Component: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:FLOOR SHIFT
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2001-2008 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles manufactured March 31, 2001, to September 1, 2009. The affected vehicles are equipped with either a 2.3L or 3.0L engine and have had their CD4E transmission replaced with remanufactured one that was rebuilt between June 11, 2015 through July 15, 2015. These service repair part transmissions have a shift lever bolt that may not be properly tightened. As a result, the shift control lever could disengage from the transmission without warning.
Risk: If the shift lever disengages from the transmission, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. Should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the gear selection indicator may show that the transmission is in the "PARK" position, but the vehicle transmission may not actually be in the "PARK" gear position. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the transmissions and either tighten the manual shift lever bolt or replace the manual shift lever assembly. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 23, 2015. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S28.

Component: SUSPENSION:FRONT:WHEEL BEARING
The Timken Company (Timken) is recalling certain aftermarket front wheel bearings, part number 510072, sold from January 22, 2015, to May 21, 2015, to be used as service parts on 2001-2012 Ford Escape, 2001-2011 Mazda Tribute, and 2005-2011 Mercury Mariner vehicles. The affected wheel bearings have incorrect dimensions of a 42mm bore, 76mm outer dimension, and 39mm width, instead of a 42mm bore, 78mm outer dimension and a 45mm width.
Risk: Use of an incorrectly sized wheel bearing can adversely affect the braking and steering of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Timken has begun notifying distributors who will offer purchasers replacement wheel bearings, free of charge. The recall began on May 21, 2015. Owners may contact Timken customer service at 1-866-984-6536.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2001-2004 Escape vehicles manufactured October 22, 1999, through January 23, 2004, originally sold, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. These vehicles may experience excessive corrosion at the forward attachment of the lower control arm.
Risk: A separation of the lower control arm can result in a significant loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install a newly designed reinforcement cross-brace, free of charge. The recall began on May 30, 2014. Owners may contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S02.
NHTSA Campaign: 12V353000
Component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Ford Motor Company is recalling certain model year 2001 through 2004 Escape vehicles equipped with 3.0L V6 engines and speed control manufactured from October 22, 1999, through January 23, 2004. Inadequate clearance between the engine cover and the speed control cable connector could result in a stuck throttle when the accelerator pedal is fully or almost-fully depressed. This risk exists regardless of whether or not speed control (cruise control) is used.
Risk: A stuck throttle may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop or slow the vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death.
Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles by increasing the engine cover clearance, free of charge. The safety recall began August 3, 2012. Remedy parts are expected to be available in mid-August 2012. Until then dealers will disconnect the speed control cable as an interim remedy, if parts are not available at the time of an owner's service appointment. Owners may contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.

Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 1078)
Suspension →5 issues
While driving on the highway and hitting a bump, you heard a loud bang and suddenly lost most steering control, though you managed to safely exit the highway. A mechanic found that the passenger-side sub-frame (a structural support component under the vehicle) had broken and was hanging about 6 inches lower than normal. Although Ford had apparently already serviced a recall for frame corrosion on your vehicle, the dealer said they couldn't help with this sub-frame breakage despite a separate recall covering this exact issue.

While driving, your car made an abnormal noise and drifted to the left. A mechanic found that the subframe (the metal frame that supports the suspension) had rusted significantly. This type of rust can affect how your car handles and stays stable on the road. Fixing this would likely require replacing or repairing the rusted subframe.

While backing up in a parking lot, your passenger-side wheel collapsed inward into the wheel well, and you heard an abnormal noise before shutting off the engine. The dealer diagnosed this as related to a known Ford recall (campaign 14V165000) but refused to repair it because your vehicle exceeded the recall mileage and age limits. The repair would likely involve replacing suspension components related to the wheel assembly and structural support.

Your car jerks and swerves, especially at higher speeds, due to problems with the lower control arm on the driver's side and the subframe. The issue starts at low speeds but gets worse as you drive faster, creating a safety concern. Fixing this will require replacing or repairing the damaged lower control arm and potentially addressing subframe damage.

Your front driver's side lower control arm has loosened multiple times and needed to be retightened to proper specifications—this has happened four separate times. Even though your vehicle was previously repaired under a Ford recall (campaign 14V165000), the problem has come back. Your car failed a state inspection because of this recurring issue. The fix will likely involve inspecting the control arm connection, replacing any worn fasteners or components, and ensuring everything is properly torqued to manufacturer specifications.

Unknown Or Other →2 issues
Shortly after purchasing your used 2002 Ford Escape, the steering suddenly locked up while driving home from the grocery store. Your brakes became unresponsive at the same time, and the engine lost all power, causing the vehicle to slide to the side of the road. The engine restarted immediately and ran normally, though it stalled a couple more times at stop signs before restarting without issue. You've noticed a vibration in the vehicle since the incident and are concerned something may have been damaged internally.

Engine →1 issue
Your engine keeps dying unexpectedly while driving, even after replacing the engine and transmission multiple times. This is a serious safety concern since your car can shut off without warning. The underlying cause may be related to a fuel delivery, ignition, or electrical system issue that needs proper diagnosis.

Power Train →1 issue
Your accelerator pedal became stuck while driving at 40 MPH, and you couldn't release it even with forceful effort. You had to shift the ignition to off to stop the vehicle, which left you unable to move safely off the road and required police assistance with traffic. A mechanic was able to disengage the pedal, though the root cause wasn't diagnosed. The fix will likely involve inspecting and replacing the accelerator pedal assembly or cleaning/repairing the throttle cable or electronic throttle control mechanism.

Exterior Lighting,structure,service Brakes →1 issue
Your 2002 Ford Escape has several warning lights that stay on even though you've replaced the battery and alternator — including the ABS, radiator, and battery lights. Your rear brake drums are sticking, causing the vehicle to drag when accelerating, and the back hatch latch frequently gets stuck and won't open. Additionally, interior dome lights caught fire and melted the plastic housing. The vehicle has significant underbody rust consistent with known suspension corrosion issues from that model year, and the ABS was recalled and serviced by a Ford dealer but the warning light remains on. Addressing these issues will likely require a full diagnostic scan of the electrical system, inspection and possible replacement of the brake drum assembly, repair of the hatch latch mechanism, and replacement of the melted interior light housing.

Steering,unknown Or Other,engine →1 issue
The rubber and metal mounts that hold your engine in place have rusted away, allowing the engine to sag down and make contact with your steering system while driving. This can affect how your car steers and may cause additional damage if not repaired. The fix will likely involve replacing the engine mounts and inspecting the steering components for any damage.

Electrical System →1 issue
Your car's ignition key got stuck in the ignition switch and wouldn't come out, even though the engine was running and the car was in Park. The problem got worse over time. A mechanic diagnosed a failed ignition lock cylinder that needs to be replaced. You'll need to have the ignition lock cylinder removed and replaced with a new one.

Air Bags,seat Belts →1 issue
Your passenger side airbag warning light and seat belt warning light are flashing on the dashboard. Sometimes these warning lights stay on continuously instead of turning off. This indicates a problem with either the airbag system, seat belt pretensioner, or the sensors that detect them.

Suspension,structure →1 issue
You're hearing a loud noise from your suspension while driving at various speeds. A mechanic diagnosed a worn control arm that needs to be replaced. Even though your vehicle was previously serviced under a Ford recall in 2014 for a similar structural issue, the problem has returned. Fixing this will require replacing the control arm assembly.

Electrical System,service Brakes,engine →1 issue
Your car won't start and the brake warning light is on. You discovered water inside the fuse box, which is likely preventing the engine from starting and causing the brake system warning. The dealership was contacted but didn't diagnose or repair the issue. The fix will likely involve drying out or replacing the fuse box and checking for water damage in the electrical system.

Steering,air Bags,wheels →1 issue
Your car is having multiple problems: the gears are difficult to shift into the correct position, the lights are draining power and going out prematurely, and the steering wheel is becoming hard to turn during normal driving. These issues have been happening since at least the time of a crash involving your vehicle.
Parts you may need:
As an Amazon Associate, MyCarTSB earns from qualifying purchases.
Service Brakes →1 issue
Your brakes are making a metal grinding or scraping sound, and the brake pedal feels hard to press—you often have to push it all the way down to stop. When driving at around 40 mph and applying the brakes, you hear the scraping noise and sometimes feel the pedal trying to lock up.

Suspension,air Bags →1 issue
Your lower control arms were replaced in December 2013 for $1,279.79, but a recall for the same part was announced four months later and your vehicle was excluded from it. Additionally, your airbag warning light stays on continuously and won't turn off, which the owner believes may be a defect. The combination of the control arm issue and persistent airbag warning is causing concern about airbag safety.
