Open Safety Recalls (4)
NHTSA Campaign: 14V828000
Component: EQUIPMENT
Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Toyota 4Runner, Tacoma, FJ Cruiser, Land Cruiser, RAV4, Scion FRS, and XB vehicles. The affected vehicles may have accessories installed by SET, such as running boards or other items, that were incorrectly installed. The accessory attaching fasteners were not tightened with the proper torque, possibly causing the accessory to detach from the vehicle.
Risk: Accessories that detach from a vehicle may result in a vehicle crash and/or personal injury.
Fix: SET will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and tighten the affected bolts, free of charge. The recall began February 23, 2015. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226. SET's number for this recall is SET-14B.
NHTSA Campaign: 15V011000
Component: TRAILER HITCHES
Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Toyota Rav4 vehicles manufactured June 1, 2013, to December 29, 2014, and equipped with an accessory trailer light module. The software within the module may incorrectly detect an electrical short and preventively turn off the electrical current and the trailer lights.
Risk: If the system incorrectly detects an electrical short and turns off the trailer lights while the trailer is being towed at night, there is an increased risk of a crash.
Fix: SET will notify owners, and dealers will replace the trailer light module with a new unit with corrected software, free of charge. The recall began on March 17, 2015. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226. SET's number for this recall is SET-15A.
NHTSA Campaign: 15V144000
Component: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2015 Camry, Camry Hybrid, Highlander, and Highlander Hybrid, and 2014-2015 Rav4 vehicles. A component of the electric power steering (EPS) electronic control unit (ECU) may have been damaged during the manufacturing process. Over time, this damage may result in failure of the electric power steering system.
Risk: An unexpected loss of power steering increases the risk of a crash.
Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the serial number of the EPS ECU or steering column assembly. If the number is within the affected range, the EPS ECU will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began on May 7, 2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.
NHTSA Campaign: 23V734000
Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:12V/24V/48V BATTERY
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2013-2018 RAV4 vehicles. Certain replacement 12-volt batteries may not fit properly in the battery tray, allowing the battery to move and contact the hold-down bracket, possibly causing a short circuit.
Risk: A battery short circuit increases the risk of a fire.
Fix: Dealers will replace the battery clamp sub-assembly, battery tray, and positive terminal cover, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed December 27, 2024, to 2013-2014 RAV4 owners. Additional owner notification letters will be mailed in phases, phase 2 will begin on May 14, 2025, and phase 3 in late July 2025. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 23TB13 and 23TA13.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 191)
Electrical System →4 issues
Your 2014 RAV4 lost all engine power while you were driving at 20 mph and turning right, with no warning light beforehand. The vehicle had to be towed to the dealer. This issue is related to an open electrical system recall (NHTSA Campaign 23V734000), but repair parts weren't available when you contacted the dealer. The fix will likely involve replacing or repairing the electrical component identified in the recall once parts become available.

Toyota sent you a recall letter to replace your battery due to a fire risk from faulty hold-down clamps that could cause a short circuit. When you brought your 2014 RAV4 to the dealer, you were charged $189 plus tax for the replacement because your car has two batteries instead of the expected one. You feel the battery replacement should be covered under the recall at no cost, since the safety concern is the reason for the recall.

You received a recall notice (NHTSA Campaign 23V734000) for your 2014 Toyota Rav4's electrical system, but the dealership told you the replacement part isn't available yet. You've been waiting longer than seems reasonable for the repair part to arrive, and you've reported this delay to Toyota. Although you haven't experienced an actual failure yet, the lack of available parts is preventing your recall repair from being completed.

All four of your door locks aren't working reliably — they lock and unlock inconsistently, and sometimes don't respond at all. This creates a safety concern because you can't be sure your doors are actually locked while driving, especially at night with passengers. You have to manually check each door multiple times since the locks behave unpredictably. Fixing this will likely require replacing the faulty door lock actuators in all four doors.

Your 2014 Toyota RAV4's hood and roof paint began peeling in early 2023 and has now flaked off in large sections, exposing bare metal that can rust. You discovered this is a widespread manufacturing defect (paint code 070) that Toyota acknowledged through a Customer Support Program (ZKG) that expired in 2024, but you were never notified about it. Toyota declined your request for help with repainting, which typically costs $4,000–$5,000. A professional repaint or clear coat application will be needed to prevent rust and restore the affected surfaces.

Structure →3 issues
During rainstorms, water is leaking into your cabin from multiple locations including the pillars (A, B, C, D) and the ceiling area. The problem has happened repeatedly even after multiple service attempts, and your rear passenger carpet has already been replaced due to water damage. Since these leaks are near the curtain airbag housing, there's a concern they could affect airbag function during a crash.

Your car's factory paint is peeling off in large sections on the roof and hood, leaving bare metal exposed underneath. This appears to be a widespread issue with this particular blue paint color across multiple Toyota models. You may be concerned about rust and corrosion developing on the exposed metal over time. Addressing this will likely require professional paint removal, surface preparation, and repainting of the affected areas.

Your 2014 RAV4's original Blizzard Pearl paint has started peeling on the body panels around 9.5-10 years after purchase. Toyota offered a Customer Support Program (ZKG) to cover this issue, but you weren't notified about it — the notices were sent to the previous owner. When you reported the peeling 5 months after the 10-year mark, Toyota denied coverage because the program had already expired. Fixing this would typically involve professional repainting of the affected body panels.

Steering →2 issues
Your steering wheel suddenly locked up while turning right at low speeds (around 20 mph), making it impossible to turn the wheel. After completing the turn, the steering returned to normal and several warning lights that appeared during the incident went away. This happened more than once. A dealer confirmed your vehicle wasn't covered under a related recall, and the problem hasn't been repaired.

Your power steering assist keeps cutting out intermittently, forcing you to use excessive force to turn the steering wheel — it even seized completely during a left turn. Your maintenance warning light is on, but mechanics found no fault codes initially; the dealer eventually diagnosed a defective steering column. This issue matches a known recall, but your vehicle wasn't included in it, and the problem hasn't been fixed.

Power Train,unknown Or Other,service Brakes →1 issue
Your 2014 RAV4 has multiple serious pre-existing problems that weren't disclosed when you bought it in June 2025. These include a failing torque converter causing vibration, severely corroded axle brackets, aftermarket brake parts with red-flag brake system issues and pedal pulsation, extensive underbody corrosion, an exhaust system failure, a rock stuck in the seat belt buckle, and an aftermarket battery installed instead of the required OEM part for a safety recall. The dealership has documented all these issues on invoices and inspections, and the vehicle has been out of service since February 2026. Addressing these problems will require multiple repairs including transmission service, brake system overhaul, structural corrosion treatment, exhaust and catalytic converter replacement, and installing the correct OEM battery.

Air Bags →1 issue
After a car accident, your steering airbag deflated normally, but the driver's side door airbag stayed inflated. This made it difficult and time-consuming to exit the vehicle after the crash, forcing you to slide out from underneath the airbag. Because you couldn't get out quickly, you remained in traffic longer than necessary, increasing your risk of being hit again. The repair would involve inspecting the airbag system's deflation mechanism and potentially replacing the faulty side airbag module or its electronic controls.

Steering,electrical System,unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your RAV4's engine is stalling suddenly without warning, especially while turning, which causes you to lose power steering and steering control. This has happened multiple times even after a dealership repair attempt, and has already resulted in your vehicle hitting a curb and going through bushes. Fixing this will likely require a thorough electrical and fuel system diagnostic to identify why the engine is shutting down unexpectedly.

Steering,electrical System →1 issue
Your electric power steering system has malfunctioned, which can cause your car to jerk or swerve unexpectedly without warning lights to alert you. Although there's a recall for the 2014 RAV4's electric power steering, your vehicle doesn't qualify for it. The dealership estimates the repair will cost $3,014 and involves replacing both the steering column assembly and the EPS motor.

Exterior Lighting →1 issue
Your headlights have been getting progressively dimmer over the past 10 years and are now so dim that you don't feel safe driving at night. You've already had the lenses cleaned and buffed, which helped only slightly, and even with a new battery the lights still look very weak. The problem could be failing bulbs, internal lens degradation, or wiring/electrical issues, and you'll likely need to have the headlight system inspected and possibly replaced.
