NHTSA Campaign: 05V329000

Component: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:CABLES

ON CERTAIN MINI VANS, FREEZING CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE WATER ON THE THROTTLE CABLE TO FREEZE DURING NORMAL OPERATION. RESISTANCE TO MOVEMENT OF THE THROTTLE CABLE CAN OCCUR WHEN THE DRIVER LIFTS THEIR FOOT OFF OF THE GAS PEDAL.

Risk: THIS CAN CAUSE THE CABLE TO STICK, THUS PREVENTING THE ENGINE FROM RETURNING TO IDLE AND CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO MAINTAIN SPEED OR ACCELERATE. SUCH AN EVENT CAN OCCUR WITHOUT WARNING AND COULD CAUSE A CRASH.

Fix: DEALERS WILL MODIFY A PROTECTIVE SLEEVE AROUND THE THROTTLE CABLE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 15, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA AT 1-800-333-4542.

ON CERTAIN MINI VANS EQUIPPED WITH ALLOY WHEELS, MOISTURE CAN ACCUMULATE AROUND THE REAR HUB CAPS CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE OUTER WHEEL BEARING.

Risk: WHEEL BEARING FAILURE MAY OCCUR WITHOUT WARNING WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE REAR HUB CAPS FREE OF CHARGE. UPON INSPECTION, SOME VEHICLES WILL ALSO REQUIRE REPLACEMENT OF THE REAR OUTER BEARINGS AND/OR HUB ASSEMBLY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 13, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA AT 1-800-333-4542.

While driving, your brakes felt increasingly soft and spongy when you pressed the pedal. You discovered that one of the studs holding the master brake cylinder to the brake booster was broken, and the other stud had a loose nut. Fixing this will involve tightening or replacing the studs and nuts that secure the master cylinder to the booster.

Your van is leaking fuel from the fuel rail, which is dripping onto the engine while it's running—this is a serious safety hazard and makes the car unsafe to drive. This started after your van stalled and had trouble restarting, and now you notice a strong gas smell. The fuel leak needs to be repaired immediately to prevent fire risk and ensure the engine runs properly.

Your Kia Sedona won't start reliably—it cranks fine sometimes, but other times the engine won't turn over even though your dash lights and radio work normally. This appears to be caused by the factory immobilizer control module incorrectly thinking your vehicle is being stolen and blocking the engine from starting. The problem is frustrating because no warning light comes on to help mechanics diagnose it, and the car often starts fine when taken to a repair shop, making the issue hard to confirm and fix. The immobilizer module may need to be replaced or reprogrammed to resolve this starting problem.

FireFiled: May 2019

Your vehicle caught fire under the hood and inside the cabin while parked at your home, causing total damage. The fire department extinguished it, but the exact cause was never determined. This type of fire is a serious safety hazard that typically requires investigation of the electrical system, fuel system, and engine components to prevent recurrence.

Filed: Jun 2017

Your engine stalled unexpectedly while driving at low speeds. The dealer found that your car had a non-original aftermarket crankshaft position sensor installed instead of a genuine Kia part, and this defective sensor caused the stall. Because the part wasn't made by Kia, the manufacturer wouldn't help with the issue. Replacing the crankshaft position sensor with either an OEM Kia part or a quality replacement sensor should resolve the stalling problem.

Filed: Aug 2018

While driving 70 mph on Route 55 with your young daughter, the tread separated from your Firestone Wilderness HT tire, causing your car to fishtail across both lanes before you regained control and pulled to the shoulder. This sudden tire failure created a dangerous situation on the highway. The tire will need to be replaced, and you should have the wheel inspected for any damage.

FireFiled: Oct 2019

Your 2005 Kia Sedona caught fire in the dashboard area in front of the steering wheel while parked in a garage. The fire department determined the fire started in the dash, and the vehicle was a total loss with only 115,000 miles on it. This is a serious electrical fire hazard that could have endangered your family and home if it had occurred while you were asleep. Investigation and repair would likely require a complete electrical system inspection and replacement of damaged wiring and components in the dashboard area.

Filed: Oct 2017

Your engine stalls without warning at any speed and in any weather conditions, whether the engine is hot or cold. It restarts immediately after stalling, but this unpredictable behavior is dangerous while driving. The issue likely involves a fuel delivery or ignition system component that's cutting out intermittently.

Crash / FireFiled: Dec 2016

While driving at 35 mph, your vehicle suddenly shut off completely, causing you to lose both brake and power steering function. You ran off the road into a ditch, and the vehicle then caught fire and exploded. The fire department responded and extinguished the fire, but the vehicle was destroyed. The exact cause of the fire could not be determined. A repair would require a complete electrical and engine system diagnostic to identify what caused the sudden shutdown and fire.

CrashFiled: Dec 2016

Your 2005 Kia Sedona rolled backward while parked and collided with another vehicle, but the airbags did not deploy during the crash. No injuries occurred and the vehicle was drivable after the incident. The airbag system may need diagnostic testing to determine why it failed to activate during the collision.

Filed: Aug 2021

Your parked Kia Sedona was overheating, but no warning lights appeared on the dashboard. When you tried to open the hood to investigate, it wouldn't open. The dealer checked and said your vehicle wasn't under recall, but the problem wasn't diagnosed or fixed. The overheating issue may require inspection of your cooling system components to identify the underlying cause.

Power Train1 issue
highPOWER TRAIN
Filed: Nov 2018

While driving at highway speeds (55 mph), your van suddenly makes a loud bang, jerks forward, and the engine RPMs jump above 4000 as if the transmission dropped into second gear. The check engine light points to an intake manifold or transmission sensor problem. You've replaced this sensor three times—twice with aftermarket parts and once with a genuine Kia part—but the issue returns after about 20 miles of driving, even though it temporarily works after restarting. The underlying problem may be a faulty sensor, a wiring issue, or a transmission control module malfunction that requires professional diagnosis to identify the root cause.

Filed: Mar 2017

You heard a noise coming from near your brake system that gradually got worse. Your dealer found that the wheel bearings and hubs on the front driver's side had cracked and were barely holding together with just two bolts. These parts needed to be replaced, and the dealer planned to check the other three wheels for similar damage. Kia was notified but didn't offer a solution. The repair will involve replacing the damaged wheel bearings and hubs, and possibly inspecting or replacing them on the other wheels if needed.

Your tires have developed large bulges in the tread area even though they still have more than half their tread remaining. This is a structural defect in the tire that makes it unsafe to drive on. The tires will need to be replaced to prevent a blowout.
