HYUNDAI IS RECALLING 188,282 MY 2001-2004 SONATA AND MY 2001-2004 XG300 AND XG350 VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. ROAD SALT APPLIED IN THESE JURISDICTIONS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS MAY RESULT IN PROGRESSIVE, INTERNAL CORROSION OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME ON THE VEHICLES, AND MAY RESULT IN THINNING OR PERFORATION OF THE SUB-FRAME STEEL. THE CORROSION IS FREQUENTLY VISIBLE AND OFTEN DISCOVERED DURING INSPECTION OR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, AND OWNERS MAY ALSO HEAR NOISES OR NOTICE TIRE MISALIGNMENT AND STEERING PULL. IF THESE SIGNALS ARE UNDETECTED OR UNHEEDED, THE CORROSION MAY PROGRESS AND THE FORWARD MOUNTING OF THE LOWER CONTROL ARM MAY DETACH FROM THE SUB-FRAME.
Fix: DEALERS WILL MEASURE THE THICKNESS OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME AND INSPECT THE FRONT SUB-FRAME FOR CORROSION DAMAGE AND, IF NECESSARY, THE FRONT SUB-FRAME WILL BE REPLACED WITH A NEW SUB-FRAME THAT INCORPORATES ADDITIONAL HOLES IN THE UPPER AND LOWER PANELS. IF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME DOES NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT, THE DEALER WILL ADD DRAINAGE HOLES TO THE SUB-FRAME AND WILL TREAT THE SUB-FRAME WITH RUST-PROOFING MATERIAL TO STOP THE CORROSION PROCESS. THIS PROCEDURE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT THE HYUNDAI CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-633-5151.

NHTSA CAMPAIGN NO. 09V124000 HYUNDAI CAMPAIGN NO. 089. *NJ THE CONSUMER'S DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING WHEN THE FRONT FRAME BROKE CAUSING THE BODY OF THE VEHICLE TO FALL TO THE PAVEMENT, WHICH ALSO CAUSED THE FRONT WHEEL TO BECOME DISCONNECTED FROM THE TRANSAXLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A COLLISION CENTER. THE COLLISION CENTER CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP TO GET AN ESTIMATE FOR THE REPAIR OF THE VEHICLE AND IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE ESTIMATE WAS ROUGHLY EQUAL TO THE VALUE OF THE VEHICLE AND THEREFORE, REPAIRS WERE NOT RECOMMENDED. THE VEHICLE WAS SUBSEQUENTLY SCRAPPED. THE CONSUMER PURCHASED ANOTHER VEHICLE ON MARCH 14,2009. ON JANUARY 12, 2010, THE CONSUMER RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR THE VEHICLE THAT HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN DEEMED AS NOT COST EFFECTIVE TO REPAIR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT DUE TO THE SEVERITY OF THE POTENTIAL FAILURE IT SHOULD NOT HAVE TAKEN HYUNDAI SIX MONTHS TO SEND HER THE RECALL NOTICE. NO FAILURE HAS OCCURRED AT THIS TIME. I WAS USING THE AS NORMAL, THEN THE CAR BEGAN TO PULL TO THE RIGHT. I WAS PULLING OUT OF A GAS STATION INTO A VERY BUSY INTERSECTION DURING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC IN MY 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA. I THEN HEARD A SNAP, A GRINDING NOISE, AND I COULD NO LONGER ACCELERATE MY CAR. I WAS ALMOST HIT BY SEVERAL CARS PASSING BY AT HIGH SPEEDS THAT DID NOT SEE MY CAR BECAUSE THEY WERE COMING AROUND A CORNER. TWO MEN STOPPED BEHIND ME AND PUSHED MY CAR BACK INTO THE PARKING LOT OF THE GAS STATION. I CALLED A TOW TRUCK, AND THEY LOOKED AT MY CAR THE NEXT MORNING. THE MECHANIC SAID THAT IT WAS DUE TO MY FRONT SUBFRAME BEING COMPLETELY RUSTED AWAY. IT RESULTED IN ALMOST A COMPLETE SUSPENSION CONTROL ARM DETACHMENT FROM THE VEHICLE, AND WHEEL SEPARATION. THEY ARE CURRENTLY WAITING FOR THE NEW PART TO COME IN, IN ORDER TO FIX THE CAR, BUT THE BILL IS ESTIMATED TO BE $1,500. *TR
I HAVE A 2000 SONATA WITH 128,165 MILES WITH A SUB-FRAME RUST PROBLEM. THE RIGHT SIDE LOWER CONTROL A-ARM IS SEPARATING FROM THE SUB-FRAME WITH MORE THAN ONE RUST HOLE EVIDENT IN THE SUB-FRAME. IT WAS DISCOVERED BY OUR LOCAL ALIGNMENT SHOP. TOOK THE CAR TO THEM FOR AN ALIGNMENT BECAUSE THE CAR PULLS TO THE RIGHT AND TIRES SQUEAL WHILE NEGOTIATING RIGHT TURNS. UPON THEIR INSPECTION THEY POINTED OUT THE RUST AND A-ARM SEPARATION FROM THE SUB-FRAME AS WELL AS POINTED OUT HOW THE WHEEL ACTUALLY WAS SITTING MORE THAN AN INCH REARWARD. AFTER THEY POINTED THAT OUT IT WAS VERY OBVIOUS THE WHEEL WAS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO BEING CENTERED IN THE WHEEL WELL. NOTHING HAS BEEN REPAIRED AS I AM RESEARCHING OPTIONS AVAILABLE; SPECIFICALLY TO SEE IF HYUNDAI WILL CORRECT THIS SAFETY ISSUE. *TR

I HAVE A 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHEN THE CAR WAS FIRST PURCHASED IN FEBRUARY OF 2006 THE CAR HAD TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS WHERE THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE PAST 25 MPH. I HAD TO HAVE THE TRANSMISSION REPLACED. THEN LATER IN THAT YEAR WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT ABOUT 65 MPH I NOTICED THE CAR WOULD SWAY DRAMATICALLY WHEN YOU TURNED THE WILL RIGHT. TAKING THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER THEY CLAIMED TO BE JUST THAT THE CAR NEEDED AN ALIMENT. NOW IN 2008 I HAVE HAD TO HAVE THE RIGHT AXLE OF THE CAR REPLACED BECAUSE WHILE PULLING AWAY FROM A STOP LIGHT THE RIGHT WHEEL FELL FROM THE CAR AT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE. TAKING IT TO A TIRE SHOP TO HAVE THE CAR INSPECTED THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE WHOLE FRONT UNDERSIDE OF THE FRAME WAS DRASTICALLY RUSTED AND THAT DRIVING THE CAR IN THE STATE WOULD LEAD TO A WRECK OR WORSE. NOW I AM LOST AND DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO I HAVE DONE RESEARCH ON THE PROBLEM AND I HAVE FOUND OVER 20 REPORTS OF THIS CAR MODEL HAVING THIS PROBLEM AND IT IS VERY UPSETTING THAT NO RECALL HAS BEEN PLACED ON THESE DEATH TRAPS ON WHEELS. IT WAS BROKEN. AFTER HAVING THE CAR TOWED TO A AUTO SHOP. (CV PROS) ED TOLD ME THAT THE PROBLEM HAPPENED BECAUSE THE FRAME RUSTED OUT. HE SHOWED ME WHERE THE RUST BROKE THE FRONT SUSPENSION BAR IS WHAT I THINK HE CALLED IT. HE SAID THAT WAS THE REASON THAT THE WHEEL CAME LOOSE AND THAT A CAR OF ONLY 9 YEARS OLD SHOULD NOT RUST COMPLETELY THROUGH IN THAT AMOUNT OF TIME. AFTER CHECKING THE WEB SIGHT "LEMON LAWS" I FOUND WHERE THERE WERE MANY COMPLAINT OF 1999 THROUGH 2002 HYUNDAI SONATAS PROMPTED A FEDERAL PROBE BECAUSE OF THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR
THE VEHICLE STARTED RATTLING IN THE STEERING COLUMN AND RANDOMLY JERKING TO THE RIGHT SLIGHTLY. OVER A PERIOD OF 2 DAYS THE JERKING TO THE RIGHT FREQUENTLY (ABOUT EVERY 30 SECONDS OR LESS) MADE THE CAR ALMOST UNCONTROLLABLE. THE WHEEL HAS SHIFTED ABOUT 1 INCH BACK ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. THE CAR IS IN THE SHOP NOW AND THE ENGINE CRADLE HAS ALMOST COMPLETELY ROTTED OUT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. IF IT HAD GONE ON FOR ANY MORE TIME, PEOPLE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. THE FIX COSTS WELL OVER $800.00 AND I AM ABSOLUTELY OUTRAGED TO SEE THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED IN THE SAME YEAR AND MODEL OF MY VEHICLE TO MANY OTHER PEOPLE. *TR
AFTER FAILING A NEW YORK STATE INSPECTION, I WAS SHOCKED TO DISCOVER THAT MY 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA GLS HAD A RUSTED ENGINE CRADLE THE SIZE OF A FIST ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE. NO PREVIOUS INSPECTIONS HAD INDICATED THAT THERE WAS THIS IMPENDING HAZARD. CONSEQUENTLY, I CAN NO LONGER DRIVE MY VEHICLE, AND ACCORDING TO THE MECHANIC, IT WAS A MERE MATTER OF DAYS OR A SIMPLE ROUGH ROAD THAT WOULD HAVE CAUSED MY SUBFRAME TO DETACH WITHOUT ANY PRIOR WARNING. ON AUGUST 25TH, 2007, MY WIFE AND I WERE DRIVING HOME ON THE SOUTHERN STATE PARKWAY. THERE WAS QUITE SOME TRAFFIC (STOP-AND-GO KIND OF THING) SO WE WEREN'T AT A HIGH SPEED. WHEN THE PERSON IN FRONT OF ME HAD TO STOP SHORT, I STEPPED ON THE BRAKES, AND THE FRONT RIGHT WHEEL OF MY CAR SUNK, AND THERE WAS A LOUD NOISE LIKE METAL SCRATCHING AGAINST THE PAVEMENT . AFTER I FINALLY MANAGED TO STOP THE CAR WITHOUT GETTING HIT BY ANOTHER DRIVER, AND CHECKING TO SEE IF MY WIFE WAS OK, I GOT OUT OF THE CAR JUST TO FIND OUT THAT MY FRONT RIGHT WHEEL WAS IN AN ALMOST HORIZONTAL POSITION. AFTER TOWING THE CAR TO THE REPAIR SHOP, MY MECHANIC FOUND OUT THAT THE AXLE AND THE LOWER CONTROL ARM BROKE BECAUSE THE ENGINE CRADLE WAS SEVERELY RUSTED, AND THEREFORE THERE WAS NO SUPPORT FOR THE AXLE AND THE CONTROL ARM TO SUSTAIN THE WEIGHT AND PRESSURE OF THE SUDDEN STOP. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I BELIEVE THAT MY WIFE AND I ARE VERY LUCKY TO NOT HAVE BEEN INJURED, OR TO CAUSE SOMEBODY ELSE AN INJURY. THE REPAIRS WERE COSTLY, BUT I HAD TO DO IT. I NEED THE CAR TO WORK, AND WE LIVE IN A PLACE WERE THE CAR IS AN EVERYDAY NECESSITY. THE CRADLE FOR THIS VEHICLE WAS DAMAGED AND COMPLETELY RUSTED AWAY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED COMPLETELY AT A COST OF $2,897.22. WE ALSO INCURRED THE FOLLOWING EXPENSES DUE TO THE CRADLE FAILING WHILE WE WERE DRIVING THE CAR ON THE SOUTHERN STATE PARKWAY ON AUGUST 25TH, 2007: TOWING CHARGE OF $168.37, CAR RENTAL CHARGES OF $164.53. A WRITTEN ESTIMATE FROM A LOCAL BODY SHOP FOR $996.59 SHOULD BE ADDED TO COVER THE BODY DAMAGE SUSTAINED WHEN THE RIGHT SIDE AXLE AND RIGHT SIDE LOWER CONTROL ARM CRACKED, CAUSING THE FRONT RIGHT SIDE WHEEL TO BEND THE RIGHT SIDE BUMPER COVER. MY MECHANIC KEPT THE OLD CRADLE UP TO A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO, WHEN AFTER DEALING WITH THE LOCAL DMV OFFICE AND EXPLAINING THE SITUATION THEY INFORMED US THAT "A DMV JUDGE WOULDN'T EVEN LOOK AT THIS CASE". MY SURPRISE CAME WHEN I WENT ONLINE TO SEARCH FOR A CHEAPER PRICE: FIRST OF ALL I DID NOT FIND ONE BUT INSTEAD, I FOUND THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS FROM PEOPLE AROUND THE NATION, HAVING EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE SAME CAR, SAME MODEL, SAME YEAR. THIS DEFECTION HAS CAUSED PROBLEM TO MY FAMILY: RENTING CAR, TOWING, WE STILL GOING THROUGH DIFFICULTIES AND WE CAN NOT AFFORD THE REPAIR NEITHER DRIVE THE CAR. *TR

UPON TAKING IT TO OUR AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR SHOP, HE CALLED US THE NEXT DAY TO SAY THAT THE FRONT RIGHT FRAME CRADLE HAD RUSTED IN HALF. WE WENT TO TAKE A LOOK AND YES IT WAS RUSTED THROUGH THE CRADLE WITH A SPOT THE SIZE OF AN ORANGE THE FRAME HAD BROKEN IN HALF. WE HAVE FINALLY GOTTEN TO THE HYUNDAI DEALER. THEY HAVE SAID THAT THEY WILL FIX THE AXLE AND THE FRAME. BUT THE 2 FRONT TIRES ARE NOW NOT ANY GOOD 1 OF WHICH WAS NEW, THEY WILL NOT REPLACE EITHER OF THEM. THEY SAID THAT TIRE DEALER THAT PUT THE NEW ONE ON SHOULD OF NOTICED THE PROBLEM AND SO IT IS THEIR FAULT. ALSO WHEN THE TOW TRUCK WENT TO PULL THE CAR UP ON THE FLAT BED THE FRONT RIGHT TIRE GAVE WAY AND BENT UNDER THE CAR IN THE PROCESS DOING DAMAGE TO THE FRONT FENDER, THIS ALSO HYUNDAI SAID THAT IT WAS THE FAULT OF THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER AND THAT THEY WOULD NOT PAY TO FIXED IT. AS OF TODAY JULY 9, 2008 I AM NOT SURE WHAT IS GOING TO BE FIXED OR NOT. *TR
THIS COMPLAINT INVOLVES A 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA. MY SON WAS GETTING ON THE ON RAMP TO I-35 TURNING TO THE RIGHT. HE WAS GOING ABOUT 20 MPH AND THE CAR MADE A NOISE AND STARTED GRINDING. HE PULLED IT OFF TO THE SIDE AND CALLED ME. I CALLED MY OTHER SON WHO IS A MECHANIC TO GO AND TAKE A LOOK AT IT, HE SAID THAT IT LOOKED LIKE A BEARING HAD WORN OUT AND CAME APART AND IT NEEDED TOWED. WE HAD IT TOWED TO A TRUSTED SERVICE STATION THAT PUT IT ON THE LIFT AND SAID THE FRONT SUBFRAME/CROSSMEMBER HAD RUSTED THROUGH CAUSING THE CONTROL ARM AND CV AXLE TO COME APART. I CALLED HYUNDAI AND THEY SAID THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. WELL OUR CAR HAS BEEN SITTING AT THE SERVICE STATION FOR EIGHT MONTHS WAITING FOR A USED SUBFRAME THAT ISN'T RUSTED THROUGH. THEY THE SERVICE STATION HAS ORDERED 4 USED SUBFRAMES AND ALL HAVE BEEN RUSTED THROUGH. MY BROTHER RUNS A BODY SHOP IN N.C. AND HAS BEEN LOOKING FOR ONE FOR US AND CANT FIND ANY THAT AREN'T RUSTED. SUPPOSEDLY AS SOON AS THERE IS ONE THAT ISN'T RUSTED ITS SENT TO "THE SALT BELT" FOR A THOUSAND DOLLARS TO REPAIR A CAR THAT SHOULD NOT NEED IT. OUR FAMILY HAS 2 CARS ONE 13 YEARS OLDER THAN THIS SONATA AND ONE 16 YEARS OLDER THAN THIS SONATA. THEIR FRAMES AREN'T RUSTED THROUGH BOTH HAVE BEEN OUTSIDE IN THE SALT AND SNOW MORE THAN THIS SONATA. THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM THIS PART SHOULD BE THE LAST THING TO RUST THROUGH ON A CAR.
