2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Engine Problems

While driving at highway speed, the vehicle suddenly lost power, displayed a low oil pressure warning, and became inoperable. The vehicle had to be towed. Dealer initially claimed “overfilled oil,” but an independent oil analysis (Blackstone Labs) confirmed excessive fuel dilution (5.5%), indicating contamination of the oil system.

Lifters are ticking. Yet another 3.6L Pentastar engine with the same issue, and no recall issued. Someone is going to die from this defect, if there haven't already been fatalities related to this problem.

Cylinder 2 misfire

I have been trying to get this recall fixed for over two years not. I have received over four notices from FCA via US Mail. Each time I go to the dealer, Planet Jeep, in Flagstaff, AZ I am told that there are no parts available and they cannot do anything.

One of the recalls for this vehicle, 22V-406 has been open for 17 months with no fix available from the manufacturer. This is an unacceptable time to wait for a fix to a problem that could result in a vehicle crash. The NHTSA needs to hold the manufacturer accountable for this unacceptable risk to public safety.

The oil cooler located on top of the engine intake failed and began leaking oil. The part of the oil cooler that failed was made out of plastic. The top of the engine gets very hot which likely caused the plastic to become brittle and fail.

The driver's side cylinder head failed and engine oil began leaking down the engine and onto the exhaust pipes. The cylinder head was kept by the dealership and is not available for inspection. My safety was put at risk of a vehicle fire from the fresh oil leaking onto the exhaust manifold and piping.

Valve lifter failure at 93,000 miles. $2,700 repair. Is apparently a very common problem with the 3.6l Pentastar engine.

3.6L Pentastar engine is defective. In October 2020 (55,000 miles), there was a ticking noise coming from engine and reduced engine power. Fields Jeep Dodge Ram Chrysler replaced right intake camshaft and 6 lifters, rockers, and related gaskets.

The oil cooler is leaking and shooting oil around the engine compartment making a lot of smoke. Not sure if there was fire or not. I went to the 2 repair shops and both said that they are inundated with the same problem from jeep owners and the parts are very expensive and hard to get.

On April 24, 2023, while driving 53 MPH down a busy highway the car just lost all power. I wasn’t able to control the vehicle then I stepped on the brakes but only if the back brakes worked. Which caused the vehicle to spin out of control until I eventually flipped the vehicle upside down into a ditch.

The oil cooler fails resulting in the entire cooling system being filled with the oil from the engine and possibly contaminating the engine oil with coolant. Even after the oil cooler is replaced the entire cooling system must be thoroughly flushed and have multiple parts replaced. It is a safety hazard because there is no warning, the oil cooler fails and all you engine oil is gone.

The oil cooler/ oil filter housing cracked. My 2015 Jeep only has 49,000 miles on it. This is a huge safety problem.

I WAS TRAVELING AT A 60MPH SPEED ON A HIGHWAY WHEN I NOTICED THAT MY OIL TEMP LIGHT CAME ON AND READ 285 DEGREES IN MY OPTIONS LIST YET THE STATIONARY OIL TEMP READ IN THE MIDDLE. SINCE I WAS OUT OF STATE TRAVELING AND IT WAS LATE IN THE EVENING, I NEEDED TO FIND A PLACE TO STAY IF MY JEEP WOULD START (IT DID). I FOUND A HOTEL 3 MILES AWAY FROM MY LOCATION. THE ENGINE HAD COOLED, I HAD OPENED THE HOOD AND SAW NO DAMAGE. I DROVE 35MPH FOR THE 3 MILES AS I WATCHED THE OIL TEMP CLIMB. I MADE IT TO THE HOTEL, WAS PARKING WHEN THE CABIN FILLED WITH SMOKE. I OPENED THE WINDOWS, SHUT OFF THE JEEP AND GOT OUT. I DID SEE FLAMES COME OUT OF THE HOOD AND SOMETHING ON FIRE FELL FROM UNDER THE ENGINE AREA. I CALLED 911. SOMETHING IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT ACTUALLY PUT THE FIRE OUT BEFORE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED. THEY STILL PROCEEDED TO DOUSE THE ENGINE AND DISCONNECT THE BATTERY. I THEN FOUND OUT THERE WAS A RECALL (W79) ON THE 2015 ECODIESEL JEEP GRAND CHEROKEES FOR THE (ERG) EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION COOLERS THAT ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TO THERMAL FATIGUE. THIS CAN CAUSE THE COOLER TO CRACK, ALLOW PREHEATED, VAPORIZED COOLANT TO INTERACT WITH OTHER HYDROCARBONS AND AIR IN THE SYSTEM THAT MAY LEAD TO A VEHICLE FIRE. THIS RECALL WAS NOT SCHEDULED TO OFFICIALLY BE RELEASED UNTIL DECEMBER 31, 2020. 20 DAYS AFTER MY JEEP FIRE.

05/2023 loud ticking noise coming from top right side of engine. Replaced transfer case module. Ticking sound continued.

The vehicle has a significant safety recall out with no timely identified repair offered.

We have been unable to drive the vehicle for 9 months out of 12 due to it being in the shop. The latest was a OBDC of "Improper DEF used see dealership". It was at 3 different shops to remedy the issue the final one being Lithia Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge of Missoula #134.

Vehicle only has 38,000 miles and suddenly had visible oil leaking from underneath. No warning lights came on but I took to service center for inspection. The oil filter housing was found to be defective and "leaking badly".

The oil filter housing in the Jeep Gladiator, Wrangler, and Grand Cherokee is known to have serious problems and safety concerns. The Pentastar oil filter housing used in these vehicles can crack and warp due to heat exposure and this can lead to serious oil leaks.

Noticed a wet substance under the hood and a smell of oil/antifreeze (couldn’t determine either or) coming from vents prior to purchase. I was told it would be looked at and taken care of. After purchase I noticed a heavy leak under the vehicle and when I touched it, I again smelled the same oil/antifreeze.

I HAVE A DIESEL ENGINE WHICH HAS A VERY OBVIOUS LAG IN GETTING POWER TO THE TRANSMISSION. MILLER CASA CHRYSLER JEEP (9733 COORS BLVD NW, ALBUQUERQUE, NM 87114; (505) 633-2050) WAS CONTACTED AND IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE PART WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE NEARLY STALLED WHILE DRIVING AT RANDOM SPEEDS. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 83,000. VIN TOOL CONFIRMS PARTS NOT AVAILABLE.

I GOT A SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THEY SAID IT WAS PURGE VALVE ON THE EVAPORATOR SYSTEM. I ENCOUNTER THE SAME PROBLEM ON MY 2014 DODGE DURANGO AT THE SAME MILEAGE. I THINK CHRYSLER HAS A SYSTEMIC PROBLEM WITH THIS PART OF THEIR EMISSION SYSTEM.

UPON ENTERING THE CITY STREET A LOUD BANG WAS HEARD FROM THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE AND CAR STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. POWER WAS IN THE VEHICLE BUT ABILITY TO SHIFT IN GEAR WAS GONE. AFTER TURNING OFF AND BACK ON I WAS ABLE TO PUT THE JEEP IN DRIVE IN ORDER TO CLEAR THE ROAD AS TO AVOID A TRAFFIC BUILD UP. IT SEEMS THE TRANSMISSION IS GONE BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WILL NOT CHANGE INTO GEAR NOR REVERSE. A WRECKER COMPANY WAS CONTACTED TO BRING JEEP TO DEALER.

MY 6.4 HEMI HAD A LIFTER FAILURE. IT HAS BEEN VERY WELL MAINTAIN OIL CHANGES EVERY 3/5700 MILES. 1000 MILES AGO HAD THE OIL CHANGE. AS IT GOT WARMER THE ENGINE HAD A 'TICK' NOISE. TOOK IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP TO FIND OUT A VERY COMMON LIFTER ISSUE HAS HAPPEN. I AM SHY 3 MONTHS POST WARRANTY. TEAM SRT CLAIMED IT CAN BE NORMAL MAINTENANCE FOR THE LIFTERS TO FAIL AND WIPE OUT THE CAM. THEY WILL NOT COVER IT. GOOGLE SEARCH HEMI LIFTER ISSUE. YOU'LL SEE TONS OF CASES.

SINCE THE RECALL A YEAR AGO (SPRING 2019) THE VEHICLE HAS A SERIOUS HESITATION IN THE THROTTLE RESPONSE UNTIL THE ECODIESEL ENGINE REACHES FULL OPERATING TEMPERATURE. THIS CREATES A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD. THE FUEL MILEAGE HAS DROPPED A MINIMUM OF 4 MPG. I RECEIVED A SECOND NOTICE (12/10) REGARDING AN "APPROVED EMISSIONS MODIFICATION DISCLOSURE 3.0L DIESEL" THE LOCAL DEALER WAS UNAWARE AND STATED IT WAS THE PREVIOUS RECALL. I CALLED "FCA" (JEEP) AND WAS INFORMED THAT THIS WAS THE PRECURSER TO ANOTHER RECALL. THE ONLY IDENTIFYING NUMBERS I HAVE ARE "FC106038" AND "****AUTO**ALL FOR AADC 030 7/1/2" MARKED ON THE NOTICE. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT NEEDS A FIX OF SOME SORT. THE CURE FOR THE ORIGINAL RECALL SEEMS TO BE WORSE THAN THE ORIGINAL PROBLEM. THE ORIGINAL RECALL REPAIR WAS PERFORMED 9/17/19.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FUEL ECONOMY WAS GREATLY REDUCED AFTER THE REPAIR WAS PERFORMED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE VEHICLE STALLED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO MOVE FROM A STOPPED POSITION. ADDITIONALLY, THE THROTTLE VALVE CONTROL, REGENERATION, AND EXHAUST FILTER FULL MESSAGES DISPLAYED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE EXHAUST FILTER WAS REPLACED HOWEVER, THE FAILURES RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 92,000.

Heard ticking coming from engine shortly after routine oil change. Brought the car in, and was told I had to have intake & exhaust camshaft & lifters replaced. Had repaired, a week later check engine light came on.

The vehicle engine had a clicking/ticking noise for well over a year. We brought this issue up with the service dept and were told it was nothing to worry about. While driving home 1 night on the highway the vehicle started to hesitate/stutter and we had a problem accelerating while driving.

Continual engine problem light due to egr sensor fouled. Have had it serviced numerous times. Causes acceleration issues and shifting issues.

Engine coolant leak. Had to replace the turbo water feed tube located under the intake manifold. The tube has approximate 3" rubber line which is exposed to high temperatures and over time fails, requiring replacement.

My 2015 jeep grand cherokee has 85,820 miles & the radiator was found leaking when brought in for a engine code indicating the thermostat was bad. The thermostat was replaced ($130.00 part) and then the chrysler dealer told me the radiator needed to be replaced. My dealer mentioned this has been more common with jeeps and they now keep the radiator in stock.

I took the vehicle to towbin dodge in north las vegas for a check engine light. Are used an extended warranty service to get the car looked at and repaired. The maintenance representative advised me that there was an open recall for the omissions on the diesel engine.

My check engine light came on. I brought it to my jeep dealer.they found code p0302 and said the left engine head had to be replaced as well as #2 fuel injector.I had just over 50000 mi. The head was covered under warranty,the fuel injector cost me 415$.

Emission check engine light for small evaporation emission system leak p0456 fault code. Also, fuel tank wont fill with fuel at higher nozzle flow rates... Possibly due to tank check valve.

When the air conditioning is running there is a noise coming from the air compressor and I don't understand y the car being so new it can have already broke I went to get it checked and they said it would cost $1690 to fix at a jeep dealer that is extremely ridiculous I would say ...

I received the safety recall for the electronic shift lever not going to park. I scheduled an appointment with bob baker jeep in carlsbad, ca to have the recall done. I went to drop it off.

We bought our grand cherokee at falls motor city and they offered us a free first oil change. At 7000 miles we took it in had the oil change. Dealer never reset oil light drove it home next day engine light is on.

While driving, engine immediately shuts off. Dash, radio, lights, etc. all function as normal.

The engine kicks like the injectors are blocked or something. It happens in idle and all speeds, including highway speeds. It is not speed related.

FCA has had an open recall (Z46/NHTSA 22V-406) for over 14 months. They are unable to provide necessary parts and as such potentially unsafe vehicles must be driven by owner and these vehicles are unable to be traded/sold due to open safety recall. FCS Recall Assistance and Chrysler Group Customer Care for Jeep have been contacted with no resolution and no anticipated date for resolution.

While driving down the road my car will shift into Neutral while going at at full speed driving down the freeway, and loses all power. I have to pull over on the side of the road turn the car off and restart. This has happened 6 times and is very dangerous.

Ecodiesel turbo lag can be hazardous, 2-3 second delay. I will not let anyone else drive it due to concerns of getting hit or hitting someone.

Ever since the fca ecodiesel exhaust emissions update, my vehicle has had terrible turbo-lag. When you step on the accelerator, especially after a cold start it can take up to 4 seconds to actually move forward. I already reported this once before, but this vehicle is a serious hazard.

I had my jeep for less than a year and one day, for no reason, it just shut off. I took it to jeep and they said the wrong oil was used in the previous oil change. So they put oil in the truck.

We purchased our car in october 2015 and recently our engine light came on . We took the truck to barbera's to find out the problem and was told we need a new thermostat and we just can't imagine how or why we would need that with the car being new with only 18k miles on it.. When driving my vehicle long distances on the highway then entering the city the transmission will shift hard between third and second gear. It will stay that way for a day and then after sitting for over 12 hours it will slowly start to go away. Jeep did on flash updates and was on able to resolve the problem.

I noticed the problem has become more pronounced starting september 5, 2015. While slowing down to stop the vehicle it lunged forward almost causing me to rear end the vehicle in front. I also noticed delays in accelerating from a stop position.
