What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The ABS light came on and there was this high-pitched beeping noise that would not stop as I was driving, when I tried to press the brakes I noticed that it was barely working and had to pull over on the side. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? I could barely brake as my brakes felt as if they were hard to press which could have led to an accident. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? The traction control light came on a few days prior and a few other related lights that could have been related to the abs. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? No Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No
The ABS light came on, the actuator pump makes loud noises and brakes don’t function correctly. Faulty braking system that causes the brakes to lock up. Been doing off and on for a few years. Toyota issues a service announcement but don’t see a recall.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and was diagnosed with needing the brake master cylinder replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The contact also filed a complaint with the manufacturer. The failure mileage was approximately 154,000.

WE ARE HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY ON OUR TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID AND IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. OUR CAR HAS BEEN DEEMED UNSAFE TO DRIVE UNTIL THIS REPAIR IS MADE, LEAVING US IN A PRECARIOUS SITUATION.
THE VEHICLE'S CLUSTER WOULD START GOING HAYWIRE - WITH THE SPEEDOMETER GOING TO ZERO, THE RPM FLUCTUATING, AND THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE READING COLD, AT RANDOM TIMES WHILE DRIVING AND IN MOTION. THE A/C WOULD GO OUT AS WELL, AND THE BRAKE AND ABS LIGHTS WOULD COME ON. THE CAR WOULD STILL RUN BUT THE CLUSTER WOULD FLICKER AS DESCRIBED. AFTER FLICKERING FOR A WHILE, IT WOULD RESUME AS NORMAL AND THEN HAPPEN AGAIN AS I CONTINUED DRIVING. I HAD MY CAMRY INSPECTED AND IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A MALFUNCTIONING ABS ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY. I HAD ANOTHER ABS ACTUATOR PUT IN, AND THANKFULLY NO ONE WAS INJURED IN THE CAR DUE TO THE FAULTY BRAKE SYSTEM. IT WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AS THE ABS WAS MALFUNCTIONING.

THE CONTACT SHIFTED INTO LOW GEAR AND WAS ABLE TO COAST THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. IN ADDITION, THE ABS, TRACTION CONTROL, AND BRAKE WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER OR AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND DID NOT ASSIST. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 137,000.
ON MY 2009 CAMRY HYBRID, AS I WAS GOING TO WORK, WHEN I TRIED TO SLOW DOWN THE CAR THE BRAKES WENT HARD AND CAN'T STOP THE CAR TOTALLY I SAW THE BRAKE LIGHT, TRACTION CONTROL, AND ABS LIGHTS TURNED ON, AND CHECK VSC SYSTEM DISPLAYED. I IMMEDIATELY SLOW DOWN THE CAR TOOK THE EXIT AND STOP THE CAR. I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND START THE CAR AGAIN WHICH FIXED ALL THE ABOVE ISSUES. IT HAPPENED APPROX TWO WEEKS AGO AND TOOK THE CAR TO TOYOTA OF GRAPEVINE TX 76051 AND THEY DID NOT FIND ANY ISSUE RELATED TO BRAKE OR ANY CODE. I AM SCARED TO DRIVE THE CAR AND TAKING THE CAR TO THE SAME DEALER TO CHECK AGAIN.
BRAKE COMES ON, ABS LIGHT COMES ON AND IT BECOMES DIFFICULT TO BRAKE (BRAKES ARE HARD). THEN AFTER AN HOUR OR SO THE LIGHTS GO OFF AND BRAKES RETURN TO NORMAL. I NOTICED THAT WHEN IT RETURNS TO NORMAL THERE IS A HEAVY BUMP, IT ACTUALLY FEELS LIKE SOMEONE BUMPED YOU FROM THE REAR. THIS HAS HAPPENED OFF AND ON FOR ABOUT 3 MONTHS NOW. I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC THINKING IT WAS SOMETHING MINOR, PADS ETC. AND IT WAS NOT THAT. ON 11/28/18 I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY FOUND NOTHING WRONG. NOT SURE WHAT ELSE CAN BE DONE. THIS IS VERY FRUSTRATING AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS. BECAUSE THIS PROBLEM CAN HAPPEN AT ANY TIME WITH NO WARNING, IT HAS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING AND ALSO STARTING THE VEHICLE. DURING THE FAILURE, SEVERAL WARNING MESSAGES AND INDICATORS DISPLAYED AND ILLUMINATED INCLUDING "CHECK VSC SYSTEM" (VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL), ABS, MASTER WARNING, AND BRAKE FAILURE. WHEN THE CONTACT TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED THE VEHICLE, IT OPERATED NORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO PASSPORT TOYOTA (5001 AUTH WAY, SUITLAND, MD) TO BE DIAGNOSED, BUT THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 106,571.
WHILE DRIVING STRAIGHT AT ABOUT 40 MPH (IN A 50 MPH ZONE ON A BACK ROAD) I STEPPED ON THE BRAKES WHEN APPROACHING A STOP SIGN. THE BRAKES FAILED TO ENGAGE. THE CHECK VBS SYSTEM WARNING CAME ON AS WELL AS ALL OF THE DASH BOARD WARNING LIGHTS. THE CAR WAS CHECKED AND THE BRAKE PADS WERE FINE, THE BRAKE FLUID LEVEL WAS NORMAL, AND NO COMPUTER CODES CAME UP WHEN THAT WAS CHECKED. THE BRAKE LIGHT KEEPS COMING ON AND OFF AND THE BRAKES WORK MOST OF THE TIME, BUT OUT OF NO WHERE THEY WON'T ENGAGE. IT WAS VERY SCARY, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE MY KIDS WERE IN THE CAR. THANK GOODNESS I WASN'T GOING FASTER THAN I WAS BECAUSE I DON'T THINK WE WOULD HAVE STOPPED IN TIME.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 165,000.
THE ABS AND BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATE, TEMPERATURE GAUGE, GEAR GAUGE AND SPEEDOMETER NOT WORKING. THIS HAPPENS INTERMITTENTLY AND, WHEN IT DOES, THE AC DOES NOT WORK. THE PROBLEM BEGAN WITH THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS. OVER TIME, THE OTHER GAUGES AND THE AC BECAME INVOLVED. WHEN THESE WARNING LIGHTS GO OFF AND THE GAUGES WORK, THE AC ALSO WORKS. I AM TOLD THE BRAKE ACTUATOR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO LEGACY TOYOTA (3800 W TENNESSEE ST, TALLAHASSEE, FL 32304, (888) 610-8309) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ABS CONTROL MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 110,000.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 100,000.
I WAS TRAVELING EASTBOUND ON A CITY STREET TURNING INTO A SHOPPING PLAZA AND APPLIED THE BRAKES TO LET OPPOSITE WESTBOARD TRAFFIC TO CLEAR. THE CAR DID NOT RESPOND TO THE BRAKES AND I HIT THE CENTER CONCRETE MEDIAN THAT DIVIDES EAST AND WESTBOUND TRAFFIC.
UNKNOWN MY VEHICLE WAS MOBILE, AT THE NORMAL SPEED LIMIT OF 35MPH ON A CITY STREET, AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THERE WAS A BURNING SMELL. BY THE TIME I FOUND A SAFE PLACE TO STOP MY ALL THE LIGHTS ON MY DASH WENT ON, WITH A WHIZZING SOUND COMING FROM THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE.
DRIVING AT ABOUT 30 MPH ON A STRAIGHT ROAD 6AM APPROX. 1 MILE FROM MY HOUSE. I APPLIED BRAKES INTENDING TO MAKE A LEFT TURN THEN VSC WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND BRAKES DID NOT WORK PROPERLY. NO CARS IN FRONT OF ME, HAD TO PUSH HARD ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO SLOW THE CAR. I MISSED MY INTERSECTION TO TURN. IT IS AS IF THE POWER SYSTEM TO THE BRAKES STOPPED WORKING. I SLOWED ENOUGH TO TURN THE CAR ONTO A SIDED STREET AND PUMPED THE BRAKES HARD, IT IS STILL DIFFICULT TO BRAKE, BUT AT LEAST I KNOW I HAVE TO APPLY HEAVY FOOT PRESSURE TO BRAKE. TURNED CAR OFF AND BACK ON AGAIN AND VSC LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN, THEN TURNED OFF AFTER 1 MINUTE AND POWER BRAKING RETURNED TO NORMAL.
THE ABS LIGHT AND THE RED BOLD BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON AND THEN OFF AND THE NEXT DAY THE ABS LIGHT AND THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND THE THE SPEEDOMETER WENT TO ZERO, THE TACHOMETER WENT TO ZERO WHEN I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY, ALSO THE AIR CONDITIONER WOULD NOT WORK, AFTER A FEW MINUTES THE WARNING LIGHTS WENT OFF AND EVERYTHING WORKED FOR A FEW MINUTES AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN. I DRIVE THE CAR IMMEDIATELY TO THE REPAIR SHOP AND THEN CHECKED THE OWNER'S MANUAL AND READ IT'S THE ABS SYSTEM IS MALFUNCTIONING FOR THE CAR.

THIS IS THE SECOND TIME MY CHECK ABS SYSTEM HAS COME ON. THE FIRST TIME THE BRAKES WERE VERY HARD TO WORK AND WOULD HARDLY STOP AND GRABBED. THIS WAS FOUND TO BE A BROKEN WIRE IN IN THE REAR OF THE CAR. NOW IT HAS HAPPENED AGAIN AND THIS TIME THEY SAY IT IS THE REAR HARNESS THAT IS BAD AND IT IS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY. MOST OF THE 79 COMPLAINTS ARE FOR THESE PROBLEMS AND THERE IS YET TO BE A RECALL. THIS IS NUTS! DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO GET KILLED BEFORE THE NHTSA DOES ANYTHING. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE, ITS THE BRAKES!!! .
THIS IS THE 3RD TIME THAT MY CHECK VSC SYSTEM HAS COME ON. I WAS DRIVING ON THE STREET AND CAME TO A LIGHT AND MY BRAKES LOCKED AND I COULDN'T STOP RIGHT AWAY. LUCKY THERE WAS NO CAR IN FRONT OF ME BECAUSE I WOULD HAVE HIT THEM. I HAD PRESS HARD ON THE BRAKES WHICH CAUSES THE CAR TO START BUCKING. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. I AM LOOKING TO PURCHASE ANOTHER CAR BECAUSE I DON'T FEEL SAFE IN THIS CAR.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 93,000.

I HAVE BEEN FEELING FROM LAST 2 OR 3 DAYS THAT MY TOYOTA CAMRY BRAKES WERE NOT WORKING RIGHT AND THEY REQUIRED ADDITIONAL PEDALING TO BRAKE AND SOMEHOW I WAS ABLE TO FEEL THAT IT WAS TAKING EXTRA TIME AND DISTANCE TO STOP AND WAS PLANNING TO SHOW THIS TO TOYOTA DEALER TODAY , I HAVE TALKED ABOUT THIS DURING PREVIOUS SERVICE WITH TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER DURING MY PREVIOUS SERVICE & THEY TOLD ME EVERYTHING WAS OK AND MY BRAKE PADS WERE GOOD,BUT UNFORTUNATELY MY FEARS CAME TRUE TODAY THEN WHEN I WAS DRIVING 20-25MPH AND SUDDENLY A CAR AHEAD OF ME ALMOST 20-25FEET AHEAD BRAKED AND I PUSHED HARD TO BRAKE BUT I COULD FEEL IT WAS NOT BRAKING RIGHT OR THE HYBRIDS BRAKING SYSTEM HAS FAILED AND MY CAR DIDN'T STOP IN THE RIGHT TIME AND WE HIT THE CAR AHEAD OF US.
2009 TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID THAT HAS BEEN SERVICED SEVERAL TIMES FOR BRAKES. REPEATED REQUESTS TO CHANGE BRAKE PADS, WHICH WAS INITIALLY THOUGHT TO BE THE PROBLEM BUT SEVERAL MECHANICS HAVE CONFIRMED THAT THIS WAS NOT THE ISSUE. CONTACTED TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS WHOM CONFIRMED THAT THERE IS NO RECALL. INSTEAD, OWNERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VISIT THEIR LOCAL DEALER ONLY IF A DASHBOARD WARNING BRAKE LIGHT IS LIT, WHICH WAS NOT APPLICABLE IN MY CASE ALTHOUGH A DEGREDATION IN THE BRAKE SYSTEM WAS APPARENT. TOYOTA ONLY SENT A NOTICE REGARDING THE BRAKE-FLUID RESERVOIR TANK AND NO WARNING TO CONSUMERS OF A SERIOUS SAFETY RISK REGARDING A DEFECTIVE BRAKE SYSTEM THAT WORSENS OVERTIME. CURRENTLY HAVING A DIFFICULT TIME SELLING THE VEHICLE DUE TO SAME FEEDBACK/COMPLAINT OF SLOW BRAKE RESPONSE, WHICH WORSENS WITH HIGHER SPEEDS AND/OR SUDDEN STOPS. REPORTS OF EXTRA EFFORT IN BRAKE PEDAL APPLICATION, STRONG VIBRATION AND NOISE WHEN ATTEMPTING TO DO A QUICK STOP. THIS ISSUE HAS RESULTED IN THREE SEPARATE CAR ACCIDENTS WITH THREE DIFFERENT DRIVERS, WHEREIN TWO COLLIDED WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE AND ONE STRUCK AN OBJECT, ALL WITHIN A 2-MONTH PERIOD. ABS MODULE IS KILLING SIGNALS TO DASH TO DISPLAY. GAUGES ARE DISPLAYING ZERO DURING DRIVING AND MILEAGE FOR ODOMETER IS NOT MOVING (AFFECTED GAUGES: SPEEDOMETER, TACHOMETER, TEMPERATURE, GAS, ETC). AFTER TAKING THE CAR TO A MECHANIC, THE DEALER QUOTE FOR THE PRICE TO REPLACE THE ABS MODULE WAS $1,800. THE MECHANIC MENTIONED VERBALLY THAT TOYOTA HAD PLANNED A RECALL BUT BECAUSE THERE WEREN'T ENOUGH COMPLAINTS, NO RECALL HAS BEEN FILED. INVESTIGATION INTO THIS MATTER WOULD BE HIGHLY APPRECIATED. THEY SAID THAT THE STROKE SENSOR HAD GONE OUT AND WHEN I ASKED HOW IT HAPPENED THEY SAID IT JUST MALFUNCTIONED FOR NO REASON. THE COST TO REPLACE WAS $433.14. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT DRIVING A CAR THAT CAN SUDDENLY MALFUNCTION AND LOSE BRAKING FUNCTION WITHOUT WARNING. ON DECEMBER 4, 2011, WITH MY WIFE AND RETURNING FROM A VISIT TO OUR CHILDREN, I WAS DRIVING OUR 2009 CAMRY EAST FROM BROOKLYN IN THE LEFT LANE ABOUT A MILE ONTO THE JACKIE ROBINSON PARKWAY AT ABOUT 4:30 P.M., VISIBILITY VERY GOOD AND ROAD DRY. I TRIED TO STEER MAINLY INTO THE SPACE BETWEEN THAT CAR AND THE ONE IN THE RIGHT LANE SO AS TO MINIMIZE DAMAGE TO THEM, BUT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME WENT A LITTLE FASTER. OUR CAR, HAVING HIT THE RIGHT-LANE CAR IN ITS LEFT REAR, WENT PAST THAT CAR AND INTO THE OPENED-UP SPACE AND THE SHOULDER, AND INTO AN ABOUT THREE-PLUS-FOOT CONCRETE RETAINING WALL, HITTING IT AT AN ANGLE WITH THE RIGHT FRONT OF OUR CAR, WHICH MOUNTED THE WALL ON OUR RIGHT-HAND WHEELS AND CAME TO A STOP THERE. I WOULD ADD THAT WHEN TOYOTA RECALLED THE CAR IN 2010 I BROUGHT IT IN FOR THE ADJUSTMENTS AND WAS INTERESTED TO LEARN FROM THE MECHANIC AT THE DEALERSHIP THAT THE ADJUSTMENTS WOULD TAKE AWHILE BECAUSE THEY REQUIRED MODIFICATIONS TO THE CAR'S COMPUTER. SHE WAS KNOCKED TO THE GROUND AND DRAGGED BY THE VEHICLE SUFFERING LACERATIONS TO BOTH HER LEGS. SHE STATED THAT THE VEHICLE THEN ACCELERATED FORWARD AND FINALLY CAME TO REST ON SIDEWALK AND LAWN OF A RESIDENCE. WHILE RESPONDING MEDICAL PERSONNEL WERE TREATING THE ACCIDENT VICTIM, A MEMBER OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT REACHED IN VEHICLE TO TURN THE VEHICLE OFF. I WAS HAVING EXTREME VIBRATION ON MY 2009 TOYOTA CAMRY WHEN DRIVING OVER 65 MPH ON SOME STATE INTERSTATE. THIS HAPPENED MOST NOTICEABLY WHEN REACHING SPEEDS OF OVER 60 MPH, AND THE TIRES WERE LITERALLY SKIPPING OFF THE ROAD WHEN BREAKING AND YOU WOULD LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD LEAD TO A CRASH CAUSING A DEATH. THIS IS ON A 2009 TOYOTA CAMRY. THIS WAS TAKEN INTO THE DEALERSHIP SEVERAL TIMES, AND IT WAS FINALLY ADDRESSED. I CALLED TOYOTA AND THEY SAID THEY DID NOT HAVE A TSB ON MY SITUATION. THEY LIED. 3. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEY FOUND DUE TO DEFECT IN MATERIALS USED BY TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION, THAT THERE WAS PREMATURE WARPAGE ON THE BRAKE ROTORS. ALSO THE DEALERSHIP REALIZED TOYOTA PUT OUT A TSB -0169-9 ON JUNE 4 2009. YET WHEN I CALLED TOYOTA CUSTOMER CARE AND SPECIFICALLY ASKED IF THERE WAS A TSB FOR BRAKE ROTORS THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REP. SAID NO. BUT THIS WAS NOT PRESENTED TO ME UNTIL AFTER MY CAR WENT OVER 36K MILES. MY CAR HAS 37.7K MILES. YET I TOOK MY CAR IN AT 35K MILES, AND THIS WAS NOT FIXED UNDER WARRANTY. TOYOTA CUSTOMER CARE REFUSED TO EVEN ADDRESS MY PROBLEM, AND TOLD ME THERE WERE NO TSB BULLETINS OUT ON THIS AND I SPOKE TO [XXX] AT TOYOTA CUSTOMER CARE, AND EVEN WHEN I CALLED IN AUGUST THEY TOLD MY THERE WERE NOT TSB BULLETINS. TOYOTA HAS A SERIOUS ISSUES WITH THEIR BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS THAT CAN CAUSE THE TIRES TO LEAVE THE ROAD WHEN BRAKING. I HAVE ALSO CALLED TOYOTA OVER A YEAR AGO ABOUT THIS AND THEY DENIED THAT THERE WAS ANYTHING WRONG. THE STALL WOULD OCCUR AS THE CONSUMER MADE A RAPID CHANGE FROM DECELERATION TO ACCELERATION. THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THE STALL WAS A BUILT IN DESIGN FEATURE. THE CONSUMER STATED TO MINIMIZE THE STALL, SHE MUST MANUALLY DOWN SHIFT THE TRANSMISSION WHENEVER THE ENGINE IS IN THE DECELERATION PHASE. RECENTLY, A SLOW MOVING 18 WHEELER UNEXPECTEDLY PULLED INTO THE CONSUMERS LANE OF TRAFFIC, WHILE TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE CONSUMER STATED HER NATURAL REACTION WAS TO REMOVE HER FOOT FROM THE ACCELERATOR, PUTTING THE ENGINE /TRANSMISSION INTO DECELERATION MODE. AS THE SITUATION UNFOLDED, SHE CONCLUDED THAT THE RAPID ACCELERATION AND LANE CHANGE WAS THE SAFEST METHOD. WHEN THE CONSUMER TRIED TO ACCELERATE AROUND THE TRUCK, THERE WAS NO REACTION FROM THE VEHICLE. THE TRANSMISSION DELAYED RESPONDING AND WHEN IT DID RESPOND, IT CHOSE A GEAR WHICH PRODUCED NO MEANINGFUL FORWARD MOTION, BUT LOTS OF NOISE. CONSEQUENTLY, SHE WAS FORCED TO BRAKE VERY HARD, BUT THE BRAKES FAILED TO PERFORM AS DESIGNED. THE NEXT DAY, THE DEALER EXPLAINED THERE WAS A FACTORY ALERT ISSUE ON THE BRAKE PADS. THE PADS WERE REPLACED, AND THE ROTORS WERE TURNED. *JB

VERY SOFT BRAKES IN 2009 TOYOTA CAMRY. BRAKES MUST BE PUMPED TO GET ANY REAL BRAKING ACTION. AT TIMES BRAKE PEDAL WILL CONTINUE TO GO DOWN WHEN BRAKES ARE PRESSED WITH NO ADDITIONAL BRAKING ACTION. TOYOTA CLAIMS BRAKES TO BE IN SPEC AND WORKING PROPERLY, THE BRAKES ARE FUNCTIONING AS DESIGNED. I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM SINCE I GOT THE CAR, NEW. AND, HAVE FELT VERY UNSAFE, AS I NEVER KNEW WHEN THE BRAKES WOULD EFFECTIVELY SLOW THE VEHICLE. EVEN WHEN PUSHING HARD, AS IN A PANIC STOP, MY LEGS ARE ONLY SO LONG. SEVERAL WEEKS AGO, I HAD A COUPLE OF INCIDENCES, WHERE MY 2009 TOYOTA CAMRY GEAR LEVER WOULD NOT SHIFT FROM PARK TO DRIVE. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS OF TURNING ON/OFF IGNITION, DEPRESSING BRAKES, AND TUGGING LEVER, THE GEAR WOULD THEN SHIFT FROM PARK TO DRIVE. ON 08-01-2010, I WENT TO THE MALL AND SPENT SEVERAL HOURS THERE. WHEN I TURNED ON THE IGNITION, FEET ON THE BRAKES, THE SHIFT LEVER WOULD NOT BUDGE. AFTER 30-45 MINUTES OF TRYING TO SHIFT THE LEVER, I DECIDED TO CALL MALL SECURITY TO CALL FOR A TOW. THE SECURITY GUARD SUGGESTED THAT HE SHOULD GIVE IT A TRY, "THE LEVER SHIFTED FROM PARK TO DRIVE". I WAS VERY CONCERNED. IN THE PREVIOUS INCIDENCES, IT NEVER TOOK SO LONG FOR THE LEVER TO SHIFT. THE INCIDENCES HAVE OCCURRED FIRST THING IN THE MORNING; AFTER WORK OR AFTER THE CAR HAS BEEN SITTING FOR A NUMBER OF HOURS. ON 08-02-2010, I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP, FIRST THING IN THE MORNING; I WAS THERE AT 6:35AM. AFTER I EXPLAINED THE ABOVE, THEY INSPECTED AND TEST DROVE THE CAR. THE SERVICE PERSON CAME BACK TO ME AND INFORMED ME THAT SOMETHING MUST HAVE SPILLED ON/IN THE GEAR BOX. I ABSOLUTELY DENIED THAT ASSUMPTION. HE THEN STATED THAT THEY WOULD TAKE APART THE GEAR BOX. AGAIN, HE CAME BACK AND STATED THAT SOMETHING STICKY WAS FOUND "ON TOP" AND GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE FOR REPLACING GEAR SHAFT. AGAIN, I ABSOLUTELY DENIED THAT ANYTHING FELL ON OR IN THE GEAR BOX. AND, WHY WAS I NOT SUMMONED TO LOOK AND THIS STICKY RESIDUE. HE THEN CALLED THE SERVICE MANAGER, WHO ATTEMPTED TO EXPLAIN THAT HE COULD NOT JUSTIFY REPLACING GEAR SHAFT UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE THE PROBLEM IS NOT BEING DETECTED AT THE PRESENT TIME. AND, THERE IS ABOUT 7 OR 8 REASONS WHY THE GEAR LEVER WOULD NOT SHIFT. HOWEVER, THEY GAVE ME A QUOTE TO REPLACE GEAR SHAFT. I WAS ABLE TO SPEAK TO ONE OF THE TECHNICIANS, WITHOUT THE MANAGER BEING PRESENT, WHO STATED THAT THERE WAS SOMETHING DEFINITELY WRONG WITH THE GEAR SHAFT. *TR

DRIVING WEST IN A RENTAL CAR ON ST. CHARLES ROCK RD. I CHANGED LANES FROM THE RIGHT WESTBOUND LANE INTO THE L-WEST LANE AFTER CHECKING MY MIRRORS. WHILE I DID THAT I GOT HIT BY UNSEEN CAR (UNFAMILIAR BLIND SPOT?) IN THE REAR LEFT, WHICH CHANGED CAR'S HEADING TOWARDS THE LEFT (SOUTHWEST), ONTO A TRAJECTORY CROSSING THE EASTBOUND LANES. I IMMEDIATELY AND FULLY HIT THE BRAKE PEDAL BUT THE BRAKES DIDN'T RESPOND (PEDAL SEEMED STUCK), AND THE CAR CONTINUED TO MOVE AT SPEED (NO ACCELERATION) TOWARDS THE RESTAURANT ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF SCRR. I TRIED TO TURN WHEEL TO THE LEFT TO AVOID THE CURB, AND PERHAPS PULL A U-TURN, BUT THE WHEEL DIDN'T BUDGE EITHER; ALL THE WHILE I KEPT PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, EXCEPT FOR ONE OR TWO PUMPING ATTEMPTS TO SEE IF THE BRAKES WOULD KICK IN, BUT NO NOTICEABLE CHANGE IN PEDAL RESPONSE OR BRAKING ACTION ENSUED. THE CAR STAYED ON THE COURSE IT GOT ONTO BY THE PRECEDING COLLISION, CROSSED THE EASTBOUND LANES TOWARD THE RESTAURANT, JUMPED THE CURB, WENT THROUGH A GREEN STRIP OF LOW (1-2') JUNIPER BUSHES ONTO THE PAVED RESTAURANT GROUNDS, AND PUSHED A PICNIC TABLE INTO A BUSINESS SIGN BEFORE COMING TO A FULL STOP AGAINST THE BUILDING. THERE WAS NO CLEAR DAMAGE TO THE BUILDING ITSELF. I DO NOT RECALL HAVING TURNED OFF THE IGNITION AT ANY TIME DURING THIS INCIDENT, EITHER WHILE DRIVING OR AFTER I CAME TO A STOP. I RECALL HAVING TO RESTART THE CAR TO LOWER THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR WINDOW, BECAUSE THE DOOR ITSELF WAS BLOCKED BY ANOTHER PICNIC TABLE. I DO NOT RECALL ANYTHING ODD WITH THE IGNITION KEY WHEN I RESTARTED (LIKE IT WAS STILL IN THE ON POSITION). BASED ON THE UNRESPONSIVENESS OF BOTH BRAKES AND STEERING WHEEL IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE COLLISION, IT'S MY IMPRESSION THAT THERE MAY HAVE BEEN A GLITCH IN THE CAR'S ELECTRICAL/CONTROL SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE BRAKE SYSTEM WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE HAD NOT RECURRED BUT THERE WAS A ROCKING NOISE IN THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO ANOTHER AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE MOTOR MOUNT WAS CRACKED; YET, THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. ABOUT THREE QUARTERS OF THE WAY DRIVING DOWN A HILL, THERE WERE NOT BRAKES AT ALL. THERE WAS PLENTY OF PEDAL, BUT THE CONSUMER WAS UNABLE TO SLOW OR STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER NOTICED THE SPEEDOMETER READ 83 MPH. FINALLY, THE CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN A LITTLE BY USING BOTH FEET TO APPLY THE BRAKES.

MY CAR, TOYOTA CAMRY 2009, HAD A SAME PROBLEM WITH THAT SUDDEN ACCELERATION BACK IN 2008. THE CAR WAS, OF COURSE, BRAND NEW, AND I HAD THAT SAME EXPERIENCE - ALL OF SUDDEN ACCELERATION. IT WAS AFTER I WAS FINISHED THE ALL DUTIES FOR THE DAY, AND I WAS HEAD TO MY HOME. WHEN I JUST DROVE ON THE HIGHWAY, THE RPM WENT UP SO QUICKLY AND SUDDENLY, AND EVEN I STEPPED ON THE BRAKES SEVERAL TIMES. BUT THE RPM HAD NEVER BEEN GO DOWN AND STOP. SO I MADE THE DECISION TO MAKE THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT TO NEUTRAL, AND IT WORKED AT THAT TIME. AT THAT TIME, I WAS IN LIKE COUNTRY SIDE IN FORT GORDON, GEORGIA, AND NOW I'M IN SOUTH KOREA TO PERFORM THE DUTY HERE. AT THAT TIME OF THAT INCIDENT, I THOUGHT IT COULD HAPPEN MAYBE ONE TIME.. VERY ONE TIME.. HOWEVER, WHEN I READ THE CURRENT NEWSPAPER ARTICLE.. I FEEL VERY TERRIBLE ABOUT THIS.. BECAUSE NOW MY WIFE AND MY 3YEAR OLD SON RIDE IN TOYOTA CAMRY.. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN THE VEHICLE HIT A BUMP IN THE ROAD OR AN ICE PATCH THE BRAKES FAILED TO FUNCTION PROPERLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING 30 MPH AT THE TIME. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 13,000 MILES. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 19,000.
I PURCHASED A 2009 CAMRY HYBRID THIS PAST SUMMER AND WITHIN A MONTH, NOTICED PROBLEMS WITH OCCASIONAL BRAKING AND ACCELERATION ISSUES. I ORIGINALLY THOUGHT THAT PERHAPS THIS WAS THE HYBRID TECHNOLOGY, BUT AT TIMES I HAVE EXPERIENCED SOME NEAR MISSES AND HAVE BEEN VERY CONCERNED WITH THE RECENT REPORTS OF LOST LIFE. I FILED A COMPLAINT ON THE TOYOTA.COM WEBSITE ON FEBRUARY 9TH, 2010 AND HAVE RECEIVED NO RESPONSE SINCE THEN. I AM DISAPPOINTED THAT THE CAMRY HYBRID WAS NOT INCLUDED WITH THE LATEST PRIUS RECALL AND FEEL THAT TOYOTA NEEDS TO INVESTIGATE WHAT I BELIEVE TO BE A SOFTWARE/ELECTRONICS ISSUE. I HAVE BEEN IN SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT AND SALES FOR THE PAST 15 YEARS AND HAVE NEVER BEEN IN A CAR ACCIDENT SINCE RECEIVING MY LICENSE. BUT SINCE PURCHASING THIS CAR, MY FIRST TOYOTA, I DO NOT FEEL AS SAFE AS I HAVE IN MY GM'S AND FORD'S OVER THE YEARS. WHAT I AM EXPERIENCING IS A FORWARD LURCH WHEN BRAKING FROM 50 MPH TO A QUICK STOP/TRAFFIC LIGHT AND THE GAS ENGINE IS ENGAGED. WHEN BRAKE IS APPLIED, THE CAR SLOWS, THEN THERE IS A QUICK REVVING OF THE ENGINE, THEN AN UPSHIFT PRIOR TO A DOWNSHIFT WHEN THE ELECTRONICS/BATTERY TAKES OVER. THIS HAS CAUSED SOME NEAR MISSES FROM A REAR END COLLISION, AS THE CAR APPEARS TO STOP, BUT THEN LURCHES FORWARD. I HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED THIS FORWARD LURCH, WHEN ACCELERATING AT HIGHER SPEEDS (30-50 MPH)FROM A STOP LIGHT, AS IF THERE IS A DELAY BETWEEN THE ELECTRONICS TO THE GAS ENGINE. THIS HAS CAUSED THE CAR TO ACCELERATE RAPIDLY ON OCCASION, CAUSING ME TO BRAKE TO SLOW IT DOWN. PLEASE HAVE THIS SOFTWARE DEFECT LOOKED INTO, AS I BELIEVE THIS RECENT RECALL SHOULD INCLUDE THE CAMRY HYBRIDS AS WELL AND AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. *TR

MY TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID HAS THE EXACT SAME GOING OVER BUMPS AND POTHOLE PROBLEMS THAT IS BEING DESCRIBED FOR THE PRIUS, HOWEVER, I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET IT ADDRESSED. DURING BRAKING, IF THE CAR GOES OVER A NON-SMOOTH SURFACE IN THE ROAD, THE CAR SPEEDS UP UNTIL ALL FOUR WHEELS ARE ON SOLID GROUND AGAIN, USUALLY A SHORT DURATION. THIS IS SCARY AND DANGEROUS AND I AM LUCKY THAT I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT. THIS HAS BEEN A CONTINUOUS PROBLEM THAT THE DEALER DIDN'T RECOGNIZE WHEN I HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT IT. I OWN A TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID, 2009. I AM ALSO EXPERIENCING THE SAME BRAKE FAILURE PROBLEMS THAT THE TOYOTA 2010 PRIUS IS BEING RECALLED FOR. I NOTICED THAT WHEN BRAKING ON DOWN SLOPED ROADS, SLIPPERY ROADS, OR BUMPY ROADS, THE CAR SEEMS TO ACCELERATE WHILE BRAKING. THIS OCCURS FOR 1-2 SECONDS. IT IS A VERY SCARY FEELING. LAST WEEK I NARROWLY AVOIDED HITTING 2 CARS DURING A MINOR SNOW FALL BECAUSE WHILE MAKING A SLOW TURN OR BRAKING THE CAR AGAIN ACCELERATED AND THE BRAKING SYSTEM FAILED MOMENTARILY. I VERBALLY ASKED THE DEALER THAT I PURCHASED THE CAR FROM, AND MY NEIGHBORHOOD DEALER 2 WEEKS AGO WHILE MAKING A SCHEDULED 15K MILE SERVICE VISIT ABOUT THE PROBLEM, BUT THEY WEREN'T AWARE OF IT AND SUGGESTED THAT IT COULD BE THE HYBRID SYSTEM KICKING IN. A FEW DAYS LATER I HEARD OF THE PRIUS RECALL AND WAS SHOCKED WHEN I READ THE REASONS BEHIND IT. I AM NOW SCHEDULED FOR A SERVICE VISIT TOMORROW AT TOYOTA. THE TOYOTA PRIUS BRAKING ISSUE IS DESCRIBED AS THE FOLLOWING: "MOMENTARY LOSS OF BRAKING CAPABILITY WHILE TRAVELING OVER UNEVEN ROAD SURFACES, POTHOLES OR BUMPS." I LIVE IN THE CHICAGO AREA AND RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2009 TOYOTA CAMRY SE WITH 35K MILES ON IT IN NOV 2009. IN LATE DECEMBER I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK - IT WAS RAINY AND ABOUT 30 DEGREES OUTSIDE AND THE ROADS WERE A BIT SLIPPERY. THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME (FAR AHEAD) APPLIED ITS BRAKES TO MAKE A LEFT TURN. I WENT TO APPLY MY BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN AND THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP! I DID NOT FEEL THE BRAKES APPLY AND SLOW MY VEHICLE. I PUSHED DOWN ON THE BRAKE HARDER AND IT DID NOTHING. IT WAS NOT UNTIL I LIFTED MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE AND REAPPLIED IT THAT THE CAR STARTED TO SLOW. LUCKILY I WAS NOT TOO CLOSE TO THE CAR IN FRONT. THE NEXT DAY, I WENT TO THE MY LOCAL MECHANIC AND PAID HIM TO LOOK AT MY BRAKES TO MAKE SURE THEY WERE SAFE. HE DID NOT SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE PADS OR ROTORS. YESTERDAY THE SAME THING HAPPENED. THE WEATHER WAS A MIX OF RAIN AND ICE AND ABOUT 20 DEGREES. I AM NOT AFRAID TO BUY MY NEW CAR AND FEEL SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE.
