NHTSA Campaign: 99V325000
Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES. THE WIRES CONNECTED TO THE C123 AND C124 CONNECTORS CAN BE PUT UNDER TENSION BY MOVEMENT OF THE ENGINE, THUS PULLING THE WIRES AND CONNECTORS, LOOSENING THEM AND RESULTING IN A LOSS OF CIRCUIT CONTINUITY.
Risk: THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE ENGINE STALLING, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Fix: DEALERS WILL INSTALL SPRING CLIPS TO LOCK THE CONNECTORS TOGETHER. IN ADDITION, THE DEALERS WILL BE INSTRUCTED TO SOLDER A SPLICE IN THE WIRE HARNESS.
NHTSA Campaign: 04V305000
Component: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:BUCKLE ASSEMBLY
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE FRONT SAFETY BELT BUCKLES MAY EMIT A "CLICK" SOUND DURING THE BUCKLING PROCESS THAT IS SIMILAR TO THE SOUND EMITTED WHEN A BUCKLE IS BEING LATCHED, WHEN IT IS NOT.
Risk: THE LATCH CAN THEN PULL OUT OF THE BUCKLE WHEN TENSION IS APPLIED.
Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE BOTH FRONT SEAT BELT BUCKLES. THE RECALL BEGAN AUGUST 16, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT KIA AT 1-800-333-4542.
NHTSA Campaign: 98V222000
Component: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES WITHOUT AN ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS). THE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT COUPLING CAN CONTACT A HYDRAULIC BRAKE PIPE CAUSING FLUID LEAKAGE.
Risk: THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE A LOSS OF REAR BRAKE INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, INCREASE THE CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE BRAKE PIPE AND STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT COUPLING.
NHTSA Campaign: 09E025000
Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS

Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 349)
Structure →7 issues
While driving at 40 mph, your vehicle began shaking violently, causing you to lose control. After regaining control and stopping, you noticed corrosion on the rear end of the vehicle. This structural issue caused a serious loss of vehicle control and should be inspected by a mechanic to determine if the corrosion compromised the frame or suspension components.

While driving on the interstate and hitting a bump, your car began swaying side to side, making it very difficult to control. Upon inspection, you discovered severe rust damage to the frame — the passenger side is nearly gone and the driver side has significant holes and missing pieces. This structural damage poses a serious safety risk and likely requires complete frame replacement or professional structural repair.

While driving at 50 mph, your 1999 Kia Sportage began swaying back and forth. A mechanic found that the chassis on the rear passenger side had rusted severely, and they determined the damage was not repairable. This structural rust failure occurred at 88,000 miles. Addressing this issue would likely require extensive welding or chassis replacement to restore structural integrity.

Your 1999 Kia Sportage's frame has extensive rust and rot that makes it unsafe to drive and unable to pass inspection. You've been warned that the gas tank could fall off if you hit a bump, creating a serious safety hazard. Addressing this would require extensive frame repair or replacement, which is typically not economically viable on a vehicle this age.

Fuel System, Gasoline →4 issues
After filling your gas tank, you noticed a strong gasoline smell. A mechanic found gas leaking from your fuel line and said the EVAP emission control system had malfunctioned, mentioning there was a recall for this issue. However, Kia told you your vehicle's VIN number didn't match their recall records. You believe the fuel tank may have rusted due to exposure to snow and salt, creating a safety hazard that Kia should address.

After filling up your gas tank, you notice a strong fuel smell inside and outside the vehicle. An independent mechanic couldn't find the source, but a manufacturer recall exists for the fuel system—though the dealer says it's expired and the replacement tank isn't in stock. The problem got progressively worse, and a later inspection revealed rust in the fuel tank and fuel pump that made the vehicle unsafe to drive. The fix would involve replacing the fuel tank and fuel pump assembly.

Fuel System, Gasoline,structure →2 issues
Your 1999 Kia Sportage has experienced severe rust damage underneath, with the frame separating at joints, large holes rusted through the frame and fuel tank shield, and door panels rusted away. The fuel tank is heavily corroded and could rupture or leak if struck, creating a potential safety hazard. There was apparently a service campaign for the fuel tank, but the dealer refused to address it because your car exceeded the 10-year coverage window by a few months. Addressing this would require extensive frame and fuel system repairs or replacement.

Your 1999 Kia Sportage may have a rusting frame and a leaking gas tank, which the owner reports as a safety concern. According to this complaint, Kia has not issued a recall or repair program for this issue despite similar problems affecting other vehicles. A fuel tank leak or structural rust could potentially affect your vehicle's safety and reliability.

Suspension,power Train,structure →1 issue
Your rear frame has rusted through, causing the entire rear end to shift significantly even at moderate speeds like 30 mph. This is severe enough that you've had to stop driving the vehicle. The rest of the frame appears to be in acceptable condition. Fixing this will likely require welding or replacing the damaged rear frame section.

Structure,equipment →1 issue
Your Sportage has developed a serious structural problem: the rear frame has cracked and separated, causing the car to sway side-to-side and making steering extremely difficult. Your mechanic says the car is unsafe to drive because the frame is moving excessively. Additionally, you've experienced repeated rust issues with the gas tank (requiring 3 patches and one full replacement) and recurring brake problems. Fixing the frame crack will likely require welding or frame replacement, which is a major structural repair.

Power Train,electrical System,engine,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your 1999 Kia Sportage is emitting strong fuel odors inside and outside the vehicle, which suggests a fuel leak that hasn't been repaired despite dealer visits. You're also experiencing transmission problems where gears slip randomly and shift slowly, and you've had to replace the timing belt three times, the drivetrain once, and the crankshaft once. The dealer has been unable to fix the transmission issue even after multiple visits and seal replacements. Addressing this will likely require a thorough fuel system inspection to locate and repair the leak, and transmission repair or replacement to resolve the shifting problems.

Engine →1 issue
Your engine stalled without warning while you were driving at 15 mph. The dealer didn't inspect or repair the vehicle when you brought it in. At the time, your Sportage had 168,390 miles on it. The issue likely involves the fuel delivery or ignition system, and may require diagnostic testing to identify the specific cause.

Seat Belts →1 issue
Your front left seat belt won't retract back into its housing after you unbuckle it. The belt may stay pulled out or move slowly when you try to put it away. This is a safety concern since a properly functioning seat belt is critical for crash protection. The seat belt retractor mechanism will likely need to be inspected and possibly replaced.
