Hyundai Motor Company is recalling certain model year 2011-2013 Elantra vehicles manufactured from November 12, 2010, through March 5, 2013. A support bracket attached to the headliner may become displaced during a side curtain airbag deployment.
Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will apply adhesive strips to the headliner, free of charge. The safety recall began during April 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 109.

Your car has three separate issues: First, you're experiencing recurring brake grinding noise even after replacing brake pads, rotors, and calipers on both axles—the grinding returns within weeks of repair despite the brake components being in good condition. Your airbag warning light flickers on and off, especially when you turn the steering wheel, which suggests a problem with the clock spring (spiral cable assembly) that controls airbag deployment. If the clock spring fails completely, your driver's airbag may not deploy in a crash, creating a serious safety risk. A repair will likely involve replacing the clock spring assembly under the steering column.

Clock spring failures are a well known issue with Hyundai/Kia models from the early 2010s. Hyundai has offered an extended warranty on most models, but has excluded the GT models, even though they use the same parts. My clock spring has failed, disabling the horn and driver air bag functionality.
Air bag light is on constantly, goes off if my steering wheel is turned a certain way. But will come back on immediately after if turned and will not go off of dashboard
The air bag warning light is mostly ON, but turns off intermittently. I was told this is a safety issue and will cost hundreds of dollars to fix. I am very anxious about this. I did not find any recall notices but did see many complaints about this issue for 2013 Hyundai Elantras.
My daughter had a tire blow out which caused the passenger side airbag to deploy. A piece of trim approximately 32 inches long flew off from the passenger's side hitting my daughter in the head and causing a concussion and requiring an emergency room visit.. Hyundai performed an investigation and stated the airbags deployed like they should have but refused to acknowledge the cause of my daughter's injury and would not discuss it further.
At approximately 67,000 miles the airbag light on the instrument cluster has become permanently illuminated. This appears to be a common issue, causing Hyundai to extend the warranty on the clock spring; however, the GT model is not covered by this technical service bulletin. This issue may impact the deployment of the airbags and so should be a safety recall rather than a TSB which doesn't even cover all affected models.
Traffic ahead of me rapidly decelerated. Upon applying the brakes, the peddle froze and then went to the floor without any resistance. I attempted to pump the brakes without success. I impacted the car ahead of me at 40 mph, the posted speed limit, creating substantial damage to both vehicles. The brakes failed to operate and the airbags failed to deploy upon impact. The vehicle failed to slow down and was reacting as if the accelerator was stuck. There were no system warnings at the time of the accident or afterwards. Braking abilities resumed immediately after impact. There is no visible evidence of any fluid leaks, brake fluid or otherwise. The vehicle was last serviced by the dealership for an oil change at the end of January 2024. A brake inspection was performed at that time. I was aware of a recall notice Campaign 251 regarding the brake ABS system. When I inquired at the last service date, I was informed no fix was available at that time. Current mileage is 49,779. I am still in the process of locating a repair shop.
* Defective airbag light on. * Expensive inspection to know what's wrong with the airbag. * Don’t know if in case of an accident the airbag is going to work or protect my life. * This seems to be a common issue in this type of cars and it seems unfair to pay for something like that to be repair when it seems like a manufacturer defect.
My airbag light has been on for the past few months, and I am worried about the airbags not deploying in an accident. I will need to follow up with a dealer on this issue, but have seen others online say they are being charged $250 to have it fixed.
The air bag dashboard light is on constantly which indicates that something is wrong and the airbag will not properly and safely deploy during a vehicle accident. This is a common problem with this make and model vehicle and should be recalled for manufacturer to replace for the safety of owners of their product.
The red dashboard light remains on all the time indicating a problem with the air bag. I'm not sure what is causing the light to remain on but it is concerning as I don't know whether airbag will deploy properly if needed. I recently visited the dealership for an appointment to install anti theft software due to recall. Two and a half hours later they presented me with an unsolicited appraisal of my vehicle with $1800 in recommended repairs to my car including $400 to replace a sun visor. During this unsolicited appraisal, the dealership neglected to list the red dashboard light that is constantly on. I believe that this is a common issue with Hyundai vehicles and should be fixed free as a recall because of safety concerns.
The airbag warning light illuminated while driving on a flat highway in safe driving conditions. No action occurred that would cause the airbag light to illuminate. The light is not going away.
I had a rear tire blowout causing the car to stop rapidly causing me to hit my face on the steering wheel so hard I got knocked out . My foot pressed on the gas and I hit a parked car. And my airbags never deployed. Insurance didn't pay my claim because it wasy falt I hit a parked car. Because I was knocked out. I don't remember anything about 30 seconds before the accident. Had my airbags worked maybe I could have remembered what really happened. When the collusion center inspected my car they said a defect in the car was the cause of my accident. But the insurance already denied the claim. The yellow tab was the airbag sensor

AIR BAG LIGHT IS ON CONSTANTLY. STARTED AS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM, BUT NOW IT IS ON CONSTANTLY. I AM NOT SURE IF THE AIR BAGS WILL WORK AND HAD CONFLICTING ANSWERS FROM THE LOCAL CAR DEALERSHIP. I NOTICED THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ABOUT AIR BAG LIGHT.
Airbag light comes on and off intermittently, such as when going over a bump or turning the wheel. This is already a known issue with 2012 Hyundai Elantra clock springs and the warranty should be extended to cover 2013 as well.
Airbag light comes on a few minutes after I start driving. I had my local Hyundai dealership look into and they said they didn't get any diagnostic codes and were unable to replicate the issue when test driving. The problem happens every time I drive and the fact that the airbag light is on is very worrisome and from researching this issue it seems it's rather common.
My airbag light comes on intermittently. Since this is a safety issue, it should be diagnosed and repaired at no cost.

The airbag light turned on about a month ago, and it stays on for a while then goes off then goes back on and so on. It is very disturbing that this could be a life threatening issue. My tire pressure sensor light is always on. I check the pressure at least once a week to make sure it’s okay, but the light is always on.

The contact stated that while driving at approximately 20 - 30 mph, her vehicle crashed into another vehicle's front and rear passenger doors when the other driver ran a red light. No air bags deploy upon impact. The contact and her daughter, who was a passenger sustained bruising to their knees, and the contact's head jerked forward and back from the impact. The contact received medical attention on the scene and was later admitted to the hospital, while her daughter went to urgent care. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard, where it remained. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 36,000.
Airbag warning light illuminated for months and will not turn off. Every once in a while it randomly goes away but then comes back on soon after. This is a safety issue if the airbag is not functioning properly and this safety system defect needs to be recalled and fixed for free. Also, I have replaced my brake lights 3 times in the last few years but as soon as I do a different tail/brake light goes out. What seems to be an electrical issue is also a hazard and safety issue if my brake lights cannot illuminate indicating braking.

My airbag light on dashboard is remaining on dashboard and vehicle check in progress is reported on my radio display information when i begin to start driving my car for past several weeks i have reset light as informed but does not correct the problem. i have had steering wheel bracket replaced and never have had a problem before now. The airbag light on my hyundai elantra has been turning on for a couple of minutes when i start the vehicle and then will turn off. After a few more minutes it will happen again as if there is a malfunction with the airbags and the computer is trying to trouble shoot the problem but still finding an error. I have only had this car for three months. Two weeks ago the Air Bag light OFF kept appearing while driving. Then 3 days ago the driver side seat belt locked. It will NOT release. I have read a lot of forums from many others with the same problem from Hyundai cars. The dealership charges 500-1500$ just to fix 1 seatbelt. Its a safety problem as well as fraud.

ON MONDAY WHEN I STARTED MY CAR I REALIZED MY AIRBAG LIGHT ON MY DASHBOARD WAS ON ALERTING ME THAT MY AIRBAGS ARE DEACTIVATED AND WON'T DEPLOY. MY CAR HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT AND THE AIRBAGS HAVE NEVER DEPLOYED. SEVERAL HYUNDAIS HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM SO HYUNDAI EXTENDED ITS WARRANTY FOR CERTAIN MODELS. THE 2013 ELANTRA SEDAN IS COVERED UNDER THIS WARRANTY, HOWEVER, THEY FAILED TO INCLUDE THE GT MODEL. THE GT MODEL HAS THE EXACT SAME PART WITH THE EXACT SAME ISSUES, THEREFORE IT SHOULD BE INCLUDED UNDER THE WARRANTY. THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT EXPERIENCES A HIGH RESISTANCE CONDITION, CAUSING THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG TO NOT DEPLOY. THE CLOCK SPRING DEVELOPS HIGH RESISTANCE, IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE DRIVERS AIR BAG WILL NOT DEPLOY AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PROPERLY PROTECT THE DRIVER, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURIES. HYUNDAI HAS ISSUED A RECALL/TSB FOR THE 2013 HYUNDAI ELANTRA SEDAN, BUT NOT THE HATCHBACK WHICH UTILIZES THE EXACT SAME PART. THE REPAIR COST IS ALMOST $500 AT THE DEALER AND BECAUSE THE REPAIR INVOLVES REMOVING THE AIRBAG AND REMOVING THE STEERING WHEEL IT POSES A SAFETY RISK FOR SHADE TREE MECHANICS. THIS PART IS A KNOWN HIGH FAILURE ITEM AND THE WARRANTY HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO 15 YEARS FOR 2011-2013 SONATA, 2011-2014 SONATA HYBRID AND 'CERTAIN' 2011-2014 ELANTRA. THE WARRANTY EXTENSION DOES NOT COVER MY 2013 ELANTRA GT.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE PUMPED THE BRAKE PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE TRAVELLED INTO A DITCH, HIT A FENCE AND CRASHED INTO A METAL POST. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY AS THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE WAS DAMAGED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT NO INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED WHILE DRIVING OVER A SPEED BUMPER AN ABNORMAL NOISE WAS HEARD WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY SERVICED UNDER THREE RECALLS. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 89,000.
THE AIR BAG LIGHT HAD BEEN ILLUMINATING AND STAYING ON FOR A BIT THEN GOING BACK OFF. LAST WEEK IT CAME ON AND HAS STAYED ON. THERE HAS BEEN NO REASON FOR IT TO BE ON.

SHOULD IT FAIL WHILE THE VEHICLE IS MOVING, THEN THE DRIVER'S AIRBAG MAY NOT DEPLOY DURING AN ACCIDENT OR THE SUPPLEMENT RESTRAINT SYSTEM MAY NOT WORK. THE "CLOCKSPRING" PART CONNECTS TO THE SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM.

HOWEVER, HYUNDAI WILL NOT HONER THIS RECALL FOR THE EXACT SAME FAILURE IN THE ELANTRA GT MODELS OF THE SAME YEAR. THESE MODELS UTILIZE THE SAME PART! FAILURE OF THIS PART PREVENTS THE DRIVERS AIRBAG FROM DEPLOYING. THIS IS A MASSIVE SAFETY FAILURE!

THE FRONTAL AND SIDE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY EVEN THOUGH IT WAS A FRONTAL COLLISION. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED A MILD CONCUSSION AND BRUISING TO THE FACE AND UPPER BODY. THE CONTACT WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM VIA AMBULANCE. THE FRONT WINDSHIELD WAS COMPLETELY SMASHED IN TOWARDS THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER. THE PASSENGER WAS NOT INJURED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE INSURANCE COMPANY AND MANUFACTURER WERE CONTACTED. THERE WERE NO RECALLS; HOWEVER, THE AIR BAG INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED PER AN UNKNOWN RECALL REPAIR ON JANUARY 9, 2018. AN UNKNOWN CARMAX DEALER WAS ALSO NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED AND TOWED TO A SCRAP YARD BY THE POLICE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 96,119.

THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON MY 2013 HYUNDAI ELANTRA GT AT THE 61,000 MILE MARK. TOOK IT IN TO THE DEALERSHIP TO FIND OUT THE PROBLEM AND IT WAS DETERMINED THE THE CLOCK SPRING WAS FOUND DEFECTIVE FROM THE MANUFACTURER. THEY WERE WILLING TO REPLACE THE CLOCK SPRING BUT AT A COST OF $495 DOLLARS. I ASKED WHY THEY WERE CHARGING SINCE THIS WAS A MANUFACTURER AND SAFETY PROBLEM AND THEY DETERMINED THAT MY CAR WAS NO LONGER COVERED SINCE I HAD GONE OVER THE 60,000 MILE MARK. I CALLED HYUNDAI USA TO REPORT MY CONCERN FOR THIS SAFETY HAZARD AND ALL THEY TOLD ME WAS THAT THEY COULD NOT COVER IT DUE TO MILEAGE. I AM GREATLY CONCERNED FOR THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY AND SELF KNOWING THAT THE AIRBAG IS DISABLED IF A CAR CRASH WERE TO OCCUR. THIS IS THE ONLY MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION THAT I HAVE AND UNFORTUNATELY CANNOT AFFORD TO PAY FOR SOMETHING THAT IS A SAFETY DEFECT AND HAZARD WHICH I FEEL HYUNDAI SHOULD FIX AT NO COST.

MY EXTENDED WARRANTY ALSO REFUSED TO PAY THE REPAIR. WHEN THE LIGHT IS STAYING ON, IF IN AN ACCIDENT NONE OF THE AIR BAGS WILL DEPLOY. THE CAR ONLY HAS 67,000 MILES. THIS IS A SAFETY PROBLEM AND THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS. I SPOKE WITH THEIR CUSTOMER CARE DEPT, THEY REFUSED TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR. THEIR WAS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON SOME MODELS, BUT THEY SAY MY CAR ISNT ON THE LIST. I HAVE CONTACTED THE BBBAUTO LINE, AND THE MISSOURI STATE ATTY GENERAL. AT NO TIME IS MONEY MORE IMPORTANT THAN CONSUMER SAFETY. I ONLY ASK FOR THEM TO RIGHTFULLY REPAIR MY CAR. THEY ADVERTISE HOW SAFE THEIR CARS ARE AND THERE ARE 6 AIR BAGS. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE INSURANCE COMPANY WAS CURRENTLY INSPECTING THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT CALLED HYUNDAI OF ASHVILLE (860 TUNNEL RD, ASHEVILLE, NC 28805 (828) 298-4911) HOWEVER, THE CONTACT'S INSURANCE COMPANY INSTRUCTED THEM TO NOT CALL THE DEALER. THE DRIVER'S HEAD IMPACTED THE DRIVER'S WINDOW, DUE TO THE FAILURE OF THE SIDE AIRBAG TO DEPLOY, RESULTING IN SIGNIFICANT BRUISING AND A SERIOUS CONCUSSION. THE DRIVER REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION IN THE EMERGENCY ROOM. DRIVER WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A CONCUSSION AND UPON FURTHER CARE A TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY. THE DRIVER HAS SUSTAINED VISION LOSS AND HEARING LOSS/TINNITUS REQUIRING HEARING AIDS. THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED ON A CITY STREET WHILE THE HYUNDAI WAS IN MOTION HEADED STRAIGHT AT APPROXIMATELY 20-25 MPH. THE AT FAULT VEHICLE, A FULL SIZE FORD SUV WAS DRIVING IN EXCESS OF THE SPEED LIMIT AT APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH. THE ACCIDENT WAS WITNESSED BY THE CITY OF PORTLAND FIRE ENGINE COMPANY AND RESCUE TEAM. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. APPROXIMATELY $6,000 IN DAMAGES OCCURRED. DUE TO THE VEHICLE BEING OUTSIDE OF THE 60,000 MILE WARRANTY, THE CONTACT WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR COSTS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 70,000.

I LET THEM KNOW THAT "NONE" OF THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED AND THEY SAID THAT THEY WOULD START A CASE. I ALSO LET THE COMPANY KNOW WHERE THE CAR WAS BEING SENT WHICH WAS A HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP IN TOWN AND ASKED IF THEY WOULD CHECK THE AIRBAGS WHICH "NEVER HAPPENED". MY WIFE WAS TRAVELING AT BETWEEN 60 AND 65 MPH WHEN SHE LOST CONTROL OF HER ELANTRA AND I CAN NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THEY (A) DID NOT CHECK THE AIRBAGS WHEN THE CAR WAS AT A CERTIFIED DEALER/REPAIR SHOP AND (B) WHY THEY ARE TELLING US THAT THE SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAGS WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO DEPLOY IN A ROLLOVER. EVERY AIRBAG IN THE HYUNDAI DEPLOYED, INCLUDING THE BACK SEAT WHICH SEEMED STRANGE SINCE IT WAS A FRONTAL CRASH. THE TRANSMISSION WOULDN'T GO IN TO ANY OTHER GEAR IT WAS STUCK IN DRIVE. THE HOOD WAS SMASHED UP TO THE FRONT WINDSHIELD. THE DAMAGE TO THE CAR WAS OVER $12,000 THERE HAS TO BE SOME FAULTY PART(S) OR EQUIPMENT ON THE CAR TO CAUSE SUCH DAMAGE AT SUCH LOW SPEEDS. DURING MERGE ONTO A MAJOR DALLAS TOLLWAY, TRAFFIC BECAME STOPPED IN THE RIGHT LANE AND UPON APPLYING A HARD BRAKE OF MY CAR, THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES FAILED TO ENGAGE, THE SEATBELT DID NOT LOCK, MY CAR FELT AS THOUGH IT WAS ACCELERATING EVEN THOUGH I WAS PRESSING THE BRAKE PAD HARD. I HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME ONCE AND THEN AGAIN BEFORE MY CAR STOPPED, STILL RUNNING. MY CAR SUSTAINED $8500 IN DAMAGE TO THE FRONT END, BUT THE AIR BAG DID NOT EVEN DEPLOY. I RECENTLY LEASE THE ABOVE VEHICLE FROM LOCAL DEALER UNIVERSAL HYUNDAI IN ORLANDO. AFTER DRIVING A SHORT DISTANCE I REALIZED THAT THE PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT WAS LIT (MEANING OFF) EVEN THOUGH MY WIFE WAS IN IT. I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP WHO HAD ME SPEAK TO A SERVICE ADVISOR (SCOTT). HE TOLD ME THAT I SHOULD BUY A PILLOW SINCE MY WIFE WAS ONLY ABOUT 103 POUNDS IN WEIGHT, AND THAT THERE WERE NO ADJUSTMENTS WHICH COULD BE MADE TO THE SEAT. THIS DID NOT MAKE SENSE TO ME SO I CONTINUED TO MY SALES REP(GEORGE SPENCER). HE HAD THE SERVICE MANAGER (NESTOR DIAS) CONTACT ME AND HE BASICALLY TOLD ME THAT UNDER 150 POUNDS THE AIRBAG WON'T DEPLOY. IF I HAD REALIZED THIS UP FRONT, I WOULD NEVER HAVE LEASED THE ELANTRA. WAS ABOUT 2 TENTHS OF A MILE FROM A STOP SIGN. AS I WAS BEGINNING TO MAKE MY APPROACH, THE CAR ACCELERATED, LURCHED FORWARD AND SPED ACROSS A FOUR LANE HIGHWAY BEFORE I COULD REACT. THE CAR WAS T-BONED ON THE PASSENGERS SIDE. THE IMPACT STRAIGHTENED MY VEHICLES TRAJECTORY FROM 90 DEGREES TO ABOUT 30 TO 45 DEGREES. I THEN IMPACTED A GUARDRAIL WITH A SOMEWHAT NEARLY HEAD-ON ANGLE. AFTER I WENT THROUGH THE GUARDRAIL I THEN IMPACTED A TREE HEAD-ON WHICH BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO A STOP. MY PASSENGER'S SIDE CURTAIN AIR BAGS DEPLOYED BUT THE FRONT (DASH) AIR BAGS DID NOT. MY PASSENGER RECEIVED A BROKEN COLLAR BONE, FRACTURED RIB, SCALP LACERATIONS (STITCHES), A CONCUSSION AND MULTIPLE BRUISES FROM HEAD TO TOE. *TR
