2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Steering Problems

Issue is based off of this service bulletin, but GM has failed to call a recall on this for coverage. I was driving my daughter to softball practice. Every few minutes there would be a "stabilitrak" message showing on the driving information area.

GM's own number for this recall is 18289. These are for the 2015 Silverado’s . The 2017 Silverado 1500 are doing the same thing as the recall from above describes .

Service Power Steering message comes on and off at random time. Almost got into a accident a couple of times. One example is I was getting off the freeway and the exit made a U shape turn.

While turning steering wheelat low speeds. The steering wheel will jerk out of your hand and lose power. All the electrical power on the dash will go out for a few seconds and return the steering will return.

I bought my 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 certified pre owned on 11/04/2019 shortly after I purchased it I started having problems with it. From brakes to lights. An took it in for the recall on brakes and steering.

While attempting to turn left at an intersection, the power steering locked up after about 2 inches of turn on the wheel. I was forced to abruptly brake. Tried again, still wouldn't turn.

While making low speed turns the power assist fails, momentarily resulting in extreme difficulty turning/maneuvering. This happens no matter what type of road surface is being driven on (paved, unpaved) and does not happen all the time resulting in situations where I have momentary loss of control.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2017 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. WHILE DRIVING 15 MPH, THE CONTACT LOST CONTROL OF THE STEERING WHEEL. THE VEHICLE SLID AND CRASHED INTO A CURB. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT EXITED THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE HAD DETACHED AND ROLLED AWAY. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED NECK AND BACK INJURIES, WHICH DID NOT REQUIRE MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A BODY SHOP. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT ASSOCIATED THE FAILURE WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V256000 (SUSPENSION). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 29,000.

STEERING COLUMN FAILURE CAUSING SLOW SPEED ACCIDENT IN PARKING LOT AND INVOLVING LOSS OF STEERING AND IMPACT WITH LAMP POST. VEHICLE DAMAGE TO BUMPER AND DRIVER SIDE FRONT FENDER BUT NOT INVOLVING FRONT DRIVER SIDE WHEEL, SO STEERING COLUMN FAILURE COULD NOT HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY INCIDENT. VEHICLE THEN HAD NO STEERING CONTROL AND IS UNDRIVEABLE.

Tl* a police officer reported that the contact owned a 2017 chevrolet silverado. The officer stated that while the driver was traveling at an unknown speed, the front driver and passenger side air bags deployed without warning. While continuing to drive, the steering seized.

Electronic power steering suddenly and without warning shut off and I was unable to steer resulting in a vehicle collision and injuries requiring surgery. The vehicle was in motion when the eps shut off.

Engine shuts down on its own causing steering wheel to jerk and almost locks preventing control. Has been doing this for three weeks and is now getting much worse. Seems to do when making slow speed sharp turn.

While turning vehicle at slow speeds the trailer warning,no trailer on vehicle, stability control hill assist radio and steering stop working as well as vehicle will stall out. Depending on when it happens it may stall while turning into traffic. I have searched the issue and found there is a ground problem under dash near windshield.

Complete loss of electrical system power and engine power, vehicle stalls and Coast to a stop. This has happened seven different times in the last 4000 miles driven. Possibly due to faulty ground connection electric power steering system and or stabilitrak I don't know but it is very dangerous.

Power steering (EPS) quit working out of nowhere. I was out camping in Idaho. The power steering issue caused my battery to die and I was essentially stranded.

I lost power steering, power breaks, all dash lights/power and I believe air bags. The truck is available for inspection. The first time I was traveling at 65mph in moderate traffic, it was very difficult to pull over to safety.

I am the owner of a 2017 Chevy Silverado with a little under 50000 miles. I have had an issue with the computer system occasionally re-booting while driving. Also, on occasion, I will get a warning on my display for "trailer braking system" for a fraction of a second.

Two separate occasions with no warning when the vehicle's steering wheel was turned to the left, while in motion, would stop during the turn and jerk back the opposite direction and power to the vehicle would be lost for a second then have power restored.

I was driving the vehicle and the power steering went out temporarily at an intersection when attempting to make a left turn. The issue went away but then a month later the same issue happened again when turning right into a driveway except this time the truck completely stalled and went powerless.

Power assist is working intermittently. On august 14th at 5: p.m, I turned on my vehicle and before I placed it into reverse, I noticed that the power assist notice came on and steering was nearly locked, very hard to steer. I had the vehicle towed and the service department indicated yesterday that it was working fine and then today they said it locked on them too.

Al these lights came on out of no where one cold day. Steering assist, ABS, break. Also service trailer brake, service stabilitrak.

The steering assistance reduced light came on the dash and the vehicle steering became stiff like there was no power steering. I turned my vehicle off and restarted the vehicle and the light came on again, but this time the steering was normal. Now the light is on at all times.

While driving on ca 395 north with snowy conditions, I exited to the viewing overlook. At a low speed and my steering locked up. I could not force the wheel to move in any direction but lucky I rolled to a stop in the turn out.

When driving all gauges go to zero, truck doesn’t illuminate which gear it’s in, warning lights come on (service 4WD, service stabilitrak, service traction control, reduced power steering, service traction control, service trailer brake system ).

What happens is my "ABS light" comes on and when I pull into the driveway... the truck shuts everything off. Locks the wheel!!!

The Stabilitrak system is malfunctioning on my vehicle. It does it intermittently but can be available for inspection. When the stabilitrak system malfunctions, the vehicle will either shut down completely while driving, violently jerk the wheel to one side, or it shorts out the system for brief seconds while driving.

Stabilitrac service light comes on and dash lights flicker for a second, radio sound cuts out a second, then power steering is lost until putting in park or restart of vehicle. Just like recalls for other silverado 1500s. Happens intermittently.

The contact stated that after coming to a complete stop at a red traffic light and attempting to turn the steering wheel in either direction, the steering wheel would forcefully jerk to the opposite direction and the dashboard instrument panel would blink off and the message “Stabilizer" was displayed.

My vehicle has 30,000 miles. About 200 miles ago noticed a clicking while turning the vehicle it has increased in noise and occurance and happens while turning right to left. In park or driving.

Twice on starting the vehicle the steering (the column unlocked)would not steer. It was impossible to turn the column no matter if I move it forward or reverse. No amount of twisting would allow it to steer.

I receive many error lights every time I drive my 2017 silverado. Lights include stabilitrack and traction control disabled, trailer brake systems service, and power steering diminished. The safety complaint is due to the power steering actually shutting down and a sharp loss in engine power and hard shifting.

I lost my power steering and the dealership says I need a new pcm part number 19417067. Very unsafe for a vehicle of three years and less than 30,000 miles

While driving, warning message on dic comes on and say power steering needs service. Power steering completely fails. Truck becomes very difficult to steer.

It happens intermittently.. As I slow up to a speed under 10 miles an hour, as soon as I turn the steering wheel, the vehicle will lose power, either turning off and on fast the dash will lose power but the motor will still be running... Sherry this happens, the steering feels like theres resistance turning and the only way to fix it is to turn off the vehicle and let it sit.

The steering wheel vibrates at around 65 MPH. It feels like you are rolling over rumble strips. The dealership balanced the tires, but the vibration continues.

TRUCK MAKES A CLICKING SOUND WHEN TURNING AT VERY SLOW SPEEDS OR WHEN STOPPED AND TURNING THE WHEEL.

I BOUGHT MY 2017 CHEVROLET SILVERADO ON OCTOBER 2017. NOT EVEN ONE MONTH AFTER PURCHASED I HAD TO BRING BACK THE VEHICLE DUE TO LOUD CLUNKING NOISES AND JERKING. I HAD TO BRING THE TRUCK IN AT LEAST 3-4 TIMES A YEAR DUE TO THE SAME PROBLEM.

Truck was dropped off at the dealership, for loss and sticking of power steering. They completed some tests replaced a part and did a full test drive. I picked up the truck, drove halfway home barely made it complete loss of power steering again.

For no apparent reason the stabilitrack service indicator will activate in a variety of settings, ie low speed on a road, high speed on an interstate, parked in a parking, etc.

The vehicle was taken to weber chevrolet creve coeur (12015 olive blvd, creve coeur, mo 63141, (314) 567-3300) where it was diagnosed that the steering rack and steering box needed to be replaced.

Steering was dangerous. Pulled to left . Took to dealer where purchased.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 chevrolet silverado. The contact stated that while driving at 70 MPH, the vehicle veered to the left independently. The contact stated that the failure occurred on numerous occasions and that the vehicle veered left into another lane.

I am requesting that dot NHTSA investigate the extreme wobble/vibration/shake on new 2017 chevrolet silverado 1500. The vehicle was purchased new and driven under 55 MPH for the first 500 miles. After the first 500 miles and beginning to drive highway speeds, between 60 - 75+ miles per hour, a wobble/vibration/shake began to occur.

Steering Assist is Reduced Drive with Care.

Brakes fail at low speed forward and reverse.

When driving the truck it has a continus pull to the right side

Dear NHTSA, The truck has lost electrical power several times over the past few months but only 3 times while driving.

While turning a corner at a reduced speed the Power Steering went out and I couldn’t turn the wheel to the right. I almost ran into a car pulling out of the street I was turning into. a few seconds later the Power Steering came back on.

Was driving down the road at 65 and the truck shut down completely and had control of steering that time. Put truck in neutral and it restarted. Then was in a gas station getting gas then went to pull out after filling up and the wheels jerked and almost broke my wrist the instrument cluster said stibilatrac and shut down.

Hello so I have a 2017 silverado 1500 And I was driving on the highway a 70 miles by hour with my enclosed trailer and the steering wheel start getting hard and I slow down and tried to get out the highway so when I tried to turn to my right the steering wheel make a clicked couple time like getting locked, so was hard and scary because I can't turned it This is the 3rd time that happens to me !!

While turning out of a parking space. I went into reverse, when I tried to turn the steering wheel it turned the other direction. The dash went dim, stabilitrac message came on the information display and the truck completely shut off.

Lost all communication to transmission control module, electronic brake control module, trailer brake control module, broken can bus wiring, lost windows, can NOT DRIVE!

Warning on dash servive power steering

While driving at low speeds the power to the shuts off and seconds later turns back on. This happened multiple times while in slow traffic and turing into a parking lot. When the power shuts off I lost the ability to steer and brake.

Driving down the road and power steering goes out when I hit a bump in the road. Comes back in when turn of the vehicle and turn it back on almost through me in the ditch a number of times. Just losses all power steering all at once.

I was driving down a city street at around 35mph, steering got real stiff, and the steering wheel wouldn't move back to center, shortly afterwards all power steering assist went off. Was able to get to safety but things would've been a lot worse if there was traffic.

While traveling down the road at different speeds, the steering wheel will rapidly jerk and then I lose all power steering. Took it to a mechanic, I was told there was a malfunction code of c0545, which is a power steering torque sensor malfunction and that the power steering control module needed to be reprogrammed and updated.

While driving down the road, the power steering will go out and I lose all power steering. The steering wheel jerks rapidly while traveling down the road. Took it to a mechanic.

Inner sidewall of front tires are rubbing on upper control arms...tires are michelin stock size...no modifications...
