2016 Jeep Cherokee Electrical Problems

Parking brake module and connector got major water damage. My mechanic found over four gallons of water under my spare tire compartment. After inspecting it he found the module and wires fried.

The power liftgate stopped working. This is the exact issue described in the 23V-338 / 49A Recall. The year, make, and model of my car are the same as detailed in the recall, but this specific VIN is not included.

Let's start with my vehicle was first in the shop back in February for a failed brake line. Some how it failed. Then my thermoset unit failed.

Went out to the vehicle in the morning, inserted the key in the ignition, turned the key to start the vehicle and the battery exploded.

Known service bulletin by Jeep. Service bulletin number 08-060-16. The parking brake module wiring harness connection can get terminal corrosion through faulty seals in the Jeep aka “water intrusion”.

*SERVICE SHIFTER POP UP* I've had my 2016 Jeep Cherokee for about 4 years and every few months it pops up with SERVICE SHIFTER on my dash and the shifter lights up. I have talked to my local Jeep dealership, where I purchased this vehicle, and they brushed it off. After reading forums, this can be a HUGE safety hazard and could cause an accident or even worse, kill somebody!!

On numerous occasions, my 2016 jeep cherokee shut down mid turn or while driving. On many turns, it dies as I complete the turn. I am writing this complaint because on my way to work, my jeep's engine shut off in the middle of the turn on a city street in morning traffic.

As I was driving on the highway out of no where my jeep begun to stall and all the lights shut off and lost power, I almost was involved in an accident due to loss of control of the vehicle this is the 3 time it happens in 2 days it runs fine and out of no where this problem happens.

Service shifter light came on. I had it fixed before. Light came back on within 3 months after getting it fixed.

Over the course of a year, my battery has died (oct), my harsh cold start needed replacement (nov), my radio completely died and could not be updated (dec) and recently within the past two months and by far the most concerning is that my jeep will completely shut off while sitting at a red light or stopping for only a minute. This is not sue ro low oil or anything of my own doing.

The service shifter light keeps coming on. With that..the lights next to the park, drive, neutral and drive letters all turn red. I'm taking it to a dealership this saturday and I know that it will cost me.

Three days after buying this jeep cherokee limited I was sitting in my driveway with the car in park running when I started to smell something burning, the cabin filled with smoke to the point that I called 911 and dispatched my local fire department, they could not determine the location of the smoke, I was able to drive it to the dealership with all windows down in 18 degree weather, the dealer found "burn marks" on the cabin air filter and all they did was to remove the cabin air filter and that was it?

My vehicle jeep was in motion on the interstate when my service transmission light came on and I almost caused a major accident when my jeep slowed way down. When I accelerated it would hardly move. Mind you I was on the interstate!!

My jeep keeps breaking down while the vehicle is in motion and I have almost been in several wrecks because of it. I have now done my own research on this issue going on with cars that have my same year make and model and have been experience the same exact issues as I am all over the us.

Each time I have been driving the vehicle when the brakes failed without warning the last time (4th time) my car was in the shop because the tranmission seal had a leak. While the mechanic was test driving the car the brakes failed with him. When I have had been driving the jeep and the brakes failed I was pulling into different locations and the brakes would fail and not stop the car.

While at a stop light, my jeep completely shut off on me and we had to start it back up and it started back up. However this has happened many times before and think they should recall this considering how many of the same complaints I am seeing on this. I have 2 kids in my car at all times and fear it doing this while driving as well.

As of lately, the speedometer toogles up & down through a set of numbers even after attempts are made to reduce speed especially when on cruise control. During cruise control vehicle accelerates beyond set limit & requires extreme force to decelerate. It happens randomly as does many dangerous issues mainly after a software update takes place with the vehicle.

Uconnect system key fob with remote start capability is able to start the vehicle accidentally if the fob start button is depressed in a pocket. In the instance in question, vehicle was parked in home garage, fob was in pocket of owner inside the home. Owner walked into garage to find vehicle was running.

Vehicle had run unattended in enclosed garage. Vehicle consumed all fuel in gas tank (about 14 gallons) resulting in excessive heat build up in garage that items in garage melted. Parts on the vehicle melted.

Went to go to the grocery store and the Electronic Park Brake was engaged. Had it reset, went to the grocery store and it was re-engaged. Had it towed to dealer, upon diagnosis, corrosion was found at EPB module and connector pin.

Vehicle lost power while in traffic was running weird jerking check engine light came on A! Light came on vehicle wouldn't stay running. Codes read Catalyst system efficiency.

In early 2022 the vehicle just shutoff while I was actively driving. I couldnt get the car to neutral once it shut off and had to be towed. Boosting did not immediately resolve the issue.

Code P2504 and code P063A. Received these codes when I already have a new battery and car is only at 70k miles. Caused the vehicle to go in to lower saving mode in to a turn and almost hit other vehicles.

After making a left turn and giving it gas to get up the road the car suddenly stalled and had to come to a complete stop. Almost as if the car had went into park but it was still in drive. Service transmission message came on board and check engine light.

The vehicle just cuts off while in the middle of driving and everything shuts off. New battery installed 2 months ago, no loose cables, plenty of gas. Cutting off while driving poses a very bad hazard.

While driving, when attempting to accelerate, the vehicle dies. Have to pull over, shift into park and attempt to restart. Sometimes restarts quickly, sometimes you have to crank and crank.

Car would not start I bought a battery and 2 days later car was completely dead. No power would not charge. Took it to a shop it had no starter or alternator issues.

It was towed to Brown's Jeep and was determined their was a leak in the power liftgate that corroded the module. There were recalls for 2015 Jeep Cherokees for the same reason but Jeep claims this is not due to a recall.

This has happened the past two weeks. I will go to accelerate my vehicle and an error message will pop up saying "in order to shift to desired gear you must be in park" or "shift to park then desired gear" and the check engine light, battery light, a lightening bolt red light and the electrical stability control light comes on.

This issues has happened twice once I was at an intersection and the second time I was on the freeway. I am driving with no issues and then all of a sudden the car loses speed. Purchased vehicle on 12/14/2015. On 1/25/17, at 17,000 miles the vehicle stalled while driving through an intersection. It was raining heavily and causing a traffic issue.

Takata recall my 2016 jeep cherokee will shut off while in motion. The car died while going through an intersection. I was able to coast into a safe place, but car would not restart again after for a few hours.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who performed a tune-up and cleaned the fuel lines. The vehicle was repaired; however, the vehicle stalled again. The vehicle was taken back to the same mechanic who determined that the fuel cylinder needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the vehicle stalled. The contact researched and became aware that the engine had been replaced in 2017. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 139,000.

Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2016 Jeep Cherokee. The vehicle was a private dealer sale in May of 2025.

Component: Power Transfer Unit (PTU) [XXX] , but my VIN is not included. The power transfer unit has failed. This appears to be a manufacturing defect identical to those listed under the recall.

vehicle losing power even when on. Does not accelerate in drive or reverse. My issue is the dealer found corroded wires, but when did they not say that the last time it was in which was 3 months ago.

The outside body of the vehicle is leaking, which is causing the Park break module to short circuit. This is causing my vehicle to suddenly stop and lock up.This has happened three times so far.

Started hesitating and did it at random times. I had a tune up done and it continued. I thought it was the transmission and took it to the transmission shop and they didn’t find anything wrong with the transmission.

the parking brake has engaged several times at low speeds in parking lots, comes on when turn the vehicle on, and when placed into park. not sure if it will do it during high speeds, at the shop now. it happened during the Power Transfer Unit failed and should be looked at as a part affected by that.

I purchased my car brand new in 2016. I did not drive the vehicle often since working in NYC and parking was impossible. Then we had the Pandemic in 2020-current and I have been working from home for the last 2 years and 8 months.

Our vehicle does not show any open recalls but this should be investigated as being associated with the active recall for Power Liftgate.

The contact owns a 2016 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while her son was driving at an unknown speed, there was smoke coming from the liftgate. Fellow motorists alerted her son of the failure as he pulled over and allowed the liftgate to cool down.

Blower module, a/c module and yes it’s available anytime. For starters my a/c doesn’t work completely and I have a newborn that cannot be in this vehicle due to that issue. Also with my first encounter with the issue, my car turned off and all the lights came on then turned off and warned that autostart/stop didn’t work, and my emergency brakes didn’t work along with my traction control.

My Vehicle shuts down once a day, every morning after about a couple minutes of driving. The engine shuts off, the dash notifies me to "Shift vehicle into park then desired gear" but with my engine off, I have to restart my car as well. My car won't restart unless I try over and over and hold the key while turning the ignition.

Car has only once had a MIL light activate. It was at 76000 and required a thermostat replacement. Cost 250 mechanics labor and part cost.

The component that needed replacement was the PTU (Power Transfer Unit). My Service 4WD drive light began going on so I brought it to my mechanic who told me there was a recall associated with this diagnostic code and to bring it to Jeep dealership. I then brought to dealership, was charged $160.00 and told that the recall was not for my particular VIN number and the cost of the repair was $3,000.

Our jeep started displaying and error stating "vehicle needs to be stopped to shift" and after this error would display the engine would cut off. We took it to the dealership and we were told that the shifter bezel needed to be replaced. It was replaced in March.

Had an issue with my PTU that required to be replaced after finding "internal debris" which started with my 4WD Drive light came on. I feel this could fit under an active recall since my 1) Make (Jeep), 2) Model (Cherokee) 3) Year (2016) and 4) Part (PTU) including recall W47 (campaign 20V343) and W48 (campaign 20E037).

The bezel around the shifter (the part with the lights specifically) started shorting and giving an error to service the shifter. Sometimes it will go away if the car is turned off and back on again. There are also times where, when shifting, the car refuses to shift into any gear and stays in park.

Service transmission error alerting after car reaches 50mph. Car loses ability to change gears and drops drastically in speed. Extremely dangerous in traffic.

Service shifter issue, replaced the shifter 3 times and problem keeps coming back months later

Service shifter issues, this is my fourth time needing to repair/replace the bezel and harness.. Dash says service shifter and all lights from park, drive, reverse etc light up red while driving at which time must pull vehicle over and restart to reset it until repaired. This has happened to me 4 times now beginning in 2016, 2017, 2019, and again now in 2020.

It first started with 911 vehicle phone "vehicle phone requires service" please contact dealer. Then after a few months the display will take a while to turn on, at one point during that time I went to turn on my car and it wouldn't start, it said "key fob not found" when key was with me. It did finally turn on after I removed the key from fob.

The sunroof will not close. When the button is pressed to auto-close the sunroof, the roof begins to close but stops 3-5 inches from full close and then reopens fully. It takes three attempts to auto-close before the system stops auto-close and then you have to hold the close button for it to fully close.

I have 43,000 on my 2016..was driving home on the freeway and my service transmission warning came on and now service engine light is on....sounds like a common problem

The vehicle was brought to the dealership for several issues at one time on 5/16/2017 (mileage 32779). The vehicle was purchased, new, 5/2016. The service shifter message had been coming on and going off and the dealership told me that they did not know why and could not do anything about it unless it was on when I brought it in.

While in motion: if the 2016 jeep cherokee drives over a slight bump, various electrical components will lose power and a warning light will appear on dashboard screen -- most of the time the service brake system warning will display; and other times, the screen power will completely shut off.

The vehicle was driven to morian chrysler jeep (374 siemers dr, cape girardeau, mo 63701) where it was determined that there was a failure with the four wheel drive system.

Service shifter indicator comes on- solid red lights appear on the shifter in every gear. Comes on every couple of days. Cargurus has several people complaining about experiencing the same problem.

Faulty engine with excessive oil consumption. Engine piston blown at 54k, on brand new 2016 jeep cherokee, and consequently repaired under manufacturer warranty. Fca and dealership difficult to work with and attempted everything to avoid the repair until I obtained legal counsel.

While leaving my office and making a left hand turn the car completely stopped mid turn. There was no check engine light on, no battery light appeared and the dash ,radio and head lights were still on. While driving my SUV twice it decelerated and would not move I couldn't push the gas to make it go faster or anything. When I turned it of and then turned it back on it had trouble starting back up. I took it to my dealership and they said that it was 2 quarts low on oil.

On 2 separate occasions while in motion on a city street all of the gear shifts lights came on and where you see your mileage that screen read service shifter. This stayed visible until the car was turned off and restarted.

Shifter service error message appeared in two occasions within the span of a month. First encounter, was a few days after taking the car off the dealership lot. I was entering the drive away and all of sudden, shifter service error message appeared and all the gear indicators flashed bright red.

Tamara recall...ever since I bought my jeep brannew the radio sometimes does not work, service shifter is coming up, also other things are coming up saying automatic shut down service..wheels are not straight, among other things. This should not be happening on a jeep that's 3 years old. Now the dealership wants 99.00 to check it out plus whatever the problem is.

MY JEEP CHEROKEE LIMITED 2016'S ENGINE WILL SHUT OFF MID DRIVE. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME THREE TIMES WHILE ON THE ROAD FOR THE PAST 4 MONTHS OR SO. THE ISSUE BEGINS WITH THE DASH STARTING TO FLICKER, THE AC AND RADIO WILL SHUT OFF, ANY ACTIVELY ENABLED FUNCTIONS WILL SHUT OFF/DISABLE (LANE SENSE, CRUISE CONTROL, AUTO START/STOP), TWO TIMES OUT OF THE THREE, THE VEHICLE ENGINE SHUTS OFF SECONDS AFTER, CAUSING THE GREATEST RISK TO SAFETY SINCE THE VEHICLE IS ESSENTIALLY CRUISING WITH NO POWER WHATSOEVER AT AN AVERAGE OF 70MPH (MOSTLY DRIVE ON FREEWAYS/HIGHWAYS), FORCING ME TO PULL OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD/SHOULDER IN ORDER TO BREAK TO A FULL STOP, PLACE THE VEHICLE ON PARK AND THEN RESTART THE VEHICLE IN ORDER TO GET BACK ON THE ROAD. I BELIEVE JEEP HAD ISSUED A RECALL FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN (SAFETY RECALL U63). I HAVE TAKEN MY JEEP TO A LOCAL DEALERSHIP TO GET THIS ISSUE FIXED. I RECEIVED THE ASSESSMENT FROM THE DEALERSHIP SAYING THAT THE RECALL ISSUE WAS FIXED. A WEEK AFTER I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP THE ISSUE HAPPENED AGAIN, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON BUT TURNED OFF AFTER SO BY THE TIME I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN, THEY "COULDN'T HELP ME" SINCE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS NOT ON AT THE TIME. I ALSO DID NOT HAVE A WAY TO PROVE THAT THIS ISSUE WAS HAPPENING STILL TO MY VEHICLE SO I LEFT DISAPPOINTED AND SURE IT WOULD HAPPEN AGAIN AT SOME POINT. AS OF TODAY 28 MARCH 2019 THE ISSUE HAPPENED AGAIN YESTERDAY ON THE WAY TO WORK AROUND 0836AM, LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO RECORD A VIDEO OF IT AS IT WAS HAPPENING THAT I WOULD BE HAPPY TO SHARE, THE VEHICLE DID NOT SHUT OFF DURING THE VIDEO. I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE NEW, IN 2016, FROM A DEALERSHIP IN WA STATE.

2016 jeep kl trailhawk (v6) will randomly have no electricity/power at all. Not even to unlock doors or for the dome lights to come on. This is after the vehicle sits overnight, for 10 to 12 hours.

Shortly after I get gas the vehicle will go from drive to idle and a warning message will pop up that says I need to shift to park. This has happened while waiting to take a left at lights and sometimes as soon as I go to pull out of the gas station.

Jeep 2016 power liftgate won't open or close. This leads to the inability to manually close the liftgate, and the interior lights stay luminated. There are recalls; however my VIN isn't listed.

While driving, vehicle shuts down unexpectedly and will not restart. Five + incidents have occurred this year alone, first incident occurred on jan 25, 2017 - the most recent occurred today aug 24, 2017. An engine replacement has been completed on the vehicle, however new/related faulty issues have been identified to include the transmission and software programming.

When at idle at a stop sign or stop light the parking brake will engage. I have to put my jeep in park and then turn the jeep off and back on a few times to disengage the parking brake. This has occurred multiple times.

Instroment light come back on with all other lights ignition off. Runs battery down.

The Vehicle stops abrutly while moving and engages emergency parking break and powers down and activating needing to be shifted into park. Vehicle then will be shifted into park and shifted back into drive but will not move until vehicle is turned off and turned back on.

The back lift gate will not open with key fob or by pushing the button at the bottom of the back door. The only way to open or close the back hatch is to manually lift the door and in turn manually close it as well. Completely random and unpredictable but happens quite frequently.

The shifter causes an error whenever I shift into drive. An alert comes up on the dashboard making the dashboard inaccessible and the PRNDL lights up red. The alert says "service shifter."

When I went to leave work yesterday on my dash a "P" with a circle around it was illuminated on my dash is orange. I also was unable to drive in reverse as my cars parking brake was on. I tried many things to get it to release with no luck.

I brought in my vehicle for the power train update recall and it triggered my shifter light to come on which now they are saying is the shifter bezel and harness and I have to pay out of pocket for. It was not on prior to the recall software update for the power train

Driving down the highway the service shifter just pops up

The Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) system is locked in engaged mode and I am unable to release the EPB causing the car to be immobilized.

This car has been stopping in the middle of the road basically since I got it. I bring it in and it breaks down over and over. Most recently in front of my house on a very busy street with 18 wheelers.

I've read much on this issue and it seems that there needs to be some sort of recall to fix this issue. My 2016 jeep with less than 20k miles on it is getting a "service shifter" warning message. When this light turns on, all the shifter lights come on as well.

Service shifter message appeared in the center display and is lock in place, not being able to scroll through the menus any longer. Next to the shifter all lights for shifter position are illuminated and you cannot see which gear the vehicle is in anymore from looking down at the shifter. This has happened multiple times mostly while in motion but has also happened while stationary.

My rear glass windshield burst when heating up using remote start. I've read multiple complaints about this happening with jeeps as well as ford trucks. It's very dangerous.

The problem started 7/23/2019. The jeep is stopping randomly at red lights and stop signs. It starts back up but the AC is on defrost and I have to put it back on cool.
