NHTSA Campaign: 19V019000
Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2010-2011 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver frontal air bag, the air bag inflator may explode due to being overpressurized.
Risk: If the inflator explodes, sharp metal fragments may strike the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
Fix: GM has notified owners, and dealers will replace the front driver air bag module, free of charge. The recall began February 25, 2019. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-522-9559. GM's number for this recall is N182206630.
NHTSA Campaign: 14V252000
Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured May 16, 2003, through October 11, 2012, 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured May 26, 2004, through January 4, 2010, and 2007-2010 Saturn Aura vehicles manufactured April 24, 2006, through May 26, 2009. In the affected vehicles, increased resistance in the Body Control Module (BCM) connection may result in voltage fluctuations in the Brake Apply Sensor (BAS) circuit. These fluctuations can cause one or more of these conditions: the brake lights to illuminate without the brake pedal being pushed; the brake lights to not illuminate when the pedal is pushed; difficulty disengaging the cruise control; moving the gear shifter out of the 'PARK' position without pushing the brake; and disablement of crash avoidance features such as traction control, electronic stability control, and panic braking assist features.
Risk: Any of the above failure conditions increases the risk of a crash.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will attach the wiring harness to the BCM with a spacer, apply dielectric lubricant to both the BCM and harness connector and the BAS and harness connector, and will relearn the brake pedal home position, free of charge. The manufacturer distributed an Interim letter to customers on July 14, 2014. The recall began on August 18, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac), 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn). GM's number for this recall is 13036.
NHTSA Campaign: 14E044000
Component: STEERING
Dorman Products, Inc. (Dorman) is recalling certain replacement intermediate steering shafts sold under the Dorman, OE Solutions, and Solutions brand names, part numbers 425-167, 2425167, and 7-3074, for installation on 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6, and 2007-2009 Saturn Aura vehicles. The affected steering shafts may have a yoke that inadequately supports the u-joint bearing resulting in a premature failure.
Risk: A joint bearing that fails prematurely may cause separation of the u-joint resulting in a complete loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dorman will notify owners, and dealers will refund the purchase price or replace the steering shafts, free of charge. The recall began in September 2014. Owners may contact Dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492.
NHTSA Campaign: 15V269000
Component: SEAT BELTS
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured April 8, 2010, to October 11, 2012. In the affected vehicles, the flexible steel cables that connect the seat belts to the vehicle at the outside of the driver seat and the front passenger seat may be bent from being sat on while entering the vehicle. This repeated bending may result in the cable breaking.
Risk: If the cable breaks, the seat occupant may not be properly restrained in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the outboard lap anchor mounting bracket and inspect the flexible steel cable, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on November 16, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 15031.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 970)
Steering →6 issues
Your car's power steering can suddenly shut off while driving, which is extremely dangerous and makes steering very difficult. This is a known recall issue, but Chevrolet has a 10-year age policy and won't service the recall on your vehicle despite it having under 100,000 miles. Since the power steering is electric, this can't be fixed at home and requires professional service.

Your power steering system is not working, making the steering wheel feel heavy and difficult to turn like a manual steering system. This makes the vehicle harder to control and maneuver, especially at low speeds or when parking. The issue likely involves the power steering pump, hoses, or fluid system that provides hydraulic assistance to your steering.

Electrical System,exterior Lighting →3 issues
Your rear tail light housings caught fire while your car was parked, with flames shooting out of both light assemblies on the back of the vehicle. The fire melted the light housings and rear bumper before it was extinguished with garden hoses and by emergency responders. The trunk and interior were not damaged, but the rear lights and bumper were destroyed by the fire.

Your headlights have shut off multiple times without warning while driving, leaving you with only running lights, turn signals, and brake lights—even though no dashboard warning lights appeared. This has happened at least three times despite replacing bulbs and connectors twice. You've found this is a widespread problem reported by many 2008-2014 Malibu owners. The fix may require diagnosing and replacing the headlight switch, wiring harness, or internal electrical components in the headlight circuit.

Your low beam headlights are burning out frequently, requiring repeated replacements at $60+ each time. Even after replacing both sides and installing a new headlight harness, the low beams continue to fail. This likely involves checking the electrical circuit, voltage regulator, or alternator to prevent premature bulb burnout.

Engine →2 issues
Your car is displaying a "reduced engine power" warning that causes the engine to shake and lose power dramatically—sometimes dropping from 70 mph to 30 mph instantly. This happens randomly (zero to five times during a single drive) and requires you to pull over, turn off the engine, and restart it to reset the computer, though sometimes you need to wait 5+ minutes for the warning to clear. The sudden loss of power while driving creates a safety hazard since you may not be able to accelerate out of traffic or reach a safe location. The issue likely involves a sensor, fuel system component, or ignition system malfunction that needs diagnostic testing and repair.

Your 2011 Malibu stopped running at 78,500 miles and has been diagnosed as needing engine replacement. Before complete failure, you noticed engine ticking sounds for a couple of months, followed by a battery warning light (though the battery tested fine). You suspect a 2023 accident where your car was hit on the driver's side may have damaged the engine internally, especially since the repair shop only addressed cosmetic damage and your car afterward pulled to the right. Fixing this will require either engine replacement or internal engine repair to address whatever damage occurred.

Electrical System,exterior Lighting,visibility/wiper →1 issue
Your headlight wiring connector has melted multiple times, leaving you without low beam headlights and forcing you to drive on high beams at night—a safety hazard for you, your family, and other drivers. The connector getting hot enough to melt also poses a potential fire risk. This problem has recurred at least three times since January 2025, with replacements lasting only a few months before failing again, and it happens without warning while parked or while driving.

Electrical System, unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your car may suddenly shut off while you're driving, cutting all power including steering control with no warning. This happened to you during rush hour traffic, stranding your car on the road. A mechanic kept your car for over a month, replaced the fuel pump, but the problem persisted and was identified as an electrical issue. Diagnosing and fixing the underlying electrical problem may require comprehensive testing of the vehicle's electrical system, battery, alternator, and related wiring.

Steering,electrical System,service Brakes →1 issue
While driving on the interstate, your power steering suddenly failed, your driver's side headlight went out, and your brakes felt like they were locking up, leaving you with almost no control of your car. After you slowed down and exited the highway, the power steering returned, but the headlight remained off. You replaced the headlight, but it failed again after just 2 miles of driving. The issues appear to be related to your vehicle's ESC (electronic stability control) system and power steering, and this caused a dangerous loss of vehicle control.

Steering,vehicle Speed Control →1 issue
Your power steering position sensor or torque sensor (part of the electronic stability control system) may fail, potentially causing your steering wheel to lock up while driving. Your vehicle has 147,000 miles and qualifies for the extended warranty coverage (10 years/150,000 miles), but GM has denied the claim saying the coverage period has expired. The repair typically involves replacing the failed sensor in the electronic stability control system.

Steering,electrical System,unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your power steering system is malfunctioning, indicated by a "power steering" warning light on your dashboard. When parked or idling, your steering wheel jiggles and feels loose, and while driving, you need to constantly make small corrections to keep the car in its lane because of this vibration. Restarting the car temporarily restores steering control, but the problem returns. This issue likely involves the power steering pump, electrical connections, or steering control module that will need diagnosis and repair.
