Your serpentine belt detached while you were driving, with no warning lights to alert you beforehand. Even after a mechanic reinstalled it, the belt detached again. The serpentine belt may need to be replaced with a new one, or the pulleys and tensioner that hold it in place may need adjustment or replacement.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a failure with the engine. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact owned a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 65 MPH and his son another vehicle behind made him aware of sparks seen coming from underneath the front of the vehicle. The contact stated that smoke was seen coming from underneath the hood and exit the highway. The contact stated that soon after exiting the vehicle, it caught fire. The check engine and loss of power steering warning lights were illuminated. The fire department extinguished the flames and informed the contact that the origin of the fire came from the engine compartment. Both a fire department and police report were filed. The vehicle remained at an out-of-state junkyard. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The approximate failure mileage was 119,000.

FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS MY CAR HAS BEEN CONSISTENTLY BURNING OIL BETWEEN OIL CHANGES TO THE POINT WHERE THERE IS LESS THAN A QUART IN THE ENGINE. AS OF APRIL 2020 I HAVE HAD TO ADD APPROXIMATELY TWO QUARTS OF OIL EACH WEEK IN BETWEEN THE OIL CHANGES IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN A PROPER LEVEL OF OIL IN THE ENGINE. MY MECHANIC REPLACED A SOLENOID BECAUSE THERE WAS A CODE SAYING IT NEEDED REPLACED IN APRIL. THE ENGINE LIGHT DOES NOT COME ONE, HOWEVER THE ENGINE WILL CLICK OR KNOCK LOUDLY AFTER DRIVING IT APPROXIMATELY 60 MILES AFTER ADDING OIL TO IT. MY MECHANIC STATED THIS IS AN ONGOING ISSUE WITH THE 2013 CHEVY MALIBU ECO. I AM AWARE OF SEVERAL PEOPLE WHO HAD THIS SAME ISSUE AND EVENTUALLY HAD TO REPLACE THEIR ENGINE AT THEIR COST. ALL OWNERS OF 2012-2014 CHEVY ECO MALIBU.I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THE CHEVY DEALER IN MY TOWN THAT THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE TO GM AND YET THEY WILL NOT ISSUE A RECALL NOR COVER THE COST OF ENGINE REPLACEMENT. (THIS ISSUE ALSO HAPPENED WITH HYANDUI SONATA'S AND HYUNDAI DID REPLACE THE ENGINES FOR THOSE WITH THIS ISSUE OF BURNING OIL AT AN ACCELERATED RATE.

EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION REGARDING THE ECOTEC 2.4L ENGINE (LUK). I HAD PURCHASED MY VEHICLE IN SEPTEMBER OF 2018 WITH 87,932 MILES. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED AND SERVICED. PRIOR TO REACHING THE RECOMMENDED 7500 MILE OIL CHANGE INTERVAL AND BEFORE THE 'CHANGE OIL SOON' NOTIFICATION, MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A CERTIFIED GM DEALERSHIP TO BE DIAGNOSED ON DECEMBER 14TH 2018. IT WAS NOTED THE VEHICLE WAS 3 QUARTS LOW ON OIL AT 94,530 MILES. I CONTINUED TO MONITOR THE OIL LEVELS THERE AFTER UNTIL MY NEXT SERVICING AT 97,063 MILES, AGAIN THE OIL WAS LOW BUT WITHIN MARGIN AS I HAD TOPPED OFF AS NEEDED. NOW WITH MY VEHICLE AT 100,134 MILES AND STILL LOSING OIL I AM CONCERNED THAT THE ENGINE IS PLAGUED BY THE SAME PROBLEM AS FOUND IN THE 2.4L (LEA) FOUND IN THE EQUINOX AND GMC TERRAIN. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THERE WAS A MANUFACTURERS DEFECT WITH THE PISTON RINGS COMBINED WITH THE OIL SPRAY COOLING THAT LEAD TO GM ISSUING A SPECIAL WARRANTY COVERAGE TO THE LEA VARIANT HOWEVER NO COVERAGE WAS EXTENDED TO THE LUK VARIANT. IT IS ALSO TO MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THERE IS NO DISCERNIBLE DIFFERENCE INTERNALLY BETWEEN BOTH VARIANTS WITH THE LUK ENGINE SLIGHTLY MODIFIED TO SUPPORT THE (BAS) BELT ALTERNATOR STARTER MILD HYBRID DRIVETRAIN. BOTH STILL CONTAIN THE SAME PISTONS, PISTON RINGS, AND OIL JET SPRAY TECHNOLOGIES. THE CONTACT DROVE ONTO THE EMERGENCY LANE IN ORDER TO COOL THE ENGINE AND THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AND TO BE REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 29,083.

2013 CHEVY MALIBU 1LS MANUFACTURED 11/20/12, CURRENTLY LESS THAN 7,000 MI. 1) CHROME & RADIO GLASS - WHEN SUN SHINES ON CONSOLE IT BLINDS DRIVER & DRIVER MUST COVER AREA WITH A SCARF OR JACKET; CONSOLE IS BEAUTIFUL TO LOOK AT, BUT NOT PRACTICAL FROM A SAFETY VIEWPOINT SINCE THE DRIVER IS BLINDED & CANNOT SEE UNTIL THE AREA IS COVERED FROM THE SUN. 2) WHEN AIR CONDITIONING WAS TURNED ON, A BLAST OF VERY HOT AIR CAME OUT; IT TOOK A COUPLE OF TIMES OF TURNING THE SETTINGS OFF & ON (AT LEAST 60 SECONDS OR LONGER) BEFORE THE HOT AIR STOPPED & THE AIR CONDITIONING CAME ON. THE HOT AIR COULD NOT BE IMMEDIATELY TURNED OFF. HAPPENED ONLY ONCE. 3) PASSENGER SIDE FRONT FENDER/BUMPER LOOSE - MAKES NOISE, CAN POP IT BACK IN, BUT ON HOT DAYS, IT POPS OUT, VIBRATES AND MAKES LOUD NOISE UNTIL POPPED BACK IN. 4) REAR WINDOWS - WHEN DOWN 1/2, 3/4 OR FULLY, VIBRATES, MAKES VERY LOUD NOISE THAT SOUNDS LIKE TIRES ARE COMING APART, CAUSING DRIVER TO IMMEDIATELY PULL OVER TO CHECK TIRES, THE DISTRACTION & BEING ON SIDE OF ROAD COULD BE A SAFETY ISSUE. 5) NO SPARE TIRE - UNABLE TO LOCATE A TIRE & RIM (OR DONUT TIRE) FOR PURCHASE TO INSERT IN TRUNK TIRE AREA. NO CAN OF GOOP, ALSO GOOP ONLY LASTS FOR 6 MONTHS & MUST BE DISCARDED & NEW CAN PURCHASED. NOT GOOD WHEN STRANDED IN INCLEMENT SNOWY WEATHER OR OUT IN THE HOT DESERT & MUST WAIT FOR TOW TRUCK. GM REPLACED MY GENERATOR CONTROL MODULE ON JUNE 13 BECAUSE OF A RECALL. THE PROPER TESTS WERE NOT PERFORMED DUE TO THEM HAVING IT IN SHOP FOR 45 MINUTES (SEE RECALL DOCUMENTS). GCM WAS REPLACED AND I WAS SENT HOME WITH IT ON JUNE 13. ON JUNE 14, I STARTED THE CAR AND AN ERROR CODE APPEARED ON DIC FOR BATTERY. CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY ADVISED ME TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP (OVER 1 HOURS AWAY FROM MY HOUSE). EVERY SO OFTEN MY DIC WOULD SHOW A NEW ERROR CODE, I CONTACTED DEALERSHIP EACH TIME, I WAS ADVISED TO CONTINUE TO TRAVEL. I MADE IT 40 MINUTES INTO MY TRAVEL AND I HEARD A LOUD CLUNK. A FEW SECONDS LATER ALL THE ERROR CODES STARTED APPEARING ON DIC. THE POWER STEERING SHUT OFF ALL WHILE I WAS GOING 75 MILES ON THE INTERSTATE. I MANAGED TO GET THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. MY CAR STARTED GOING CRAZY (WINDOWS ROLLED UP AND DOWN, WINDSHIELD WIPERS STARTED WORKING, AND RADIO SHUT ON AND OFF) ALL ON ITS OWN. MY ENTIRE CABIN FILLED UP WITH BLACK SMOKE AND THERE WAS A STRONG ODOR OF BURNING PLASTIC. THE CAR DIED WITHIN A FEW SECONDS OF GETTING THE CAR TO SHOULDER. I CONTACTED DEALERSHIP AGAIN AND ADVISED THEM WHAT WAS HAPPENING. THEY STATED THEY WERE CALLING A TOW TRUNK AND HUNG UP ON ME. TOW TRUCK COMPANY CONTACTED ME TO INQUIRE LOCATION THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER HAD AN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TIME GETTING THE CAR ONTO THE TOW TRUCK. MY CAR WOULD NOT BUDGE AND HE WAS WORRIED ABOUT THE STRONG ODOR/SMOKE. HE LITERALLY HAD TO DRAG MY CAR ONTO THE TRUCK. I WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP AND PROVIDED A RENTAL CAR. I PICKED MY CAR UP ON JUNE 17, ALL THAT WAS REPLACED WAS GENERATOR CONTROL MODULE AGAIN. THIS CAR HAS BEEN IN AND OUT OF THE DEALERSHIP FOR RECALL WORK AT LEAST 9 MORE TIMES IN THE LAST YEAR. DEALERSHIP KEEPS CARS FOR DAYS - RETURNS TO ME AND SAYS "NO CODES ARE BEING THROWN ON MACHINE. CAR IS WORKING PROPERLY". *TR

WHILE DRIVING THE CAR, ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, THEN THE BATTERY LIGHT CAME ON. TOOK THE CAR TO DEALER FOR REPAIR ON JULY 11 AND WAS TOLD IT WAS THE MOTOR FOR THE FAN THAT COOLS THE BATTERY. DEALER REPAIRED AND RETURNED TO ME ON JULY 13. NOTED COVER ON AIRBAG ON STEERING WHEEL IS MALALIGNED, WHICH IS A NEW PROBLEM. TRAVELED OUT OF STATE WITH CAR AND FOUND CRUISE CONTROL AND TRIP ODOMETER NO LONGER WORK (WERE FINE PRIOR TO "REPAIR"). AFTER ARRIVING OUT OF STATE, THE MYLINK COMPUTER FAILED TO WORK THEN BEGAN TO WORK ABOUT TWO HOURS LATER. TOOK CAR TO DEALER WHO REFUSED TO TAKE IT AND TOLD ME TO COME BACK NEXT WEEK. WENT TO SECOND DEALER WHO HAS HAD CAR SINCE JULY 16. MEANWHILE, WE DISCOVERED THE CAR WAS UNDER RECALL AND DEALER SHOULD NOT HAVE SOLD PRIOR TO REPAIR. THIS CRITICAL REPAIR WAS NOT MADE AT THE FIRST OR SECOND DEALER. THIS IS AN INFERIOR PRODUCT, A VEHICLE WITH 668 ACTUAL MILES SHOULD NOT HAVE A FAN MOTOR PROBLEM. THE GAS CAP DOES NOT CLICK TO CLOSE EITHER. MY CAR HAS BEEN IN A DEALERSHIP GARAGE MORE THAN I HAVE ACTUALLY GOTTEN TO DRIVE IT; MY FIRST PAYMENT IS NOT EVEN DUE YET! THIS CAR IS A LEMON, I FEEL CHEATED AND MISLED BY CHEVY SINCE THEY HAD THE CHANCE TO FIX IT BEFORE THEY SOLD IT TO ME. MY FAMILY WAS IN THE CAR AT THE TIME OF THE FAN MOTOR ISSUE, THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A SIGNIFICANT ACCIDENT. I AM EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED IN THIS VEHICLE AND AM AFRAID OF FURTHER PROBLEMS WITH IT IN THE FUTURE.

AFTER INSPECTION, THEY ADVISED HIM THAT HE WOULD HAVE TO PUT 500 MILES ON THE VEHICLE FOR IT TO LEARN HIS WAY OF DRIVING. AFTER DRIVING A WHILE, THE SHIFTING BECAME PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER. AFTER DIAGNOSIS, THEY ADVISED HIM THAT THE TWO REAR ENGINE MOUNTING BOLTS WERE NOT TIGHTENED PROPERLY. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BY TIGHTENING OF THE BOLTS.
