TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1997 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. THE CONTACT WAS IN AN IDLE POSITION WITH THE BRAKE EPRESSED WHEN SUDDENLY, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED ABNORMALLY. THE CONTACT APPLIED FULL BODY FORCE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE RECURRED THREE TIMES. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE MALFUNCTION. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

VEHICLE INCIDENT 09/23/08 APPROX. 2:55-3:00 P.M. ON HIGHWAY 90, MILTON, FL DRIVING A 1997 JEEP CHEROKEE, 4 CARS IN TOTAL WERE INVOLVED I WAS STOPPED FAR BACK IN A LINE OF CARS WAITING FOR A RED LIGHT TO TURN GREEN. THE LINE BEGAN TO MOVE UP SLOWLY, I LET MY FOOT UP FROM THE BRAKE AND WITHIN SECONDS THE JEEP ACCELERATED FORWARD, I IMMEDIATELY APPLIED PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES THE CAR SLOWED TEMPORARILY BUT CONTINUED TO SURGE FORWARD IN A JERKING HOPPING MOTION. MY VEHICLE IMPACTED THE CAR AHEAD OF ME. I LOOKED DOWN TO MAKE SURE I WAS APPLYING PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES; MY PASSENGER WAS ALREADY CHECKING AS WELL. SEEING THAT I WAS (MY FOOT NEVER TOUCHED THE GAS PEDAL DURING ANY OF THIS) AND THAT THE CAR WAS STILL PUSHING FORWARD I WAS FORCED TO TURN OFF THE IGNITION TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE OFFICER DID NOT CITE ME THOUGH OF COURSE MY VEHICLE WAS STILL RESPONSIBLE. THE OFFICER IN HER REPORT STATED THAT SHE BELIEVED THE IMPACT, TO THE CAR MY JEEP STRUCK, WAS AT 45 MP/H BECAUSE OF THE AMOUNT OF DAMAGE TO THE REAR END. THIS OF COURSE WAS NOT POSSIBLE SINCE I WAS AT A STOPPED POSITION STARTING TO COAST FORWARD; THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE WAS DUE TO THE JEEP HITTING THE CAR MULTIPLE TIMES AS IT CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE WHILE I WAS BRAKING. AFTER THE INCIDENT THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, NO OVERT CAUSE WAS FOUND. THROUGH PERSONAL RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND SIMILAR INCIDENTS LINKED TO THE CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM (EVEN WHEN NOT TURNED ON), BECAUSE OF THIS WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF HAVING IT DISCONNECTED. MY FAMILY IS EXTREMELY TENTATIVE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE TILL THIS PROBLEM IS RESOLVED. *TR

AT THIS POINT IF I PUT THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL THE THROTTLE STAYS AT HIGH RPM AS I CONTINUE TO COAST DOWNHILL AND DOESN'T REDUCE RPM UNTIL THE VEHICLE HAS SLOWED TO A STOP. IT'S INTERESTING HOW WHEN IN NEUTRAL THAT THE VEHICLE RECOGNIZES THE SPEED, OR LACK OF, THEN REDUCES RPM ONCE THE VEHICLE HAS SLOWED TO A STOP. WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE WHILE IN GEAR THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURS. WHILE IN GEAR, IF I BRAKE, THE THROTTLE (RPM) CONTINUES TO STICK UNTIL THE VEHICLE SLOWS TO A STOP AND THEN THE RPM LOWERS TO IDLE SPEED. (KINDA HARD ON THE BREAKS TOO!) WHAT A RIDICULES STATEMENT! A CATCH 22! HERE, I FINALLY GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO DEMONSTRATE THE THROTTLE STICKING AND IT IS USED AS THERE DEFENSE SAYING THAT I INDUCED MY VEHICLE TO HAVE A STUCK THROTTLE! I GUESS THAT'S THE PRICE "I" PAY WHEN I DEMONSTRATE A SERIOUS DEFECT AND THE MANUFACTURE WANTS TO IGNORE IT! IF I KEEP THE CAR IN GEAR WHILE BREAKING TO A STOP, IT ALSO EVENTUALLY DROPS RPM TO IDLE SPEED. I DEMONSTRATED THIS EXACT PROBLEM TO A CHRYSLER REP. (BOB HARDY). LATER I FOUND OUT HE FELT THIS WAS "NORMAL" AND AFTER I DEMONSTRATED THE PROBLEM AND WAS I TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING THAT COULD BE DONE AND THAT THEY SAID IT WAS "DRIVER INDUCED". I GUESS THAT'S THE PRICE YOU PAY WHEN YOU DEMONSTRATE A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM AND THE MANUFACTURE WANTS TO IGNOR IT! I HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS PROBLEM FOR OVER 2 1/2 YEARS WHILE STILL UNDER WARRANTY AND NOTHING RELATED TO THIS PROBLEM WAS CORRECTED. I MUST ADD THAT IT TOOK SOME TIME FOR ME TO REALIZE THAT THIS WAS HAPPENING BECAUSE YOU CAN BREAK WHILE THE THROTTLE IS STICKING AND THEN WHEN STOPPED IT DROPS RPM. SUDDENLY THE ENGINE REVED TO A VERY HIGH RPM AND THE CAR SHOT FORWARD AND CRASHED INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THE CAR WAS STILL IN REVERSE WHEN I TURNED OFF THE IGNITION. SEVERAL PERSONS WITNESSED THE INCIDENT. THEY HEARD THE HIGH REV OF THE ENGINE, AND ALSO NOTED THAT THE BACKUP LITES WERE ON WHEN I HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I HAVE OWNED 3 JEEP CHEROKEES AND HAVE DRIVEN THEM FOR THE PAST TEN YEARS SO I AM VERY EXPERIENCED IN DRIVING THIS VEHICLE. I AM POSITIVE THAT THIS CAR WAS IN REVERSE WHEN THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION OCCURRED. *AK
