Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2017 Volkswagen Passat, 2018 Tiguan LWB, 2007-2009 Jetta Sedan, 2011-2013, 2015 and 2019 Jetta, 2013 Jetta Hybrid, 2008-2009 Jetta Sportwagen, 2015 Golf Sportwagen, 2013 Golf, 2008-2010 and 2012-2013 Beetle and Beetle Convertible, 2008-2010 Beetle, and Beetle Convertible vehicles. Modifications made while the vehicles were in an internal evaluation period may cause the affected vehicles to not comply with all of the applicable regulatory requirements.
Risk: If the vehicles do not meet all regulatory requirements, there could be an increased risk of a crash, fire, or injury.
Fix: Volkswagen will notify owners and repurchase the affected vehicles. The recall began November 6, 2019. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 01D7. Note: This recall is an expansion of NHTSA recall number 18V-329.

Component: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:MASTER CYLINDER
Tenneco Automotive (Tenneco) is recalling certain Beck/Arnley Master Cylinders, part number 072-9831, sold as aftermarket or replacement parts for 2004-2018 Volkswagen Jetta, and 2012-2019 Volkswagen Beetle vehicles. The fluid seal crimp on the master cylinder may be insufficient, causing brake fluid to leak or the cylinder to come apart.
Risk: If there is a brake fluid leak, it can reduce braking ability, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Beck/Arnley will notify the distributors that sold the master cylinders and will work with the distributors to notify the end users. Affected master cylinders will be exchanged for a new master cylinder (part number 072-9990), free of charge. The recall began October 30, 2020. Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2015-2019 GTI, 2015-2016 and 2018-2019 Golf, 2012-2019 Beetle and Beetle Convertible, 2017-2019 Golf SportWagen and 2011-2018 Jetta vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, manual handbrake and keyless entry. A build-up of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts may enable the key to be removed from the ignition when the transmission shift lever is not in "Park."
Risk: Removing the key while the shift lever is in a position other than "Park" increases the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.
Fix: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install an additional switch and circuit board, free of charge. The recall began November 19, 2019. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 37M2.

Your sunroof suddenly shattered with a loud explosion while driving on the highway with the air conditioning running on high. Glass fell through gaps in the sunshade, and you heard ringing in your ears for a full day afterward. The glass appeared to have exploded upward with no visible impact from outside or damage to the sunshade, suggesting a manufacturing or installation defect rather than road debris. The repair will likely require complete sunroof glass replacement and inspection of the sunroof assembly.

While driving, your car suddenly won't shift into gear and grinds briefly when you try to downshift. After you stop attempting to shift, you're eventually able to get the car back into drive, but the clutch feels very loose and disconnected from the transmission. You may notice the gearshift mechanism isn't responding normally. This issue may require inspection and repair of the clutch system and gearshift linkage to restore proper engagement.

While driving on I-25 highway with no warning signs, your sunroof glass suddenly exploded without any impact or object hitting it. The inner cover remained closed and undamaged, so no glass entered the cabin, but the incident happened with no warning lights or noise. The sunroof will need to be replaced to repair the damaged glass panel.

You purchased your 2015 Volkswagen Jetta with an odometer reading of 77,183 miles. When you later tried to sell it to Carvana, they reported that the vehicle's last recorded mileage in 2023 was 80,000 miles — a discrepancy that suggests the odometer may have been rolled back before your purchase. This could indicate odometer fraud and may affect the vehicle's value and your ability to sell it.

Air Bags →2 issues
Your airbag warning lamp came on, along with a tire pressure warning, and your steering wheel buttons stopped working. A service center diagnosed this as a faulty clock spring, which is the part that connects your airbag system to the steering wheel controls. This is a safety concern because if the clock spring fails completely, your airbags may not deploy in a crash. The fix will likely involve replacing the clock spring assembly.

Your front passenger airbag warning light stays on while driving. A mechanic found that the passenger seat occupant sensor (which detects whether someone is sitting there) is faulty and needs to be replaced. This prevents the airbag system from working properly on the passenger side. The repair will involve replacing the faulty occupant sensor under the passenger seat.

Engine →2 issues
Your engine suddenly stopped twice while driving. The first time, a piston failure was repaired under warranty. The second time, the car wouldn't start due to misfires in all cylinders caused by excessive oil buildup inside all four cylinders, which would require a $11,000 engine replacement not covered by warranty. Despite regular maintenance at the dealership, you're unable to use the vehicle and believe this is a manufacturing defect rather than owner error.

Your car has been recalled twice for a camshaft issue that's causing a ticking noise from inside the engine. The dealership told you they need NHTSA approval before they can fix it. The recalls involve the camshaft (23R1) and engine control module (24DR). Resolving this will likely require the dealership to replace or repair the camshaft and potentially reprogram the engine control module once recall authorization is complete.

Service Brakes, forward Collision Avoidance →2 issues
Your ABS warning light is on and the system isn't communicating with the ABS module, which is also causing your speedometer to stop working. You may also see your EPC (Engine Power Control) warning light illuminated. This will likely require diagnosis and repair of the ABS module or its wiring connections.

Service Brakes →1 issue
Your brakes failed to stop the car while it was rolling forward on a downhill slope. When you pressed the brake pedal after putting the car in gear, there was no response and the car rolled to a stop uncontrolled. After restarting the engine, normal brake pressure returned and the brakes worked properly again. The dealer has not been able to reproduce the problem, but it may involve the brake system losing pressure when the engine is off.

Steering,power Train,electrical System →1 issue
After driving over a water hose with metal couplings, your oil pan was damaged and you lost oil pressure. Within 5 minutes, your power steering failed and the gas pedal stopped working, though your brakes still functioned. After the oil pan was replaced, your car wouldn't start, and diagnostic testing revealed a failed transmission and bad battery that would cost approximately $11,000 to repair together.

Power Train,unknown Or Other,engine →1 issue
Your 2015 Volkswagen Jetta 1.8T SE loses power while driving—the engine revs higher but the car doesn't accelerate properly, especially going uphill, which is unsafe. Even though your vehicle received recall repairs for the camshaft and engine computer software, the problem still happens. A mechanic will need to diagnose whether the original recall repairs actually fixed the underlying engine issue or if there's a separate problem causing the power loss.

Unknown Or Other,engine,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your car's turbocharger has failed, and you've been experiencing coolant that disappears while the car is parked—even though your mechanic pressurized the system and found no visible leaks on the ground. You're now noticing smoke coming from the exhaust. The turbocharger will likely need to be replaced, and the coolant system should be inspected for internal leaks.

Electrical System,engine,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your Jetta sometimes won't start after you've driven it for a short distance, turned it off, and tried to restart it within 15-45 minutes, even though the dashboard lights stay on. A diagnostic scan shows your immobilizer (the security system that recognizes your key) isn't working properly, so the engine won't crank. After waiting 1-3 hours or longer, it may start again, but the problem is unpredictable and happens with both keys in various conditions. The fix will likely involve diagnosing and repairing the immobilizer system or related electrical components that communicate with your key.

Visibility →1 issue
Your defroster only works when the switch is turned all the way to maximum, and you hear an abnormal grinding sound coming from under the dashboard when you use it. Both the dealer and Volkswagen acknowledged this is a common problem but didn't diagnose or repair it. The issue started around 49,000 miles. The fix likely involves replacing the defroster blower motor or the switch mechanism that controls it.
