DURING AN INSURANCE INSTITUTE FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY (IIHS) OFFSET FRONTAL BARRIER IMPACT TEST, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT FUEL TAN DAMAGE COULD OCCUR. ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, A VAPOR TUBE HOSE CLAMP THAT IS LOCATED NEAR THE FUEL TANK MAY NOT BE POSITIONED PROPERLY AND COULD CAUSE FUEL LEAKAGE.

Risk: FUEL LEAKAGE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE MAY RESULT IN A FIRE.

Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE POSITION OF THE VAPOR TUBE HOSE CLAMP EARS AND CORRECTLY POSITION THE CLAMP, IF NECESSARY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 5, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT HYUNDAI DE PUERTO RICO AT 1-800-981-0188.

CERTAIN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AN ADVANCED AIR BAG SYSTEM. THE OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM (OCS) INSTALLED IN THE RIGHT FRONT SEAT OF THE VEHICLE MAY MISCLASSIFY A CHILD RESTRAINT SEAT (CRS) AS AN ADULT. THIS MAY OCCUR IF THE CRS IS INSTALLED AFTER AN ADULT HAS BEEN SEATED IN THE RIGHT FRONT SEAT. IF THERE HAS NOT BEEN A 'KEY ON' ' KEY OFF' CYCLE WITH THE RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER SEAT EMPTY PRIOR TO INSTALLATION OF THE CRS.

Risk: THE POSSIBILITY OF MISCLASSIFICATION OF A CRS AS AN ADULT MAY ALLOW THE RIGHT FRONT AIRBAG OR SIDE IMPACT AIRBAG TO DEPLOY IN A CRASH AND COULD RESULT IN INJURY TO THE RIGHT FRONT OCCUPANT.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE VEHICLE'S OCS ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (ECU) TO REMOVE THE FEATURE THAT MAY CAUSE THE CRS TO BE RECOGNIZED AS AN ADULT. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 15, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI OF PUERTO RICO AT 1-800-981-0188.

ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, IF THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT IS UNOCCUPIED OR IS OCCUPIED BY SOMEONE LIGHTER THAN 56.4 POUNDS, THE PASSENGER AIR BAG IS DEACTIVATED AND WILL NOT DEPLOY IF A CRASH OCCURS. HOWEVER, THE OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SENSOR MAY INCORRECTLY INTERPRET THAT A SEATED ADULT IS AN INFANT SEAT AND DEACTIVATE THE PASSENGER AIR BAG IF SOMEONE HEAVIER THAN 56.4 POUNDS WHO IS SEATED WITH ONE LEG RESTING ON THE OUTBOARD OR INBOARD EDGE OF THE SEAT; WITH LEGS SPREAD; OR POSITIONED OFF-CENTER TOWARD THE CENTER CONSOLE AND WITH HIS OR HER ARM LEANING ON THE CONSOLE.

Risk: IN THE EVENT OF A VEHICLE CRASH, THE AIR BAG MAY NOT DEPLOY, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN SERIOUS INJURY TO THE RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER.

Fix: THE OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SENSOR WILL BE REPROGRAMMED.

Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS

DURING AN INSURANCE INSTITUTE FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY (IIHS) OFFSET FRONTAL BARRIER IMPACT TEST ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, FUEL SPILLAGE OCCURRED AS A RESULT OF FUEL TANK DAMAGE CAUSED BY CONTACT BETWEEN A VAPOR TUBE HOSE CLAMP EAR AND THE FUEL TANK. THE VAPOR TUBE HOSE CLAMP EAR WAS FOUND TO BE MISPOSITIONED AND FACING TOWARD THE FUEL TANK.

Risk: IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE COULD CAUSE THE MISPOSITIONED CLAMP TO PUNCTURE THE FUEL TANK CAUSING FUEL LEAKAGE. FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.

Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE POSITION OF THE VAPOR TUBE HOSE CLAMP AND CORRECTLY POSITION THE CLAMP, IF NECESSARY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON MAY 24, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.

CrashFiled: Jun 2019

Your airbags deployed during a single-vehicle accident where the car sideswiped a tree at low speed. Despite wearing a seatbelt and experiencing minimal front-end damage, the driver sustained severe injuries including fractured lumbar vertebrae and broken ribs. The owner believes the airbag deployment itself caused these injuries rather than the accident impact. Addressing this would require a professional airbag system inspection and potential replacement of the airbag modules.

NHTSA #: 11220188

Filed: Feb 2019

Your airbag warning light came on, and a diagnostic scan found a defect in the passenger seat occupancy sensor (error code B1448). This sensor is supposed to detect whether an adult or child is in the front passenger seat, but it may incorrectly identify a small adult as a child seat and disable the passenger airbag. If this happens, the passenger would have reduced protection in a crash. The same issue was recalled on 2006-2008 Hyundai Sonatas due to injury risk.

Your airbag warning light is on, which prevented you from passing a safety inspection. Because you live on an isolated island without a Hyundai dealership nearby, you're unable to get the airbag system diagnosed and repaired. You're currently driving with an expired safety inspection and are concerned about potential citations. Getting the airbag system checked and repaired by a qualified technician will require diagnostic scanning to identify the specific fault.

NHTSA #: 11045790

Your airbag warning light is on, which indicates a problem with your airbag system. You believe this should be covered under Hyundai's extended warranty, but the dealer is refusing to diagnose the issue without charging you a fee. The airbag system needs to be scanned with diagnostic equipment to identify the specific fault.

Your passenger airbag off indicator light didn't illuminate when your dad sat in the seat, and an airbag warning light appeared on the dashboard later that day. The dealer discovered the airbag sensor on the passenger seat was damaged—the wiring was severed by sharp metal rails and clips on the seat frame. Your airbags would not have deployed while this damage existed, which created a safety risk during city and highway driving.

NHTSA #: 10991317

Your car's airbag off indicator light came on while you were driving. The airbag system wasn't diagnosed or repaired, and Hyundai wasn't notified of the problem. This warning light suggests your airbags may not deploy properly in a crash. You'll need to have a technician scan the airbag system's diagnostic codes and inspect the airbag components and wiring.

Your airbag warning lights have been coming on and off since May 2004 — first the passenger airbag light, now the driver airbag light is on while the passenger light is off. You're concerned that neither airbag may be working properly. You should have your airbag system diagnosed by a technician, as these warning lights indicate a fault that needs to be identified and repaired.

CrashFiled: May 2015

Your airbag deployed about 5 seconds after you hit a telephone pole at 40 mph. You sustained injuries to your neck, back, and head from the crash. The delayed airbag deployment may have reduced its protective effectiveness during the initial impact. You may need to have the airbag system and sensor timing inspected by a technician to determine if the deployment delay was normal.

NHTSA #: 10716916

CrashFiled: May 2015

Your vehicle was hit on the driver's door and B pillar hard enough to shatter the window, pop open the door, and bend the pillar. The door and pillar struck the driver, but none of the airbags deployed during the impact. This suggests a potential failure in the airbag system's crash detection or deployment mechanism.

Your passenger airbag shows an 'off' indicator even when someone is sitting in the passenger seat. Additionally, your airbag warning light on the dashboard stays on constantly, and your horn has stopped working. These issues have been occurring for 2-3 weeks. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the airbag system's electrical connections and sensor, which may require replacement of the airbag control module or passenger seat occupancy sensor.

While filling up your gas tank, both straps that hold the tank in place broke and the tank is now hanging down. The straps appear to have rusted through completely. Both straps failing at the same time is a safety concern that should be inspected, as a loose gas tank could be dangerous while driving. A mechanic will need to replace the rusted tank straps and inspect the tank for any damage.

Your fuel pump shuts off repeatedly while refueling, forcing you to spend at least 20 minutes to fill the gas tank. Your check engine light is now on. The problem likely involves a faulty fuel filler neck, vent valve, or fuel pump shutoff mechanism that needs inspection and repair.

NHTSA #: 10714351
Vehicle Speed Control,engine1 issue
criticalVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
Filed: Jul 2018

Your throttle position sensor has failed multiple times, causing your engine to accelerate unexpectedly when you try to slow down or brake. Even when you press the brake pedal, the vehicle continues to accelerate on its own, and you've noticed the brake pedal feels unresponsive in certain spots. The dealership acknowledged the problem but didn't perform diagnostics. Fixing this will require replacing the throttle position sensor and possibly inspecting the brake system for any related issues.

Filed: Jun 2018

Your dealer removed your front passenger seat to perform a recall repair and returned the car to you without the seat installed. You're concerned that driving without the seat may disable the airbag system and reduce the car's structural integrity in a crash, and you requested a loaner vehicle instead. Additionally, your airbag warning light is on with a code related to passenger occupancy detection for front and side airbags.

Filed: Feb 2018

Your antilock braking system (ABS) is locking up your wheels excessively, causing your car to stop completely in the middle of traffic. You've noticed a burning tire smell when this happens, and you've had to have the car towed twice. This is a serious safety concern that's affecting your ability to drive on highways. The fix will likely involve diagnosing and repairing or replacing the ABS module, wheel speed sensors, or brake lines.

CrashFiled: Aug 2015

While driving at 60 mph, your brake pedal suddenly seized and became stuck, and your steering wheel also froze without warning. This caused your vehicle to crash into another car, hit a tree, and end up in a ditch. Multiple occupants were seriously injured, including liver lacerations, a fractured collar bone, and seat belt burns. The vehicle was destroyed and a police report was filed. This issue may involve failure in the brake system's hydraulic components or the steering linkage, and could require complete inspection and replacement of affected brake and steering parts.

Filed: Feb 2024

Your car's rear subframe cross member is rusting very rapidly, even though you don't drive it in snow or harsh weather. Within the past year, it's gone from barely visible rust to looking significantly corroded. You may want to check if this is covered under a recall, as similar Hyundai vehicles have had the same issue. Addressing this will likely involve inspecting the subframe, treating the rust, and possibly applying additional corrosion protection or replacing affected components.
