HYUNDAI IS RECALLING 188,282 MY 2001-2004 SONATA AND MY 2001-2004 XG300 AND XG350 VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. ROAD SALT APPLIED IN THESE JURISDICTIONS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS MAY RESULT IN PROGRESSIVE, INTERNAL CORROSION OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME ON THE VEHICLES, AND MAY RESULT IN THINNING OR PERFORATION OF THE SUB-FRAME STEEL. THE CORROSION IS FREQUENTLY VISIBLE AND OFTEN DISCOVERED DURING INSPECTION OR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, AND OWNERS MAY ALSO HEAR NOISES OR NOTICE TIRE MISALIGNMENT AND STEERING PULL. IF THESE SIGNALS ARE UNDETECTED OR UNHEEDED, THE CORROSION MAY PROGRESS AND THE FORWARD MOUNTING OF THE LOWER CONTROL ARM MAY DETACH FROM THE SUB-FRAME.

Risk: IF THAT HAPPENS, THE VEHICLE MAY LOSE DRIVE POWER TO THE WHEELS, AND THE FRONT WHEEL MAY MAKE CONTACT WITH THE FENDER OR WHEEL WELL, THEREBY INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Fix: DEALERS WILL MEASURE THE THICKNESS OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME AND INSPECT THE FRONT SUB-FRAME FOR CORROSION DAMAGE AND, IF NECESSARY, THE FRONT SUB-FRAME WILL BE REPLACED WITH A NEW SUB-FRAME THAT INCORPORATES ADDITIONAL HOLES IN THE UPPER AND LOWER PANELS. IF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME DOES NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT, THE DEALER WILL ADD DRAINAGE HOLES TO THE SUB-FRAME AND WILL TREAT THE SUB-FRAME WITH RUST-PROOFING MATERIAL TO STOP THE CORROSION PROCESS. THIS PROCEDURE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT THE HYUNDAI CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-633-5151.

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SOME SONATA VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 2.5 LITER V-6 ENGINES AND ALL ELANTRA MODEL VEHICLES MAY HAVE EXPERIENCED INTERMITTENT LOW-SPEED ENGINE STALLING, WHICH COULD OCCUR IF THE MAF (MASS AIR FLOW) SENSOR ELECTRICAL SIGNAL IS INTERRUPTED AS A RESULT OF ENGINE VIBRATION TRANSMITTED TO THE MAF SENSOR CONNECTOR WIRING HARNESS.

Risk: THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Fix: DEALERS WILL RE-ROUTE THE MAF SENSOR CONNECTOR WIRING HARNESS.

NHTSA Campaign: 01V347000

Component: AIR BAGS

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT COULD ILLUMINATE DUE TO MOTION OF THE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESS AND SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR THAT MOUNT TO THE ADJUSTABLE SEAT CUSHION ASSEMBLY. THIS CONDITION ONLY RELATES TO THE DRIVER AND/OR PASSENGER SEAT-MOUNTED SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG(S).

Risk: THIS CONDITION COULD PREVENT SEAT MOUNTED SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT DURING AN ACCIDENT WHERE SUCH DEPLOYMENT SHOULD OCCUR. NON-DEPLOYMENT OF THE SRS SIDE IMPACT AIR BAGS COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY DURING AN ACCIDENT WHERE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT IS INTENDED.

Fix: DEALERS WILL MORE SECURELY FASTEN THE FRONT SEAT SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESS AND CONNECTORS TO THE VEHICLE'S FRONT SEAT CUSHION FRAMES. OWNER NOTIFICATION WILL OCCUR IN SIX MAILINGS ON MAY 27, JUNE 3, JUNE 10, JUNE 17, JUNE 24, AND JULY 1, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.

ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, AN INTERMITTENT CONDITION THAT LEADS TO THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATION COULD RESULT FROM MOTION OF THE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESS AND SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR WHICH MOUNT TO THE ADJUSTABLE SEAT CUSHION ASSEMBLY. THIS CONDITION ONLY RELATES TO THE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAGS AND COULD PREVENT AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT DURING A CRASH WHERE SUCH DEPLOYMENT SHOULD OCCUR.

Risk: NON-DEPLOYMENT OF THE SRS SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY DURING A SIDE IMPACT CRASH.

Fix: DEALERS WILL MORE SECURELY FASTEN THE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESSES AND CONNECTORS TO THE VEHICLE'S FRONT SEAT CUSHION FRAMES. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MAY 28, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.

While driving at about 10 mph, the front end of your vehicle collapsed toward the passenger-side wheel. You contacted Hyundai about a suspension recall, but the manufacturer said your vehicle's VIN wasn't included in that recall campaign. The problem occurred around 100,000 miles and was never diagnosed or repaired. This issue will likely require inspection and replacement of suspension components that failed.

While driving, your husband's 2000 Hyundai Sonata suddenly came to a screeching halt, and he nearly lost control of the vehicle. When he pulled over, the driver's front wheel had completely detached because the front axle had broken. The dealer determined this was caused by corrosion of the front subframe, which was part of a recall campaign (CC1, campaign number 11-01-038 from October 2011) that the owner says they never received notice about. Repair will involve replacing the corroded front subframe and reattaching or replacing the front axle assembly.

Your car's rear cross member (part of the suspension frame) has developed severe rust and is at risk of breaking apart. The dealer told you this isn't covered under recall and replacement costs $3,000, even though your front cross member was replaced under recall for the same rust issue. A rusted frame component can affect your car's structural integrity and suspension support.

Your vehicle's driver's side upper strut mount has broken through its mounting point, which was discovered during routine service at 25,000 miles. This is a structural suspension failure that affects how your vehicle handles and rides. The issue will likely require replacement of the strut mount assembly and possibly related suspension components.

Your mechanic discovered that the front subframe lower control arm has corroded on your 2000 Hyundai Sonata during a tire maintenance visit. Hyundai refused to help with repairs because your vehicle wasn't covered under a specific recall campaign. The part was never repaired, and your car had 220,000 miles when the corrosion was found.

Filed: Jun 2018

Your airbag warning light turns on as soon as you start the engine and stays on the entire time you're driving, only turning off when you shut off the engine. This indicates a problem with your airbag system that needs to be diagnosed—you may have a faulty airbag module, wiring issue, or sensor problem. You should have a mechanic or dealer scan the airbag system with diagnostic equipment to identify the specific fault before driving the car extensively.

NHTSA #: 11100758

CrashFiled: Jun 2012

Your car was struck head-on at 40 mph in a serious collision that totaled the front end, but your front and side airbags failed to deploy. You were only protected by your seat belt, and you feel the airbag failure could have been life-threatening. This issue would require a diagnostic inspection of the airbag system's sensors, wiring, and deployment mechanisms.

Filed: Mar 2017

While driving at 5 mph, your front passenger-side wheel completely detached from the vehicle. A mechanic diagnosed the problem as a failed control arm and a rusted subframe that could no longer support the wheel assembly. This is a serious structural failure that occurred at 140,000 miles.

NHTSA #: 10960047

Filed: Mar 2015

While slowing down to turn onto a side road, your lower left control arm completely pulled away from the frame because the frame rail had rusted completely through with a large hole. Inspection found the right side frame has similar rust damage and missing sections. This happened at low speed, but could have caused loss of control at highway speeds. The fix will require frame repair or replacement and reattachment of the control arm.

Your car's steering and stability feel unstable, especially when hitting bumps—you lose traction and the vehicle becomes hard to control. Your mechanic found that the rear subframe is rusty and cracked, even though it was replaced under recall around 2010. The structural damage to the frame is causing the handling problems and may need repair or replacement.

NHTSA #: 11185436
Fuel System, Gasoline2 issues
criticalFUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
Filed: Dec 2014

Your fuel tank is cracked and leaking gasoline, causing a strong gas smell inside the cabin. This is a serious safety hazard—gasoline vapors could ignite and cause an explosion, which is why the fire department and hazmat team responded to your vehicle. The dealership is replacing the subframe due to a separate recall for severe rust, but they're not addressing the cracked fuel tank issue, which may also be related to rust damage.

Your gas pump keeps shutting off every few cents during refueling, even when your tank is nearly empty, making it take 30-45 minutes to fill up completely. You sometimes have to switch to a different pump to get a full tank, and gas has spilled out the top of the tank when trying to add fuel. This makes long road trips impractical and raises safety concerns.

Filed: Mar 2022

Your right front wheel makes a clunking noise when turning, and your car slams in and out of gear at any speed. You've taken it to the dealer multiple times — they found your control arm needs repair and your airbag warning light stays on, but said parts aren't available for your model year. Your rear end also makes clunking sounds that suggest worn suspension components. The dealer told you to accept these issues even though you consider them safety concerns. Repairs would likely involve replacing the control arm, transmission transmission mounts, and suspension components like shocks or struts.

While driving to work, you noticed your car pulling to one side. When you inspected the frame, you found a 2-inch crack on one side and a 1/4-inch by 20-inch crack on the other side, and the frame felt rotten when you touched it. This type of frame damage requires professional structural inspection and likely needs frame repair or replacement.

Filed: Oct 2013

When you made a quick stop at a traffic light, your car pulled sharply to the right instead of stopping straight. You also noticed squealing noises when turning and the steering felt shaky afterward. A Hyundai dealer found that your front subframe (the structural frame that supports the front suspension) had corroded and failed, causing the right front tire to shift out of position. The dealer warned this is a serious safety issue that could lead to loss of steering control and advised against driving the car. The fix will involve replacing the damaged front subframe.

Filed: Oct 2012

Your Hyundai dealer has repeatedly refused to fix suspension and structural problems under warranty, even though your car was within the 100,000-mile, 10-year warranty period when you brought it in. During a state safety inspection, your car failed because the rear sub-frame has rusted through with a hole, making it unsafe to drive. Fixing this will likely require rear sub-frame replacement or welding repair.

Your transmission is stuck in third gear and won't shift properly, causing the check engine light to come on. When the car does shift, it bangs hard going in and out of gears before getting stuck again. Additionally, your airbag warning light stays on constantly. The transmission may need diagnostic testing to read error codes, and the airbag system will need inspection to determine why the warning light is illuminated.

Filed: Jul 2013

Your rear control arm broke off from the subframe due to rust, causing noticeable noise that led you to take your car to a mechanic. You're concerned that only the front control arms were recalled for rust issues, when the rear parts are made from the same material and are also rusting. The fix will likely involve replacing the rusted rear control arm and possibly inspecting or replacing other rust-affected suspension components.
