NHTSA Campaign: 05V329000

Component: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:CABLES

ON CERTAIN MINI VANS, FREEZING CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE WATER ON THE THROTTLE CABLE TO FREEZE DURING NORMAL OPERATION. RESISTANCE TO MOVEMENT OF THE THROTTLE CABLE CAN OCCUR WHEN THE DRIVER LIFTS THEIR FOOT OFF OF THE GAS PEDAL.

Risk: THIS CAN CAUSE THE CABLE TO STICK, THUS PREVENTING THE ENGINE FROM RETURNING TO IDLE AND CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO MAINTAIN SPEED OR ACCELERATE. SUCH AN EVENT CAN OCCUR WITHOUT WARNING AND COULD CAUSE A CRASH.

Fix: DEALERS WILL MODIFY A PROTECTIVE SLEEVE AROUND THE THROTTLE CABLE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 15, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA AT 1-800-333-4542.

While driving at 45-50 mph, you noticed smoke coming from under the hood around both headlights. After pulling into a parking area, the smoke increased and the engine caught fire. You and a friend extinguished the fire using water from a puddle, and it reignited twice over the next half hour before finally stopping. The cause of the fire appears to be related to components in the front of the engine bay near the headlight area.

Your 2004 Kia Sedona caught fire in your driveway without warning while parked, shortly after a routine 30-minute drive with no signs of trouble. You heard two loud booms from inside your house and discovered flames coming from the engine compartment, which then spread to a nearby vehicle. The fire appears to have originated in the engine compartment and both vehicles were destroyed. The investigation will likely focus on the engine bay components, electrical wiring, and fuel system to identify what caused the spontaneous ignition.

Your engine shuts off unexpectedly after starting, with RPMs dropping suddenly. Normally revving the engine briefly fixes it, but this time the problem persisted longer and the engine cut out again while you were driving in the middle of the road. You noticed this typically happens when your gas tank is below half full, and filling up at a gas station resolved the issue.

Filed: May 2017

Your car won't start for 20 minutes to an hour after the engine warms up, and when it finally does start, there's a strong gasoline smell. Multiple mechanics have diagnosed different potential causes—some suspect a faulty crankshaft position sensor (common on Kias), while others think it could be a fuel system issue. Your car also overheats quickly in traffic and loses about 1.5 liters of coolant daily, requiring constant top-offs. Fixing these issues may involve replacing the crankshaft position sensor, timing belt, water pump, or fuel system components, but mechanics haven't been able to permanently resolve the problem since you purchased the vehicle in 2012.

Filed: Apr 2015

Your van's cooling system is failing repeatedly despite repairs. The cooling fan isn't turning on, the radiator isn't circulating coolant properly, and the engine shuts down due to overheating — this happened both before and after a shop replaced the water pump, radiator, fan belt, and thermostat. The cooling system may need diagnostic work to find the underlying cause of the repeated failures.

Filed: Sep 2014

Your speedometer needle jumps around and sometimes gets stuck while you're driving at normal speeds like 40 mph. At the same time, your vehicle accelerates on its own without you pressing the gas pedal. To avoid these problems, you've had to drive slower than normal. This issue started around 96,000 miles and hasn't been diagnosed or repaired.
