NHTSA Campaign: 13V113000

Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.

Risk: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

NHTSA Campaign: 13V354000

Component: SUSPENSION:REAR

Hyundai is recalling certain model year 2006-2010 Sonata vehicles manufactured March 1, 2005, through January 21, 2010; and model year 2006-2011 Azera vehicles manufactured September 27, 2005, through November 22, 2010 originally sold in, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Road salt and water can enter portions of the rear crossmember, leading to corrosion of the crossmember steel. This may lead to detachment of one of the rear control arms.

Risk: Control arm separation may suddenly change the rear wheel alignment, affecting the handling of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will repair or replace the crossmember assembly. The recall began on October 8, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai Customer Care Center at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall number is 113.

While driving at highway speeds, you heard a loud pop from underneath your car, followed by heavy steam and oil leaking from the engine. The rod bearing failed and punched a hole through the engine block, causing total engine failure with no warning signs beforehand. You had to navigate through traffic to reach the shoulder safely, and were concerned about potential fire. Fixing this will require a complete engine replacement.

After your Hyundai dealership completed two recalls (lamp light switch and crossmember repair), your car developed new problems: the ESC (electronic stability control) warning light came on and your car shakes while driving. These issues didn't exist before the recall work was done. The dealership has refused to fix the problems they caused. The repair work will likely involve diagnosing and correcting the ESC system and suspension components that were affected during the recall repairs.

CrashFiled: Jun 2021

Your Hyundai was hit on the right front passenger side by a motorcycle, causing severe damage to the right side of the vehicle. Despite the vehicle being equipped with side airbags and curtain airbags, none of these safety features deployed during the crash, even though the right passenger window shattered completely and a passenger in the back seat suffered a serious head injury. The lack of airbag deployment during this high-impact collision suggests a potential failure in the vehicle's safety system.

Your door handles have been falling off repeatedly over the past couple of months. While this hasn't caused a crash or fire, you're concerned about the safety implications since the handles shouldn't be detaching on their own. The fix will likely involve inspecting the handle attachment points and replacing the faulty door handle assemblies or their mounting hardware.

Your ignition key won't turn in the ignition switch, and your steering wheel locks up when you try to start the car. A mechanic replaced the ignition switch, but the vehicle still won't start because another part that's no longer available from the manufacturer also needs replacement. This means the vehicle cannot be repaired through normal channels.

FireFiled: Dec 2025

Your 2010 Hyundai Sonata caught fire in the engine compartment on December 19, 2025, without any collision involved. The fire may have been caused by an engine bearing failure that punctured the engine block and ignited oil, or by an electrical short in the ABS module. The repair will likely require a complete engine inspection and replacement of failed components.

Your 2010 Sonata has had a persistent check engine light for over 3 years that multiple mechanics, including the Hyundai dealership, cannot diagnose. You've replaced the water pump, belts twice, and thermostat three times within 2 years, but the problem continues. Recently, your car has stalled unexpectedly (twice in one day on the highway and city streets) and the steering wheel locked up during these incidents, creating a serious safety hazard. The dashboard fuel and temperature gauges are also erratic, and your cruise control doesn't work. A proper diagnostic scan and electrical system evaluation may be needed to identify the root cause of these recurring fault codes.

Your 2010 Sonata's engine failed due to excessive oil consumption, a known issue with Hyundai engines made at the Alabama factory. Before the failure, your check engine light came on between oil changes and the engine hesitated and jerked while driving, then eventually stopped running completely. The engine will need to be replaced, and you're disputing whether this should be covered under warranty given the mileage.

Filed: May 2023

Your 2010 Sonata was supposed to have a stop lamp switch replaced under a safety recall to prevent shifting out of Park without pressing the brake pedal. Even after the dealer claimed to install the replacement part, your vehicle still shifts out of Park without braking in any key position or with no key at all. Hyundai has refused to fix this remaining safety issue, claiming the car is too old and out of warranty. This repair will likely require diagnosis and replacement of the brake interlock system components to restore the safety feature that prevents unintended gear shifts.

Filed: Nov 2023

Your brake light housings are turning black and deteriorating from heat exposure, and you've had to replace them multiple times. Additionally, your ground wire to the radiator fan burned out, your dashboard has cracked extensively, and your brake light switch has failed repeatedly. Your car experienced a serious electrical failure while driving on the highway where all lights came on, the engine shut off, and your headlights dimmed, which could have caused a crash. The repair likely involves replacing the brake light housings with heat-resistant versions, repairing or replacing the alternator and electrical ground connections, and replacing the brake light switch with a more durable component.
