2026 Hyundai Tucson — Known Issues & Recalls
Complaints from Jan 2026 to Mar 2026
The most reported issue is forward collision avoidance problems (6 complaints). 3 complaints involved crashes.
Open Safety Recalls (2)
NHTSA Campaign: 25V549000
Component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:CRITICAL FASTENERS
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2025-2026 Tucson and Santa Fe vehicles. The connecting rod bolts in the engine may have been improperly tightened, which can cause a loss of drive power and engine damage, possibly resulting in an oil leak.
Risk: A loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash. An oil leak in the presence of hot engine components can increase the risk of an engine compartment fire.
Fix: Dealers will replace the engine, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 23, 2025. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 281.
NHTSA Campaign: 26V047000
Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/PANEL
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2025-2026 Tucson Hybrid, Tucson Plug-In Hybrid Electric (PHEV), 2026 IONIQ 5, Santa Cruz, Kona, Palisade, Palisade Hybrid, Santa Fe, Santa Fe Hybrid, Sonata, Sonata Hybrid, and Tucson vehicles. Due to a software error, the instrument panel display may fail. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 101, "Controls and Displays."
Risk: An instrument panel display that fails to show critical safety information, such as the speedometer or warning lights, increases the risk of a crash.
Fix: The instrument panel display software will be updated over-the-air (OTA) or by a dealer, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 24, 2026. Owners may contact Hyundai's customer service at 855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 293. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on January 28, 2026.
Owner-Reported Issues (13 of 13)
Forward Collision Avoidance →6 issues
Your car's forward collision warning system braked unexpectedly twice in one day on the highway. The first time, when another vehicle braked ahead at 75 mph, your car braked so hard that vehicles behind you had to swerve around you. The second time, during stop-and-go traffic, your car came to a complete stop without warning, and the vehicle behind you hit you. The system may need inspection to determine why it's activating when it shouldn't or braking too aggressively.

Your car's forward collision warning system is suddenly slamming on the brakes hard instead of allowing a gradual slowdown, even when you're already braking. This happens repeatedly when the car ahead brakes, and it's severe enough to risk being rear-ended by traffic behind you. The system needs to be reprogrammed or replaced to prevent this aggressive braking behavior.

Your Forward Collision Avoidance system has activated and applied the brakes hard twice in the first 30 days of ownership, even when no vehicles were nearby—once at 50 mph and again at 15 mph—causing unsecured items to fly around the cabin and putting you at risk of being rear-ended. The system resets to "on" every time you start the car, making you uncomfortable driving it. This issue will likely require the system to be scanned for sensor faults, recalibrated, or potentially repaired or replaced by a dealer.

While driving in stop-and-go highway traffic, your Forward Collision Avoidance system's emergency braking activated unexpectedly when you were already braking—even though you were maintaining a safe distance (at least 3 car lengths) behind the vehicle ahead. This sudden emergency braking caused the car behind you to rear-end your vehicle. The fix would likely involve a software update to the collision avoidance system's sensitivity settings and threshold calibration.

Your forward collision avoidance system is triggering sudden hard stops (called "phantom braking") multiple times without any visible obstacles in the road. This has happened at least three times in your first month and a half of ownership, creating a safety concern if another vehicle is following you. The dealership recalibrated the system but the problem persists. Disabling the front assist feature through a button click appears to be the only current workaround.

Your forward collision avoidance system is braking too aggressively when the car ahead brakes, even when you're at a safe distance and already applying your own brakes. You've had two near rear-end collisions in a few weeks because the system appears overly sensitive to the lead vehicle's braking. Additionally, the system resets to "on" every time you start the car, forcing you to manually disable it each time. The fix may involve recalibrating the collision detection sensitivity settings or updating the safety system software.

Electrical System →2 issues
Your 2026 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid is displaying two recurring dashboard warning messages related to the electronic shifter system: "Shifter System Malfunction! Service Immediately" (which has left you unable to shift gears and stranded) and "PARK Malfunction. Engage parking brake when parking vehicle" (indicating the electronic parking brake system isn't working properly). These faults started appearing within the first week of ownership and have occurred multiple times despite the vehicle being taken to the dealership twice. The issue appears to be a manufacturing defect covered by Hyundai Technical Service Bulletins, and the dealership has been unable to resolve it. A complete diagnostic scan of the vehicle's fault codes and likely replacement or reprogramming of the electronic shifter and park brake control modules will be needed to fix this issue.

Your 2026 Tucson lost all electrical power after just 3 months and 840 miles—the car wouldn't unlock or start without a jump. Even after jump-starting, your dashboard cluster remained dark, leaving you without a speedometer, warning lights, turn signals, or headlights while driving to the dealership. This electrical failure on a nearly-new vehicle with minimal use suggests a serious charging or battery system problem. The repair will likely involve diagnosing and replacing either the battery, alternator, or related electrical wiring.

Steering,power Train,electrical System →1 issue
While driving, your steering suddenly locked up for about 5 seconds and wouldn't turn. Separately, when shifting into reverse, the car got stuck in reverse and wouldn't shift into park or drive until the engine was turned off and restarted three times. Both issues are safety concerns that need immediate attention from a technician.

Service Brakes, forward Collision Avoidance →1 issue
Your brake pedal went all the way to the floor during a collision, and the brakes didn't stop the car—your passenger was injured. The forward collision warning system didn't alert you, and the automatic braking didn't engage. There was about a 10-second delay before the brakes finally worked, even with your foot pressed to the floor. This issue was captured on your dash cam. The problem likely involves the brake system's ability to respond quickly and the forward collision prevention system's sensors or controls.

Service Brakes →1 issue
While parking your 2-month-old Tucson at low speed, you had to press the brake pedal all the way to the floor to bring it to a stop, with no warning lights appearing. The tow driver noticed excessive play in the brake pedal, but the dealership was unable to reproduce the problem or identify the cause after nearly a month of inspection. The brake system may need a complete inspection of the master cylinder, brake lines, and hydraulic components to find intermittent failures.

Fuel System, Gasoline →1 issue
Your car's fuel economy is significantly worse than expected — you're getting about 26 MPG instead of the advertised 36 MPG. You've been tracking your fuel consumption and consistently see this poor performance during normal driving. The dealer test drove the vehicle but found nothing wrong and suggested the issue might be your driving habits, which you don't believe is accurate. This could involve a fuel system component that's not delivering fuel efficiently or an engine management issue that may require diagnostic testing and potential repairs.

Lane Departure →1 issue
Your Hyundai Tucson displays a "Consider taking a coffee break" warning message that cannot be turned off. This constant warning may distract you while driving and could increase accident risk. The fix would involve a software update that allows you to disable this driver fatigue warning feature.
