Open Safety Recalls (1)
NHTSA Campaign: 00V314001
Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: ACCENT GT MODEL VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH DOHC ENGINES MANUFACTURED FROM DECEMBER 19, 1996 THROUGH JUNE 30, 1997; 1998 ACCENT MODEL VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM MAY 6, 1997 THROUGH JUNE 25, 1998; 1997 SONATA VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM AUGUST 1, 1996 THROUGH JULY 9, 1997 AND 1998 SONATA VEHICLES PRODUCED FROM JULY 9, 1997 THROUGH APRIL 24, 1998. THE EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEMS MAY APPLY EXCESSIVE VACUUM TO THE FUEL TANKS DURING THE CANISTER PURGE CYCLE. MINOR FUEL TANK DISTORTION COULD RESULT. A SMALL CRACK COULD DEVELOP ON THE UPPER FUEL TANK SURFACE. THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT WOULD THEN ILLUMINATE AND, IN SOME CASES, THE VEHICLE DRIVER COULD NOTICE A GASOLINE ODOR.
Risk: FUEL LEAKAGE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE CAN RESULT IN A FIRE.
Fix: DEALERS WILL PRESSURE CHECK THE VEHICLE'S FUEL TANK TO DETERMINE IF IT HAS CRACKED. IF IT IS CRACKED, A NEW FUEL TANK WILL BE INSTALLED. A NEW FUEL FILLER CAP THAT DECREASES THE AMOUNT OF VACUUM INSIDE THE FUEL TANK WILL ALSO BE INSTALLED. NOTE: THE 1997-1998 SONATA FUEL TANKS HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED CRACKING. HOWEVER, AT THIS TIME, THE CAUSE FOR THE CRACKING HAS NOT BEEN IDENTIFIED. THIS PORTION OF THE CAMPAIGN WILL BEGIN AFTER HYUNDAI HAS DETERMINED THE CAUSE AND CORRECTIVE PROCEDURE.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 51)
Fuel System, Gasoline →4 issues
Your gas tank has developed cracks that kept reappearing even after you replaced it with a used tank from an older model — the new tank started leaking within 3 months in the same area. When you discovered a recall for this issue and brought it to the dealer, they refused to fix it under warranty, claiming they'd already added a check valve in 2006 to prevent this problem. Despite appeals to Hyundai's regional and national offices, the recall was denied, leaving you with a leaking and potentially dangerous fuel tank. The fix will likely require either a proper fuel tank replacement or a complete fuel system inspection to identify and repair the source of the cracks.

Your car is leaking gasoline from the fuel tank, which you may notice as wet spots under the vehicle and a strong gas smell. The tank has cracked on the driver's side, and previous repair attempts using epoxy patches, tank replacement, and welding have all failed to stop the leak. Fixing this will likely require a complete fuel tank replacement with a new OEM part and inspection of related fuel lines and connections.

You noticed a gas smell and discovered a leak coming from your fuel tank. The dealer identified a hole in the tank and found a recall (#00V314001) for fuel tank issues on your model, but refused to repair it because your vehicle wasn't included in that specific recall. You believe the tank should be replaced under the recall anyway. Fixing this will likely involve removing and replacing the fuel tank assembly.

Your fuel tank has developed a crack. A recall was issued for this make, model, and year due to this issue, but your specific vehicle wasn't included in the recall based on its VIN. A cracked fuel tank can leak gasoline and create a safety hazard. Repairing this will likely require fuel tank replacement or a professional fuel system repair.

Power Train →3 issues
While driving out of a parking lot, two pieces of equipment fell off your vehicle—one resembling a belt and the other a small drum. After this happened, your automatic transmission stopped working, and you had to coast into a parking spot. The fallen components likely need to be replaced and the transmission will need inspection to determine if it can be repaired.

Your transmission unexpectedly shifts into neutral while driving, especially during critical moments like freeway merges, forcing you to manually shift back into Drive to regain power. In some cases, you had to pull over, shut off the engine, and restart the car to get back into gear. This unpredictable behavior poses a serious safety risk and the dealer claimed this was normal for all vehicles of this model. A transmission rebuild or replacement may be necessary to resolve this issue.

Your transmission has failed at 39,000 miles. The transmission may need to be rebuilt or replaced to restore proper power delivery to your wheels.

Latches/locks/linkages →2 issues
Your passenger door won't open from the inside after you close it. The inside door handle doesn't seem to connect properly to the locking mechanism, which could trap a passenger inside the vehicle in an emergency. The fix will likely involve inspecting and repairing or replacing the internal door latch linkage and handle assembly.

Your driver's side door handle has stopped working and you can't open the door from inside, which is a safety concern since you may be trapped in your vehicle. The dealership previously attempted to fix this issue but it failed. There's a known recall for plastic door latches on 1998 Hyundai Sonatas that may apply to your car. The fix will likely involve replacing the plastic door latch assembly with a new one.

Electrical System,latches/locks/linkages →2 issues
Your car has multiple door latch failures affecting both front doors and rear doors — they're stuck and won't open, forcing you to climb over seats to exit. Your windows are also malfunctioning: the driver's window won't move, the passenger window won't close fully, and the rear driver window won't stay up. Additionally, your electrical system has serious issues with intermittent tail lights that flicker on and off, causing the battery to short repeatedly, and your car won't pass inspection because the system keeps resetting. Fixing these issues will likely require replacing door latches, window regulators, electrical wiring, and the battery.

Your front door locks are stuck and won't unlock from inside or outside, forcing you to crawl through the back seat to access the front. Both passenger and driver side doors have failed within weeks of each other. The electric door locks are so unreliable that your car sometimes locks itself multiple times per week, and when your battery dies, you can't even open the hood to jump-start it—the dealer says this is a safety hazard. Fixing this requires the dealer to cut through interior door panels to access the locks, costing around $600 per door, and the problem may recur because the manufacturer used cheap plastic lock components.

Engine And Engine Cooling →2 issues
Your check engine light isn't working, and your vehicle's diagnostic system isn't communicating properly with the onboard computer. Because of this, your evaporative emissions system isn't functioning correctly, which means your car can't pass emissions testing and isn't meeting clean air standards. This will likely require diagnosing and repairing the OBD system communication issue and checking the evaporative system components.

Your check engine light (EGR warning) stays on while driving at any speed. The dealer has already replaced the EGR valve and EGR switch twice, but the light hasn't turned off. The issue likely involves the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system or related sensors that need further diagnosis.

Your driver's side door handle has cracked and is no longer strong enough to open the door latch, forcing you to roll down the window to exit. The handle showed a hairline crack about 6 months ago, but has now developed 4 larger cracks. You've also had to replace all four window regulators. Fixing this will likely involve replacing the door handle assembly and potentially the latch mechanism.

Your passenger window got stuck halfway down during a rainstorm and won't roll up. The passenger door won't open from the inside, and your windshield wipers stopped working even after you replaced the fuse. You'll likely need a mechanic to diagnose and repair the window motor, door latch mechanism, and wiper motor or electrical connections.

Steering →1 issue
Your car's power steering rack and pinion is leaking fluid, which may be causing the clunking noise you hear when going over bumps in the front end. Additionally, two of your four engine mounts are cracked and the other two are sagging, which can contribute to noise and vibration. The fix will involve replacing the leaking rack and pinion unit and all four engine mounts.

Power Train,latches/locks/linkages →1 issue
Your passenger door won't open from inside or outside because the door latch spring has rusted through and broken. The owner discovered the driver's side door has the same spring beginning to rust, which could cause the same problem. Additionally, your transmission slips out of gear when slowing down for toll booths and then suddenly slams back into gear. The door latch spring and transmission shift solenoid may need replacement to fix these issues.

Electrical System →1 issue
When your car was connected to a diagnostic computer during inspection, all the emissions monitors showed "not ready" status. Your mechanic explained that you'll need to drive the car on the highway for 20 minutes, then slow down to 15 mph for 5 minutes, repeat this cycle, and wait 5 hours before the computer will provide accurate emissions readings. This is a normal diagnostic procedure, though it requires specific driving patterns to complete the computer's self-check cycle.
