Component: POWER TRAIN:DRIVELINE:DIFFERENTIAL UNIT
Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Relative movement in the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft may cause some input spline teeth to wear off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, power cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission which results in a loss of drive while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the Park function while stationary.
Risk: A loss of drive can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. A loss of the Park function can cause unintended vehicle rollaway which can increase the risk of a crash or injury.
Fix: FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update that will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in Park by activating the electronic parking brake if a failed input spline occurs. This recall began July 14, 2020. Owners may contact FCA USA LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is W47.

Your power transfer unit (PTU) is making a loud whining noise that has been getting worse over three years. The dealership says this component could fail and leave you without power to the wheels while driving, which is a serious safety risk on the highway. You're waiting for a replacement part that's on back order, so your vehicle is out of service for an extended period.

Your Jeep's transmission and power transfer unit (PTU) have a defect that causes hesitation when accelerating from a stop, followed by sudden surging—a problem that's gotten worse since you bought it. This unpredictable behavior is dangerous when entering intersections, turning across traffic, or merging because the vehicle won't accelerate when you expect it to. The dealership has confirmed the transmission and PTU need replacement, but the part is on national backorder with no estimated arrival date, and the repair cost exceeds your vehicle's value. Fixing this will likely require replacement of both the transmission and power transfer unit.

Electrical System →2 issues
Your vehicle lost all power while driving after a software recall update failed to fix the underlying problem with the transaxle wiring harness. The wires physically melted due to electrical resistance, leaving you stranded in traffic and creating a crash risk, and you're now seeing oil pooling underneath the vehicle. The dealership says the recall is complete, but the hardware defect remains and has gotten worse. You may need a complete replacement of the transaxle jumper harness and wiring, not just a software update.

Fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your Rear Differential Module (RDM) failed at 72,829 miles, requiring an expensive out-of-warranty replacement. In December 2025, your vehicle developed grinding and binding sounds from the rear end; the dealer initially misdiagnosed it as a driveshaft bearing failure, but after installing a new driveshaft, determined the RDM was actually the problem again. You've now had to order multiple replacement RDMs due to defects and shipping delays, with your vehicle remaining at the dealer awaiting installation. The fix will involve replacing the Rear Differential Module with a properly functioning unit.
