Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 383)
Fuel System, Gasoline →5 issues
Your fuel tank is leaking at the seam, which is a serious safety hazard regardless of where the leak occurs. The dealership is refusing to cover the repair under warranty because the leak isn't on the tank bottom, but you'll need to replace the fuel tank, fuel pump assembly, and possibly other parts at a cost around $1,000. This repair involves removing and replacing the fuel tank and associated components.

You're noticing a strong gasoline smell inside and around your vehicle. Investigation revealed fuel is leaking from the fuel tank located under the center of the car, apparently due to rust and corrosion eating through the tank. You aren't able to drive the vehicle safely until this is addressed. The fix will require replacing the fuel tank.

Your sway bar broke off because the frame underneath it has severely rusted and rotted through on both sides of the rear end. You were told the back end of your vehicle could separate from the rest of the car at any moment. The frame will likely need extensive repair or replacement to safely reattach the sway bar and restore structural integrity.

Your vehicle's right rear frame has rusted completely through, and the stabilizer bar has rusted off the frame. This is a structural integrity issue that affects the vehicle's stability and safety. The frame will need to be inspected by a professional and may require welding, reinforcement, or replacement of the affected section.

Your steering column doesn't lock when you turn off the engine. Your car is also having trouble starting—it starts immediately with a jump, or sometimes if you rock the vehicle or push it a few feet. When the engine is warm and the car has sat for about an hour, it won't start, which suggests a possible electrical connection issue. Additionally, your blower motor has stopped working, so while your heat and air conditioning produce temperature, the air won't blow out of the vents. These issues may be related to electrical or wiring problems and could require inspection of the ignition system, battery connections, and blower motor circuit.

Steering,engine,fuel/propulsion System →2 issues
While driving on the highway in hot weather, boiling antifreeze leaked from the heater core and sprayed out of the dashboard vents onto both you and your passenger, causing first and second-degree burns. You had to keep your foot on the accelerator pedal while driving through the scalding liquid spray to safely exit the highway. The issue appears to be a failure of the heater core to safely contain the hot coolant.

While driving on a hot day, boiling coolant leaked from the heater core and sprayed out of the dashboard vents onto you and your passenger, causing first and second-degree burns. You had to keep your foot on the accelerator pedal to maintain control and reach a safe exit, but the scalding liquid continued to burn your foot. The coolant should have been safely contained to prevent this type of injury.

Electrical System →2 issues
Your car stalled unexpectedly while driving in traffic on multiple occasions. After researching recalls, you found that a known issue with the C123 and C124 wire harness may be responsible for the stalling problem. Even after having the engine replaced, the car continued to stall during a test drive. The fix likely involves inspecting and replacing the faulty wire harness components that control engine operation.

Your 1998 Kia Sportage lost power while driving at 25 mph, and a "Hold" warning light appeared on the dashboard. A mechanic made a repair, but the problem came back. The mechanic suggested it might be related to a known electrical wiring issue (NHTSA recall 99V325000), though it's unclear if your vehicle was included in that recall. The fix will likely involve inspecting and repairing the vehicle's electrical wiring system.

Suspension,structure →1 issue
Your Sportage's rear frame has extensive rust and rot that has eaten completely through the metal, particularly in the rear cross member area. Since you purchased the vehicle in 2012, this deterioration has happened rapidly and has compromised the structural integrity of the frame, making the vehicle unsafe for driving, towing, or selling to someone else. The rusted frame could fail unexpectedly and create a safety hazard. Fixing this will require professional welding or complete frame replacement to restore structural integrity.

Seat Belts →1 issue
Your seatbelt won't extend far enough to fasten, making it impossible to wear your seatbelt safely. The dealer refused to repair it without charging you. Since wearing a seatbelt is required by law and this appears to be a manufacturing defect, you may want to contact Kia directly about warranty coverage or safety recalls.

Structure →1 issue
Your car's frame has severe rust and corrosion at the rear where the axle connects, and it's at risk of collapsing. This could lead to frame failure if not repaired immediately. The affected area will need to be cleaned, treated, and reinforced or replaced to restore structural integrity.

Your 1998 Kia Sportage has a fuel tank leak coming from the top of the tank, which matches a known safety recall (KT2006050901) for 1996-2002 Sportage models. Your local Kia dealership says your vehicle isn't eligible for the recall repair, but another dealership believes it should be covered. The fix would likely involve inspecting and repairing or replacing the fuel tank filler neck or seal.

Tires →1 issue
While driving on the freeway at 65 mph, your passenger rear tire suddenly blew out. The tire dealership found that the tire failed due to tread separation, where the rubber tread peeled away from the tire's inner structure. This was a Kumho brand tire in size 205/75R15. The fix will involve replacing the failed tire with a new one and inspecting other tires for similar wear patterns.
