2017 Ford Fusion Transmission Problems

A defect in the head caused the vehicle to leak coolant into the cylinder and cause a rough running engine. It over heats and causes a possible fire issue

2017 Ford Fusion Titanium 2.0L Ecoboost purchased brand new. Coolant intrusion into Cylinder #1, causing a misfire,registered in Vehicle Health Alert system; check engine light on. Liberty Ford dealership was notified within the first week of the 1st misfire.

While driving my Ford Fusion on the highway at a constant speed of 65 MPH, a service light appeared on the dashboard, and the car suddenly lost power to the wheels even though the engine was still running. Fortunately, I was able to pull over to the side of the road safely since there wasn't much traffic at the time. However, had this been a busy road, it could have caused a major accident.

I took our 2017 Ford Fusion in a couple of weeks ago for a service code showing we had a misfire on #2. We had the repair completed which included new plugs and coils. This past week, the car showed an alert that said the car was overheating.

We were in reverse backing into a parking stall and tried to put the car into park. An error popped up something to the effect SHIFT SYS FAULT We were unable to put the car in park/drive/or any other gear. Parking brake was automatically applied.

2017 Ford Fusion 2.0L ecoboost engine is available for inspection. The engine block was designed incorrectly and coolant leaks into the cylinder. There is a risk of fire from the intrusion of coolant in the cylinder.

Driving down the road transmission started shifting erratic people behind me had to slam on their brakes almost causing an accident as I had to pull over because it would not shift into the next gear. The vehicle only has 84,000 miles on it and I don’t know how this is going to be safe to drive with my kids in the vehicle. I called to see if there is any recalls and they Said no.

The Shifter Cable Bushing disintegrated on my 2017 Ford Fusion, causing it to not shift into drive while parking my car. This did not result in damage or an accident, but the car was stuck in gear, and I could not move the car. I was told there is no recall for my car on this, but there is on others.

I first noticed when I was in reverse the car stalled then a wrench tool appeared on the dashboard. I put the car in park then proceeded to shift to drive and drove off. That occurred sporadically until 12/14/2018 when a shiftsysfault appeared on the dashboard.

On friday, june 29th 2018, I remote started my car and when I got inside the car I was presented with the wrench icon and it said to see the manual. I checked the manual and it said that it had something to do with a powertrain fault. Light went off about 3-5 later.

In 5/2025 I had the transmission light come on my dashboard, then it went away. 2 days later I could not shift my car into drive only reverse or neutral. When I popped the hood the Shifter cable was detached and the bushing was in pieces.

Bushing for shifter busted, pervious recalls on 2013-2016 models, numerous reports known for this happening on 2017-2019 models as well. Currently having vehicle bushing repair after car being in the shop for over a week after having front line brake hoses replaced as well.

Vehicle purchased used at Simmons & Rockwell on [XXX] Mileage 16,323. Mileage 38,559 First Engine Failure & replaced "NEW" July 2019, *** indications & doc of 2nd engine failure about 70k mileage) Mileage 121,163 Second Engine Failure & replaced "NEW" August 2022 and finally Mileage 189,323 with Third Engine Failure Sept 2025 This vehicle had regularly interval oil changes.

Shift dial get stuck in park, will not shift out of park even with the override, have had it looked at twice, both times there was "no problems," and the shop always it works when the tow truck drops it off. It happens on and off, never gives an error message or throws a code. Could be driving one minute, get home, shut the car off, a couple hours later get back in, and it doesn't shift anymore.

Check engine light came on with 3 codes p051b pertaining to the crankcase pressure sensor, upon further investigation I've noticed that the 1.5l ecoboost 2017 ford escape has a recall but not the 1.5l ecoboost 2017 ford fusion, the system failed to no fault of my own. Recall needed due to fault of ford manufacturing/equipment.

I have a 2017 ford fusion. My issue is the the shifter link cable. There is a little plastic bushing that holds the cable to the transmission that allows you to shift from park to neutral reverse and drive.

Update to complaint 11229418 posted 7/4/19 car stayed in shop for a week. Replaced input shaft, fluid pump, filter, valve body, solenoid body, torque converter, and any associated gaskets and hardware car is going back to the shop tomorrow due to it shifting harder than before. Safety park feature no longer works either.

Vehicle was parked and when turned on the check engine light came on. While driving around 45 MPH , the power train light came on. Took vehicle into dealership and was informed I needed a new torque converter.

Approximately a week ago I noticed my veh was cutting out and losing power on slow acceleration around 30-40 MPH as the gears were shifting. Took the veh to a ford dealership and they said the transmission fluid smells burnt and is dark. They said the clutch is breaking apart and they said I need an entire new transmission.

I had to take my vehicle to the nearest ford dealership yesterday because I was getting an error message on my dash stating "shift system fault - service soon." I was not able to put my car in reverse or neutral and when trying to do so, the park brake was automatically applied.

I attempted to brake but the engine started racing. The only way to stop it was to throw it into park, I turned the engine off and it restarted it. The engine raced again and the only way to stop it before it hit another car was to turn the car off since the brakes could not override the racing engine.

Hello, Christmas Day my daughter, grandson, and I went to the movies to see Sonic. Afterwards we were waiting at the red light and when the light turned green I pressed the gas. The car did not advance forward but rolled into the middle of the road.

I was pulling out of tractor supply and it felt like I hit a hole . There was a hard clunk . I tried to go but all that happened is car would rev.

Was out of town when I went to shift out of Park, and I received a SHIFT SYSTEM FAULT - SERVICE REQUIRED MESSAGE. My car was stuck in reverse and could only shift into neutral. The shift cable bushing had dry rotted and snapped.

The bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may degraded and detached. Similar issue that was on recall for the 2013-2016 Ford Fusion.

In regards to the automatic transmission and torque converter. On May 14th 2024, while driving in a school parking lot at a speed of less than 5 MPH, I attempted to reverse my vehicle. To my surprise, the car did not respond and failed to move.

Shift cable bushing failed. I attempted to back out of a parking spot when the dash lit up with a Shift System Failure. Put on the emergency brake, turned off the car, and popped the hood.

Received a notice on my dash stating the shift system has a fault and service is required. I am unable to put my car into reverse, drive, or any gear. It is currently stuck in park.

Vehicle lost ability to drive forward & reverse on the freeway. Upon inspection, the torque converter had gone bad & contaminated the transmission fluid causing the transmission to go out. Now my vehicle needs a new torque converter & transmission.

About 4 weeks ago my car lost the ability to move while driving. The wrench light popped up to see manual. Upon checking the manual it stated that the problem was with the power train.

Shift System Fault: transmission shifter cable bushing wore out, cap fell off, shifter cable got detached, so I cannot shift the car out of Park. I have a 2017 Ford Fusion and it was not included in the recall, even though this Shift System Fault problem is the same problem that the Ford Fusions included in the recall are having.

Shift cable bushing issue. Same as recall 22s43 for 2012-2016 Ford Fusions.

Similar to the 2016 Ford Fusion (June 10, 2022 / NHTSA CAMPAIGN #: 22V413000) The 2017 Ford Fusion also has issues with shifting gears. Vehicle has been locked in park and is unable to move.

Due to transmission issues from what in hearing. The cars front end locked up while I was driving. I could not push the car out of the steeet.

Over the last 11 months when I am driving I go to back into a parking spot and the gear shifter gets stuck in neutral and will not move. I have to turn the vehicle off and turn it back on to move it. This leaves me sitting in the middle of the parking lot at risk to get hit

The shifting was not working when making the selected gear and it was driving in an unintended direction when it was selected reversed. The car was driving forward when the operator selects was in reversed.

Failure of vacuum pump caused the brakes and engine to fail on the highway. No warning indications appeared until after the vehicle was brought to a stop. The vehicle was diagnosed at Riser Ford.

The bushing that attaches transmission shift cables disappeared. The car flashed "shift sys fault" and kept turning on the emergency brake and disabled the engine from starting. After googling the warning, I found an article about the recall from ford and what the problem was.

The problem is in the gear shifting. The problem is the same problem many others are having on 2017, but are not included in the recall. The recall is Fords number for this recall is 18S08.

Car wouldn’t shift to park!

Purchased vehicle used from a state agency, transmission lurches, won’t go into gears, stays in neutral then launches into gear. Can put transmission into drive but the car won’t move for several seconds, will go into drive without warning.

The transmission failed AGAIN... the Original transmission failed at 75,106 miles and Ford would not replace it even though it was in the batch flagged as having a Transmission issue (assembled in Mexico with my VIN in the range). I filed a report like this for that one as well.

Turned off 2017 Ford Fusion SE 1.5l and received a msg: shift says fault - service soon. Car kept telling me it was not in park even though it did turn off. Placed wheel blocks behind the wheels because it was "parked" at an angle.

Vehicle stuck in park, the shifter cable bushing failed. Bushing deteriorated and is completely missing

My 2017 Ford Fusion started have problems with shifting from different gears. After a week of small shifting issues, it would not shift into second gear. Launched into second gear from first very fast.

Unable to place vehicle in park or shift vehicle with reliability. Vehicle does not safely reflect the gear that it is in (I.e. Lever in Park, transmission is actually in Reverse).

Car has issues when accelerating car sputters and shifts while driving also when parked if put in reverse gives hard jerk into gear when I looked up shows transmission issues where common in this model of vehicle.

Transmission becoming unplugged causing vehicle to not shift properly or not at all. Vehicle was put into reverse made it about 5 feet and couldn't shift into any other gear after that.

While trying to reverse or go into drive, my shift cable came off due to a cap being missing on it. The error 'shift system fault' keeps popping up. And now it has effected my transmission to the point where my vehicle has issues with accelerating.

Vehicle keeps randomly showing a shift system fault when I go to drive and a piece that should connect to the transmission to allow the vehicle to shift into gear keeps disconnecting causing the car to stay in park and the emergency brake to stay on.

I was in a the middle of a drive thru and I put my car in park and engine light came on, my gear shifter was flashing in all the gears and on the dash it was saying shift system fault service required. I couldn't put it in any gear. It wouldn't start until some guy came over and said the same thing happened to his ford fusion.

I was backing out of my driveway from my car all of sudden stopped, and shifted back to park. Maintenance light was on and message said shift system fault. I turned of my car and back on same thing, tried the manual override it did the same thing.

My wife was at a shopping center. Backed out of the parking spot, stopped, then turned the shifter to drive. Shift fault popped up and the wrench symbol.

Transmission needed rebuilt. Torque converter and value body went out.

Vehicle doesn't move when put into gear... When taken for diagnostic, transmission code pops up...

I went to my car after work and attempted to start it but a shift system fault error occurred and the car began putting the emergency brake on when I tried to shift to park. It would say "shift to park" even when my knob showed that the gear was in park. It would also rotate the knob back to p every now and then when you attempt to shift into a different gear.

My car will not say in gear it will continue to go in park no matter what gear it's in. I was on the city street when that happen. It took me about 30 minutes for it to do anything.

While the vehicle was stationary with the brake pedal depressed, the transmission failed after trying to go into reverse the gears would not change, I attempted to place the vehicle in the drive position and the gear became stuck in the park position. The "shift system fault, see manual" message appeared.

Shift sys fault I was reversing when my car shifted back into park and would not go into drive or neutral. When tried it goes right back to park.

So, I have complained to ford on 3 separate occasions about my gear shift malfunctioning. When I put it into drive, the gear will go back into park and start flashing. Or it will start driving and go back into park after moving.

Vehicle is noisy in neutral and has trouble shifting gears.

Primary concern: car loses all propulsion and goes into accesory mode when accelerating. I, as well as several others with 2017 ford fusion sport models, have lost total power while leaving red lights, stop signs, and worst of all, merging onto the highway.

On may 13, 2017 or there about my 2017 ford fusion from a stopped during take off accelerated very fast almost causing me to run into the rear of another vehicle. On may 15, 2017 I took my car in for service and told technician about it. He could not find a problem.

Car was accelerating on the highway at about 50 MPH and out of no where car shifts very hard and all power is lost. Had to limp to the side of the highway and shut it off. This was very dangerous.
