Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Tucson vehicles manufactured May 19, 2015, to November 14, 2016, and 2017 Santa Fe vehicles manufactured November 28, 2015, to November 14, 2016. The affected vehicles may be equipped with an accessory trailer hitch wiring harness that, due to a malfunction of the tow hitch module, may result, in the trailer brake lights being constantly illuminated. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, " Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Risk: If the trailer brake lights stay illuminated while being used, other drivers may be confused, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected accessory trailer hitch wiring harnesses, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin January 13, 2017. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 153.

Component: ENGINE

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2017 Tucson and Sonata Hybrid vehicles. The connecting rod bearings inside the engine may wear prematurely, which can result in engine damage.

Risk: A damaged engine can increase the risk of a fire or it can cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect the engine. If bearing damage is found, the engine will be replaced. Dealers will also install a software update containing a new Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS). Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners were notified of the defect on November 16, 2021. Owner notification letters were mailed January 15, 2022. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 209.

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) recalled certain 2019-2021 Tucson vehicles on September 4, 2020. On December 30, 2020, Hyundai expanded the recall population, and added certain 2016-2018 Tucson vehicles. The Anti-lock Brake Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) could corrode internally and cause an electrical short, possibly resulting in an engine compartment fire.

Risk: An engine compartment fire can increase the risk of injury or crash.

Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the HECU fuse. For 2019-2021 model years, the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) software will also be updated. Recall repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures as a precaution until the recall repair is complete. The recall began November 2, 2020. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 195.

Your 2017 Tucson made an unusually loud grumbling noise from the engine and unexpectedly went into limp mode (reduced power mode) while driving, with no warning lights showing. The dealer couldn't diagnose or fix the problem at around 98,000 miles. Hyundai asked for oil change records and suggested the issue was caused by inadequate maintenance, though you may dispute this. The fix will likely involve engine diagnostics and potential internal engine repairs or replacement.

Your 2017 Tucson has an outstanding federal safety recall related to the engine that you've been unable to get completed. Over two years, multiple authorized Hyundai dealerships have canceled or refused to schedule your recall repair appointment. Additionally, your vehicle has experienced significant paint chipping that has affected its condition and resale value. Getting this engine recall completed promptly is critical, and the repair should be performed by an authorized dealership at no cost to you.

Your engine is burning through about a quart of oil every 500 miles, which is much higher than normal. A master technician confirmed the low oil level and performed an oil change, but the problem persists. You're having to carry extra oil with you on longer trips to prevent the engine from seizing, even though your vehicle has been well-maintained with all regular service completed on schedule.

Your 2017 Hyundai Tucson entered 'Limp Home Mode' and lost engine power while driving, with diagnostic testing showing a knock sensor detection system error (code P1326). Your vehicle is covered under a Hyundai class action settlement that should provide free repairs for this issue, but your dealership is refusing to perform the warrantied repair and instead demanding $816.22 for the knock sensor replacement. The dealership is also threatening storage fees and withholding diagnostic reports despite your requests. Resolving this will likely require contacting Hyundai corporate about the settlement coverage and potentially filing a complaint with your state's attorney general or small claims court to enforce the warranty.

While driving uphill, your engine RPM suddenly spiked and the vehicle hesitated to accelerate, accompanied by a warning message saying "Transmission too hot stop safely." After turning off the car for about two minutes, the warning disappeared even though the transmission wouldn't have actually cooled down that quickly, which is concerning. This sudden loss of power could be dangerous if it happens in traffic when you need to merge or climb hills.

Your engine is consuming oil much faster than normal — the oil level drops significantly between oil changes even though oil consumption tests show inconsistent results. The dealer has performed multiple visits, partial engine disassembly, and a combustion chamber cleaning, but the problem persists. The manufacturer has denied replacing the engine and the issue remains unresolved. A permanent fix may require engine replacement or a more comprehensive engine rebuild.

I purchased this car from drive time, and when told about a possible recall on the engine I asked about it. We were told that the issue had been resolved. Not even 10 minutes after driving it off the lot the engine started misfiring, we had done a test drive prior to purchasing this vehicle and nothing had popped up on the dash about any problems.

While driving on the interstate at highway speed, my 2017 Hyundai Tucson lost power without any warning lights or prior symptoms. The vehicle experienced an immediate loss of propulsion while I was traveling in traffic, creating a dangerous situation because surrounding vehicles were also moving at highway speed & I had to quicky maneuver the vehicle to the shoulder with no power.

Car engine seized and lost ALL power going 60mph down the highway at night with my child in the back seat. I have poured quarts and quarts of oil in this vehicle because it burns oil at an alarming rate until it eventually runs dry and the engine seizes. This is extremely dangerous and luckily my child and I were able to drift to the side of the road without harm and injury.

Your door latches are failing to open from the inside when you pull the handle. The problem started with the rear passenger door and has now spread to the driver's door, leaving you unable to exit normally without climbing over seats to reach a working door. This is a safety concern since you could be trapped in an emergency situation. The fix will likely involve replacing the faulty door latch mechanisms.

Your ABS brake system has malfunctioned, causing the brake pad on your driver's side rear wheel to break apart and fall off. You noticed a squealing noise while driving, and after the metal piece detached, your ABS brakes stopped working altogether. The issue will likely require replacing the damaged ABS brake pad and inspecting the brake system to determine why the pad failed.

Your 2017 Tucson consumed excessive engine oil and made abnormal knocking sounds, which led to an engine replacement under a recall. After the new engine was installed, fuel began pouring out from underneath the vehicle when you started it—a problem the dealer attributed to a failed O-ring in the fuel injectors. The dealer replaced the O-ring, but fuel continued leaking from underneath at startup. The vehicle has been returned to the dealer multiple times and remains unrepaired. The fix will likely involve replacing the fuel injector O-rings or fuel injector assembly to stop the leak.

Your car is burning through oil extremely quickly — it becomes completely dry within a week of an oil change, which can damage the engine and catalytic converter. You may experience stalling and poor acceleration while driving, creating a safety hazard. The engine warning lights don't alert you to this problem. The repair will likely involve diagnosing the source of the oil consumption, which could range from valve seal replacement to engine rebuild depending on the underlying cause.
