NHTSA Campaign: 15V046000

Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2002-2003 Jeep Liberty vehicles manufactured January 9, 2001, to March 28, 2003, 2002-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 13, 2001, to May 23 2003, and 2003-2004 Dodge Viper vehicles manufactured November 1, 2001, to June 30, 2004. Due to electrical noise beyond the tolerance of the air bag electronic control module (ECM), a component in the ECM may fail, causing the front air bags, side air bags, and/or seatbelt pretensioners to deploy inadvertently while the vehicle is being operated.

Risk: Inadvertent deployment of the air bags may increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash.

Fix: Chrysler dealers will replace the air bag control module and side impact sensors as required, free of charge. This recall remedy was applied during earlier recall campaigns of these vehicles under safety recalls 12V527 and 13V040. All owners that have not had the recall repair performed under safety recalls 12V527 or 13V040 are strongly encouraged to have it performed and not wait for the final remedy to be deployed to the field. The recall began on December 29, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R06.

NHTSA Campaign: 12V527000

Component: AIR BAGS

Chrysler is recalling certain model year 2002 and 2003 Jeep Liberty vehicles manufactured January 9, 2001, through March 28, 2003, and 2002 through 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 13, 2001, through May 23, 2003. A component in the air bag control module may fail causing the front airbags, side curtain airbags, and/or seatbelt pretensioners to deploy inadvertently while the vehicle is being operated.

Risk: Inadvertent deployment of the airbags may increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash.

Fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will install a supplemental jumper harness to the airbag control module, free of charge. Owners were notified of the recall by interim letter in January 2013. The remedy for affected Liberty vehicles is expected to be available in April 2013. The remedy for affected Grand Cherokee vehicles is expected to be available later in the year. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753.

Your airbag system has a safety recall (R06) that needs to be completed, but Jeep dealers are unable to obtain the necessary parts, including the ORC module, due to nationwide backorders. Your airbag warning light is on, indicating the recall work cannot be done until parts become available. Getting this recall completed will require replacing the ORC module and related airbag system components once they're back in stock.

NHTSA #: 11679986

Filed: Feb 2023

Your front passenger-side airbag deployed suddenly while you were driving at 40 mph, even though there was no accident or impact. This happened without any warning, and you were able to drive the vehicle home afterward. The airbag system will likely need to be inspected to determine why it deployed unexpectedly and to ensure it's safe to use.

NHTSA #: 11506020
criticalAIR BAGS
Filed: Jan 2023

Your airbags deployed unexpectedly on both the driver and passenger sides while you were driving, with no warning signs beforehand. This created a safety risk and caused damage to your vehicle. The repair will likely involve inspecting the airbag control module and sensors to determine why they fired, then replacing the deployed airbag units.

NHTSA #: 11501790

Filed: Jan 2023

Your airbag module isn't working, and the dealer has had the replacement part on backorder for months without being able to repair it. This is preventing you from getting your vehicle inspected until the airbag system is fixed. Resolving this will require the dealer to obtain the airbag module and install it once it becomes available.

NHTSA #: 11500707

Filed: Mar 2022

Your airbag warning light remained on after the dealership completed a safety recall repair. The dealership incorrectly replaced the front impact sensors when the recall instructions specifically required replacing the side impact sensors instead, leaving your airbags in a faulty state. After weeks of back-and-forth with the dealership and FCA customer care, they finally performed the correct repair and your airbags functioned properly. This repair will likely require proper diagnostic testing and replacement of the correct impact sensors per NHTSA recall specifications.

Your airbags deployed unexpectedly while you were slowly parking your car at home, with no collision occurring. The airbag warning light came on suddenly just before the bags inflated, and your family was frightened by this unintended deployment. The problem likely involves a faulty airbag sensor or control module that needs to be diagnosed and replaced by a technician.

Your air bag warning light is on, and there's a recall affecting your vehicle's air bag system. You took your Jeep to the dealer, but they couldn't reproduce the problem or complete any repairs because the replacement part wasn't available. The dealer told you multiple times that the part is still on backorder, and you're waiting to hear back from Jeep about when it will be available.

Your airbag warning light has been on since you purchased your 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. There's an active recall (Campaign 15V046000) to fix the airbag system, but the dealer told you the replacement part isn't available yet. You've been waiting longer than seems reasonable for this recall repair to be completed. Your 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee was subject to an airbag recall before you purchased it in March 2012. You've taken it to two different dealers multiple times, most recently in August 2020, but neither dealer has completed the repair because they say the part is not in stock. Your airbag warning light comes on when you start the car, but usually goes away if you turn it off and restart—though not every time. This is frustrating because your vehicle has already been recalled twice for airbag problems, and you suspect this is the same issue recurring. A mechanic will need to scan the airbag system's diagnostic codes to identify what's triggering the warning light.

Your 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee was included in a safety recall for airbags, but the dealership told you that replacement parts aren't currently available. Chrysler wasn't able to tell you when these parts would be back in stock, leaving your recall repair on hold. This means your airbags haven't been updated as part of the recall yet. Getting the airbag system updated will require waiting for parts to arrive and then having a technician install them.

criticalSTEERING,SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Jun 2023

Your Jeep has multiple serious issues affecting safety and drivability. The steering linkage is failing and making noises, the emergency brake doesn't work, the airbag and seatbelt warning lights stay on, the gas pedal sticks, power steering fluid is leaking heavily, and the front shocks are worn causing clunking sounds over bumps. You'll also notice the back passenger taillight is out, cruise control won't engage, the oil pressure gauge reads high, and steering has been poor overall. These problems will require comprehensive inspection and repair of the steering system, suspension components, brake system, electrical connections, and fluid leaks.

During an emergency situation on the highway, your brakes failed to stop the vehicle even when pressed hard, and the car continued accelerating uncontrollably. After the crash, you discovered the ignition key had fallen out while the engine was still running, which the dealer confirmed can happen as keys wear down over time. The brake failure and key ejection issue should be inspected by a qualified mechanic to determine if the ignition switch or brake system components need replacement.

Your turn signals and brake lights may randomly stop working while you're driving, then start working again on other days — creating a serious safety risk since other drivers won't see your signals from behind. Additionally, your windows may suddenly roll down by themselves while you're driving. These electrical problems have been temporarily fixed by mechanics but keep returning, making it unsafe to drive in heavy traffic.

Fuel/propulsion System1 issue

Filed: Nov 2019

Your 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee may have an exposed fuel tank based on a manufacturer safety notification (N47). The dealer says your vehicle was inspected and deemed safe, but you have no record of this inspection happening. You're concerned the exposed fuel tank could be a fire hazard, though you haven't experienced any actual problems yet. The fix would likely involve having the fuel tank properly secured or protected by the dealer during an inspection.
