2017 Ford Explorer Engine Problems

Your 2017 Ford Explorer's internal water pump failed, allowing coolant to leak into the engine oil and contaminate it, which caused the engine to seize. You may notice coolant leaking near the oil pan, loss of coolant, bubbling in the coolant reservoir, or loss of heat from the vents before failure occurs. This is a serious safety issue because the engine could suddenly seize while you're driving, causing loss of power and reduced steering control with little or no warning. The fix will require replacing the internal water pump and performing a complete engine oil and coolant flush to remove contamination.

October 2025 check engine light came on, took to mechanic showed misfire in cylinder two and three. Replaced all plugs and coil packs, engine light went off. Engine light came back, hard start on November 26,2025 showed misfire in cylinder 2 and 3.

I brought my vehicle from a used certified dealer at the time of test drive I asked why such a rough transition when going from gear to gear and I was told it was the ECOBoost engine packed with power. Fast forward after multiple repairs and recalls on this vehicle I’ve made it to my breaking point when my SUV shut down as I was turning onto a busy street coming from my son’s school.

‘17 Explorer with 32,000 miles on it, bought new from dealership and have kept up with all recommended maintenance to vehicle and have went above and beyond to keep it in pristine condition but started experiencing coolant dripping from internal water pump this May ‘21. Last year Jan ‘20 was repaired for faulty clock spring and again in March of ‘21. Same issue.

I rented the referenced vehicle from enterprise rental car for 1 week. Drove approximately 2000 miles. This 2017 vehicle had approximately 20,000 miles on the odometer when I rented it.

Strong exhaust smell in passenger compartment when accelerating and/or merging into freeway traffic. I had to open all windows as my eyes were watering.

Explorer with 2.3l ecoboost produces an exhaust smell during moderate to wot throttle runs. Generally seems to occur after lifting off the throttle and returning to cruising throttle position. Vehicle must be vented to prevent illness to passengers, has happened multiple times.
