WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED AND PLACED IN REVERSE THE ENGINE ACCELERATED. NOT BEING SURE WHAT WAS GOING ON WITH THE CAR, I KEPT SUBSTANTIAL PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE AND PUT TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL. WHEN I DID THE ENGINE SPEED PROCEEDED TO RUN AWAY. I QUICKLY JUST TURNED THE IGNITION OFF. I PLACED THE TRANSMISSION INTO PARK, AND RESTARTED THE ENGINE, AND IT RAN NORMALLY THEREAFTER. THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS TIMES IN THE PAST YEAR WHEN THE ENGINE SURGED MOMENTARILY WHEN THE BRAKE WAS APPLIED, BUT IT WAS MOMENTARY, AND NOT THOUGHT SIGNIFICANT. THESE EVENTS OCCURRED WHEN SLOWING TO A STOP OR PARKING. THIS MOST RECENT AND SIGNIFICANT EVENT OCCURRED AFTER A SHORT TRIP, APPROX. 10 MILES. THE CAR HAD BEEN PARKED FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES. WEATHER WAS CLEAR AND TEMPERATURE IN THE 70'S. IT IS A 4 CYLINDER CAMRY, 2006 WITH ABOUT 155K MILES. THE CAR HAS NOT HAD ANY MODIFICATIONS OR MAJOR REPAIRS. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE STRAP ON THE GAS TANK HEAT SHIELD RUSTED AND BROKE. THE CONTACT STATED THERE WAS A RATTLING SOUND COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE WHEN IT WAS DRIVEN, BUT THE TANK DID NOT FALL. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THIS YEAR MODEL AND THE PART IS ON BACK ORDER. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 27,600. PROBLEM RESOLVED - STRAP WAS REPLACED WITH A REDESIGNED STRAP CANCEL REQUEST. UPDATED 10/03/2011 *LN *TR

INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6) TOYOTA ACCELERATION COMPLAINT MARCH 24, 2010 ODI NUMBER 10321792. SAFETY ISSUE - 2006 TOYOTA CAMRY LE ON GOING PROBLEM - THE VEHICLE'S ENGINE WILL REV UP AND LURCH FORWARD WHILE AT A DEAD STOP. ENGINE WILL ACCELERATE AND LURCH FORWARD ON ITS OWN. SENSATION APPEARS AS IF THERE IS ANOTHER VEHICLE DIRECTLY BEHIND OURS PUSHING IT. ENGINE IS SPECIFICATIONS UP TO STANDARDS. IT MANIFESTS AT ALL SPEEDS, BUT MORE NOTICEABLE AT LOW SPEEDS AND AT STOPS. MY WIFE WAS STOPPED AND IDLING AT A TRAFFIC STOP SIGN ON EAST VESTAL FACING EASTBOUND AT AND THE INTERSECTION OF PLEASANTON ROAD HERE IN SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS. SHE WAS WAITING TO MAKE A RIGHT HAND TURN ONTO NORTHBOUND PLEASANTON ROAD. WHILE SHE WAS STOPPED A NORTHBOUND BICYCLIST TRAVELING ON THE SIDEWALK TO HER LEFT BEGAN CROSSING THE STREET. HE WAS RIDING UPON HIS BIKE AND WHEN HIS BIKE WAS RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE VEHICLE THE AUTOMOBILE LURCHED FORWARD AND KNOCKED HIM DOWN. MY WIFE HAD HER FOOT ON THE BRAKE HOWEVER; THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED VERY QUICKLY THAT SHE COULD NOT REACT FAST ENOUGH TO PREVENT THE AUTOMOBILE FROM HITTING THE BICYCLIST. THE BICYCLIST ASSURED MY WIFE THAT HE WAS NOT INJURED. HE HAD CHECKED HIS BICYCLE AND IT WAS NOT DAMAGED AND THAT THE POLICE DID NOT NEED TO BE CALLED. THE ACCIDENT SO UPSET MY WIFE THAT SHE ENDED GOING BACK HOME AND NOT GOING TO WORK THAT DAY. THE CONTACTED THE TOYOTA SERVICE TECHNICIAN ASSURED US THAT THIS ACTIVITY WAS NORMAL FOR TOYOTAS. THIS IS WHY I AM REPORTING THIS PROBLEM. THIS PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE SURFACED AND ADDRESSED. I AM SURE THAT THERE ARE OTHER TOYOTA CAMRY OWNERS THAT ARE SUFFERING FROM THE SAME PROBLEM AS WE ARE. I HAVE TODAY CONTACTED TOYOTA CORPORATION HERE IN THE UNITED STATES AND THE COMPANY HAS NOT ADDRESSED MY CONCERN OR EVEN ACKNOWLEDGES RECEIVING MY COMPLAINT. 2006 TOYOTA SOLARA SUDDENLY ACCELERATED WHEN LEAVING A PARKING LOT SPACE. STARTED A CHAIN REACTION ULTIMATELY INVOLVING THE SOLARA AND FOUR OTHER CARS. NO PERSONAL INJURY SINCE ALL CARS EXCEPT THE SOLARA WERE PARKED. ESTIMATE $35-40K IN PROPERTY DAMAGE. AFTER REPAIRS, TOOK THE SOLARA TO A TOYOTA DEALER WHO SAID THE PROBLEM WAS A CARBON BUILD UP IN THE THROTTLE SYSTEM. *TR

2006 CAMRY PROBLEM 1: -- SYMPTOM: WHEN FILLING UP THE TANK AND SETTING THE GAS PUMP HANDLE TO AUTOMATICALLY FILL THE TANK, (I.E., SETTING THE SWITCH ON THE HANDLE), CANNOT BE DONE (THE PUMP SWITCH POPS). (THIS PROBLEM REPEATED AT MULTIPLE DIFFERENT STATIONS OVER SEVERAL CONSECUTIVE FILL-UPS.) AFTER A DIAGNOSTIC, THE DEALER SAID THE CANISTER NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. ANOTHER GAS STATION ATTENDANT SAID THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM ON MANY LATE MODEL CAMRYS (HIS STATION IS DOWN THE BLOCK FROM A DEALER SO HE SAYS HE HAS SEEN A FEW OF THESE), CAUSED WHEN THE TANK IS OVERFILLED AND FLOODING GAS INTO THE CANISTER, RUINING IT, AND ULTIMATELY CAUSING THE FILL-UP PROBLEMS DESCRIBED ABOVE. ITS SCHEDULED TO BE FIXED TOMORROW, BUT WONDERING IF THIS IS A DESIGN/PRODUCT DEFECT, THAT WILL REOCCUR IN THE FUTURE (ESP AFTER THE WARRANTY ENDS.) PLEASE DO NOT ADVISE TO NOT OVERFILL THE TANK, FOR 2 REASONS: 1) I LIVE IN NJ, WHERE ONLY STATION ATTENDANTS ARE LEGALLY ALLOWED TO FILL THE TANK, SO I HAVE LITTLE/NO CONTROL OVER IT. 2) THIS SHOULD NOT EVER BE A PROBLEM, IN GENERAL, EVEN IF THE TANK IS OVERFILLED AND GAS GUSHES ONTO THE GROUND. PROBLEM 2: WINDSHIELD CONSTANTLY FOGS UP; NEED TO USE DEFROSTER IN ALL TYPES OF WEATHER, ESP RAINING. I HAD THIS PROBLEM ON MY 84 COROLLA; BIG PAIN. PROBLEM 3: SOMEWHAT JERKY RIDE, NOTICED WHEN COASTING TO A STOP, AT APPROX 5-15 MPH, THEN THE TRAFFIC LIGHT TURNS GREEN, AND START TO PRESS THE GAS, THE CAR JERKS AND LUNGES; SEEMS TO ME THAT ITS TRYING TO FIND THE RIGHT GEAR, THEN IT DOES, AND THIS HAPPENS. THOUGHT THE PROBLEM WAS ME, BUT OTHER DRIVERS OF MY CAR NOTICED THE SAME THING. DEALER SAID THAT THE CAR IS PROGRAMMED TO ADJUST TO THE DRIVER'S HABITS (COMPUTERS!!), AND MAY BE CONFUSED WHEN DRIVERS CHANGE, EXHIBITING THIS PROBLEM. *JB
