TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 DODGE JOURNEY. WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND ALL OF THE CYLINDERS CEASED IN THE ENGINE. THE CHECK ENGINE AND TIRE AIR PRESSURE INDICATORS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 161,414.

CAR STARTED SHAKING VIOLENTLY, STOPPED AT A TIRE COMPANY(BAYARD TIRE IN BAYARD FLORIDA) AND TECH SAID LEFT REAR TIRE BELTS WERE BROKEN. THIS IS THE FIFTH KUMHO TIRE THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO. I HAD THE FRONT 2 REPLACED IN APRIL OF 2012 (39000) AND THE REARS REPLACED IN SEPT. OF 2012(40000) NOW THE LEFT REAR TIRE HAS DONE THE SAME THING AT 55000 MILES. THIS COULD CAUSE A MAJOR ACCIDENT IF IT WOULD HAVE BLOWN OUT. *TR

WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM LOCAL GROCERY STORE, REAR DRIVERS SIDE TIRE SUDDENLY BECAME FLAT. I WAS ABLE PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. WHEN MY HUSBAND ARRIVED TO HELP, HE ATTEMPTED TO PUT IN SOME "FIX A FLAT" TO GET ME TO THE TIRE STORE LESS THAN 2 MILES AWAY AND THE VALVE STEM WENT COMPLETELY INSIDE AND ALL AIR WAS RELEASED FROM TIRE. HE PUT ON THE SPARE AND WE TOOK THE TIRE TO THE TIRE STORE AND HAD TO PURCHASE A NEW VALVE STEM WITH SENSOR IN IT. AGAIN, DODGE IS PUTTING FAULTY EQUIPMENT INTO THEIR CARS AND NOT ACKNOWLEDGING OBVIOUS FLAWS IN THEIR VEHICLES. WHILE TRAVELING 70 MPH FROM DETROIT TO OHIO WITH THREE 13 YEAR OLD BOYS IN MY CAR. THE FRONT PASSENGER TIRE WAS EXTREMELY LOW. I WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT TO A SERVICE STATION. WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO PUT AIR IN THE TIRE, THE VALVE BROKE, RELEASING ALL AIR IN THE TIRE. I CONTACT ROAD SERVICE THROUGH MY INSURANCE AND THEY PUT THE SPARE ON. I THEN TRAVELED TO FIRESTONE IN SANDUSKY, OH, WHERE I WAS TOLD THAT THE TIRE COULD NOT BE REPAIRED. UNFORTUNATELY, THEY DID NOT HAVE MY TIRE IN STOCK AS IT IS A 19" KUHMO. THEY WERE ABLE TO FIND ONE TIRE 100 MILES FROM WHERE I WAS IN CLEVELAND. SO OFF I WENT TO CLEVELAND, WHERE I SPENT $289 TO REPLACE A TIRE THAT WAS BARELY 10 MONTHS OLD DUE TO THE FAULTY VALVE. TODAY I CONTACTED [XXX] AT SUBURBAN CJD OF TROY AND WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE VALVES. NOT ACCEPTABLE. I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED ALONG WITH THE TREE TEENAGE PASSENGERS THAT I HAD IN MY CAR. PLEASE ADVISE AS TO HOW I SHOULD PROCEED. THE VEHICLE KEEPS OVERHEATING. I'VE ADDED COOLANT. THERE DOESN'T SEEM TO BE A LEAKAGE STAIN IN THE GARAGE OR DRIVEWAY. IT HAPPENED YESTERDAY AFTER LEAVING THE OFFICE FOR LUNCH. I BARELY MADE IT HOME BEFORE THE JOURNEY COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN. I ALLOWED THE ENGINE TO COOL OFF, ADDED COOLANT, AND IT WOULDN'T RESTART. I TOOK A DIFFERENT CAR BACK TO WORK AND WAS ABLE TO START THE JOURNEY UPON RETURNING HOME. I LET IT SIT OVERNIGHT AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP THIS MORNING. HOWEVER, UPON DRIVING 15 MINUTES DURING LUNCH TODAY, IT OVERHEATS AGAIN. THE RED WARNING LIGHT APPEARED AND THE DING SOUNDED. THE JOURNEY COASTED INTO MY OFFICE PARKING SPOT WHERE IT WILL STAY UNTIL I LEAVE THIS EVENING. HOPEFULLY, AFTER ADDING MORE COOLANT, I'LL AT LEAST BE ABLE TO MAKE IT HOME. THE VALVE STEMS ON MY 2009 DODGE JOURNEY CRACKED CAUSING THE STEM TO FLY OUT OF THE TIRE. THIS CAUSES THE TIRE TO INSTANTLY GO FLAT, WHICH IN TURN MAKES THE VEHICLE DIFFICULT TO CONTROL. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME TWICE. BOTH TIMES I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO CONTROL THE CAR AND GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. IF I HAD BEEN IN ANY OTHER LANE I MOST LIKELY WOULD HAVE VEERED INTO ANOTHER LANE OR IN FRONT OF ANOTHER CAR. I HAD TO FIX THE OTHER TWO TIRES AS WELL AS THEY WERE ALSO CRACKED. THIS IS APPARENTLY A PROBLEM THAT DEALERS/MECHANICS ARE AWARE OF. DODGE IS ALSO AWARE. THEY HAVE SINCE CHANGED THE WAY THE VALVES WERE MADE. THEY ARE NOW SOME TYPE OF PLASTIC. THE CONSUMER HOWEVER IS NOT AWARE UNTIL SOMETHING GOES WRONG. IN BOTH CASES AN ACCIDENT COULD HAVE EASILY HAPPENED. AGAIN, I WAS LUCKY. BY DOING RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET I HAVE FOUND IT HAPPENS TO 2009 AND 2010 VEHICLES. I HAVE CONTACTED DODGE AND ALL I GOT WE'RE APOLOGIES. IF I LOST MY LIFE OR MY CHILDREN AN APOLOGY WOULDN'T BRING ANYONE BACK. THE PUBLIC NEEDS TO BE AWARE OF THIS ISSUE BEFORE SOMETHING TERRIBLE HAPPENS. WHEN THE STEM BLOWS OUT OF THE TIRE THE AIR LOSS IS INSTANTANEOUS. THERE IS NO WARNING JUST LOSS OF CONTROL OVER THE VEHICLE. TIRE IS WORN , WENT FOR OIL CHANGE , TIRE AT ALMOST DANGEROUS LEVEL , THIS IS SECOND TIRE TO WEAR THROUGH IN A YEAR . I WAS TOLD THESE TIRES HAVE TERRIBLE WEAR LIFE. I CAN ONLY GET THEM AT DEALERSHIP AND THEY ARE EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE . IF YOU ARE PUTTING SUCH A HIGH PRICE TAG ON THESE TIRES THEN IMPROVE THEM. I AM ON DISABILITY AND THIS IS A BIG HIT. I WAS TRAVELING A LOCAL HIGHWAY ABOUT 65 MPH WHEN THE VALVE STEM AND PRESSURE SENSOR CAME LOOSE AND FELL INTO THE TIRE ON THE RIGHT REAR TIRE. I MANAGED TO GET THE CAR STOPPED SAFELY AFTER LOOSING CONTROL. AFTER READING A DODGE FORUM ON-LINE. THE GENERAL IDEA IS THAT THIS 2009 DODGE JOURNEY PRESSURE SENSOR IS POORLY DESIGNED. ALL 4 TIRES REPLACED 11/15/2012. ORDERED BRAND NEW KUMHO TIRES, HAD THEM MOUNTED, BALANCED AND SECURED WITH RH WARRANTY. IMMEDIATELY NOTICED THEY WERE MORE NOISY THAN THE TIRES THAT WERE ON JOURNEY BEFORE REPLACEMENT 11/15/2012. SLIGHT SHIMMY AND HUMMING NOISE. NOVEMBER 2012 - TOOK VEHICLE BACK TO SERVICE CENTER THAT MOUNTED TIRES. EXPLAINED ISSUE(S), OWNER TOLD SERVICE CENTER POSSIBLE BAD TIRE(S), REQUESTED TIRE INSPECTION. NO RESULTS FOUND. SERVICE CENTER ASKED OWNER TO DRIVE ON TIRES FOR 2/3 DAYS TO SEE IF SHIMMY IS COMING FROM FRONT OR REAR END. OWNER COMPLETED REQUESTED ACTION BY SERVICE CENTER, REPORTED SHIMMY COMING FROM REAR END AND REQUESTED ADDITIONAL INSPECTION OF TIRES. SERVICE CENTER "SAYS" THEY INSPECTED AGAIN AND FOUND NOTHING. DECEMBER -2012 OWNER RETURNED TO SERVICE CENTER FOR THIRD TIME TO REQUEST ROTATE & BALANCED. SERVICE CENTER ONCE AGAIN "SAYS" THEY ROTATED, BALANCED AND CHECKED TIRES AND FOUND NOTHING WRONG. SHIMMY AND HUMMING NOISE NOW COMPLETELY LOCATED IN FRONT OF VEHICLE. 04/21/2013 FRONT RIGHT BRAKE CALIPER AND PAD NEEDS REPLACED. CALIPER DRAGGING AND SMOKING. WHEN FRONT RIGHT TIRE WAS REMOVED TO REPLACE CALIPER TIRE WAS WOBBLY AND WOULD NOT STAND ON ITS OWN OR ROLL ON FLOOR "NORMALLY". NO OTHER TIRES WERE INSPECTED 4/21/2013. OWNER PLANS TO RETURN TO SERVICE CENTER WHERE TIRES WERE PURCHASED/MOUNTED TO REQUEST ANOTHER INSPECTION AND REPLACEMENT. *TR

TRAVELING AT 60MPH ON WEST BOUND M-59 HIGHWAY, IN MICHIGAN, WHEN ALL AIR PRESSURE LOST OUT OF RT. REAR TIRE. MANAGED TO GET CAR STOPPED IN FRONT OF A BELLE TIRE STORE. HAD THEM TAKE CAR IN FOR REPAIRS AND THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS JUST ONE MORE FAILURE, DUE TO ROAD SALT, OF THE ALUMINUM VALVE STEM ON A CHRYSLER TPMS AIR PRESSURE SENDING UNIT. THEY ADVISED ME TO REPLACE UNIT ON ALL FOUR WHEELS BECAUSE THEY WOULD SOON BE FAILING. I REPLACED TWO OF THEM AT A COST OF $65 EACH BECAUSE THAT WAS ALL THAT I COULD AFFORD. THEY SAID THAT IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM AND SHOWED ME A BUSHEL OF DEFECTIVE CHRYSLER (SIEMENS) UNITS. SINCE ONLY THE VALVE STEMS ARE BAD, AND EASY TO REPLACE, I LOOKED FOR REPLACEMENTS ON THE INTERNET BUT FOUND NONE. TOO BAD THAT THEY MAKE YOU BUY A $65 PART OVER THE FAILURE OF A $1 PART. AFTER EXPERIENCING COMPLETE RIGHT FRONT TIRE FAILURE WHILE TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH ON A PAVED TWO-LANE HIGHWAY, OWNER INSTALLED THE TEMPORARY SPARE TIRE. THE VEHICLE'S AWD LIGHT IMMEDIATELY ILLUMINATED. OWNER CEASED OPERATING THE VEHICLE AND OBTAINED THE SERVICES OF A TOW COMPANY. APPARENTLY, THIS VEHICLE CANNOT BE DRIVEN WITH THE SPARE TIRE SUPPLIED BY THE MANUFACTURER AS THE AWD! LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE OWNER'S MANUAL STATES THE VEHICLE SHOULD BE SERVICED RIGHT AWAY WHEN THE AWD! LIGHT ILLUMINATES. THERE IS NO CAVEAT STATEMENT REGARDING DRIVING TO A CLOSE LOCATION FOR LIMITED MILEAGE. MOREOVER, THE MANUAL STATES THE PTO UNIT (AKA AWD! UNIT) WILL BE DAMAGED IF THE CAR IS DRIVEN WITH THE AWD! LIGHT ILLUMINATED. DRIVING WITH THE SUPPLIED TEMPORARY SPARE CAUSED THE AWD! LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE. ADDITIONALLY, IF THE CAR IS DRIVEN WITH THE TEMPORARY SPARE INSTALLED AND THE AWD! LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND DAMAGE TO THE PTO OCCURS, IS THIS DAMAGE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY? IF THE SPARE IS TOO SMALL, AS IS THE CASE VIA VISUAL INSPECTION, WHY IS THAT SPARE TIRE SUPPLIED WITH THE VEHICLE? SHOULDN'T AN ACCEPTABLE SPARE BE MADE AVAILABLE, OR A CAVEAT STATEMENT REGARDING DRIVING ON THE TEMPORARY SPARE FOR LIMITED MILEAGE BE SUPPLIED, SO THE DRIVER/OWNER IS NOT STRANDED? WHEN I WENT TO A AUTHORIZED DEALER TO PURCHASE A NEW TIRE, I FOUND THAT THEY DO NOT STOCK A SINGLE TIRE OF THE TYPE AUTHORIZED BY THE VEHICLE MANUFACTURER PER WARRENTY SPECIFICATION. I HAD TO DRIVE ON THE FREEWAY AT NIGHT WITH A SKINNY EMERGENCY TIRE INSTALLED FOR OVER 100 MILES. I FELT VERY UNSAFE AND NERVOUS BEING PLACED IN THIS SITUATION. *TR

ON THE FIRST INCIDENT, THE RIGHT DRIVER SIDE TIRE SUDDENLY WENT FLAT. VALVE ROTTED, THAT TIRE WAS FIXABLE. WE QUESTIONED THE COLD WEATHER. WE FIGURED IT WAS A FLUKE. ON JULY 15, 2012 REAR DRIVER SIDE TIRE SUDDENLY WENT FLAT WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH - WARM WEATHER - BROUGHT IT TO A TIRE COMPANY AND THEY STATED THE VALVE ROTTED ON THIS TIRE AS WELL AND THAT THE TIRE WAS UNREPAIRABLE. BOTH TIMES OUR 3 AND 6 YEAR OLD CHILDREN WERE IN THE CAR WITH US- THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE. I KNOW ANOTHER PERSON THAT RECENTLY OWNED A DODGE JOURNEY AND HAD A BLOW OUT - THEY ENDED UP ACROSS THE ROAD AND DOWN THE BANK. LUCKILY NO INJURIES. I DON'T THINK THIS IS A COINCIDENCE. THIS COULD RESULT IN BODILY INJURY. THE VALVES ON THESE CARS NEED TO BE ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY. TODAY I AM SPENDING $1325 TO REPLACE ALL 4 TIRES AND RIMS SO THAT MYSELF AND MY CHILDREN DO NOT END UP IN A FATALITY. *TR

I AM A LICENSED COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA CERTIFIED STATE INSPECTION MECHANIC. I JUST ENCOUNTERED A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION WITH A CUSTOMERS 2009 DODGE JOURNEY AWD VEHICLE TODAY, JULY 14, 2012. I WANTED TO BRING THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF THE PROPER AUTHORITY, WITH THE HOPE THAT THIS COULD BE INVESTIGATED IN DETAIL TO PREVENT A POTENTIAL FATALITY OR A NUMBER OF THEM.TODAY A REGULAR CUSTOMER OF MINE, ARRIVED AT MY FACILITY WITH A FLAT TIRE, AFTER FURTHER INSPECTION; I NOTICED THE VALVE STEM WAS MISSING ( ON THE 2009 JOURNEY AND MANY NEW VEHICLES THIS IS A " TPMS" - TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR SENSOR) THE CUSTOMER WAS DRIVING AT APPROX. 30 MPH AND NOTICED THE LIGHT COME UP ON THE DASH AND WITHIN SECONDS HER TIRE WAS FLAT, NOTHING WAS HIT, NO JOLT, NO WARNING, JUST POOF, THE TIRE WENT FLAT. LUCKILY SHE WAS DRIVING AT A LOW RATE OF SPEED ON A RURAL ROADWAY AND WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE AND EXIT TO SAFETY WITH HER CHILDREN. ONCE I DISMOUNTED THE TIRE, I FOUND THE TPMS ON THE INSIDE OF THE TIRE LEAVING JUST A HOLE IN THE RIM, HENCE THE LOSS OF AIR PRESSURE. THE THREADS ON THE TPMS WERE COVERED WITH OXIDATION AND NO RETAINING NUT WAS FOUND,THE STEM WAS NOT BROKEN, ALTERED OR VANDALIZED, IT JUST CAME UNATTACHED. THE THREADS WERE OXIDIZED SO BADLY THAT ANOTHER RETAINER COULD NOT BE THREADED ON, SO I REPLACED THE TPMS WITH A NEW ONE. AFTER INSTALLING THAT TIRE, I WENT TO TEST THE AIR PRESSURE IN THE OTHER FRONT TIRE, AS I GENTLY PLACED THE PRESSURE GAUGE ON THE TPMS VALVE STEM TO CHECK THE PRESSURE, POOF THAT TPMS WENT RIGHT THRU THE RIM; THE RETAINING NUT SHATTERED AND BROKE INTO PIECES, QUICKLY CAUSING A MASSIVE AND RAPID LOSS OF PRESSURE.IT IS MY OPINION THAT, HAD THE VEHICLE BEEN TRAVELING FASTER, A VEHICLE OWNER WOULD BE LEFT IN A VERY BAD SITUATION, PERHAPS CAUSING A LOSS OF CONTROL AND A POTENTIAL FATALITY. ON APRIL 28, 2009 I HAVE A TIRE FAILURE WHILE DRIVING AN A WELL MAINTAINED PAVED HIGHWAY. SPECIFICALLY, I HAD A SIDEWALL FAILURE ON MY RIGHT REAR TIRE. UPON EXAMINATION OF THE TIRE I FOUND A "V" SHAPED FAILURE IN THE SIDEWALL OF ABOUT ONE HALF INCH. CLOSER EXAMINATION REVEALED THAT THE CHORDS IN THE TIRE WERE FRAYED AS OPPOSED TO BEING CUT CLEANLY. DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF APRIL 2011, I EXPERIENCED ANOTHER SIDEWALL FAILURE WITH THE SAME "V" SHAPED BREAK WHILE TRAVELING ON A WELL MAINTAINED PAVED HIGHWAY. I DECIDED AT THAT TIME TO REPLACE ALL FOUR TIRES WITH OME TIRES AND I KEPT THE REMAINING THREE GOOD TIRES. IN FEBRUARY, 2012, I EXPERIENCED A THIRD SIDEWALL FAILURE WITH THE SAME "V" SHAPED RUPTURE IN THE SIDEWALL OF THE LEFT FRONT TIRE. MY MILEAGE AT THIS TIME WAS APPROXIMATELY 40500. THE REPLACEMENT TIRE THAT WAS INSTALLED WAS FROM THE ORIGINAL OME TIRES THAT I HAD KEPT WHEN I REPLACED AFTER THE SECOND FAILURE. APPROXIMATELY 3 MONTHS LATER THAT REPLACEMENT TIRE DEVELOPED A BULGE ON THE OUTSIDE TREAD AREA OF APPROXIMATELY 12" LONG BY 2" WIDE. I THEN REPLACED ALL FOURS AGAIN WITH ANOTHER BRAND. LIKE I SAID THIS HAS BEEN A CONSISTENT ISSUE SINCE I DROVE MY CAR OFF THE LOT IN 2008 AND STILL HASN'T BEEN RESOLVED AND NOW THEY ARE TELLING ME I SHOULD JUST BUY NEW TIRES. I UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS ALMOST TIME FOR NEW TIRES BUT I FEEL THAT CENSOR AND DEFLATION IN MY TIRES SHOULD HAVE BEEN RESOLVED A LONG TIME AGO. BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE I HAVE SPENT MANY HRS IN THE REPAIR WAITING FOR THEM TO TRY TO FIGURE OUT THE ISSUE 3-5 HRS EACH TIME.BECAUSE THEY HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO RESOLVE I WILL NEVER BUY A DODGE VEHICLE AGAIN. TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM ON 2009 DODGE JOURNEY. VALVE STEMS HAVE METAL THREADS AT END THAT WERE BROKEN PRIOR TO PURCHASE OF VEHICLE. DEALER WORKING TO REPLACE, BUT HAVE BEEN TOLD THERE IS A LARGE NUMBER (APPROX. 20,000 ON BACK ORDER) AND IT IS UNKNOWN WHEN PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE. APPARENTLY, THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AFFECTING CHRYSLER/DODGE VEHICLES. I CURRENTLY HAVE THREE TIRES THAT I CAN CHECK AIR AND ADD AIR AS NECESSARY, BUT DIFFICULT WITH BROKEN VALVE STEMS. ON THE FOURTH TIRE, THE THREADS ARE COMPLETELY BROKEN AND MISSING MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO CHECK AIR PRESSURE OR ADD AIR. THE TIRE MONITORING SYSTEM CONTINUALLY WARNS OF LOW AIR PRESSURE - DEALER SAYS IT IS A MALFUNCTION AND TO IGNORE. PARTS AVAILABILITY IS AN UNKNOWN. WHEN HE STOPPED FOR GAS, HE NOTICED THAT THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE TIRE WAS BULGE FROM THE INSIDE OUT. HE PAID TO REPLACE ALL FOUR TIRES BECAUSE HIS WIFE FEARED THAT THE OTHER THREE WOULD EXPERIENCE THE SAME FAILURE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 4,900 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 3,439.
