Component: SUSPENSION:REAR
General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2012-2013 Buick Regal, 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, and 2010-2013 Buick Lacrosse vehicles sold or ever registered in Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, or Wisconsin. These vehicles may have rear toe links that received excessive electrocoating (e-coat) corrosion protection, which could cause the e-coat to become brittle and break away when contacted by road debris. Over time, the e-coat may chip away, exposing the metal toe link and making it more susceptible to corrosion. Corrosion may eventually cause the toe link to thin and ultimately to fracture.
Risk: A rear toe link fracture may reduce the driver's ability to control the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear suspension toe links and adjuster fasteners free of charge. Parts are not currently available. Owners were mailed an interim notification on January 27, 2021, and April 15, 2021. A third notification was mailed on August 19, 201. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is N202308930.

Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 915)
Electrical System →4 issues
While driving at 55 MPH, your car displayed a "Service Battery Charging System" warning and the battery light came on. At the same time, you lost power steering assist (making the steering wheel hard to turn), the brakes didn't respond as expected, and warning messages appeared for Stabilitrak and ABS. Your headlights shut off, the dashboard went dark, and the engine stalled. A mechanic found that your alternator was only producing 11 volts instead of the normal 13 volts, and determined that both the alternator and the Generator Control Module needed replacement to restore proper charging and vehicle function.

Your car is losing its battery charge gradually, and you're seeing a 'Service Charging System' warning light on the dashboard along with a check engine light. Your engine has stalled or failed to start, and you've noticed a burning or melting smell, possibly with smoke coming from the trunk. While there's a known recall for the generator control module on 2013 Eco eAssist models for these exact symptoms, your vehicle's VIN wasn't included in that recall despite experiencing the same issues.

Your car's battery kept draining repeatedly, and eventually the car wouldn't start at all. When you opened up the alternator (the component that charges the battery), you found it had failed. You're concerned that your vehicle wasn't included in a recall for the generator control module. The fix will likely involve replacing the alternator and possibly the battery, and potentially addressing the generator control module.

Air Bags →2 issues
Your car was involved in a high-speed crash at 60+ mph where it hit a metal guardrail, spun around, and struck a concrete bridge barrier. Despite the severity of the impact, the driver-side airbags did not deploy when they should have. This is a serious safety defect that needs immediate investigation by a dealer.

Steering,electrical System,engine →2 issues
Your car is stalling and shutting off while driving, and the power steering is locking up. Your battery keeps draining even after replacement, and the engine is overheating. Your navigation system and radio have also stopped working. Multiple diagnostic machines haven't identified the problem, though the symptoms match a known defect in the general control module that affects some 2013 Chevy Malibus. The dealership acknowledges the recall exists for other vehicles but says your car isn't covered and you'd have to pay out-of-pocket if that's the issue. Fixing this likely involves diagnosing and potentially replacing the general control module or related electrical components.

Your power steering intermittently locks up without warning, and you sometimes can't remove the key from the ignition. Your car also loses its time and date settings, and frequently won't start. Your mechanic has run diagnostic scans and checked your battery and alternator—both are fine—and even cleaned ground wires, but the problem only happens intermittently and disappears when the car is at the shop, making it difficult to diagnose.

Your serpentine belt detached while you were driving, with no warning lights to alert you beforehand. Even after a mechanic reinstalled it, the belt detached again. The serpentine belt may need to be replaced with a new one, or the pulleys and tensioner that hold it in place may need adjustment or replacement.

Suspension,electrical System,engine →1 issue
Your 2013 Malibu has experienced multiple serious problems: the engine stalls and power steering fails at highway speeds, the instrument cluster (speedometer and warning lights) went completely dark, and a federal safety recall for the rear suspension was never performed. The dealer is charging $1,900 just to diagnose these issues, including work that should be covered under a free recall. Your car has been undrivable since the electrical system failed in January 2026.

Suspension →1 issue
While driving at 25 MPH on the highway, you heard a high-pitched sound and temporarily lost control of your vehicle before regaining it. After restarting, the vehicle became inoperable. A mechanic found a rusted toe link and a fractured trailing arm. This suspension failure may be related to a known safety recall affecting Malibu suspension components.

Electrical System,unknown Or Other,engine →1 issue
Your check engine light came on, and while driving, your engine shuts down and loses power, requiring you to restart it—sometimes restarting doesn't even help. You also noticed your ABS and StabiliTrak warning lights illuminated, and your anti-lock brake system stopped working. This combination of issues suggests an electrical or sensor problem affecting your engine and braking systems, and a mechanic will need to scan your engine codes and inspect your brake system to identify the root cause.

Steering,electrical System,service Brakes →1 issue
While driving, your car suddenly lost electrical power and stalled, leaving you without power steering or brakes. You noticed the battery terminals were extremely hot under the hood. An independent mechanic couldn't identify the cause. The issue may involve a failing alternator, damaged battery cables, or a faulty battery that's causing an electrical system breakdown.

Steering,electrical System,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your car's electrical system intermittently fails without warning, causing your radio to shut off, dashboard gauges to go blank, headlights to flicker, and turn signals to disappear. You may also experience loss of power steering, engine stalling or shutting off at stops, and warning messages like 'Service Theft' and 'No Key Detected.' In some cases, the engine continues running after you turn it off and produces a burnt smell. This likely requires a comprehensive electrical system diagnostic to identify and repair the failing component, which could be related to the battery, alternator, or main electrical connections.

Steering,electrical System,vehicle Speed Control →1 issue
Your car is experiencing repeated complete loss of electrical power, causing the dashboard and infotainment system to go black. This has been happening since 2019 and recurs about once or twice a month, most recently in September 2025. An independent mechanic identified a manufacturer defect in the fuse box near the battery as the cause, and Chevrolet's service department was unable to fix it even after keeping the car for over a month. When your car loses electrical power while driving, you also lose power steering and vehicle controls, creating a serious safety risk.

Electrical System,engine →1 issue
Your car failed a smog test due to a battery pack malfunction that's causing your alternator to fail and drain the battery, leading to stalling and unexpected engine shutoff. A technician warned this could potentially cause a fire in the backseat or trunk area. You've found that recalls exist for your vehicle's year, make, and model for this exact issue, but your specific VIN isn't showing the recall in the system. Getting your vehicle checked by a dealership and ensuring any applicable recalls are applied should resolve this issue.

Power Train,electrical System →1 issue
Your hybrid powertrain isn't working properly. After leaving the car unused for about a week and a half, the issue returned even though it was supposedly repaired. The problem might involve the generator control module or the generator itself.

Power Train,unknown Or Other,engine →1 issue
Your 2013 Malibu has an engine defect that GM classified as a "special coverage campaign" rather than a recall, which has made it harder to get repairs covered and obtain a loaner vehicle while yours is being fixed. You've been without your car since August 2021, and despite bringing it to the dealer in June 2025, the repair remains unresolved after a week. The fix will likely involve GM-authorized engine repairs covered under their special coverage program, and you may need to escalate your case with GM directly to request a loaner vehicle during the repair period.

Unknown Or Other →1 issue
The sliding knob that opens the hidden compartment behind your radio has melted and is leaving black residue on your hands and dashboard. This appears to be a widespread issue affecting multiple vehicles. Fixing this will likely require replacing the entire compartment assembly since replacement knobs aren't readily available separately.
