NHTSA Campaign: 16V147000

Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TAIL LIGHTS

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2016 Hyundai Tucson vehicles manufactured May 26, 2015 to January 15, 2016 and equipped with an accessory trailer hitch harness either included with the accessory trailer hitch or sold as a service part. In the affected vehicles, when the vehicle's engine is running and the brake lights are illuminated, if the turn signal is activated, the trailer turn signal lights will either turn off or remain continuously illuminated (not flash). As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number 108, " Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Risk: Failure to illuminate the trailer's turn signal lights would prevent the communication of the driver's intent, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will update the tow hitch harness, free of charge. The recall began on May 2, 2016. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9640. Hyundai's number for this recall is 142.

Your engine made an abnormal sound while driving, then the vehicle stalled shortly after. When a mechanic came to perform an oil change, they found metal shavings in the oil, which suggests internal engine damage. The vehicle wasn't repaired and the issue occurred at around 94,000 miles. You'll likely need internal engine inspection and possibly engine rebuilding or replacement to address the metal debris.

Your 2016 Tucson's engine warning light came on, and after a dealership oil change and software update, your vehicle suddenly lost power and entered limp mode twice within short drives, displaying a diagnostic code associated with engine bearing problems. Hyundai has refused to repair the engine under warranty and is blaming a catalytic converter instead, despite the diagnostic code pointing to a known engine defect. This sudden loss of power while driving creates a serious safety risk.

The car has been diagnosed with internal engine failure by both an independent service center and a dealership service center. The issue was described as a rod timing issue causing knocking, leading to failure of the engine. A light was not on for a majority of the issue but did start flashing before car became completely undrivable.

Your 2016 Hyundai Tucson GDI engine is consuming oil much faster than normal, causing the oil level to drop dangerously low between changes. You've experienced stalling during acceleration, had to replace the turbocharger, and most recently the engine shook violently on the highway when you ran out of oil; the check engine light then came on and stayed on. The dealership suspects engine damage but won't cover repairs under warranty since there are no active recalls, leaving you responsible for all repair costs.

The transmission began slipping and hesitating within days of purchase. The vehicle intermittently fails to accelerate when pressing the gas pedal, especially when pulling into traffic or crossing intersections. This creates a serious safety risk because the vehicle does not respond when needed, leaving me exposed to oncoming traffic.

Your door latch lock assembly has failed, leaving the door unable to open from inside or outside. This has happened more than once on your vehicle, and a previous time trapped your children in the back seat. While your dealership confirmed the issue, they're charging around $1,000 to fix it, though there was a technical service bulletin (TSB) for this problem that has since expired for your vehicle. The repair will involve replacing the faulty door latch lock assembly.

Your engine shut down and the dealership told you it failed due to a water hose problem, but you believe it may be related to a known recall for connecting rod bearing failure. You're concerned because there were no coolant leaks before or after the vehicle was towed in. You're asking the dealership to perform a detailed inspection—including checking the oil pan for metal debris, running a bearing clearance test, and reviewing engine diagnostic codes—to confirm whether the water hose actually caused the failure or if the engine's internal bearing failure caused the cooling system damage. The repair will likely require either a detailed inspection of the oil pan and bearings, or possibly a full engine teardown to determine the root cause.

Your dashboard warning lights are all illuminated, and the dash lights flicker with sudden bright surges. You're having trouble shutting off the engine and sometimes need to disconnect the battery to cut power. You've also noticed hesitation when accelerating from a stop. This likely involves a charging system or electrical fault that needs diagnostic testing to identify the root cause.

Your driver's side seat belt won't buckle securely and isn't retracting properly. This happened without you pulling on the belt, and the seat belt failed to latch into the buckle as it should. A seat belt that doesn't secure or retract properly is a safety concern and should be inspected by a dealer to determine if the buckle mechanism or retractor needs adjustment or replacement.

The vehicle burns oil at an abnormal rate, requiring me to add approximately one quart of engine oil every one to two weeks, even though the vehicle is driven very infrequently. This condition poses a serious safety risk because the engine could run low or completely out of oil while the vehicle is in operation, potentially causing sudden engine failure.
