ENGINE STALLS/CUTS OUT WITHOUT WARNING WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, ON CITY STREETS AND SOMETIMES WHILE STOPPED IN TRAFFIC. THIS IS AN ONGOING ISSUE FOR ALMOST A YEAR. MECHANIC CANNOT FIND OR DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. ONLINE FORUMS SEEM TO INDICATE THIS IS AN INHERENT PROBLEM IN THIS PRODUCT LINE THE INCIDENT DATE BELOW IS THE LATEST OCCURENCE.

AFTER MULTIPLE TIMES, THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED INTO THE CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP ON JUNE 7TH WITH CONCERNS THAT THE VEHICLE WAS STALLING AND ENGINE TURNING OFF. UPON THE INSPECTION OF THE VEHICLE ON JUNE 11TH YOUR SERVICE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD NEED ITS BRAKES & ROTORS REPLACED IN ADDITION TO THE VEHICLE NEEDING A NEW ENGINE COIL TO REPAIR THE CONSTANT PROBLEM OF THE VEHICLE CUTTING OFF. PAID FOR THE IGNITION COIL REPAIR, VEHICLE STILL TURNED OFF. PAID FOR NEW FUEL PUMP VEHICLE STILL TURNED OFF. NOT DEALERSHIP IS PROCLAIMING PCM BOARD NEEDS O BE REPLACED. I HOPE THAT JEEP CONSIDERS THE DANGER THAT MY CHILD WAS PLACE BECAUSE OF ENGINE FAILURE FOR MY 97 CHEROKEE. *TR

I JUST FOUND OUT I HAVE A CRACKED MANIFOLD, MY DRIVER SIDE DOOR HAS BROKEN PUT A NEW PART IN IT AND NOW THAT IS BROKEN,I HAVE ALSO HAD TO PUT A NEW TRANSMISSION IN IT WITH ONLY 148,000.00 MILES. IN 2006 I HAD TO FIX THE GAS TANK BECAUSE IT WAS BROKEN TOO. IS THIS NOT A RECALL PROBLEM????? ANY OF THESE, I HAVE HAD THE JEEP SINCE 2000 AND I BOUGHT IT WHEN IT HAD 20,000 MILES ON IT. THE VEHICLE WILL BE SITTING AT IDLE OR GOING AT A VERY SLOW SPEED AND WILL JUST STALL. IT CRANKS BACK UP FINE (MOST OF THE TIME-SOMETIMES, IT TAKES ABOUT 30 SECONDS OF CRANKING IT) THE PROBLEM OCCURS AT DIFFERENT TIMES - MORNING, NIGHT, COLD, HOT, ETC. IT SEEMS TO ACT WORSE THE LONGER THE VEHICLE HAS SAT UNDRIVEN (OVERNIGHT OR DURING A WORK SHIFT). I STALL OUT IN TRAFFIC - RECENTLY AT A LIGHT AND THEN THE LIGHT CHANGED AND I COULD NOT START MY VEHICLE. THIS IS DEFINITELY A RECALL ITEM AS MANY PEOPLE HAVE POSTED THESE COMPLAINTS. THE IS A BIG SAFETY HAZARD. I HAVE SMALL CHILDREN AND WITH THE STALLING ISSUES HAPPENING WHILE DRIVING - IT'S A BIG PROBLEM THAT SOMEONE SHOULD ADDRESS BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT. I HAVE SPENT A WEEK AT THE MECHANIC SHOP REPLACING PART AND SPENDING MONEY ONLY TO NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. THE CONTACT STATED THAT ALL OF THE REPAIRS WERE AT HIS EXPENSE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CALLED AND CLAIM#19770779 AND CASE#2484134 WERE FILED. CAR STALLS WHEN DRIVING WITH NO WARNING. HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAVE NOT FOUND THE PROBLEM. IT CONTINUES TO STALL NO MATTER THE WEATHER OR HOW LONG HAVE DRIVEN THE CAR. IT DOES NOT GIVE YOU A WARNING OF THE STALL. THE CAR STOP WHILE TURNING OR JUST DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY (HIGHWAY) AT ANY SPEED. I HAVE BEEN VERY LUCK AND NOT GOTTEN KILLED. DUE TO THE CAR STALLING ON THE FREEWAY. AND FROM THE INTERNET INFORMATION THERE ARE ALOT OF GRAND CHEROKEES OUT THERE HAVING THE SAME STALLING PROBLEM. MY 98 JGC STARTED STALLING RANDOMLY; ON ACCELERATION, DECELERATION, HIGHWAY, STOPLIGHTS, ETC. IT WOULD ALWAYS START BACK UP AND RUN AGAIN, BUT THE STALLING WOULD HAPPEN AT ANY TIME. NO CODES WOULD REGISTER EITHER. THE DEALER TRIED REPLACING THE IDLE AIR CONTROL MOTOR AND IGNITION COIL ($300), BUT THE PROBLEM CONTINUED. I REPLACED THE IGNITION WIRES, DISTRIBUTOR CAP, SPARK PLUGS, AND THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR BUT STILL THE SAME. . WHEN THIS OCCURS THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WOULD DROP OUT MOMENTARILY. ALSO, WHEN THE ASD DROPS OUT, THERE ARE NO COMPUTER CODES REGISTERED. THEY ALSO CLEANED THE CONTACTS ON ALL THE RELAYS UNDER THE HOOD AND COATING WITH DI-ELECTRIC GREASE. THIS DID NOT HELP EITHER. *TR

YESTERDAY, APRIL 8TH 2009, I DROVE TO CLASS AND THERE WERE NO PROBLEMS OR SIGNS OF THEM. AFTER 1 HOUR, I STARTED THE CAR, WHICH STARTED FINE, AND BEGAN TO DRIVE BACK HOME. AT A STOP LIGHT 2 MINUTES AFTER LEAVING, I PRESS THE GAS, AND THE CAR SEEMED TO STALL, AS IF THE ENGINE WAS GIVING WAY OR STUMBLING. THIS HAPPENED ABOUT 4 TIMES, GETTING VERY CLOSE TO STALLING. THE FOLLOWING DAY, TODAY, APRIL 9TH, AFTER LEAVING THE CAR OFF FOR THE NIGHT,IT STARTED PERFECTLY. 2 MINUTES LATER, AT A STOP LIGHT, IT LOST ALL POWER. IT HAD TROUBLE TURNING OVER THE FIRST TWO ATTEMPTS, BUT THE THIRD TIME IT STARTED PERFECTLY. AFTER THAT, I BEGAN DRIVING AGAIN AND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD WHILE DRIVING, AGAIN THE CAR LOST ALL POWER. I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC AND PUT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL, TRIED TO START IT AGAIN. THE FIRST COUPLE ATTEMPTS THE ENGINE DIDN'T TURN OVER, BUT AGAIN, WHEN IT DID START, IT STARTED PERFECTLY. THIS HAPPENED A COUPLE MORE TIMES. AFTER LEAVING AGAIN, IT WAS ABOUT 20 MINUTES AFTER IGNITION THAT WHEN ON A MAIN ROAD, IT DID NOT STALL COMPLETELY, BUT WAS LIKE IT WAS STARTING/TRYING TO. IT STUMBLED AND JERKED ROUGHLY. AFTER THAT, IT DROVE ROUGH, BEFORE I RETURNED HOME AND TURNED IT OFF. I AM AFRAID THAT IF I AM ON A HIGHWAY OR MAIN ROAD, THIS WILL HAPPEN AGAIN AT A HIGHER SPEED, CAUSING AN ACCIDENT/HARM TO ME/DRIVERS AROUND ME. I HAVE SEARCHED EVERYWHERE FOR ANY INFORMATION ON HOW TO FIX THIS, AND MANY OTHER JEEP OWNER HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, AND HAVE SPENT THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS AND BEEN TOLD BY NUMEROUS MECHANICS THEY CAN NOT FIND THE PROBLEM. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS FOR THE IDENTICAL FAILURES, BUT THERE WERE NO RESOLUTIONS. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 170,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 183,000.

I OWN A 1998 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LIMITED 5.9 LITER ENGINE. I DRIVE THE CAR 5000 MILES/YEAR AND THE CAR HAS 39000 TOTAL MILES. THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER FAILED AND BEGAN TO RATTLE. THE LOCAL JEEP DEALERSHIP REFUSED TO ADMIT IT WAS THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER , AND SAID IT WAS THE MUFFLER. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO 4 DIFFERENT EXHAUST SHOPS, AND ALL 4 IMMEDIATELY SAID IT WAS DEFINITELY THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. I FINALLY GOT THE JEEP DEALERSHIP TO REPLACE IT AND THEY TOO FINALLY ADMITTED IT WAS INDEED THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. WHILE I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH THIS ISSUE I DID MUCH RESEARCH ON THIS CARS CATALYTIC CONVERTER. I FOUND MANY WEBSITES WITH OWNERS OF MY SAME CAR AND OTHER SIMILAR CHRYSLER CARS THAT USE THE SAME CATALYTIC CONVERTER. EVERY OWNER THAT WROTE COMPLAINTS DESCRIBED EXACTLY WHAT MY PROBLEM HAS BEEN. THEY ALL SAID THAT THEIR CATALYTIC CONVERTER HAS BROKEN FROM BETWEEN 8000 MILES, THE AVERAGE SEEMED TO BE 44000 MILES, AND HAD TO BE REPLACED ON AVERAGE 3 TIMES BEFORE 100000 MILES. THE MOST RECENT INCIDENT IS WITH THE ENGINE AND ALL ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SHUTS OFF AT FREEWAY SPEED WITH NO WARNING. THE EXPLAINATION GIVEN WAS A WEAK BATTERY AND LOOSE BATTERY CABLE. ALL OTHER INCIDENTS ARE DUE TO SUB-STANDARD JEEP OEM PARTS. HE TOLD ME THAT MY VEHICLE MAY HAVE A FAULTY GAS GUAGE AS HE HAS PICKED UP OTHER DRIVERS OF JEEP GRAND CHEROKEES THAT HAVE HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN TO THEM. HE SAID HE THOUGHT THAT CERTAIN YEARS OF THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN RECALLED. HE TURNED OUT TO BE RIGHT. ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS REFUELED, I HAD NO PROBLEMS STARTING UP AND DRIVING HOME. THE NEXT WEEK I TOOK THE JEEP INTO PAMBY MOTORS IN RIDGEFIELD CT AND THEY REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY THE DEFECTIVE PART. I WAS FORTUNATE THAT THE INCIDENT OCCURRED WHEN I WAS ALONE AND NOT WITH MY FAMILY OR AT A TIME WHEN THE TRAFFIC VOLUME WOULD HAVE MADE IT MORE DIFFICULT TO AVOID TRAFFIC. I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR BACK FROM CHRYSLER AND THE NHTSA ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, WHETHER IT IS WIDESPREAD AND WHAT CHRYSLER INTENDS TO DO ABOUT IT. *AK

TRANSMITTER FAILED CAUSING SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT SOON LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE.
I AM A FRIEND WHO WILL DESCRIBE THE PROBLEMS THAT CELENA HAS ENCOUNTERED WITH HER GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO. THE FIRST, SHE NOTICED A SPRAYING OF OILY FLUID NEAR THE TOP OF THE RADIATOR MORE TOWARDS THE AREA NEAR THE BATTERY. AT THAT POINT, SHE NOTICED THAT THE INTERIOR PORTION OF THE HOOD HAD SOME DARK OILY SPOT. I HAS SUSPICION THAT IT HAD ORIGINATED FROM A LEAKING 3/8 -1/2" FITTING ATTACHED TO THE SIDE OF THE RADIATOR AND LEADING TOWARDS THE BOTTOM OF THE TRANSMISSION. SHE BROUGHT IT IN THE DEALERSHIP FOR AN INSPECTION. MASTER MECHANIC INSPECTED THE SUSPECTED AREA. DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE TRANSMISSION FLUID LINE CONNECTS TO THE RADIATOR TO ALLOW THE OIL TO COOL OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. ANYWAYS, THEY WENT AHEAD AND PLACED TEFLON TAPE AT THE AREA. PROBLEM #2, I NOTICE SOME OIL ON THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE FLOOR MAT. THE LOCATION OF THE SPILL HAD OCCURRED UNDERNEATH, TO THE LEFT, OF THE STEERING WHEEL COLUMN OR UNDERNEATH WHERE THEY WOULD PLACE THE CONNECTOR TO PERFORM THE COMPUTER DIAGNOSTIC . THE AREA WOULD BE WHERE THE LEFT FOOT WOULD NORMAL REST ON THE MAT. THE AREA OF THE SPILL WAS ABOUT 8" IN LENGTH AND 3" IN WIDTH. THE VISCOSITY WOULD BE OF A DIRTY BRAKE FLUID OIL, HYDRAULIC, OR POWER STEERING FLUID. THE AMOUNT WOULD BE ABOUT 1 - 1 1/2 TABLESPOON FULL. I AM CONCERNED THAT IT COULD BE DAMAGING SOMETHING IF THE OIL VACATED A RESERVOIR/FLUID LINE OR THE RISK THAT THE BRAKES CAN FAIL IF IT IS BRAKE FLUID. PROBLEM #3 - RIGHT REAR PASSENGER WINDOW INTERMITTENTLY DOES NOT MOVE UP OR DOWN WHEN IT IS OPENED OR CLOSED. THXS IN ADVANCE...PLEASE HELP.

WHENEVER DRIVING VEHICLE AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, WITHOUT ANY WARNING, THE ENGINE WOULD STALL OUT. THE ENGINE CHECK LIGHT WOULD COME ON. WAS RUNNING ROUGH. ITS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER AT LEAST 4-5 DIFFERENT TIMES, BUT PROBLEM NOT SOLVED. *AK
THE ENGINE CYLINDER PISTON RINGS BROKE. ENGINE WAS MAKING NOISES. HAD ENGINE TAKEN APART & THE PISTON WAS FOUND TO BE BROKEN. MANUFACTURER INFORMED NOT A DEFECT IN ENGINE. *AK
REAR AXLE BEARING FAILED; FRONT AXLE IS NOW PRODUCING SAME VIBRATION AND NOISE SIMILAR TO REAR COMPONENT; DIP STICK INSTALLATION WRONG; AND ENGINE HESITATION AND SLUGGISH ACCELERATION WHEN COLD.
ENGINE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED WITH THROTTLE NOT BEING PRESSED
WHEN TRAVELING AT ANY SPEED THE VEHICLE CUTS OFF WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING, CAUSING LOSS OF POWER STEERING, ETC. ALSO WHEN THE PROBLEM OCCURS, THE RADIO IS STILL ON. CONSUMER HAS CONTACTED THE DEALER, DEALER HAS REPLACED THE ENTIRE COMPUTER SYSTEM, BUT PROBLEM STILL EXISTS. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER DETAILS. *AK
BELT PULLEY DISINTEGRATED AFTER 2600 MILES ON NEW VEHICLE. FRAGMENT OF PULLEY WAS EJECTED AT SUFFICIENT VELOCITY TO PUNCTURE HOOD LEAVING APPROX. 1/2 INCH HOLE. AT APPROX. 65 MPH THE ENGINE RPM WAS ONLY APPROX. 2500. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THIS FAILURE COULD OCCUR IN A STANDING VEHICLE, CAUSING A HAZARD TO OTHERS.
CONDENSATION WEEP HOLE IN MUFFLER HAS AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF EXHAUST GAS ESCAPING, ALONG WITH SIGNIFICANT NOISE.
