STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST:HOSE, PIPING, AND CONNECTIONS

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2009-2016 Dodge Journey vehicles manufactured July 31, 2007, to November 12, 2016. After exposure to cold temperatures, the power steering return hose may rupture at engine start-up causing a loss of power steering assist.

Fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the power steering return hoses, steel tubes, and power steering oil cooler, free of charge. The recall began on May 24, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S08.

Upon inspection, the contact noticed that there was a cracked power steering hose located underneath the vehicle. The contact replaced the power steering hose; however, the failure recurred. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BATTERY WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT STATED SHE WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO HER RESIDENCE WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF AND FAILED TO RESTART. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THERE WAS NO POWER STEERING FLUID IN THE RESERVOIR. NEITHER THE DEALER NOR MANUFACTURER WERE MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 194,000.

MY WIFE DRIVE THIS VEHICLE MOSTLY TO WORK AND I AM AFRAID FOR HER TO DRIVE ANYMORE I HAD TO REPLACE THE BRAKE CALIBRES THEY LOCK UP AND THEN I END UP REPLACING THE ROEDER AND THE BRAKE PADS THEY ARE ALSO THE POWER STEERING PUMP I HAD TO REPLACE AND THE HOSES FOR IT HAS BUSTED A FEW TIMES.I HAVE LUCKILY BEEN THE ONE DRIVING WHEN IT HAS DONE ANY OF THOSE THINGS. I'M AFRAID OF MY WIFE TO DRIVE IT ANYMORE. IT IS HER CAR.I OWN A DODGE DAKOTA AND LOVE IT,BUT THE JOURNEY IS A TERRIBLE MADE VEHICLE. I BOUGHT THIS DODGE JOURNEY SXT LAST YR 2/16/2018, I ASKED THE SALESMAN IF THERE'S ANY RECALLS OR ANYTHING WRONG WITH THIS CAR.. HE SAID ONLY NEED TO REPLACE THE REAR TIRES.. I CONTACTED A LEMON LAW LAWYER THE NEXT DAY AFTER GETTING THE TIRES REPLACED BC HE LIED TO ME, THE TIE ROD & BALL JOINT HAD TO BE REPLACED, ON TOP OF THAT I FOUND OUT THERE ARE (4) RECALLS ON MY CAR THAT WERE NEVER TAKEN CARE OF, SO DODGE CHYRSLER DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE FRONT/BACK AIRBAGS IN (MAR/APRIL)OF YEAR 2018.. I RECEIVED THE RECALLS TO MY PHONE, TO TOP THAT OFF I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE IN CASH OVER ($4,263.00), THE LEMON LAW LAWYER TOLD ME TO GO TO A WEBSITE TO GET THE HISTORY ON MY CAR I BOUGHT, IT WAS INVOLVED IN A CAR ACCIDENT ON PASSENGER SIDE ON (10/18/2017).. I WAS LIED TO TOTALLY, I ALMOST GOT REAR ENDED BC THE TRANSMISSION STOPPED ON ME, MY SISTER RAISED $$ TO GET TRANSMISSION REPLACED, NOW HAD TO PUT NEW BRAKES/NEW BATTERY/NEW STARTER/ANOTHER NEW TIRE/ THEN THE HUB ASSEMBLY BROKE ALONG WITH THE SWAY BAR ARM, THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IS FAULTY & CAR STARTS BUT THEN IF I GO ANYWHERE & THEN TRY TO START TO GO HOME, IT WON'T START & THE FOB KEY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AS WELL.. THIS CAR IS A SAFETY HAZARD, TOO MANY PROBLEMS THAT SHOULDN'T BE HAPPENING..IT HAS STOPPED ON ME TOO MANY TIMES TO COUNT, I'M AT THEE POINT I AFRAID TO DRIVE IT.. OTHER 09 DODHE JOURNEYS HAVE BEEN RECALLED, BUT MINE, SXT AWD WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL ACCORDING TO THE VIN NUMBER. I FEEL IT SHOULD BE AND THE HOSE IS STILL CURRENTLY BROKEN. I AM ON A FIXED INCOME AND THIS NEEDS TO BE FIXED BY CHRYSLER INSTEAD OF OUT OF MY POCKET. IT IS HIGHER MILEAGE AND THE MOTOR IS NOT THE ORIGINAL BUT THAT SHOULD NOT MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO ME. THE TOTAL BILL WAS 383.17. IT'S FUNNY THERE IS A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE WITH THIS YEAR AND MODEL YET MINE ISN'T RECALLED. I HAVE HAD THIS ISSUES SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR USED IN 2013. EVERY YEAR WHEN IT GETS COLD OUT I START THE VEHICLE AND THE LINE BURST LEAKING POWER STEERING FLUID EVERYWHERE. I HAVE NOT HAD THE MONEY TO REPLACE THE LINES AND THIS HAS BEEN HAPPING FOR 5 YEARS NOW. THIS HAS NOW CREATED A SEAL ON THE POWER STEERING PUMP TO LEAK AS WELL. NOW I HAVE POWER STEERING FLUID ALL OVER MY ENTIRE ENGINE BECAUSE OF THE PUMP LEAKING EVERYWHERE. I CALLED DODGE AND THEY WERE NOT HELPFUL TOLD ME IT'S A VIN SPECIFIC ISSUE AND THERE IS NOTHING THAT THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT WHEN I'M CLEARLY HAVING THE SAME EXACT ISSUE. PLEASE HELP!!

THE MANUFACTURER INDICATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS EXCLUDED FROM THE UNKNOWN ABS AND BRAKE SYSTEM RECALLS AND HAD NOT PROVIDED AN ELECTRICAL SOLUTION TO THE DEALER. THE FAILURE THAT OCCURRED ON FEB 12,2016. PUT THE LIFE OF MY CHILD AND MYSELF IN EMINENT DANGER. WHILE TRAVELING 70 MPH IN THE HIGH SPEED LANE, WITH MODERATE TRAFFIC ON THE HIGHWAY, THE CAR SUDDEN SHUT OFF. THE DASHBOARD WENT BLACK, THE ENGINE STALLED AND THE CAR BECAME ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO DRIVE. NOT ONE INDICATOR LIGHT ON THE INSIDE OR THE OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE WORKED, I REACHED FOR HAZARD LIGHTS THAT DID NOT RESPOND, THE GAS PEDAL WAS UNRESPONSIVE. THE STEERING WAS SLOW AND HARD TO USE- POWER STEERING WAS NOT AVAILABLE. BRAKES SEEMED SLOW TO RESPOND. I KNOW FOR CERTAIN HAD I COLLIDED WITH ANY ITEM THE AIRBAGS WOULD ABSOLUTELY WITHOUT A DOUBT NOT DEPLOYED. THE CAR HAD SIMPLY DECIDED TO "SHUT OFF", I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL HOPING TO CONTINUE ROLLING FORWARD DOWN THE HIGHWAY WITH TRAFFIC. I WAS ABLE TO MUSCLE THE CAR TO SAFETY ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I PLACED THE CAR IN PARK , AND TURNED THE IGNITION TO THE OFF POSITION. AFTER SEVERAL MINUTES OF CALMING MYSELF AND MY DAUGHTER DOWN I RESTARTED THE CAR. IT STARTED, HOWEVER NOW EVERY LIGHT THAT CAN ILLUMINATE ON THE DASH, THE WIPERS, DAY TIME RUNNING LIGHTS, RADIO, AND DOOR CHIMES IN A 30-40 SECOND REPEATING PATTERN. THE DASHBOARD INDICATES THAT THE CAR IS IN PARK, REVERSE, NEUTRAL, AND ALL FORMS OF DRIVE AT THE SAME TIME. THE SPEEDOMETER, RPM GAUGE, GAS GAUGE , OIL PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE GAUGE BOUNCE FROM THE MINIMUM TO THE MAXIMUM DURING THE CYCLE. THE CAR HAS CLEARLY HAD A EXTENSIVE ELECTRICAL FAILURE- THE "MAIN COMPUTER" - AS I DONT KNOW THE EXACT COMPONENT THAT HAS FAILED IS NO LONGER ABLE TO DETERMINE WHATS GOING ON. THERE WERE OTHER THINGS WE WERE TAKING CARE OF WITH THE DEALERSHIP AND AT THE TIME THIS WAS NOT OF PRIORITY, FAST FORWARD ROUGHLY 2-3 WEEKS THE SHAKING GOT WORSE AND WORSE AND THE DRIVING OF THE VEHICLE BECAME UNCONTROLLABLE, APPLYING THE BRAKE BECAME DANGEROUS AND IT BECAME OBVIOUS THAT IT WOULD SOON LEAD TO CATASTROPHIC RESULTS. WE RETURNED TO THE DEALERSHIP TO WHICH WE LEFT THE VEHICLE AND RETURNED HOURS LATER, THEY SAID THEY HAD TO CHANGE THE BRAKES AND ROTORS AND IT WAS A HEARD OF PROBLEM WITH THAT VEHICLE, THEY SAID IT WAS FREE OF CHARGE THAT TIME SINCE IT WAS LESS THEN A MONTH OF PURCHASE BUT IF IT OCCURRED AGAIN WE WOULD HAVE TO COVER ALL CHARGES, FAST FORWARD 4 MONTHS AND THE SHAKING STARTED AGAIN WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKE. IT IS BECOMING UNSAFE ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE TRAVELING AT HIGH SPEEDS (INTERSTATE, ETC) IT IS BECOMING UNRELIABLE AS TO WHAT IT WILL DO, I HAVE TWO SMALL CHILDREN TO CARE FOR AND THE RISK THE VEHICLE CONTINUES TO PUT US THROUGH IS RIDICULOUS. UPON INTERNET SEARCHES I LEARNED THIS IS A FREQUENT PROBLEM AND A VERY WELL KNOWN BY DODGE PROBLEM WITH 2009 AND 2010 DODGE JOURNEYS YET NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO PERMANENTLY FIX THE PROBLEM I CAN'T AFFORD TO CHANGE THE BRAKES AND ROTORS EVERY FEW MONTHS JUST SO I CAN SIMPLY CONTROL MY STEERING WHEEL/VEHICLE, THIS PROBLEM WILL INEVITABLY CAUSE A CAR CRASH IF NOT WITH MY DODGE JOURNEY THEN WITH ANOTHER, LIVES ARE BEING PUT AT RISK AND SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE. I WAS DRIVING AND THE LOW TIRE PRESSURE INDICATOR CAME ON. I PULLED OVER TO A PARKING LOT AND PROCEEDED TO ADD AIR TO THE TIRE USING AN AIR PUMP. AFTER FILLING THE TIRE WITH AIR AND ATTEMPTING TO DISLODGE THE AIR PUMP HOSE. THE END OF THE TIRE STEM BROKE OFF INSIDE OF THE TIRE PRESSURE GAUGE CAUSING THE TIRE TO DEFLATE COMPLETELY. I NOTICED THAT THE TIRE STEM LOOKED CORRODED, AND I IMMEDIATELY GOOGLED THE PROBLEM WITH THIS TIRE STEM AND LEARNED THAT THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS WHERE THE TIRE STEMS ON THE VEHICLE CORRODE (WHICH MINE DID EXACTLY) AND THEN BREAK OFF WHILE MOST ARE DRIVING. IN ADDITION TO THIS PROBLEM THE VEHICLE ANTIFREEZE RESERVOIR'S CRACK CAUSING THE ANTIFREEZE TO LEAK OUT ON A CONSTANT BASIS. THIS TOO IS A ITEM WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED LONG AGO. I WAS ABLE TO JUST MAKE IT TO A GAS STATION AND WENT TO FILL UP MY TIRE AND MY VALVE STEM WENT ALL THE WAY IN AND MY TIRE WENT TOTALLY FLAT AND LOST ALL PRESSURE. MY CAR HAD TO BE TOWED AND ENDED UP SPENDING $300 TO GET MY FRONT PASSENGER AND REAR PASSENGER SIDE VALVE STEMS REPLACED. THE SERVICE GUY AGREED THAT IT WAS UNSAFE AND I COULD OF EASILY SPUN OUT IF I LOST ALL TIRE PRESSURE RIGHT AWAY. I HAVE 2 KIDS AND I FEEL UNSAFE TO DRIVE WITH MY CHILDREN IN THE CAR. THEY SAID TO BRING IN ON MONDAY, 11-1-10. ON THE EVENING OF 10-31-10 I NOTICED DRIPPING COMING FROM THE CAR ON MY GARAGE FLOOR. I WAS ABLE TO PUT A PAN UNDERNEATH AND TAKE TO DEALER MONDAY MORNING. AT THE DEALER 11-1-10, I WAS TOLD THIS FLUID WS "GEAR FLUID." SEVEN HOURS LATER I PHONED DEALER AND WAS TOLD THEY HAD TO ORDER A PTU SEAL. PLEASE, PLEASE GOOGLE OR SEARCH YOUR SITE FOR PTU ISSUES ON THIS CAR. THERE HAVE BEEN FIRES CAUSED, ENGINE FAILURES, ETC. EVEN AFTER THE PTU SEAL HAS BEEN REPLACED IT DOES NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. WITHIN A FEW WEEKS IT APPEARS THAT WHEN THIS INITIAL SEAL IS BREACHED, IT DAMAGES THE OTHER SEALS, WHICH IN TURN CAUSES PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION AND BRAKING SYSTEM. ALSO, NOTEWORTHY, I JUST HAD TO HAVE MY BRAKES AND ROTORS REPLACED AT 18,000 DUE TO THE "TURNING BLUE." AND NOW, AFTER THAT WORK MY STEERING WHEEL SHAKES VIOLENTLY, WHICH THE DEALER CAN'T SEEM TO FIGURE OUT WHY. I AM ALSO FILING A COMPLAINT WITH CONSUMER AFFAIRS, THE ATTORNEY GENERALS OFFICE (MARYLAND) AND MOST LIKELY WILL BE GETTING A LAWYER. THE DODGE JOURNEY IS A SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM FOR OUR ROADS. *TR

I PURCHASED A 2009 DODGE JOURNEY IN MAY OF 2009. WITHIN A MONTH OF THE PURCHASE, I HAD THE BRAKES AND ROTORS REPLACED. SINCE THEN, I HAVE COMPLAINED NUMEROUS TIMES ABOUT THE BRAKES PULSATING WHEN APPLIED AND THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKING. THIS HAS BEEN A SAFETY ISSUE SINCE THE PURCHASE OF THE CAR. I HAVE ALL THE DOCUMENTS TO SHOW WHERE I HAVE COMPLAINED TO THE DEALERSHIP. NOW THEY ARE SAYING THE BRAKES ARE NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY AND I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR ANY SERVICE DONE TO THE BRAKES. I AM NOT UNDERSTANDING WHY I SHOULD HAVE TO COME OUT OF MY POCKET WITH THIS EXPENSE WHEN I HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. THAT CAUSES THE CAR TO JUMP FORWARD, THE IMMEDIATE LOSS OF ACCURATE STEERING AND A BURNING SMELL THROUGHOUT THE CAR INTERIOR WE SUFFERED THE MOST RECENT EPISODE, WITHOUT NOTICE, WHILE DRIVING THROUGH RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC AT 7:45 A.M. WE WAITED TWO HOURS FOR A TOW TRUCK TO ARRIVE. FORTUNATELY, MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER WERE ONLY SHAKEN, BUT NOT INJURED. IN THE LAST THREE MONTHS, WE HAVE HAD AN UNSAFE REAR TIRE REPLACED, SUNROOF PARTS REPLACED FOR CONSTANT LEAKING, A NEW ELECTRONIC MODULE INSTALLED TO PREVENT THE EPISODES OF THE ENTIRE ELECTRONIC SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONING CAUSING THE LOSS OF CAR FUNCTION AND DOOR LOCKS AND MULTIPLE POWER STEERING PARTS REPLACED. *TR

ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR IDENTICAL FAILURES. THE TIRES WERE REPLACED; HOWEVER, THERE WAS NO RESOLUTION TO THE MALFUNCTIONS. ALSO, THE FUEL GAUGE DOES NOT OPERATE PROPERLY. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED CORRECTLY FOR THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 3,235.
