2016 Ford Explorer Transmission Problems

I have already filed a complaint about the transmission issues of my vehicle a few months ago. Ford will not take credit and help me so we had to keep driving it. Hard shifting, slipping, losing reverse, losing power and jerking into gear.

There has been an ongoing issue with my vehicle since it was last taken to service for a recall. The transmission has premature failure. I have had the entire vehicle powertrain fluids changed and nothing has helped.

The torque converter failed in my explorer while driving, making it act like it was in neutral. Luckily I was on a small road with little traffic, and able to pull over to a side street before my car was complete undrivable. If this happened on the highway or while turning, it probably would have cause a major issue or accident.

The transmission suddenly downshifts causing rapid deceleration, if on the freeway could have caused an accident, the Ford garage could not duplicate the problem, there were no warning lights and no computer codes

The power transfer unit is broken. Symptoms are vehicle shuddering, vehicle sounds like it is going to stall. This could cause a major accident at any moment.

Power Transfer Unit (PTU) exploded cracking the PTU case and Leaking out all gear oil which can be caused by PTU being too close to the exhaust and the PTU overheats from the exhaust heat breaking down the gear oil, this gear oil being over heated and that close to the exhaust could have caught on fire and if I have been on the highway at a high speed it would have caused the vehicle to lose all power going down the highway and in turn we could have been hit and killed due to the immediate loss of power SSM 47993 which has the year make and model of my car already listed on it as well as other ones listed by NHTSA however Ford consumer affairs refuse to do anything or offer any help even though they have acknowledged that there is problems with the PTU in multiple models.

You can smell a sickly metal burning smell in the cabin when accelerating to get onto a freeway.

The Power transfer unit is leaking fluid onto the exhaust and it caught on fire as I pulled into my driveway. I was able to extinguish the fire before any damage was done. There is also a nauseous odor in the cabin of the vehicle that makes me sick, burns my eyes every time I drive my vehicle.

The transmission is constantly slipping. While driving up or down any steeper grades, the RPMs are so high we have to adjust speed to get the transmission to shift properly as to not blow the engine. The SUV surges and shifts hard while going only 15 to 20 MPH on regular pavement.

My husband was driving to work and lost drive power and the underneath of the SUV was on fire, my husband pulled over ad called 911. The dealer stated the ptu cracked from pressure leaking all the oil onto the exhaust. Also stated all of my tires were good ..

The vehicle began to overheat when driving at an incline. As soon as the vehicle was level there were no overheating issues. I took the vehicle to the dealership and was advised that the vehicle was overheating due to the grill shutters being stuck closed and as a result the transmission was failing and needed a partial rebuild.

Required a new transmission. Reported initial problem at 58,000 miles the dealer could not find a problem while car was still under warranty. Car was experiencing a hesitation during acceleration.

Problem first appeared on june 3, 2016 with about 10,000 miles. I was driving on interstate 95 past philadelphia airport about 9:30 am at about 60 MPH. The vehicle had been driven from a cold start for about 20 minutes.

It jolts, lunges, transmission doesn't engage and slams into gear hard it makes you feel you got rear ended with a big bank. Slow to accelerate and when it finally does it lunges

When keeping a steady speed, rpms fluctuate up and down causing a jerky movement while driving. Happens randomly or after idling for a few minutes. Also, power decreases during this event, so when taking off, car doesn't want to accelerate, then lurches forward.

On 6/28/2016 the vehicle was involved in a loss of control accident due to driver becoming unconscious. The driver and all passengers became unconscious nearly simultaneously. The original assumption was that the driver fell asleep, although she did not remember feeling drowsy prior to the accident.

The transmission drain plugs were loose. The vehicle has 5064 miles. I had been noticing an odor and thought I had a coolant leak.

Driving down road and explorer started losing power, cutting out and engine almost died. The check engine light and tool light came on display. I was barely a few hundred feet from my house, so I slowly managed to get vehicle to my driveway.

My pregnant wife and I were driving down a busy, main nashville road yesterday when our 2016 ford explorer with 8500 miles on it ceased to accelerate. A wrench appeared on the dashboard, rpms dropped to an idle state, and in heavy traffic I could not accelerate in order to move my car off the road, nearly causing an wreck. Ford has had my car for two days.

I was driving close to my house and almost caused a big accident while I had my children on board. The car stopped completely ( suddenly stopped) and lost power, I was lucky that not accident occurred ( can u imagine if I was in the miami expressway and that happened). Water pump failed at 80,000 miles and cause the car to stall mid intersection putting out life at risk. This is a known issue that should be recalled . Not to mention the repair is $4,000-$6,000 mostly labor to fix.

Whenever putting the vehicle into reverse there will be a loud pop and will slam into gear. Similarly will happen when shifted into drive. Then when changing gears from second to third the vehicle will hesitate switching gears and the RPM will go into the 5000 RPM.

Within 10 days of buying it brand new I've had electrical problems. Replaced back up screen within those 10 days even though they didn't find anything wrong. Still continues.

This truck has had issues since I bought it like 5 months ago from carmax within that time I really only had it a month rest of time it has been in the shop I bought with 26k miles from carmax already had rebuilt engine breaks roaders still have engine issues now today belt broke and needs to be towed I should not have to have do many issues with a new truck not mention if you do not shut the trunk hard it will drain the battery since it keeps the lights on in the truck already had to replace the battery.

I was driving up a hill when the vehicle lurched forward and then lost power. I was able to just make it to the top of the hill. I pulled over put it park and then put it in drive and was able drive home.

My family and I were at a a gas station about to get on the freeway when my ford explorer started to stall. I pulled to the side and turned it off and back on. This action seemed to fix the problem; however, after that day (4 months ago) the ford explorer has been stalling every time I start it and start to pull out of my drive way.

With the cruise control set at ~78 MPH on an interstate highway the automatic transmission appeared to shift into a low gear causing the vehicle to suddenly decelerate and the engine to rev to match the set speed. The vehicle decelerated from 78 to about 40 as if I had slammed on the brakes.

The engine will stall and the car will buck/shake and almost die when put into drive after sitting overnight or for several hours takes 1-2 minutes to jerk/shake and then will run fine. Twice the wrench icon has come on in the dash. We have taken it to the dealership 3 times now to be fixed.

Same issue as NHTSA id number: 11042260. At 7,000 miles when the vehicle goes into reverse we hear a loud thumping sound as though you ran over something. This is happens more when reversing with a turn than straight but seldom while backing straight out as well.

While driving the vehicle in heavy traffic on a city street I lost power. The vehicle would not shift into gear. When I parked the vehicle it would not go in reverse.

1st incident june 2016: during a busy school commute. On a very busy road, the vehicle lost power. Would not accelerate past approx.

As I was on my way to work on june 28, as I was driving straight on a major street, approximately 50 MPH, when my 2016 ford explorer began to decelerate. At 70 MPH on I-4, the electronic throttle body failed, dropping the engine to idle speed. The engine would not come out of idle, and had to be towed to the dealership. The part failed at 6,300 miles, less than 2,000 miles after the car's first dealership servicing.

Driving home from work in my 2 month old 2016 ford explorer with 1900 miles on it and was merging into freeway traffic when there was a sudden loss of power. Was pushing on the gas pedal and could hear the engine but the speed of my car was stalled at 35 MPH and a wrench light and engine light came on. Was able to safely get off the freeway and into a gas station where I called for a tow.

The transmission shifts with a harsh jerk for no apparent reason and is an intermittent not constant problem. Also when stopped at an intersection refuses to engage to power the vehicle forward for a short time 5+ second time period.

In the very cold weather, I would have to dress in extra warm layers and keep the windows lowered with fresh air flowing through - in order to drive it...
