U.S. DRIVE RIGHT IS RECALLING 107 MY 1994-1998 RIGHT HAND DRIVE, 4-WHEEL DRIVE JEEP CHEROKEE VEHICLES. THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 101, 'CONTROLS AND DISPLAYS;' NO. 108, 'LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT;' NO. 111, 'REARVIEW MIRROR;' NO. 114, 'THEFT PROTECTION;' NO. 115, 'VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER;' NO. 118, 'POWER WINDOW SYSTEM;' NO. 120, 'TIRE SELECTION AND RIMS FOR MOTOR VEHICLES OTHER THAN PASSENGER CARS;' NO. 208, 'OCCUPANT CRASH PROTECTION;' AND NO. 301, 'FUEL SYSTEM INTEGRITY.'

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
CERTAIN AFTERMARKET AIRTEX ELECTRIC FUEL PUMPS INSTALLED FOR USE AS REPLACEMENT EQUIPMENT FOR CERTAIN 1997-2004 JEEP WRANGLER; 1997-2001 JEEP CHEROKEE; 1997-2004 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE; AND 2000-2003 DODGE DAKOTA VEHICLES. THE PLASTIC ELECTRICAL GROMMET CONNECTORS AT THE TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP MODULE ARE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH AUTOMOTIVE FUELS AND MAY DEGRADE CAUSING A POTENTIAL LEAK PATH FOR FUEL.
Fix: AIRTEX WILL NOTIFY ITS CUSTOMERS AND WILL REPLACE THE AFFECTED FUEL PUMPS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JANUARY 25, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT AIRTEX CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT 1-800-880-3056.

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MULTI-PURPOSE PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE FUEL TANK MOUNTED FUEL LEVEL SENDING UNIT ACCURACY CAN DEGRADE OVER TIME, INDICATING SIGNIFICANTLY MORE FUEL IN RESERVE THAN IS ACTUALLY PRESENT.
Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL LEVEL SENDING UNIT.

TAKATA RECALL WAS SITTING AT A RED LIGHT AND IT JUST SHUT OFF ON ME AND WOULD NOT START BACK UP.
I WENT IN FOR THE RECALL REGARDING THE FUEL TANK ISSUE (IN REAR END COLLISIONS) - ON SEPTEMBER 22 2015. I WAS TOLD THAT IT WOULD TAKE 4-6 WEEKS IN ORDER TO RECEIVE THE MANDATED 100 DOLLAR GIFT CARD. HOWEVER, AS OF NOVEMBER 18TH 2015 I HAVE NOT RECEIVED IT. WHEN I'VE CALLED, I KEEP BEING TOLD THAT THE RESPONSE TO THE GIFT CARD WAS MORE THAN CHRYSLER WAS ANTICIPATING AND THAT IT COULD BE SEVERAL MORE WEEKS BEFORE IT'S EVEN MAILED OUT. FURTHERMORE, NOBODY ON THE RECALL RESOLUTION TEAM HAS ANY INFORMATION ABOUT WHEN THE GIFT CARDS WILL BE MAILED OUT, OR WHEN THEY WILL BE RECEIVED. HOWEVER, THEY KEEP TELLING CUSTOMERS "4-6 WEEKS".

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1997 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH, THERE WAS A FUEL ODOR COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT DISCOVERED FUEL LEAKING FROM THE FUEL TANK. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE FUEL GAUGE INDICATED LOW FUEL LEVELS IMMEDIATELY AFTER REFUELING. IN ADDITION, THE LOW FUEL WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS CAUSING THE CONTACT TO REFUEL THE VEHICLE OFTEN. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY A CERTIFIED MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO THE PLASTIC FUEL LINE. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V252000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE, STRUCTURE). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. IN RESPONSE TO THE LATEST ON THE RECALL OF JEEP GRAND CHEROKEES AND JEEP LIBERTIES, I RESPECTFULLY REQUEST A FULL REVIEW OF THE 1993 - 2001 JEEP CHEROKEES REAR IMPACT SAFETY. IN NHTSA'S INITIAL REQUEST TO CHRYSLER, THIS GROUP OF CHEROKEES WAS INCLUDED AS A SUBJECT VEHICLE, NOTING YOU HAD ONLY RECEIVED 15 VOQ'S AND ONLY (1) WAS FOR A CHEROKEE, ONE IS TOO MANY. NHTSA ALSO STATED THAT "ASSESSMENT OF AVAILABLE DATA FOR THE CHEROKEE DID NOT ESTABLISH AN UNREASONABLE RISK." WAS THE AVAILABLE DATA AT THE TIME ACCEPTABLE? OR HAVE YOU SUBJECTED THE OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES TO A LIFE OF FEAR DRIVING VEHICLE NOT PROPERLY TESTED. WHY WAS THERE NO REAR END IMPACT TESTING OF THE CARS WHEN THEY INITIALLY CAME ON THE MARKET? THE LOCATION OF THE GAS TANK IS IN EXACTLY THE SAME POSITION AS THE GRAND CHEROKEE AND THE GAS TANK IS ALSO "PLASTIC". MY GRANDCHILDREN RIDE IN THE BACK SEAT OF A 1997 CHEROKEE AND IF IT WAS TO GET REAR-ENDED AND CAUGHT ON FIRE, HOW LONG DO YOU THINK IT WOULD TAKE THEIR PARENTS TO GET THEM OUT OF THEIR RESTRAINTS? DID YOU TEST THAT? AS A FAMILY WE DO NOT FEEL SAFE AND THE GOVERNMENT HAS DONE NOTHING TO REASSURE US EITHER. WHY IS IT UP TO THE PUBLIC TO FILE COMPLAINTS? WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE FOR SEVERAL HUNDRED MILES THE GAS TANK STARTED SPRAYING GASOLINE UP THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE AND IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE EXHAUST PIPE HAD MELTED A HOLE IN THE TANK AND CAUSED THE TANK TO LEAK. LUCKILY HUSBAND IS MECHANIC AND KNEW WHAT TO DO TO KEEP VEHICLE FROM CATCHING FIRE. GAS TANK AND EXHAUST WAS REPLACED BY OWNER BEFORE KNOWLEDGE OF FAULTY GAS TANK ISSUES. ALSO LATER I RECEIVED A RECALL TO INSTALL A HITCH AND DEALER SAID THEIR WERE NONE AVAILABLE. WAITED A YEAR FOR HITCH. THINK IT IS UNFAIR THAT BECAUSE I WAS PERSISTENT AND GOT RECALL FIXED THAT MY VEHICLE WILL NOT RECEIVE THE INCENTIVES THAT ARE CURRENTLY BEING OFFERED. I HAVE ALL DOCUMENTATION OF REPLACING GAS TANK IN 2013 AND RECALL.

THE PARTS REQUIRED WERE CURRENTLY NOT AVAILABLE. I BOUGHT A TRAILER HITCH AND HAD IT INSTALLED. I THEN TOOK IT TO JEFF WYLER JEEP IN FORT THOMAS KY. THEY INSPECTED IT AND PASSED IT. (PERFORM RECALL N45) I CALLED YOUR CUSTOMER SERVICE AND ASKED IF I WOULD BE PAID BACK FOR THE PART, THEY SAID NO BECAUSE IT WAS NOT AN (OEM) PART. PLEASE MAKE THIS RIGHT, I HAVE NOW TAKEN OFF THE PART I BOUGHT, AND ASKING YOU TO EITHER PAY ME FOR THE PART, WHICH WAS $316.00 WITH LABOR, OR SET UP A DATE AND TIME TO A DEALER TO PUT THE RIGHT PART ON. VEHICLE EXPERIENCED TOTAL FAILURE AT 65 MPH. I WAS TOLD THIS WAS DUE TO A CORRODING FUEL TANK, CAUSED BY ADDITIVES USED BY GAS MANUFACTURERS. APPARENTLY THE CORRODING TANK "PIECES/SLIVERS/SHARDS/ETC." CLOG THE FUEL FILTER/FUEL PUMP AND DOES NOT ALLOW FUEL TO REACH THE ENGINE. CHRYSLER HAS SINCE CHANGED THE CONSTRUCTION OF THEIR TANK TO ACCOUNT FOR THIS PROBLEM. HOWEVER, I HAD TO WAIT IN EXCESS OF 2 WEEKS FOR A TANK BECAUSE OF A (QUOTE FORM THE DEALER) "NATIONAL BACKORDER" ON FUEL TANKS. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, I HAVE FOUND THIS TO BE A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM (IT'S WHAT'S CAUSING THE BACKORDER, AS BEST AS I CAN DETERMINE). THE WARRANTY COMPANY I HAVE EXTENDED COVERAGE THROUGH (WYNNS), TOLD ME THAT THEY ARE SO FAMILIAR WITH IT THAT THEY HAVE INSTITUTED A PROCEDURE TO DENY ANY CLAIM ARISING TO CHRYSLER TANKS SINCE IT IS A PROBLEM STEMMING FROM THE CHRYSLER DESIGN. MY REAL PROBLEM ARISES FROM THE FACT THAT WHILE THIS ISSUE IS SO FAR REACHING TO CAUSE A NATIONAL BACKORDER ON CHRYSLER TANKS, GETTING CHRYSLER AS A CORPORATION TO ADMIT THE PROBLEM IS IMPOSSIBLE (OF COURSE) ALTHOUGH THE LOCAL JEEP DEALER IS AWARE OF IT. IF IT IS A KNOWN PROBLEM, I AS A CONSUMER SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED SOME NOTICE ABOUT POTENTIALLY CORROSIVE TANKS, OR PERHAPS THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS ITEM. THE FUEL TANK FAILURE CAUSES A COMPLETE STOPPAGE OF THE VEHICLE, AS I LEARNED TRAVELLING 65 MPH ON RTE. 81S IN PENNSYLVANIA WITH MY 7 MONTH PREGNANT WIFE AND 1.5 YEAR OLD SON IN THE CAR. I THANKFULLY WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, BUT IT WAS INOPERABLE THEREAFTER. I HAVE SINCE HAD THE TANK, FUEL PUMP, FUEL FILTER, AND O2 SENSOR REPLACED AT A COST OF $1023. WHILE I WOULD LIKE TO SEE CHRYSLER HALP ME OUT WITH A PORTION OF THIS SINCE IT IS THE TANK DESIGN/CONSTRUCTION THAT CAUSED THE FAILURE, I ULTIMATELY WOULD LIKE TO SEE THEM ALERT THEIR CUSTOMERS ABOUT THE POTENTIAL OF THE VEHICLE SHUTTING DOWN. *AK

THEN ON HIGHWAY AT 70 MPH, ENGINE SHUTS ITSELF OFF, TWICE WITHIN HALF HOUR. DEALER SAYS COMPUTER CHIP AND REPLACES, BUT NOT FIXED. THEN SAYS FUEL PUMP. REPLACES. NOW SIX WEEKS LATER, SAME THING HAPPENING TO CAR. NOT FUEL GAUGE PROBLEM, AS TANK 3/4 FULL. *AK
FUEL SENDING UNIT FAILED WHILE TURNING AT A VERY BUSY INTERSECTION. THIS CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO STALL WHICH POTENTIALLY COULD OF CAUSED A FATALITY. JEEP REPLACED THE UNIT AND WE HAVE NOT HAD A PROBLEM SINCE. THIS VEHICLE ALWAYS LEAKS FUEL WHEN FILLED DESPITE NOT BEING "TOPPED OFF". I WILL AWAKEN IN THE MORNING TO A PUDDLE OF GAS UNDER THE CAR. I FEEL THAT MY GARAGE MAY EXPLODE ONE DAY. THESE ARE TWO VERY SERIOUS PROBLEMS RELATING SAFETY. OVERALL, THIS VEHICLE HAS POOR ATTENTION PAID TO DETAIL. I HAVE HAD MANY MORE PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE COMPARED TO THE ENTIRE LIFE OF MY USED ACURA WITH 120,000 MILES.
