted over $2,000 to repair it. While there was a recall for this problem, your 2010 model year wasn't included, leaving you without that coverage. This is a safety concern because your passenger side airbag may not deploy properly in a crash.

Filed: Sep 2022

Your passenger side airbag warning light stays on constantly, even when an adult is sitting in the seat. You believe the weight sensor in the seat that detects occupancy is broken, since the light should turn off when someone is present. This has been happening for over a year. The fix will likely involve diagnosing and replacing the passenger seat weight sensor or the airbag control module.

FireFiled: Mar 2025

Your husband smelled an electrical fire when trying to start the vehicle one morning and found the driver's side door locked with the key fob not working. When he entered through the passenger side, he discovered the interior filled with heavy smoke and the left side of the dashboard, fuse box, hood latch, door, floor mat, carpet, and headliner were severely burned and melted, with heat from the fire even shattering the windshield. The vehicle had been driven the day before with no warning signs and was parked overnight in the driveway. This electrical fire appears to have started on its own while the vehicle was parked and unattended.

Your car caught fire under the hood while parked at a drive-thru, about 10 miles after refueling at a gas station. There were no warning signs, noises, or warning lights before the fire started—the engine was running normally. The fire department will need to investigate the electrical system and fuel system components to determine what caused the ignition.

Filed: Dec 2023

Your car made a loud creaking noise while in park at a drive-thru, then wouldn't move when shifted into drive. A mechanic identified a CV belt issue connected to the transmission, but diagnostic testing later revealed a damaged axle that the dealer says may have been caused by an accident. Your car also has a persistent check engine light due to the catalytic converter and the air conditioning and heating stopped working.

Your engine light came on the day after purchase, accompanied by a strong exhaust odor that was not present during the test drive. The dealer initially assured you the vehicle was in good condition and recently inspected, but later claimed it was sold as-is and suggested you buy a fuel system flush to fix the problem. The underlying issue causing the check engine light and exhaust odor may require professional diagnosis to identify whether it's a fuel system problem, emissions issue, or engine malfunction.

Your car loses engine power when driving at high elevation, even with the gas pedal pressed to the floor. This happened to you while climbing a mountain pass, limiting your speed to 35 mph in a 60 mph zone and forcing you into the shoulder. The problem appears to be related to heat or elevation conditions. This issue may require diagnostic testing of the fuel system, ignition system, or engine control computer to identify and correct the underlying cause.
