2016 Ford Explorer Other Problems

When accelerating more rapidly (like getting on interstate), a burning smell will enter the cabin. It is not noticed at low speeds, nor when acceleration to high speeds happens gradually. The smell is strong and lingers for about one minute.

The Backup camera stopped working and has a message that says contact dealership. It is blacked out and may cause a crash while reversing. Ford has known issues and already has a recall for 2020-2023.

The car caught on fire driving it to my brother's house to babysit his kids while #4 being born prematurely with complications at southwest ms regional medical center. I lost almost 15,000 in equity and my husband recently passed things inside I can't replace. It was about 11:00 at night and I made a uturn to stop at gas station and truck was already on fire.

All of the moulding, seals & rubber windshield trim/gasket around the windshield has failed. It has cracked, broken off and much is now missing off the vehicle. Now when I drive the vehicle it makes scary noises due to the cracked/missing moulding/seals.

I was driving down Highway 90 in Houston Tx, doing roughly 60 MPH when all of a sudden the drivers side window trim, I believe it's called a pillar, just detached and flew behind the car causing the cars behind me to swerve almost crashing into each other.

The plastic piece on the drivers' side of the windshield was loose and flapping. Before I could get it looked at and fixed, while driving down the highway one morning I heard a noise and in my rearview mirror saw black plastic shattering all over the road.

While driving on any damp/wet/or dirt terrain the rear end of the vehicle will slide side to side even though I am steering normally. Driving in town I have drifted sideways into the other lane of traffic barely avoiding an accident.

For a few months when I would accelerate from a red light or sitting still the smell of rotten eggs would come into my vehicle. With me having kids I figured it was just them passing gas, however repeatedly it started happening & if the a/c or heater was on it was worse.

The rear doors will not open when the car comes to a stop and people want to exit the car; the child lock is not on. The driver has to physically push the unlock button to open all the car doors . The autonation dealership in tustin, ca continues to tell me this is correct!

I have noticed theres a burning smelling from heater/AC vents right after acceleration from vehicle being stopped. I can confirm its a burning smell (similar to burning plastic or rubber). When the smell is present, it feels like theres lack of acceleration from the gas pedal.

Hankook ventus s1 noble 2 tires that are on the explorer are faulty causing the thread to shred. This could have caused my tires to come sort while driving and possible collision & injury. There was only 12,995 miles on them.

I am the owner of a 2016 ford explorer xlt with the foot activation liftgate feature. While loading a large item in the rear cargo area of the parked vehicle, the foot activated closure function was unexpectedly triggered and the liftgate proceeded to close on me. The liftgate did not stop once it hit me.

Was driving on the highway at an high speed and abruptly received a message “power steering failure” the steering wheel locked up. The active recall for the trim only includes the front two trim pillars. There are trim pillars down each window on this vehicle, making that a total of 8 pieces of trim for the windows.

Top pillar on car came off and almost hit vehicle. Ford really did a bad job with the graphics of this vehicle. Just like the pillars on the front of the car now this.

The heater on the car didn't work, It turns out the coolant was leaking that LED to the water pump issue. Things started to fail on the vehicle and lights came on. It left me stranded on the highway.

While driving at 30 MPH on a city street a carbon monoxide detector that I have placed in the third row sounded. I installed the detector after learning that ford was having problems with the explorer. I opened my windows, parked, and checked the detector which was working.

Your car's driver-side B pillar trim piece (the vertical strip between your front and rear doors) has come loose and could potentially detach or blow off while driving at highway speeds. Additionally, your driver-side A pillar trim piece (the vertical strip next to your windshield) has also loosened and poses a similar risk. Both trim pieces should be reattached or replaced to prevent them from becoming projectiles while driving.

the exterior A-piller trim part is missing, having already detached. I have called Ford 3 times and the customer service once. They keep saying for the last year that the parts are not available.

Recall ford # 21S22 roof rack cap. I called ford and reported that the roof rack cap has broken off. They stated that recall for my vehicle has been completed and closed.

The windshield trim on my car is missing. There is a recall on this but there is no remedy yet. With this not being fixed it is causing a safety issue with our car as well as allowing our car to flood inside when it rains.

I went to the dealer, Parsons Ford. The pillar b even has the weather stripping from recall is even detaching. Which they saw and stated its part of the recall.

I was made aware of a recall for my 2016 Ford Explorer Sport involving the Exterior A-Pillar Appliqué molding recall#24S02 and NHTSA# 24V031 I had an inspection done on 12/30/24 and it was determined at that time it needed to be replaced, but parts were not yet available. I have since then regularly checked with the dealership to see if parts were available, but they have not become available.

The water pump has been replaced 3 times within a 2 year period on this vehicle . Something is causing it to fail and the constant leaking of fluid causes the vehicle to drive erratically in highway traffic. The alternator has been replaced twice within a 10 month period.

My B-pillar trim flew off while I was driving down the road. We received a recall letter and got in contact with the Ford dealership where I live. They came out to asses the vehicle and said they would call me when they received the part to be replaced.

I’ve been trying to get the necessary recall repairs completed, but unfortunately, I’ve been unable to locate the required pillars for the repairs. I recently brought my vehicle back to the dealership, but was told that no work can be done until both parts are available.

A-Pillar trim on both sides of my windshield flew off while driving over one year ago. Contacted Ford multiple times and parts are still not available to make the repair under recall 24S02. Ford still does not have parts for 18 months.

Ford has been unable to repair our vehicle for over a YEAR because they say they can't get parts for recall # 25V347. We have contacted multiple Ford dealerships in a 300 mile radius. The outside noise coming from around the windshield area has increased.

A-pillar trim has been under recall since Jan. Ford estimated having the parts "the later half of 2024". Here it is June of 2025 and still no repair.

I’ve had it twice be an issue where the engine didn’t run quite right. The first time I took it to the mechanic it was determined the timing chain was bad and they also said this is a well known issue with the ecoboost engines in these explorers. Only about a year later after replacing that and the water pump I went to start the explorer and it wouldn’t start.

Windshield pillar molding has detached. I have called a local dealer 4 times over the past three months for repairs. Local dealer (Tamiami Ford Naples Florida) states that parts are not available.

The passenger A-pillar applique trim detached from my vehicle while driving down the freeway. The piece that broke off is not available for inspection. The piece flew off while traveling at a higher rate of speed at night.

*Premature water pump failure that is housed in the timing chain chamber and driven by the timing chain. Component is not available for inspection as of this complaint because vehicle is being repaired. *Possible sudden catastrophic engine failure due to water pump failure, which will put safety of driver, passengers, and others at risk.

recall 24s02/24vo31outside pillars. I witnessed it flew of my car while driving nearly hitting another car. I don't understand why the recall is taking an extended time for it to be fixed but its available for you to purchase which is $956.

Waterpump malfunction. Risk puts the user at financial obligation to repair the car as the waterpump is needed for proper function of heater elements and other internal parts. Unsure of if this has been reproduced or confirmed.

Water pump is leaking and needs to replace.

The automatic tailgate in my Explorer Sport accelerates when closing creating a serious amount of force that could kill a small child or even an adult if striking them in the head or neck. I'm shocked that this hasn't been a recall issue for Ford vehicles because of the amount of speed and force this tailgate is generating.

when traveling at highway speed the side fins fly off. I have had them replaced 3 times now at dealership. thank God there was not someone behind me - especially on a motor cycle it could of killed them

I was driving on the highway and heard a loud noise didn’t know what it was until I got home and realized my windshield trim on passenger side was not on there anymore. It had flown off while driving down the highway.

I was driving my 2016 Ford Explorer on I-65 October 19, 2023, in the afternoon. I thought something flew off of one of the two semis in front of me and hit my windshield on two separate times, within a few seconds of each other. When I arrived home, I checked to see if I had any damages, and I was surprised to see pieces missing from the passenger side of my windshield.

While driving on the freeway at about 65mph, the driver side windshield Trim and Rubber Seal detached. The trim moulding flew off completely and the rubber trim began flapping against my driver window. Now I need to look into getting this replaced/repaired.

While driving on Freeway 10 on June 23, 2023 around the Palm Springs area the passenger windshield side panel flew off. There were considerable wind gusts while driving at average traffic speed around 70 MPH. The driver windshield side panel flew off on June 2020 on the same freeway also during wind gusts.

Driving on bridge Tampa Florida when I heard a loud noise and briefly felt like I ran over something. Once at destination, discovered the driver's side panel between windshield and door was missing.

When it rains, somehow water comes into the vehicle and it gets wet. There has been puddles of water in the driver and/or on the passages side. When I took it to a body shop they mentioned that the water leakage could’ve made the heated seats malfunction.

The trim on the passenger side pillar next to the windshield detached and flew off of the vehicle while driving on the highway. The trim piece was not recovered as it is unknown where it landed. There was traffic on the highway behind the vehicle and it could have hit another vehicle or later been run over by another vehicle if it landed on the road.

Out of no where there is a chemical/propane smell. Took it to a ford dealer. They said my water pump is causing it.

There is a VERY STRONG sulfur odor emiting into the cabin without an engine warning light. Tested for error codes and inspected by Ken Towery in Louisville and the seriviceperson couldn't detect the source of the odor. The defect appeared at 98458.

There has not yet been an incident, however, the Ford dealer is not returning any calls or service schedule requests to have the RECALL repairs done, and I am concerned the problems may become worse to the point that there is an incident. Can NHTSA force Ford to get their dealers to prioritize recall repairs?

Hello, this is a issue with the heating and air conditioning. when I turn on the heat I have it set to anything about 75 degrees, the SUV is blowing out cold air. and sometimes the AC turns on blowing air but the light for the AC is not turned on.

Using the FORD PASS ap, I have two recalls for my 2016 Ford Explorer Sport. Recall 21S22 for the roof rack trim detachment and 21N01 for high speed cooling fan motor relay. I use Miracle Ford in Gallatin, TN.

2016 Ford Explorer Sport. Roof rail recall may be the cause for extreme water damage that burned out the sunroof motor, drenched the interior carpet, interior roof material, navigation and charging docks do not work. Ford not acknowledging and states after diagnostic check I have to pay 2600 to replace motor and once sunroof opens they can determine where the water leak is coming from.

I have had NOTHING but issues with this vehicle and have made more calls to complain to ford with no help. as an example I complained for 2 years about this rattle and clunk in my transmission..finally I got the ford dealership in clarion, pa to believe me..here it was the torque converter..after 2 years of complaining and after I got it back...a week later..I get a recall notice from ford!

Exhaust fumes in the cabin. Stated slowly and progressive got worse. Heavy fumes and not safely drivable, ford repair said it was the ptu unit leaking allowing exhaust fumes in the cabin through the air flow system.

Took a quick look up top and my sunroof was closed correctly. I opened the sunroof and poured some water into the channel and water seems to drain down the holes correctly. I also closed the roof all the way and sprayed it with a garden hose, and didnt see any leaking.

I have a 2016 ford explorer with 94,000 miles. We noticed that the AC was blowing hot air so we took the car in for a repair on 9/8/2020. The dealership called us back to inform us that the water pump had failed which caused antifreeze to leak into and on the AC compressor causing it to fail.

The entire air conditioning system has corrosion and rusted completely out. This vehicle is only 4 years old. It should not be rusted beyond repair.

When sitting idle and stationary, a strong odor of rotten eggs/exhaust enter the cabin through the air vents. The car continues to have a strong odor after being turned off. While getting on the freeway emissions come thru the a/c and at times the entire a/c cuts out and a bigger puff of these same emissions comes out again thru the a/c vents...a few weeks ago it started a to hesitate when leaving stop signs or lights...to the point it just stops moving and takes seconds to catch hold .we have had it in service 5 times and the dealership is submitting a claim to the ford tech for an appointment to evaluate the car and go from there waiting for the call now...I feel very threatened with emissions in the cabin of the car .

Rotten egg smell when vehicle is accelerating up incline and air unit is on recirculate. Had in ford dealership before to address problem but obviously still not fixed. Do your job and quit trying to protect ford there needs to be a recall and you know it.

Every time I accelerate or merge or drive with all the windows up, I can smell a engine exhaust/burning type smell. This smell gives me a head ache and makes me feel nauseas. I have already had the 'carbon monoxide concerns' dealer service and this smell has not changed.

There has been a recall on the ford explorer due to exhaust leaking into the cabin. I took my car into the ford dealership to be repaired two months ago and was told everything was fixed. However, for the past few weeks I have noticed that the amount of exhaust in the cabin in the vehicle while driving continues to increase to the point that it is affecting my and my family's health.

I reported this earlier today, but wanted to add to here that I talked to a representative to ford and told him that the car was leaking exhaust into the cab of the car. He advised me to "drive it" to another dealership about 20-30 minutes away. I asked if he was willing to put his child in this car as this is what he is advising me to do.

I recently had a 2015 ford explorer and experienced the odor emitting into the cabin on acceleration. After numerous attempts to correct the issue, with ford, I was forced to let the vehicle go back to the bank out of fear the issue was making me sick. Complaint #1 -paint factory paint finish on vehicle is very poor. Thin paint and primer clearly visible in several areas (see pictures attached). I believe this does not meet specified paint density regulations.

Leather dash is coming unglued near windshield and retracting towards front of dash. This is exposing a white underliner near the windshield and causing a severe glare on windshield. When driving my Explorer feels like the gear is stuck making the vehicle jerk. Very loud at start up from fan. I have taken it to get the code read, I think it stated transmission needed to get checked.

The rear camera is compromised because water gets inside and is blocking the view of the camera. You are unable to use the rear backup camera because the view is completely blocked or blurred by the water or moisture that is able to get in.

Spoke to Maplecrest Ford in Union NJ about the front Pilars recall. Maplecrest ford took pictures of the pilars in September 2024 and told me in January that they will replace them. January became April , Abril became June.

Ford has a recall for the A pillar but my B pillar trim flew off. The other side was loose.

Today while driving on the highway, the windshield trim flew off at a high rate of speed. I am unsure as to which direction it went. The components that were holding it together have also cracked which worries me that it too will fly off.

My side pillar on the passenger side of my 2016 Ford Explorer door came off and I had to buy a new one. Now my A-Pillar on the drivers windshield has come off as I was on the freeway. This is safety issue for me and other drivers who may be struck.

While driving down the highway the passenger side A pillar windshield trim broke in half and flew backwards impacting passenger window. The broken piece of trim remain attached by a rubber seal. At highway speeds this caused the piece to impact the side window many times.

The windshield trim panel on passenger side suddenly flew off while I was driving on the highway. Apparently this is a focus of investigation already (Investigation: PE 23-001).

While driving at highway speed, about 70 MPH, passenger side window pillar trim separated and flew off of a 2016 Ford Explorer Limited. Do not know if part hit other vehicles. Vehicle has approx 78,000 miles.

The gear will not go into Park. I put the gear in Park and the car started to roll. I looked at the dashboard and it said it was in Reverse.

I was traveling on I 95 at around 55 to 60 MPH when all of a sudden, the plastic trim on the side of the windshield the passenger side flew off cracked and started dangling over my passenger side window and mirror. The piece blocked my view of my mirror while I was traveling in the left lane approaching a left exit.

When I was driving at 55 MPH with a 25 MPH crosswind my windshield trim broke apart and got thrown into the on coming lane of traffic because the white retaining tabs holding the trim in broke and then some of trim held because of the attachment of rubber the rubber was torn a bit because of the trim ultimately failing.

Pillar Trim piece next to windshield on the passenger side flew off my car while driving the speed limit of 70 MPH on I-95 in Florida. The part flew off and hit the trailer of a tractor trailer in the neighboring lane. No one was hurt, but it's ridiculous that a trim piece that displayed no signs of damage would just fly off of the vehicle.

right side trim of windshield broke off while driving on highway this past weekend. we heard a crack and then saw the trim flying behind us and then landing in middle of the road. lucky traffic was light and no one was directly behind us.

In 2020 the right windshield trim detached and flew from the car while driving down the interstate. I didn't know what happened and I thought maybe something hit my car. On March 22, 2023, while driving on the interstate, the left side detached and flew off the car into the left lane of the interstate.

The driver windshield trim flew off my 2016 Ford Explorer as I was going down the highway. I saw where this has made the news and wanted my report included in it. Nobody was hurt and I was unable to retrieve the trim.

Both of my roof side rails have come off while driving down the road. This could have seriously harmed another driver behind me. There were no warnings of this.

Rear a/c lines and evaporator damaged due to corrosion from elements. Was told it would cost $2000+ and not covered under warrenty or extended warranty. This is odd because Ford knows its a problem and has issued other recalls for the same reason in the same location (rear) just to different parts.

Tires - all 4 hanook tires dot # 5mnc 1a h (0216) 255/50/r20 treads have been chipping and peeling up resulting in unsafe conditions and excessive wear. These tires are clearly problematic tires and completely worn out at 20,000 miles. Manufacturer is aware if this resulting from new compounds (materials) used in manufacturing.

When sitting in park and placing my foot on the break to place the car in reverse, it does not want to go into gear and there is a delay. Then the car jolts aggressively into reverse. The longer I sit with my foot on the break before engaging out of park into reverse, the longer the delay into gear and the stronger the jolt.

My 2016 ford explorer cabin has been filling with co I purchased a co detector a month ago after feeling sick while driving on multiple occasions. Today the co detector read 15 with no air on. Yesterday it read 18 with air conditioning on.

I have been getting very sick for over the past year and recently realized it is when I go anywhere. Nausea, chills, headache, confusion, weakness, dizziness.I have a 23 month old daughter in the car with me who would be affected by this also. I had no idea that it could be the car making us sick until we looked it up online and saw there was a carbon monoxide issue with this car.

Exhaust smell comes through AC system when ascending uphill at higher RPM. Had in service shop before for this issue but it still exists. Time for you guys to man up and make ford responsible for fixing their crap car.

The car had not yet had the customer satisfaction service for the plugs and seals completed. I had not noted any exhaust odors in the car and had not problems during many all day drives. After an 11 hr drive this week with the AC on the whole time (not on recirculating), I had many symptoms of co exposure (headache, dizzy, nausea) and all 3 of my dogs wer affected (poor appetite, lethargic).

There is a rotten egg smell everytime we accelerate at a high speed when the ecoboost is used. I've taken it to ford to have seals checked and the smell is still there. My toddler complains of headaches everytime we're in the vehicle and I've had nausea several times.

Both horns are dead.

We now drive with windows partially open due to carbon monoxide exhaust gas entering the passenger compartment of our 2016 ford explorer. We are assuming that the exhaust manifolds are the problem.

The last (3) times my son has been in our 2016 ford explorer he has vomited. He is 2.5 years old and we have a daughter on the way in 2-3 weeks. It is just now clicking that this is probably a co2 issue since he is always fine once he gets out of the car.

When driving the car, upon accelerating, even with the circulating air on, the fumes are very strong coming into the cabin of the car. Also, when first starting the car with the a/c on, there is a very sour/stale odor coming from the vents. We made a 2 hour trip, and after being in the car that long, I had a bad headache and felt nauseated from the fumes.

When accelerating to merge onto the highway it smells as if exhaust fumes are entering the cabin. I don't believe this is safe or healthy if in fact I'm breathing exhaust fumes. Please review and advise.

We are experiencing an ongoing smell of exhaust in the cabin of our 2016 ford explorer. The smell is noticeable in different conditions, but two conditions seem to always be in place - when accelerating and when the recirculate option is on.

My stock (unaltered) 2016 ford explorer sport with ecoboost engine emits a rotten egg, sulfur-like odor into the passenger cabin upon full throttle acceleration. This condition does not occur during normal (less than full throttle acceleration) driving. This condition occurs only during full throttle acceleration and is replicable.

Several times when driving two of my children ages 2 and 10 complained of a bad smell coming from the third row seating. They both became strangely ill, but only my 2yo began vomiting. My 10 to complained of being light headed during several long trips.

Above 60 MPH, when accelerating to pass another vehicle or climbing up a grade, if the engine downshifts to a lower gear, a strong exhaust odor enters the cabin. When the vehicle's operation returns to normal, the odor dissipates within about 15 seconds. The entire event is over within a minute.

The 2016 model also has the odor from the ventilation which is investigated now. The odor occurs during driving at regular methods after the engine can heat up for a few miles. This "new car" smell was called regular heating of new parts by the salesman but now it has been 3000 miles and he odor is still happening.
