NHTSA Campaign: 23V384000

Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/PANEL

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Corolla Cross vehicles. The instrument panel may have been produced without the required perforation, which could result in the front-passenger air bag not deploying properly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safey Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

Risk: An air bag that does not deploy as intended increases the risk of injury during a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the instrument panel, if necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 10, 2023. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 23TB04/23TA04.

You were involved in a major accident that totaled your vehicle, but none of the airbags deployed during the crash. You're concerned about safety and want to know what action can be taken regarding this airbag failure and who will be held responsible. The repair would likely involve a complete airbag system inspection and replacement of the airbag modules and sensors.

Your 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross was struck on the driver's side during a major collision, but the airbags failed to deploy despite heavy vehicle damage. You were wearing your seatbelt but sustained injuries including neck pain, middle back pain, and lightheadedness. The airbag system has not yet been inspected by Toyota, though police and insurance documented the crash. A full investigation of the airbag sensor and deployment mechanism will be needed to determine why the system did not activate.

Your car was struck from behind at high speed on the highway, causing severe damage to the rear bumper and exhaust system. Despite the force of the impact, your airbags did not deploy, and you received no warning lights or alerts before or after the crash. Tow personnel indicated that based on the crash severity and location, the airbags should have activated, creating a potential safety risk. A dealer inspection of your airbag system and crash sensors may be needed to determine why the system failed to deploy.

Your taillights may not be visible enough to drivers behind you at night, especially in bad weather. You were nearly hit from behind because the person following you couldn't see your lights clearly—they're only visible from the side rather than straight back. The fix would likely involve replacing the taillight assemblies with brighter or better-positioned units, or checking that existing lights are functioning at full brightness.

Your car's driver's side headlight isn't producing enough light when driving at night, making it difficult to see the road ahead. The dealership replaced the headlight assembly, but the problem came back. This is a safety concern since you need proper headlight illumination for nighttime driving.

Your LED headlights on low beam are creating dark spots on the road ahead, which is very distracting and takes your focus away from the road. This is especially dangerous when driving on winding rural roads at night where there are deer. The issue appears to be with how the low beam light is distributed or aimed.

Your engine shuts off when you stop at a red light during rain, and you have to wait about 10 minutes before you can restart it. This is a dangerous problem that affects drivability and could leave you stranded in traffic. The issue may involve moisture getting into electrical connections or a faulty engine control sensor that needs diagnosis and repair.

Your Corolla Cross randomly stalls or shuts down while braking, at red lights, or while slowing down—especially on rainy days. When this happens, a dashboard warning appears indicating a system is unavailable, and you have to restart the engine to get moving again, which can be slow. This creates a safety hazard since other drivers may rear-end you when your vehicle suddenly stops. The dealer previously inspected it but found no problem and provided no documentation of their findings.

Your dashboard warning lights remain illuminated even after your dealer installed a new computer and replaced multiple components including switches, hoses, valves, and fuel injectors. Most concerning, your dashboard went completely blank while driving on the highway, causing your vehicle to lose power and the transmission to fail to shift gears — a serious safety issue that forced you to pull over. The dealer has been unable to identify the root cause despite multiple repair attempts and repeated battery resets. This may require comprehensive electrical system diagnosis, computer reprogramming, or replacement of additional engine control modules and fuel injection components.

Your vehicle lost electrical power and power steering while driving on the freeway, triggering warning messages about battery charging failure, AWD system malfunction, and low steering power. The car shut down completely, making it difficult to steer and pull over safely at highway speeds. Even after the dealership replaced the battery, the same problem happened again the next day.

While driving at a moderate speed (june 7, 2025), multiple critical systems of the vehicle suddenly failed. Both dashboard screens (driver and center display) went black, and numerous warning lights appeared afterward, including oil pressure, engine, lane departure, tire pressure, and airbag (SRS) system malfunction.

Your 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid displayed a 'power brake loss' warning when you tried to start it, and the battery completely drained after a few minutes, leaving you stranded. The towing technician indicated that your vehicle came equipped with a battery below Toyota's recommended specifications for hybrid vehicles, which may not provide stable voltage needed for hybrid and regenerative braking systems. Since your brakes rely on electrical power, using an undersized battery could create electrical problems and safety risks. Replacing the battery with a proper AGM or high-performance battery that meets Toyota's specifications should resolve the issue.

Your Corolla Cross is displaying warning messages that say "System Malfunction - Contact Dealer" and "Secondary Collision Brake System Malfunction" while you're driving, even though the messages don't appear when you start the vehicle. Your dealer cleared the error codes, but the messages returned shortly after you drove the car home. This suggests an intermittent problem with your forward collision avoidance system that needs further diagnosis.

While driving at 68 MPH, your sunroof suddenly exploded with a loud gunshot-like sound, creating a large hole in the glass. A big piece of glass landed behind your right ear, and air rushed into the vehicle — you had to pull over at a rest stop to clean it out. The glass had multiple hairline cracks and fractures, which you believe happened due to pressure buildup from extended high-speed driving.

While stopped at a red light, your car made a loud beeping noise and displayed a "Low power steering" warning before going into limp mode and shutting off. You were able to restart the car and it worked normally afterward, with no warning lights showing. The dealer found an OBD code related to the mass airflow sensor but couldn't recreate the problem and didn't repair anything. The issue may involve the power steering system or the mass airflow sensor needing diagnostic attention or replacement.
